@AmithKK Uhm... tried doing md5sum thisofile.iso ?

oh like where's the expected md5?

6fe06d9bef6e4c61336194456a50a27e is my sum
for ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso
looks live I have to redownload

@AmithKK yes, try a different mirror this time. which link did you follow? b4191c1d1d6fdf358c154f8bf86b97dd ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso should be it

yeah :P
ah, I used the torrent

4:10 PM
@AmithKK Your torrent client should have verified the download... the torrent must be evil.

Oh god nooooooooooooo
Disk utility can read it fine
What is "disks" called?

@AmithKK what?

Error deleting partition /dev/sdb6: Command-line `parted --script "/dev/sdb" "rm 6"' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Error: Can't have overlapping partitions.
 (udisks-error-quark, 0)

Disk Utility? = Palimpsest

yeah, that

4:20 PM
can you do a cat /proc/partitions?
if it's still in memory, you can recover the table from there.. I assume.

I don't think so
It's been like this since morning
I did try to install windows :/
3
I could nuke the extended partition

@AmithKK maybe it has something to do with windows wanting NTFS?

@iSeth maybe
Yet another Sunday sort of wasted
I could be helping with mechanig :/

:/

@AmithKK Ugh! that's a horrible partition table!

4:28 PM
@gertvdijk I know :P
Badly maintained
Multitudes of partitions generated from dual(?) boot
Well.. thats because I took the disk over from windows
This ubuntu iso runs fine
but it does not install
it says it's an I/O fault

should we dupe close this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/236993/using-visual-studio-for-ubuntu
It's not exactly the same question, but it's "how do i cross-platform C/C++ on linux"

@AbrahamVanHelpsing just looked at it.
I think so.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing or better yet: askubuntu.com/q/195144/44179
little more related to the topic

I already voted. There are already loads of closed/unresolved "How do I get VS to work in wine" questions.

yes there are.

well there was a "cross-platform" note in the question...and VS has no cross-platform deployment options, whereas some IDEs do. i thought the answers were more helpful on the first one

4:34 PM
idk, we will see what the mods do ;)

Oh you guys were talking about that Q here. I think his Q is about cross-platform development, not about VS as IDE.

@gertvdijk oh, your right.

Close Vote

he wants to make .debs from windows kinda thing.

Close for off-topic here, should be SO. "please come back when you have a Ubuntu-specific issue"

4:39 PM
yeah. qt does cross platform deployment. code::blocks has support for different compile targets and project types. eclipse cdt has compiler options for specifying mingw/gcc and library configuration. i thought pointing him to C++ IDEs with feature listings would be the most useful solution.

cross platform can be so confusing... Esp. if you are new to Linux.

yes.
@jrg - i looked at the build requirements for chromium. no wonder it's not in ppa as a daily build...

I miss Shipit :P

Qt needs a cloud build service like Phonegap has...that would be a moneymaker

Wait... you can "Install" youtube now?
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Why not make one?

4:46 PM
Was I rude here in the comments? "-1. This is a copy/paste from the README." "@gertvdijk please put down your childish behavior [...]" askubuntu.com/a/236969/88802

-1. This is a copy/paste from the README. — gertvdijk 54 mins ago
comments onebox here like that @gertvdijk

@AmithKK how?

@gertvdijk Just post the direct link to the comment here

ah. magic again. hate that.
thanks

technically it doesn't address the question at all. the question asks the difference between the zip and a git clone

4:49 PM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Q is 2-fold.
"it takes a long time to download" and "How do I install this zip file?"

is it a project with a long history? i'm thinking it's not the build time he's complaining about but the clone time

@AbrahamVanHelpsing yes. it's a fork of the whole Linux kernel....
at least appears to be like that

then yeah. that's why git clone took longer than a zip download. he has no historical data.

Q: CentOS connected to Internet but not updates

XinHuaI have installed CentOS 6.3, OpenSUSE 12.1 and Ubuntu 12.04 on vmware workstation 9, on all of these when I use ping to check network connectivity receive proper answer, but when try to update them using yum, yast and apt-get, they all return an error message meaning "can't reach repository". @gertvdijk well the answer is gone now. shrug

5:03 PM
yeah, saw it. @obsessivesso made a nice comment, which disappeared a few minutes later with the answer.

@gertvdijk who told you it was childish? the answerer?

@iSeth yes

ridiculous.

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L looks like proxy issue to me. added answer.

added upvote ;)

5:23 PM
i missed the ping

@AbrahamVanHelpsing that was poop there. don't bother. removed it.
no... another "I lost all my Windows data!" askubuntu.com/questions/233968/… (okay a bit older now0

okay...no problems
i wonder how many of those are trolls and how many are actually questions.

Has anyone used AD password policy with Ubuntu?

@grs password policy? you mean AD/LDAP authentication?
that link was not related to the q of grs, but very general.

@gertvdijk what question? He doesn't even have an AU account.

Richard Stallman of GNU being slapped in the face by Alberto Ruiz (GNOME/Canonical). hehe
@iSeth the one he asked here, just above my msg.
15 mins ago, by grs
Has anyone used AD password policy with Ubuntu?

6:31 PM
oh, now I see what you mean.
Anybody know what's up with this and this?

@iSeth yes
you do it again. using backticks where you should use code blocks.
I TOLD YOU ;)

@gertvdijk Look at the dates.

haha. sorry. but still.

But, my question is, why did Community reject them?
Anonymous users can't reject edits...
its not a big deal... just weird.

@iSeth 'Community has approved 2356 edit suggestions and rejected 304 edit suggestions'

grs
6:38 PM
@gertvdijk - yes, and precisely - if an AD has password policies setup would Ubuntu LDAP client honor them?

@iSeth - do I need to create AskUbuntu account only to ask one question here?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I saw that...
@grs Only if you want to ask a question on the site. Your fine asking in chat without one. I misunderstood what @gertvdijk was saying.

@grs I believe passwords aren't stored on the Ubuntu machine when using LDAP/AD. The policies don't live on the clients... afaik.
@grs This would make a good Q on ServerFault.com :)

@gertvdijk that

grs
@gertvdijk - I already asked there, but was hoping someone of you, the Ubuntu guys, may know more about it.
http://serverfault.com/questions/460143/linux-ubuntu-vs-centos-ldap-client-for-389-ds-password-policy

Thanks though!

Looks like a good question @grs ;)

6:46 PM
@grs ah okay. good. will take a look at your Q there later to see if I can help in some way
@grs oh and next time hopping in and asking things here, please reference your Q here directly if already posted. thanks. :)

grs
@gertvdijk - Great! Will do! Appreciate your help!

@grs "389-ds on Ubuntu 12.04" Is that even working for you? I had spent AGES on it... without succes.
maybe because I was doing that around the days of the 12.04 release with still bugs there.

grs
@gertvdijk - I can't find the question you are referring to. Link?
And yes - I am playing with 389-ds on 12.04, so far so good, except the proper password policies. On that same Ubuntu 12.04 389-ds CentOS client gets notifications and everything, but the Ubuntu LDAP client does not. The Ubuntu client works only if I enable shadowAccount objectClass

another discussion.... askubuntu.com/q/237039/10698
@Rinzwind read your last post again....
Something is missing after very very ...
@Mochan I just passed my 666 day on Ubuntu! ;) ... And I'm still alive!

7:06 PM
@grs there's no question to link in my statement other than your own

grs
@gertvdijk sorry, I misunderstood it. Thanks for helping me! Good day!

@AbrahamVanHelpsing uh, yeah.

update to apparmor answer is almost done FYI

i'll install 13.04 on a VM, and use my laptop as a thin client. that's probably a safe way of doing it.

Hmmh ... Seems like Community doesn't like suggesting formatting-only edits.
Which makes sense ... But it still acts 100% on its own there ... Which it never should.

jrg
community edits = anonymous edits.

that's what I thought.
@jrg we're talking community rejects != anonymous rejects
that just doesn't make sense
yet there is no other explanation I can think of

@jrg This isn't about community edits. It's about Community rejecting edits out of the blue.
How that qualifies as minor is beyond me, btw.

Q: Reasons Community rejects edits

azulflameI recently suggested an edit, and the Community user rejected it within a fraction of a second. What causes this behavior, and what can one do to prevent it from happening? Is this possibly related to me logging on from the computer next to the one I usually use?

A: Add a reject reason when the Community user rejects an edit

Aziz ShaikhI believe that the Community user did not reject this edit suggestion. What happens is that when a reviewer clicks Improve button instead of Accept or Reject then unchecks the Suggested edit was helpful checkbox before submitting the edit, the suggestion will show up as rejected by the Community ...

good grief.
if he does this, then clicks that, and unchecks this... O_O

As far as I can see, though ... That doesn't explain the one I linked. That was rejected before any next edit was submitted.

@FEichinger vasa1 suggested an edit the same day.

@iSeth Hover over the "2 days ago" Shows :07 on mine on the review, :19 on the suggested edit.

huh, it does seem like he did his after yours...

8:39 PM
And if you look at this: askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/66967 it says :11 on the "proposed 2 days ago" down there.
Timeline is
- :06 My suggested edit
- :07 My edit rejected
- :11 vasa1 suggested edit
- :19 vasa1 edit approved
That makes no sense.

he proposed his just minutes after you. Maybe because he opened the 'edit' page before you?
oh, I see. nv mind

My edit was rejected before he submitted his. Which means, Community rejected mine for an auto-reason. And I don't see any reason for it to do so.

@FEichinger maybe there was another edit in there that got rejected by a real person and so we don't see it.

@iSeth One more ping, come on! :P

@FEichinger ping.

8:46 PM
Anyway ... I'm gonna try doing something for my Maths sheet ... due tomorrow.

@FEichinger OK, see you later

Aaaand Writer crashed on me.
Geez.

writer?

LibreOffice.

9:01 PM
ah, OK. I'm not surprised.
@GeorgeEdison \o

@iSeth Neither am I. But it's annoying nonetheless when you're about to get blocked from the exams for not doing those sheets. :P

Trying out my new router.

jrg
beat it to a pulp!
seriously though, how good is it?

I'm about to find out.

How are its config pages is what I want to know.

9:04 PM
One thing I kind of don't like is that I have to reboot after every setting is changed.

jrg
it'd be very hard to beat the pfsense config pages.

Like right now - BRB.

Motorola's config is awful.

@jrg: Do you have QoS enabled on any of your equipment?

jrg
@GeorgeEdison nah.
i mean, we can, but we don't have anything setup.
no real point imo.

9:08 PM
Wheee ... Done.

@FEichinger wish I was :P

Wow... the admin interface has a lot of options.

@iSeth Oh, I only did one out of 7 assignments ... It's just "enough". I'm shifting through our book for the exams, but I missed two weeks, so ... can't really catch up on the sheets.

Let me try out the port forwarding...

Also ... My birthday begins in two hours, screw university!

@FEichinger have a good time :)

@GeorgeEdison and now you have my IP address.

Yup :P

@GeorgeEdison works for me

jrg
is that a python -m SimpleHTTPServer ?

Should have used the Tor network :P
@jrg Yes.
I just wanted something quick.
So it appears that everything is working alright - thanks everyone.

tor hidden services are nice, but there should so be a way to run your own lookup servers
decentralization for the win

9:13 PM
Oddly enough - I can't connect to my own public IP address.

ahhh... you ctrl-c'ed it. :(

No - I didn't.

oh, my network just had a lockup

Ah, okay.
I thought something weird was happening.

@jrg - on the chromium thing, do you think people would be okay with a static build? even the google people say the shared build is buggy/broken

jrg
our wifi thermostats at work have to connect to a open wifi network. you can't get it to talk to a secured (WPA or WEP)
@AbrahamVanHelpsing right now, i'm considering taking this and making a cronjob that will upload a new adobe-flash-player style package to the PPA every night.

as long as they do something at application layer it's fine. that's where OSI and DoD network models differ...guess who got it right?

jrg
(found it in the AUR, and adapted the i386 script to work on ubuntu. haven't done the amd64 yet)

@jrg that could work i guess. i was more thinking not properly debianinzing it really. just running all the gyp stuff localy, adding a make install rule for cp chrome /opt/bin/chromium-browser, pushing the HUGE tree, and making a static build on LP. the LP server/sandbox might croak on the huge swap req though...even just building release

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing my laptop croaks on the huge swap requirement. i'll set up a 20GB swap partition and it will just roll over and die.
i might be doing something wrong though.

9:23 PM
they note it's a common problem. have you tried building release instead?
like no debug symbols etc?

how about noName@starbucks-galaxy.fightcllub.mashup.starfleet.mil ?

i need to stop complaining about rpm and get used to the fact that gov/mil wants rpm for some unknown reason (okay known reason)

jrg
what reason?

9:33 PM
reasons: rhel support, customization of some oddball things that makes exploit stuff that works across other distros not work on rhel, first to disable ptrace on a stock install for fighting the linux implementation of createremotethread, approved authentication card driver stuff working there first, etc etc

jrg
ah.

i would think if someone from canonical was in direct contact with a "we want" guy from mil, that could change. as is, i don't see it happening
someone with the stock comments userscript needs to see this one askubuntu.com/questions/237082/…

@GeorgeEdison explain.
works fine for me.

Something in the desktop environment keeps crashing.

@GeorgeEdison Yep. Same for me.

jrg
report it.

works for me too, but to be fair i'm using openbox. unity was cluster-fscked for me since 12.04. app-port was irritating. i ditched it

9:58 PM
i use the default packages all the way around.

OpenBox, eh? Hmm...

@GeorgeEdison Keeps crashing for me as well, doesn't do any harm though.

Despite common thought that the answer to everything is 42, jokerdino has reached the ultimate truth of linux use: "Does it work? Then use it."

What's the metapackage for installing KDE?

jrg
kubuntu-desktop

Oh right.

@jrg That's why I largely ignore the errors. But it does get annoying over time.
And, yeh, kubuntu-desktop.

We'll see how that works.
