10:00 PM
i wanted minimalist anyway. most of the apps i use are gtk based

Same for me except I write only Qt apps :P

First thing I uninstalled is the crash reporter
2

@mateo_salta That is a nice workaround. :P

That thing can be annoying if you aren't updating packages every day.

jrg
@mateo_salta now that's uh, original. :P

10:03 PM
whatever was crashing just dies and stays dead

Why is libreoffice-writer getting installed when I install kubuntu-desktop???
Here's a quick and interesting question for you all to think about:
Which do you think is the more complex application from the point of view of a developer?

jrg
@GeorgeEdison because it's a dependency.

Chromium or LibreOffice?

jrg
chromium.

@jrg Why?

jrg
10:05 PM
ask the developers.

jrg
well, ok, it "recommends" it.
and for meta packages like that, that means "suck it down too!"

Oh then I forgot the --no-install-recommends flag again.

Speaking about DEs. I've found RazorQt to be a very nice lightweight Qt-based DE, much like LXDE.

i'll say it again, if qt had a "package for all targets" option, i'ld be on board

10:08 PM
@GeorgeEdison I had trouble when I tried that.

Why do all DEs look so bloody awful out of the box? ... I have yet to see anything that visually pleases me and is practical ...

It can bite you if you're not careful.
@FEichinger Is KDE really that bad?

damn. somebody downvoted both answers here.

Q: how to open a new tab in the ubuntu server command line?

Nafaa BouteferWhat are the keyboard shortcuts to manipulate tabs (open new tab, navigate between tabs ...) in the command line of ubuntu server 12.04?

at the same time.

@gertvdijk I don't see any

@iSeth it's gone. hmm.
I saw them popping off 1s after each other.

10:10 PM
@GeorgeEdison KDE is cluttered and looks like a Windows/Apple hatechild, UI wise.

shrug
@FEichinger have you tried customizing it? It AWESOME for that.
I would be using it if it liked this graphics card.

@iSeth agree. KDE is awesome.

I don't want to tamper with my DE too much when all I do is really just "launch some kind of IDE, write some stuff, run it".

lol

@FEichinger they toned it down a bit from the previous one,

10:11 PM
@FEichinger You don't have at least five terminal windows open? You're doing it wrong™.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison just 1 terminal window with multiplexer here.
byobu ftw!

Damn rep cap!

@jrg Well I only have one window open usually but many tabs.

I don't use ubuntu for much outside of university/work ... While that does mean it runs like two thirds of the day, I don't use it to the extent where I'd say "Kay, let's delve into turning this into something awesome!"
I know I could make it awesome, and it would be awesome ... But it doesn't feel worth the effort all that much.

ubuntu should be something awesome. the problem is that the people capable of doing that are financially obligate more than they are morally obligated
2

10:14 PM
Very true.

jrg
and those who are more morally obligated than financially obligated are not capable.
i mean, i haven't even sent in my skunkworks application. it's been what, 3 months already?

Time is such a valuable commodity. Why? Because it's so rare.

more often than not yes. some are capable but don't understand how some users don't get "well it sort of works if you do xyz first"

yeah, I think I solved this one... Hopefully the user stays around after all he went through on this question

A: How do I subscribe to RSS feeds in Firefox with Google Reader?

mateo_saltaSome audio and video feeds are not the normal "RSS" feeds, so you need to add quite a bit of configuration to Firefox to get it working. Enter about:config into the address bar of Firefox, That will bring up this screen: Click on I'll be careful, I promise! Next you need to enter in a lot of ...

The '>' doesn't work for multiple lines here in chat.

10:18 PM
what's the financial payoff for google codejam? <--

Yeh, I figured as much.

Well... said...

That's what happens when I have too many tabs open. D:

One of these days I need to sit down and figure out what useless packages are installed on this system eating up space.

all of them that don't directly depend on ncurses oO wink wink

10:20 PM
If this were Windows, there would be a slew of tools like "Ubuntu Cleaner 2013", "Dconf Clean 4.2", and "PackageWhiz 12" for cleaning up unneeded packages.

jrg
i'm very glad this isn't Windows.

Codejam finals in London is gonna be interesting, though. btw²

jrg
does anyone get that reference?

No... should we?

jrg
or should i rename the book before i go and get serious.
88 MPH?
Back to the Future...?

10:23 PM
That's... how many km / hr.?
(We don't use your silly old-English measurements up here.)

Who cares about mph ... Imperials.

jrg
141.

Okay why do I need a 30MB package containing "KDE wallpapers"?
What a waste of space.

.62

@jrg you'ld have to say something about gigawatts for some to get a back to the future reference

jrg
10:24 PM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing ok, i'm accepting other title recommendations/ideas.

although he said it like jiggawatts

@jrg "Ruby on Rails - from the Steam Age to Monorails"

RoR - building your 50,000 watts of funkin -- Swordfish

Get the reference? Yeah, I know - pathetic :P

jrg
@GeorgeEdison no.

10:26 PM
Rails... trains... steam age...?
Yeah, okay - forget it.

jrg
yeah, lame.

I don't like Ruby enough to think of a fuzzy title.

@GeorgeEdison try apt-get install kubuntu-desktop --no-install-recommends

"Ruby on Rails - a Real Gem"

jrg
that's even lamer. :P

10:27 PM
"Ruby on Rails"
^--- Go for the simple.

jrg
you make the one i end up using, i'll print off a copy and sign, bind and mail it to you. in Europe or north america.

Even if I live in a remote jungle in Indonesia?

Somebody commenting "does not work" and then accepts my answer... sigh.

(Hey - you never know where penguins are going to show up these days.)

@GeorgeEdison I'd legitimately move to a remote jungle in Indonesia just to see him do that.

10:29 PM
I guess it would be a quick way to find out what satellite Internet is like.
I think you need a modem for uplink though.
"Where can I find a 12 mile phone cable?"

1.21 ( plus the pronouncation can be either way on giga en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_prefix )

RoR - RAWR ??

jrg
A roar is a deep, bellowing outburst of sound forced through an open mouth. It is produced by animals of certain species. A roar is usually made using hyoid, a small bone which is not completely rigid in adults. Animals roar for various reasons, including territorial proclamation, communication with other members, and anger. Additionally, the roar of an animal such as a lion is used in the process of finding and competing for a mate. The roar pattern is composed of three overall segments - a beginning segment sounding like moaning, a middle segment with low frequency loud tones and a final...
ehhhh.... nah
besides, there is already a project named RAWR. github.com/rawr/rawr

> In 1998, a poll by the phonetician John C. Wells found that 84% of Britons preferred the pronunciation of gigabyte starting with /ɡɪ/ (as in gig), 9% with /dʒɪ/ (as in jig), 6% with /ɡaɪ/ (guy), and 1% with /dʒaɪ/ (as in giant).

"Ruby off the Rails - Debugging for Dummies"

packaging jruby apps.

"Ruby on Rails - Rails on Ruby"

from lion competing for mate seems a lot like trying to sell ruby

jrg
@GeorgeEdison thought of "for dummies", but that's trademarked. :(

you could try -- for eeediots -- and get a ren and stimpy reference for free

@jrg "for Rubies"!

jrg
10:34 PM
lol, you guys aren't much help. :P

But, but ... I'm totally trying!

Hey, that part can easily be replaced.

Serious and stuff, you know.

rails on rubies?

"Ruby on Rails for the Utterly Stupid"
Somehow "for Dummies" sounds better.

10:35 PM
"Ruby on Rails for ME"

jrg
> Ruby On Rails: The trip to 88 MPH | that's what i've currently got reserved on my ebook publishing site.

"Ruby on Rails - I like trains."

BRB - trying KDE.

> Dr. Railove. Or, how I learned to stop worrying and love the rails.

10:36 PM
O_o

jrg
for those that don't get that reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Strangelove

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruby An early recorded transport and trading of rubies arises in the literature on the North Silk Road of China, wherein about 200 BC rubies were carried along this ancient trackway moving westward from China

"Ruby on Rails - Made in China"
"RoR - No, the other one"

"Ruby on Rails - Where are the wheels?"

10:40 PM
Really, you guys are hard on Ruby.

jrg
"The Little Big Book of Rails"
idk, i think it's more because i'm the one writing the book.

Nah, I just don't like Ruby.

jrg
they'd be just as hard if i said i was writing a python book.
"Learn Python: Or, how to avoid strangling yourself"

Yeh, but that's because I don't like Python either. :P

@jrg I don't think so. shrug
anyway, when I'm done, I DON'T EVER WANT TO HEAR ABOUT APPARMOR AGIAN! UNDERSTAND?
6
whew.

jrg
10:42 PM
@iSeth well, i appreciate the time you're spending on this.

Also: From now on, I'll pronounce "Giga" ['dʒaɪɡa].

@jrg no worrys. I'm mostly kidding.

I love KDE.

hey, who starred that?
@GeorgeEdison I knew you would.

@iSeth I did. :)

10:43 PM
hm, I wonder

@iSeth Now? Everyone.

@GeorgeEdison good!

jrg
@GeorgeEdison i don't know you anymore.

@jrg >_>

10:44 PM
I had a one night stand with KDE then went back to Xubuntu

@iSeth - apparmor rulez as long as you tell me how to configure it. btw, i am confuse and new at this. how i can add apparmor rule for insert proprietary closed source app here? i have a doubt, but i want it work. plz help.

anyway, I gotta go back to writing. I'm gonna need some proof readers though. I don't want to post it and have to rewrite it.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O_O /dies

brb logging into kde

(If you have something you want me to see, ping me, cause I'm not looking)

@iSeth ping

10:47 PM
good grief.

:D
You should've known that'd happen.

aw, I forgot that I didn't install it on this system, and all I have is a 6Gb Quantum Bigfoot

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I get 'Referral Denied'

grosse point blank

10:51 PM
I had to uninstall Gimp to put Qt sdk on...

totally not worth it

yeah, now I have nothing that can crop images...

Totally worth it.

also, my 50000 watts of funkin comment meant this youtube.com/watch?v=S-WaSXrqqZ4

11:03 PM
heh, I found an error in Ubuntu Unleashed
or maybe it just changed.
Okay, I need proofreaders!
anyone left?
nobody?
Wow....

@iSeth proofreaders for what exactly?

A: What is apparmor?

iSethApparmor is a Mandatory Access Control (MAC) system, replacing the traditional Discretionary Access Control (DAC). it has been included in the Linux kernel since version 2.6.36. It uses LSM kernel enhancements to restrict programs to certain ressources. AppArmor does this with profiles loaded i...

@gertvdijk my update to that ^^
its really long, so I want someone to read it over before I post it.

proofreading is for those that have time. i have none of that commodity. i have only deadlines

@iSeth but it is posted already, right?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing that's fine. I can do it myself. Its just nice to have outside criticism.
@gertvdijk I am updating it.
So the update is not posted.

11:13 PM
well I do have some comments on it....

@iSeth that was more me-snark than anything

etherpad?

@gertvdijk you can ask them here if you want

noos... Google Drive...
how do you convert it back to Markdown?

hmm, good question. I will get you a markdown .txt file.

11:16 PM
piratenpad.de/p/iseth-apparmor-answer (set font type to monospaced)

is that what you want?

yey. how did you convert to markdown?

it should already be in markdown
what I am really doing is sorta rewriting the wiki for Ask Ubuntu. People found it confusing.

What's up with kernAl everywhere?

I don't see that... what do you mean by everywhere?
oh, its kernAl not Kernel is it? gotcha
I see a lot of people looking at it... but I'm not getting any feedback.. is it all OK?

11:24 PM
you have it as kernal, "To load a profile into the kernal you.. " needs to be kernel

@mateo_salta ok, thanks.

I think silence might mean that some are reading through it maybe.

that better?

@iSeth "You will get a list of all profiles * loaded, all profiles" what's up with this * in the middle of the sentence?

didn't I take that out?
can't find it
nv mind I got it.

so affect is right then
> it is usually a verb meaning “have an influence on”

"Note especially that the proper expression is not “take affect” but “take effect”—become effective."

changed

okay. lots of minor issues i've dealt with in the post. :)
Getting bored now. I just realized again, I don't like Apparmor.

I can see your green cursor changing spelling mistakes

11:32 PM
oh, you where using the other one @gertvdijk ;)

other one? you posted the Markdown in the piratenpad, right?

@mateo_salta like I said, I was using gedit. Didn't take the time to spell it all correctly.
@gertvdijk yes I did.

yeah, I'm viewing on the google one

too bad you can't see many of my remove actions.... not highlighted

no 'find and replace' in piratenpad

11:34 PM
you'll have to replay the whole thing in the timeslider I'm afraid... piratenpad.de/p/iseth-apparmor-answer/timeslider

okay, I'm never using gedit again for this. makes it hard to see mistakes :/

ah nice @gertvdijk
and It can't spell check contractions...

I LOVE the timeslider. You'll be screwed if you type your password there though...

@gertvdijk respectively is just fine with the 'e'.

@iSeth yes, I added the e

11:37 PM
ah, OK.

maybe I missed it somewhere else
Found a realtime Markdown editor to collaborate! dillinger.io

@gertvdijk cool!

hmm.
doesn't do real time collaboration... :( unlike somebody did say it would have.

doesn't have 'find and replace' either

11:46 PM
not bad

yeah its nice.
I think we got it all covered though.

The basic format looks good @iSeth

okay, good.
