@iSeth ok, np. should have posted that line in two messages.

I still have a little more to add in a couple of days... its just a little bit though. whew

@gertvdijk @ mod power activate @GeorgeEdison

12:29 AM
@iSeth Hrrrm? I was out walking.

@Flabricorn did you start this? @gertvdijk wanted you to undo it because that was the wrong tool

No I did not star it.

@Flabricorn OK, just wondering :)

@iSeth Apologies for my tone of voice dear boy. I am researching a computer.

12:55 AM
@Flabricorn Don't worry about it, I am very hard to offend :)

jrg
@Flabricorn sup?

@Alvar What do you think of my update? does it look like the wiki too much?
I have more to add, for another day.

@iSeth it's fine, it was good to seperate the questions more.
so they wouldn't have too similar answers

1:16 AM
You mean? Does your other question have a similar answer? I haven't checked it lately.

@iSeth sorry I read that too fast and thought it was @jrg talking about his edit.. sorry is a bit tired...

@Alvar That's OK :)

jrg
the ubuntu docs suck with setting up SMB.
granted, smb sucks in and of itself, but this doesn't change any facts.

@jrg @gertvdijk wanted this star gone, because the tool doesn't actually do what he thought it did. We couldn't figure out the owner of the star.

jrg
cleared
and that's really cool.

1:23 AM
thanks. It is cool.

A: Unable to see DVD drive on Ubuntu 12.10

ThadeusA lot of people have had this problem, as I first did with the dvd and cd mounting. You have to make a directory for the folder within media. Be sure to run as root. sudo -s cd mkdir /media/[folder_name] If you have any error regarding read/write issues you will have to chmod Warning,...

@iSeth I just realized you've updated the answer, it looks awesome now! :D

might want to do something about that Q. He wants the OP to run as root. Maybe more of a warning?
@Alvar Great!

it looks really good having 4000 Reputation exact on the site :D

SergeyMythTV is able to shut down computer when it's no longer in use and wake it up a few minutes before the next recording starts. Q: spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam

user108159spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam

It's a question filled with love, thrill, adventure and action

@LuisAlvarado Again? whew

@iSeth I found an answer here

@LuisAlvarado lol

is there any word detection system
that for example detects if somebody types spam many times

@LuisAlvarado I'm sure there is... I don't know what/where though.

2:12 AM
this is the 3rd time I see this... this ... "behavior"?

yeah, I know.

Holycow

yeah, that happened every time and the same guy edited it out.

well there goes my idea about spam
lol

2:43 AM
@LuisAlvarado SPAM SPAM SPAM? SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM.

2:55 AM
@Flabricorn flagged as spam :P (jk)

3:13 AM
Well this kid just took the energy I had to start dancing out

heh, interesting.

jrg
FYI guys - for spammers, don't edit it to say "spam spam spam". Just flag and use your delete votes. Otherwise, the spam detection system can't learn.

askubuntu.com/questions/234611/…, can any one from hear help me with this issue

if the binary driver doesn't fix it, file a bug against the pm-utils package

@AbrahamVanHelpsing is it for me

yes
if you pin down what you want to do (a command to fix it) you can try this ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1484156

ok, I tried installing the driver, but it messes the screen render and also makes my laptop more slow

seems like i would work on selecting hardware that is known working. binary drivers should never "make it more slow".
screen corruption for that card is a known bug: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/…

5:56 AM
I got :- VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV710 [Mobility Radeon HD 4500/5100 Series]
and I tried and I'd tried: askubuntu.com/questions/124292/… to install to install the drivers

you have a known buggy card. enough said.

Yeah I have watched it in compatible list of drivers, but then what could be the problem
the fan never sleeps while working, and it is not starting on waking up after suspend

you're not getting it. it's known doesn't work hardware. i don't try to run windows 8 on an old solaris box. the same is true in reverse.
development should focus on new hardware, not band-aids for old hardware.

6:12 AM
ok, got it, but there should be any work around,..
I am bothering you but, I am new born kid in this world, I don't know much about Linux and Ubuntu but I wanted to learn

work around is if it works before sleep set it not to sleep

ok thanks I'll search on that.
Thank you

6:26 AM
please don't create new users and repost questions: askubuntu.com/questions/237201/…

10:03 AM
@jokerdino nice write-up. Well done - interesting future projects!

:)

you use github or launchpad for your project(s)?

I have had no idea about them actually :P
@foss both

interesting - have you had any thoughts how you are going to deal with language translations?

Right now, we are trying to use LP and then use git-bzr or something

10:06 AM
sounds like a question for the main site - how do you get the translation files from github to launchpad - automatic import ?

no idea. @mahesh set those up.

ok thanks - if it hasnt already been asked - I'm going to pose the question here - @mahesh might like to give a great answer ?! :)

I'll get him to answer :P

lets write something... bbl

10:37 AM
I think I have a good Q here.
0
Q: How do I get a list of non-LTS packages installed efficiently?

gertvdijkI'd like to see to what extent my system is LTS-supported by means of what packages are supported for 5 years and which are not. I could disregard some non-5yr-supported packages, as some are rarely used or very unlikely to get into (security) issues. I think this is useful as one can draw a con...

@jokerdino ... if you or @mahesh is interested - this is the Q posed. Cheers. askubuntu.com/questions/237257/…

Q: Who gets the bounty?

MukundI have answered this featured question which has a bounty of +50. I had first answered it through a comment. My comment helped in solving the question. I was asked to re write it as an answer so that i can get the bounty. I did that but my answer has only one up-vote while there is another answer...

Oli
@jokerdino Yeah but when moderators do it, it's called art.

jrg
@Jokerdino if that meta post hadn't been posted, then yes, it would be vandalism. But sometimes, bending the rules for the sake of getting someone their bounty is worth the trouble. :P

@Oli haha
@jrg, @oli, actually, I have no problem with the borderline vandalism.
he'll get the bounty and that is nice

jrg
12:01 PM
Oh crud. He won't get the whole thing though. He'll only get half. Right?

I suppose so

jrg
Lets see, I have another 50 rep burning a whole in my pocket, and I am glad he fixes my problem too...

Cya for a short while

12:23 PM
me is back

12:45 PM
@fossfreedom: You have an answer.

@Mahesh +1 - let me follow your instructions step-by-step... :)

use staging if you'd like to test things out.
just replace launchpad.net with staging.launchpad.net everywhere.
@fossfreedom ^

yep - trying that now !

also, refresh to see a small update.

re: pushing it back to Github, I think the only way is to export the po files.

1:02 PM
@Mahesh - who should be my translation group... "launchpad group" ?

Launchpad translators unless you have special requirements.

For your project what is your policy - open or structured?

May I ask why you need to reboot a server on a daily basis? This is an indication to me you're doing things wrong. Probably. — gertvdijk 10 secs ago

@fossfreedom restricted.
It was open, but later I changed it.

is this because still early days - or you are limiting for some reason?

1:06 PM
it is not exactly limiting.
Launchpad Translators supports a lot lot lot of languages.
and this forces that everything be reviewed
actually, it shouldn't make a big difference between structured and restricted as long as the team is launchpad translators.
that group is a supergroup for all translators on launchpad.

ok - thanks. I'm a little lost... I've got a green tick against "Configure Translations" - but now I need to add my template - dunno where to go.

push to github and wait or request a manual update of lp from code.launchpad.net/PROJECT
they will be picked up automatically.
or you can upload a pot file you have.

the pot is in the github tree - do I need to tell launchpad where in the tree - if so how?
... ok - "help translation" option on the project page is what I needed.
ok I'm on the staging area - I presume that is why nothing is in the import queue?

1:25 PM
probably.
lp will search entire tree for the pots.
is the pot in its own directory?
thats a must.

its in a subfolder on github - its mixed up with other po's in that folder though ... github.com/fossfreedom/coverart-browser/tree/master/po

Thats okay.
justrename the pot to the gettext domain you want it to be in.
automatic import may not work on staging. or may take lot of time.
shows it will import as soon as possible..
once imported, they appear.

huh? package.pot --> ?

brb. call.
Gettext has a notion of translation domains..
you may want to have it same as application name, usually.

so my project is called "coverart-browser" - change the package.pot to "coverart-browser.pot" ?

1:33 PM
hyphens, i don't know.
may be omit it.
you can go ahead and use normal launchpad if you have a real project.
I thought it was just out of curiosity.
so suggested staging.

yes - its a real project :)
thanks for your help - I'll rename the pot and try on live launchpad.

2:31 PM
@jrg: I edited the question to make it no longer an exact duplicate.
@Web-E: Link to the question: askubuntu.com/questions/237321

3:14 PM
/me is back.
@fossfreedom pinged me?

hi-ya - ah yes - nice easy question for you to answer if you can please :) - askubuntu.com/questions/237342/…

@foss use the git url
git://github.com/fossfreedom/coverart-browser.git

not https:// ?

nope

@fossfreedom have you set up a default branch in Github?

3:17 PM
i set those up. So, I am quite sure ;)

yes - default is not master - its "release-0.6"

> This branch is an import of the HEAD branch of the Git repository at git://github.com/jokerdino/mechanig.git.

me thinks pointing at git://github.com/fossfreedom/coverart-browser.git will give me the release-0.6 branch?

it will only show the default branch..
you cant expose any other branch

okay. sorry, wasn't reading properly.

3:19 PM
@gertvdijk no, setting up the imports isn't as actually as it seems.

naff - so what's the workaround then ... by the way, you are building up your answer here ;)

there's an answer now
1
A: How to set up Launchpad to import from GitHub?

dobeyYou need to use the "read-only git location" as shown on github. It is the same as the web URL (which you have used), but with .git appended to the end. You need to add this to the end of your URL.

If you want to expose a particular branch, set it as the default

@gertvdijk doesnt work though... since the default branch is not master

revolve your development around it

3:22 PM
not really an answer though - since you would normally want people to download from the release branch not a development branch.

if that is a problem, you might want two different git repos

yuk... add that as an answer then.

lp can fetch only the default one. Thats mentioned in their blog post.
blog.launchpad.net/code/git-branch-imports-now-in-public-beta

^^^^

I was slow by 59 seconds, so instead upvoted that answer.

3:25 PM
that's from 2009 ... nothing has improved since then :(
@Mahesh so I suppose there is a manual method to upload existing .pot and po's rather than automatically?

yup.

import and export?

import into launchpad

did you set up translations?

in the launchpad project - yes.

3:29 PM
https://translations.launchpad.net/PROJECT/trunk/+translations-upload

yep - found it. cheers - I'll play.

:)

The package system is broken

Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them, since they are a common source of problems.
Furthermore run the following command in a Terminal: apt-get install -f

use paste.ubuntu.com to paste the results of sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

is this the last hope or anything else is possible

i have a broadcom

@FarhanKarim on 12.10 - you'll need to look at some logs and post the results - you may have to even test newer kernels depending on the results. I would suggest post a question on the site - but look at this question first askubuntu.com/questions/236119/…

@jrg you need to work on your accept rate :/

@jrg I have finished that course, I guess.

I don't get this accept rate thingy. I have Qs with junk answers there. The only way to get the rate up is by accepting it, which is a bad idea...

@gertvdijk sometimes that happens...

@gertvdijk Do not accept bad answers just to bump accept rate.

@Mahesh no I don't. that's my point.

Try bountying if you feel thats worth it.
