@jokerdino i must agree, you have got a point.
hey @izx, it's closed already

izx
@msPeachy Yes, but closed questions wander the hallways at night unless they are then deleted (yes, it's a pain...)

why are they not deleted?
how many votes needed to delete?
@jrg can delete it

anyone familiar with build recipes? i think that could solve this guy:

Q: How to force Quickly to NOT include a dependency? (Specifically: apport)

Peter LeviMy case is this - the quickly-generated application contains some apport code, so quickly inserts python-apport in the dependencies list. I would like the application to be installable and run on Linux Mint as well, where this package is missing. I would like to wrap the apport code in a try/exce...

izx
@msPeachy 3 delete votes (10+) or one mod vote ;)

jrg
Not deleting closed questions means that we have the opportunity to A. Fix our mistakes, B. Not appear like nazi overlords.

11:06 AM
@jrg I agree. Newbies will find it very offensive

@jrg you mean you're not nazi overlords ;)

jrg
Now, deleting those cruddy answers, well, lets just say that's fine by me. :)

for sure. i was wink wink nudge nudging it was sarcasm

well, what good will it give to the site? if it's not useful, will not contribute to future users, we might as well delete it, that's what I think.

jrg
On a "keep the site clean" level I agree with you, on a moderation and community level, I don't, for the reason @hakermania pointed out.

izx
11:11 AM
@msPeachy After a sufficient grace period, I think closed questions other than exact duplicates should probably be deleted...

"Partially because I like apples a lot and partially because Apple comes ahead of Atari in the phone book...and I used to work for Atari" -- Jobs on why they chose the name Apple. Got to love a snarky sense of humor

@izx this. After some time. Not immediately

jrg
@izx and I could get behind that, but we'd never reach a consensus on what a good grace period is. 30? 90? 10?

Someone with delete votes should ask for a definitive time-line on meta.
I don't have a dog in the fight

Hi Guys, Has anyone tried streaming multiple tv channels using VLC or any kind software on Ubuntu?

izx
11:14 AM
And there is also some logic in closing long-abandoned unanswered questions just because they've been abandoned...
Talking months at least, there ^^^

jrg
@aking1012: Do not let us forget what he actually did there - he proceeded to subcontract Woz, and then payed him what, an quarter of what Jobs made? ;p

@izx there has to be a query for that.

jrg
@achu: nope, I haven't. Sorry.

@jrg ?

@jrg very true. i also didn't realise how closely connected Apple and MS were in the early days

11:15 AM
Hey @jrg Thanks for replay :)

jrg
@aking1012: Yeah, you have some shrewd lawyers trying to improve MS's standing with the DoJ to thank for that one.

I need to do this project using Ubuntu or any kind opensource application. Don't wanna pay for it ;)

jrg
(I assume by "early days" you mean the '90s. :P)

pre-90s
@Achu The issue i see with that is how many channels you can tune to with your tuner card. I don't see it being a vlc limitation...I see it being a hardware limitation

:( The thing is that nobody really knows that Apple stole 'windows' as an idea from a Greek company !

11:18 AM
@aking1012 I need to tune 5 channels using one TV card. wired? not possible?

with stuff like the cherrypi coming out though...i think it's only a matter of time until we have a little box that you set to a channel and it just streams it
@Achu I don't know. I haven't touched a TV card in a LONG time (before Picture in Picture existed)

@aking1012 Actually, i bring 5 channels using two satellite decoders(receivers) and i can watch them switching using TV card application.
@aking1012 lol

if you can access the feeds simultaneously in some other software, it should be theoretically possible.

@msPeachy i think i do

@aking1012 yeah.. the problem is i can not access them simultaneously :)

11:21 AM
which is probably a card limitation

@jrg Not deleting question that was closed some couple of months means?
we are low on manpower?

@Achu So, your hardware needs 2 tuners

izx
OK, 1+ year abandoned "too localized" incoming, close if you please:

To get 2 streams

and 5 tuners for 5 streams

@aking1012 When i stream one channel using VLC RTP fine, the TV card application can not access the TV card. Yest it seems hardware limitation
@AmithKK Two TV cards?

like this hardware should theoretically be able to handle two streams at a time:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116036&nm_mc=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r&cm_mmc=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r-_-Video+Devices+++TV+Tuners-_-Hauppauge-_-15116036

Five TV Cards or one TV card with 5 tuners

izx
Are we talking about DVB or Analog/PAL/NTSC?

@AmithKK One TV card with 5 tuners? that sound is nice. What kind of TV card is like that?

11:23 AM
None that I know of
@izx I'm assuming DVB

yeah but you are correct i need to have 5 tv cards
But, do you know guys any live TV streamer for office use.
5 users need to access Different channel on there computer. that is the requirement
5 Different channel :)

izx
^ I defer to your wisdom :P

@izx I will let you know if i successfully implement this ;)

i still say some lightweight hobby board with a tv decoder so you have 5 small "streamer-boxes"

btw, community voting for appshowdown begins

11:32 AM
link and pin?

@izx 15 days is sufficient

why are my sinuses exploding

@aking1012 serious?

i am afraid Joey won't mention nitroshare.
@aking1012 ouch seriously?

11:35 AM
yes seriously

@hakermania I think we are being "too" nice to the newbies

@izx it's gonna take some time
Btw, do take a look at @hakermania's formatjunkie!

izx
@jokerdino Sounds very interestings (audio/video/image format converter)

i guess he liked my answer...

This appears to be the only reasonable interpretation of "God-Max":

Q: Backup 150 gb Partition on 8gb Disk?

BigGeniusHow can i take backup of this disk. Only 150 mb ubuntu installtions and package files + Custom Directories.

11:44 AM
Why does that remind me of voltron?

biggenius strikes again ^^

@msPeachy Being "too" nice.

why are people lazy in downvoting?

@izx lolzer
@Mahesh /me points to the two meta questions.

/me silent

izx
The obvious/silly solution guy is just stirring the pot, his voting rate was something like 0.3 votes/day!

i think my downvotes range more than that.

@jokerdino don't you agree?

800 downvotes in 305 days

who?

11:49 AM
@msPeachy agree with we being too nice? yes.
@msPeachy my voting stat

good

izx
@msPeachy Blame @ObsessiveFOSS for that; I told them Clonezilla was a good solution in chat but he insisted that instead of backing up, BG should learn how to fix his f-ups with a LiveCD or some such :/

i dropped a comment about with a link to the community documentation about backing up with tar...
his next question will be "what is tar" or something

i wont be surprised.

OMG is controlled by?

11:55 AM
Joey

ohkay. he said that they are coming up with a list of top 20 must have apps.

This is not a place for whiners, leechers, lazy members. If you've got a problem, Google it, search for it, if still you can't find it, then post a question but you should help the community help you by posting clear, concise and complete questions and provide feedbacks when answers are given.
3

and I am worried that this is injustice, as it can add lot of bias..

@Mahesh yeah :/
@msPeachy well said :P
i just want to clarify. Are you referring to me when you say whiners? :P

lol

11:57 AM
@Mahesh you mean the 20 must have is going to tilt the field? probably or the starred one?

@jokerdino any doubts? :P

nope, will get back to flagging now @jokerdino

@Mahesh pfft

@aking1012 the 20 apps get a lot of exposure compared to others.

@msPeachy thanks

11:58 AM
@Mahesh well if he runs a blog, it's kind of an outlet for opinion to begin with...just saying
the number of readers is directly proportional to how often his opinion is interesting or correct...so...

well, if you want to review something, you can do it on 2buntu :P

@aking1012 agreed, but not convinced, and still concerned.

i am sure Roland won't mind.

Well, sure...dislike it. It's just a way to say the person wrote an app but also tries to help out...

Hello

@ObsessiveFOSS o/

@aking1012 if that's what we want to convey, all's fine. and this actually sounds good.

I didn't submit anything, so it's not like I'm trying to get myself to the top of the list

12:04 PM
but somehow, i think putting it in a more better way would be better.

well, if you want to put it better, install everything and use your judgment

@aking1012 lets promote nitroshare!!!! :D :P

@aking1012 could be a good title.
someone on planet should write up a post ;p
it already was mentioned on webupd8 btw

wait.. how many users know what samba is?
@jokerdino yup. mentioned more than once, i guess.

@Mahesh yes.
at least once IIRC

@ObsessiveFOSS Hi Ossie

@izx I demand that I am not called "Ossie".

@hakermania I just happened to run into it somehow.

@izx any doubts?

izx
@aking1012 I think I've vented my irritation at his enabling BigG, so there, back to @ObsessiveFOSS again :)

kk

@jokerdino do you like it? Any feedback?

izx
12:18 PM
@Mahesh Depends how "nice" we want to be....

@hakermania like i said, i think it can be useful

trash niceness.

haven't actually used it. just saw by the screenshot.

@Mahesh you have to be relatively nice to have a ppa

(i am on 12.10)

12:19 PM
usability is important, at times, too much niceness breaks hell loose and does more damage.
@aking1012 ppa? hows that related?

@jokerdino back in windows I used Format Factory and I really missed such a program in Linux. You had to download 20 different programs to do the conversions you wanted and some of them weren't so user-friendly. So Format Junkie was born :D

@Mahesh ppa, ubuntu code of conduct, be-nice clause

@hakermania :D

ohkay.

izx
Well, it's not like we're leaving snarky comments...

12:20 PM
we are nice, we are friendly, what else then are we doing if not being nice. I'm just saying there are times that we should be strict, cos if we don't the site will be filled with *** and will decline. being "too" nice and "babying" newbies is not the way to go. just saying
2

well, you got a deb for 12.10?

izx
@jokerdino BFS

@jokerdino of course now I have to work in 2 projects (Wallch & Format Junkie) but that's not the case, because I'm really enjoying them myself ;)

@izx i did for myagenda

@aking1012 Thanks for reminding

12:21 PM
@msPeachy that sounds a little familiar :P

@izx snark has a place. i recall someone citing on camera that they called something crack-pipe insane... just saying generally nice/helpful but not with infinite tolerance for the opposite of helpful

@jokerdino really?

@hakermania oh how can i forget wallch. I am using it atm :P
and thanks for that too
@msPeachy just saying. those thoughts are in my head

@jokerdino its in everyone's head.

okkk

12:22 PM
@jokerdino you should totally install the PPA before the 4th release, it contains many fixes and new features: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wallch/3+
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wallch

lol, ^^

@hakermania ppa. hm
on it.

@msPeachy nobody said about "babying" newbies. Just don't say 'DONT DO THIS IDIOT' xD
@jokerdino need your feedback there, too. I am currently working on a live website feature.
A website of your preference on your desktop :D

oh wow. i would put ask ubuntu in there :P

I refer to me being everyone in my posts. and I've developed a feeling that when you are being sensible, you are not the only one with those thoughts. and it holds good a good number of times..

12:24 PM
inspired by this question:askubuntu.com/questions/174552/… (!)

Is /etc/rc.d/init.d/ the right place for init scripts on Ubuntu?

That's why I like askubuntu! Some times you learn by yourself from other's questions that you are trying to answer :)

@hakermania that is nice of you.
i have noted when i sometimes edit and improve a question, i would see an awesome answer of yours there.

jrg
@aking1012 another e-learning resource to put in your cap. - saylor.org

Someone: Quick question: Is /etc/rc.d/init.d/ the right place for init scripts on Ubuntu?

12:26 PM
@ObsessiveFOSS dont know. Ask BG?
@hakermania installing wallch3. got formatjunkie for 12.10 or i have to BFS?

@jokerdino thanks goo.gl/wWsAQ

jrg
@ObsessiveFOSS proper is relative. It "works".

izx
@ObsessiveFOSS There is NO /etc/rc.d folder on 12.04...

@hakermania lol

@izx Where, then?

12:27 PM
@jrg nice. there needs to be a correlation between that, the MIT stuff, the Princeton stuff, and the NY Poly Infosec open courseware

jrg
and I think you mean just /etc/init.d

izx
There is rcN.d and init.d

OK.
@jrg Thanks...

@jokerdino I don't know what BFS is but I haven't even touched 12.10 yet, so I haven't built something for there.... And chroot doesn't seem to be for me :(

jrg
@aking1012 Did not know about the latter, i guess I know what I'm doing next week. :)

12:28 PM
@hakermania lol, not "babying" doesn't literally means we should call them names either, we just need to maybe reduce our level of tolerance for such stu* and laziness.

jrg
and yes, there is definitely a need for all that.

@hakermania hmm wallch ppa fails for quantal. BFS - build from source

izx
init.d is good enough for a classic init script...

@msPeachy hey students is not a swear word.

izx
/etc/rc.local is good for post-boot one-offs

@jokerdino lol

:)

@msPeachy give an example, please
@jokerdino I am not going to release anything for quantal (at least till alpha 2 I assume)

jrg
@aking1012 Oh my, I'm going to be in heaven.

@hakermania we are on alpha3 :P

jrg
12:30 PM
@hakermania yeah, we're practically released already.

@jokerdino going virtualbox
:D

:)

jrg
it's actually pretty stable, i've reinstalled a grand total of like 3 times this cycle. normally its a lot more than that.

@jokerdino download link?

@hakermania example of stupid, useless, unclear, lazy questions???? too many

12:30 PM
@msPeachy and the solution would be to close them?

for the crack madness quote reference from earlier 3:10 or so:

@jokerdino thanks
@all afk, gonna eat some steaks 8-)

@hakermania no. don't take it that way

?
@jok give me direct if you want

12:32 PM
we are talking about questions that are abandoned for months and have not been improved despite asked for details
@hakermania ok have a good meal

@jokerdino oh, I thought you were talking about the 12.10 xD
@jokerdino ok bye

@hakermania haha. lol 12.10 is fun
