Can you answer this? Problems with Psychonauts and the Ubuntu Software Center? http://askubuntu.com/q/175837?atw=1 #softwarecenter

@jrg that's something i did't think about fixing since kivy would change the fix anyway...so it's not worth it until i re-implement

@aking1012 In my case, that sort of thing happens a lot.

any thoughts on the other ui components (the way i organise help etc?)
the selection logic would work in reverse on a final product (i select the target first then the translated to etc etc)
i just needed to get something a little sloppy to market FAST

jrg
@Flabricorn ok. :)
@aking1012 shrugs Ok.

@jrg i know a pure pygi implementation would be nice...and i would do it if i have time. but people want pretty. so anything functional but not pretty is just proof of work
again thanks for giving it a rudimentary go. it's one of those thing a lot of people won't do
i just need the adequate notation ... that you gave ... about the "right things to focus on" for future development
if it worked in the opposite fashion, click and drag + solving in the opposite order - would you have anything to be upset about?
that's the really important part since i think all the features you want are planned but not implemented

12:16 AM
Question: who exactly can see the reviewing history in the new review?

@izx everyone

izx
That doesn't sound ideal, could lead to comment/downvote wars in some cases....

possibly, but we had this discussion earlier, and i commented on the merits of that case

izx
Link please? (if you have the time)
Personally, IDC...it's not so much about anonymity per se, but if people start contesting too much (this isn't off-topic! my suggested edit wasn't too minor! here, downvote for you!), I'll just not bother responding to any explain yourself comments, and hey, downvotes are the least of my worries.

12:23 AM
@izx i think it's in this area:
23 hours ago, by aking1012
definitely. i close-voted one already. i just made an observation that close reason for quick pattern recognition on "4 people said it's a dupe of 1 question" would make it even more awesome
sorry if that's vague, but i got you to the right window at least and i was tired since i had already sorted 6 or so

@aking1012 sounds like the game progress is going well

izx
np

@mateo_salta it's basically done. i just need it to be funded before i can complete

izx
@aking1012 "maybe when it hits "normal india time" we'll see a surge of activity " <--- ROFLcopter @ "NIT"

cool, hope that goes well

12:26 AM
we'll see
i'm on quite the deadline...so it could be eipc or it could flop
i'm confident it's a good idea though

izx
@aking1012 "funded" how?

did you settle on a site for the funding?

izx
oh via kickstarter or similar?

@izx well i'm very close to my final revision for the kickstarter and a link for pledgie. i decided it was best to do both, but for different reasons
@mateo_salta that was directed at both of you

izx
Sounds good, please do post both when ready.

12:29 AM
pledgie for "give him money regardless...it's a damn good idea" and kickstarter for "it's a project i think should reach endgame"

well send a link when it is done, do you have a logo though up

that or "expectation of pledgie is off-map so i think i'll just send something through pledgie"
either way... but that's the reasoning
that and i know i don't have mateo on g+ so proposed edits?:
Kickstarter draft

Why make it:
There are differing word games for differing platforms. I would like to put together a single cryptogram word game that works across all platforms. With the way I currently have it put together, it would be simple to package for Linux and Windows, but the interface could really use some tweaking and prettying up.
To be fair, we're talking about something that is usually just text in a newspaper or puzzle magazine on newsprint.

Non-technical explanation followed by technical explanation:
download link for try-out: sendspace.com/file/6cmwke
just give the shell script a shot and comment out bs4 if you don't already have it

jrg
@aking1012 i don't think it would matter.

@jrg ?

I'll have to try it when I get home @aking1012

12:34 AM
it's a one-quote demo, but it demonstrates game functinoality

so one chance to get bored with it. Then test it over and over!

no, it's basically a first round demo to say "this is how the game would work. it's not a diablo beta...it's a do you think game mechanics are right" type of thing
see @jrg 's complaint earlier and how valid but not necessary it was type of thing

proof-of-concept?

jrg

if it worked in the opposite fashion, click and drag + solving in the opposite order - would you have anything to be upset about?
i was replying to that.

yes if you see that area it should just make sense
something like that. like it sort of works, but most of the UI improvements would make the gameplay improvements on the gtk version obsolete. it's stupid to implement it

12:39 AM
so make notes, get funding and ideas, and momentum, choose how best to make the "visual" changes, and make a final product.. that sort of thing?

basically yes. i already knew most of what @jrg said i just didn't have it done b/c it would become superfluous
make sense?

think so.

@mateo_salta basically you are correct

so no comments about the theme when I review the program...

with the addition of some gameplay changes that don't relate to game logic but do relate to the gui toolkit used
@mateo_salta you are welcome to complain about it. it would even be good. it's just that i might say "that is solved in the UI redo"
make sense?

12:46 AM
yep.
I'll have a good look at it tomorrow, I'm doing multimedia projection at the same time right now, so that's why I'm slow to respond

np...it's just something to take a look at when you have time. it's not like i'm paying you

nah, but remember this is my pastime so its not a job for me
It's fun!

i take your point, but you take my counterpoint as well i suppose

yeah, I won't stress about it

cool. it is a slightly different ui so i'm kind of wondering if pepole will love it or hate it
that's my a-game motivation for asking people

12:53 AM
how's it going @Chan-HoSuh

^-- that...haven't seen you in a while.

thought this was a cool read @aking1012 penny-arcade.com/2011/10/12

all i got out of that was apply at simultronics... just saying

lol
I was thinking about the cryptography stuff...

1:08 AM
it's a game. target area is a bonus. acquisition area is a bonus...it's all a bonus
i just have to have my mission decision by Friday...

big day?

an impossible deadline that was given to me by outside forces
so yes, big day

jrg
Ahg crap. There goes the only customer who showed interest.

@jrg ?

sorry @jrg...i tried...

jrg
1:13 AM
Maybe I should have considered piracy for my summer job. I'm sure I'd have made a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts.
3
@aking1012 lol.

"Have you ever considered piracy? You'd make a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts."

that's hilarious...just saying

jrg
blech. anyway, what should I do Monday? Looks like i've got a full empty day ahead of me.

oh no, I see a photoshop opp! watch out @jrg tomorrow I will be on my mac.

jrg
.............. excuse me while I run away. I need a plane to Tarshesh ASAP.
or a boat. Or a floating piece of wood.
something to get me away from a internet connection before my retinas are scarred forever.
@rolandtaylor: Yo, gtalk when you get home.
Need to talk to you about what I can cook up between now and Monday as a emergency backup. :(
there should be test driven documentation.

1:44 AM
@jrg given unforeseen possibilities can you post that code on github so somebody else can work on it?

jrg
@aking1012 Which code? Your python game, or are you talking about something else?

that code

THE code?

jrg
I'm still confused.

jrg
1:45 AM
59.

yup the whole of it. i don't want people confused about it. if i can't complete it, it should be public domain

jrg
nods Well, I'm not sure what circumstances those might be, but yes, I can do that.

just had an interesting conversation and i thought i should ask someone to maintain or release it
@jrg ty. it means more than you know

jrg
CC0 or something like MIT or BSD?
(I assume you don't want GPL, considering your remarks on it in the past.)

like i said before in the proposal. if for some reason i don't complete it, it should be BSD or something compat so it's free-for-all

jrg
1:49 AM
@aking1012 You're welcome. Lets hope circumstances don't transpire like that.
Ok, understood.

we'll see. it's just a contingency

jrg
and no, all the rest of you wonderful open source developers, I will not be the executor of your digital remains. ;P
train your kid to use git, run tests and apply patches/merge pull requests. ;)

hang in there @aking1012 later.

2:14 AM
@jrg Today, and tommorow, I'm making a new website to replace my heroku app - mainly because the heroku app was indeed hit by some very nice internet "trolls" who gave me feedback on how I needed auth and whatnot. So, in a two day rush, since my experience with Ruby is limited to what I learned in your class, I'm doing a wordpress site. I know, shun me. But it actually looks kind of awesome.

jrg
@Flabricorn Oh, that was me i think. ;)
oh no, i did that to someone elses demo. anyway, go right ahead with a wordpress site.
those are fun. :D

izx
How do you filter out deleted answers in the Data Explorer? ClosedDate doesn't seem to exist and PostHistoryTypeId is not set to deleted...

@jrg :) Still I need something a little more substantial. Here's the work in progress. gdg.greendoorgames.com Remember that this is essentially the first fifteen minutes of work, progress will be expected in many areas.

jrg
Nice!!

@jrg Most of the fifteen minutes was finding the Canonical theme. Regretting my subdomain URL choice but cpanel locked me out. The guardian of the Cpanel password has forgotten it and was relying on autofill, so maybe I'll go in later and set all of the database entries to a new url. Or maybe I'll just trash this place and make a whole new website... decisions, decisions.

jrg
2:19 AM
@Flabricorn when you get back in town i'd be happy to pair with you on a rails blog - a proper one.

@jrg That sounds like fun, don't know how free my schedule will end up what with the school and whatnot, but as soon as I get back, I'm ordering a new macbook screen, repairing the macbook I got, and then I'll have a free laptop from somewhere between 2006-08 but, all the same it's better than a P4 and a hell of a lot more portable.
@jrg I just hope that one day I'll be able to afford a System 76.

Happy Idependance day

@AmithKK Happy Independence day to you too!

Hello all \o/
@jrg Isn't heroku slow?

jrg
@Flabricorn: Likewise on the system76. They are expensive. :(
@amithkk not slow. Just limiting.

2:30 AM
@jrg You shouldn't have pulled out of the App Showdown, you might've been able to win one.

jrg
Ok, one of you might know better. Can I minor in two things, or do I have to major in something?

@jrg Suggest me a near free(?) VPS please :D

jrg
@Flabricorn: Nah.
@amithkk nobody worth recommending out there.

Not even for just 2 years?

@jrg Well, the apps that won were pretty flashy. I think personally, 2nd should have won first, I found the application more useful, but it's not up to me is it.

jrg
2:33 AM
Let me rephrase that @amith: I've got limited experience with VPS providers, and on both occasions they cost me big time. Was worth it, but they still cost.

ah :P

jrg
@flabricorn: Yeah, I know. shrug what's done is done.

@jrg do mods get captchas?

jrg
@amith all the time.

@jrg I'm probably going to sleep now, mostly because I didn't last night. Farewell!

jrg
2:35 AM
Night!

BBL School

3:03 AM
Good morning

Can you answer this? Can not move anything in Ubuntu 12.04 http://askubuntu.com/q/175510?atw=1 #unity

@msPeachy hi hi hi

morning to you

3:21 AM
what's up?

printing
you?

@msPeachy that sort of makes you polar opposites doesn't it?? you're printing he's writing...

working on a 3D model in Blender3D

@aking1012 :)) morning

sorry for the delays
internet had cut out

3:30 AM
I'm printing my test paper on a stencil paper

@msPeachy yes,,,it is

@aking1012 opposites... <insert end of cliche here>
@msPeachy oh I see you have a test this morning?

@aking1012 I guess we are
it isn't morning there, I forgot
good evening then

in my house, it is always morning lol
so you're not wrong
we say good morning to people all the time

@RolandTaylor this afternoon, just making sure all is set.

3:32 AM
@msPeachy cool
What is it on?

on?

I mean what's the subject of the test

Oh, word processing

cool
I should be able to pass it then

have to give a hands-on exam, setting up the main file to be shared on the network, students will modify the file based on the instructions given
you should it is very easy

3:36 AM
:} I'll be the star of the class
if... I can get there...
Calls NASA

lol
you have 90 minutes

e_e I hope they have an express lane in space

not sure

oh here's an interesting question that just crossed my mind

never been on space before

3:40 AM
as a teacher,
@msPeachy lol same here
Do you ever get nervous giving a test?

giving a test? not really, but I'd feel bad every time a student fails my test

Oh
that is actually one reason I didn't become teacher, even though people kept telling me (and still do) to do it
I commend you for braving it!

4:01 AM
@RolandTaylor sorry got dc

you should try, if the writing don't go to well
:))

I think I will be quite successful with writing lol
I have done one on one lessons (could call it tutoring I guess) before
and I've considered doing computer classes for older persons who need to learn to use the computer
but as for knowing that someone could fail - that part just scares me away from teaching.

test 1 of my exam
well, there are hopeless cases, students who really has a very very very low IQ

In my eyes, everyone is born with the same level of intelligence - but different expressions of it.
(Most people don't agree but I'm happy to stand alone on that view).

4:08 AM
hmmnn just think of some of the people who post here on AU, some really are that you know
some doesn't even use common sense or lacks common sense

That's often a result of upbringing, environmental factors in early development, and sometimes a choice to "be stupid", to put it bluntly.
Every person is born with the same level of ability - but in different areas. Some people just never build on the foundation.
Others dig into the foundation, and just keep digging... so they seem negatively intelligent :P

fair point as @aking1012 would say

e_e my ear is itching - where I got bitten
(sorry for random topic change but it's a weee bit scary lol)

lol
put cotton balls in it
got a clogged nose

it stopped
It's coming and going
@msPeachy from the flu?

4:17 AM
yes

try garlic and pepper in warm water
(weird solution, but believe it or not it works)

it's quite difficult to get rid of. I spend most of the day in an air conditioned room (classroom) but when I get off work, its too hot outside, I guess that's one of the factors

(it's also disgusting - like most medicine :D)

i like garlic

@msPeachy oh yeah that is definitely one of the factors
@msPeachy oh nice

4:20 AM
but not raw garlic

well yeah that's the problem
it's raw garlic and cayenne pepper
in warm water
it tastes like o0O_O0o
but it works like :)

lol
I'm not sure if I want to try it.

lol
you sound like me when my mother suggested it lol

funny I was Googling on remedies for clogged up nose and I got into a site called partyvibe and a guy was asking on what to do when his nose is clogged up from snorting coke!

O_O
LOOOOOOOOOOOOL

4:28 AM
yeah I didn't actually looked at the url I just clicked on the link, it was 5th from the search results so I clicked on it

I have the perfect solution
Don't snort coke.
:D

LOL
where's everybody?

:P
@msPeachy the experiment went wrong

what experiment?

It's classified.
Everyone is either dead or close.

4:33 AM
lol

I survived because, well, I don't know.

cos you hang on a rope?

haha
lol yeah :D
you were gone too long and I gave up hope
somehow, I survived

lol
I was looking for you

I was invisible
lol not really, I was afk - someone was over and then I had dinner, and then I watched Joseph Prince on TV :P

4:40 AM
lol, i meant it as a reply to your first message, thought it was a joke
you had dinner in less than 10 minutes?

no, I got disconnected then
ohhhh
lol

are you on gchat?

I am so discouraged... the Precise build failed.

@msPeachy yep

What does that even mean?

4:44 AM
@GeorgeEdison it is deep.

@GeorgeEdison pick yourself up and try again?

@GeorgeEdison Autotools?

Autotools.

I have the solution:
1. Go to a bar.
2. Start drinking.
On a serious note, what is it you're compiling?

@RolandTaylor: I just have to share something of yours here - it's from earlier.

4:52 AM
:D

Lol. Lol. And lol.

i don't see it yet, is it that funny?

Yeah it is :D
you will love it

lol, yeah i see it already, it was loading a bit slow so delayed reaction

4:57 AM
lol cool
I'm going to switch computers shortly

have a class in 5 minutes, gtg
be back after 3 hours
and you should be sleeping by then
night

:(
I didn't get to throw a paper plane

5:14 AM
I'm streaming audio using A2DP via Bluetooth... but the sound seems a little... distorted.
The quality is excellent but I get the feeling the pitch is slightly altered.
Weird, I know...

Q: Why is libtool is throwing "unsupported hardcode properties" errors and what do they mean?

George EdisonI am cross-compiling gettext-0.18.2 for Windows but running into some problems. During the linking stages of one of the shared libraries, libtool gives me the following error message: /bin/bash ../libtool --tag=CXX ... libtool: link: unsupported hardcode properties libtool: link: See the libtool...

o/

5:33 AM
Interesting...
Precise's build invokes libtool without a compiler name.
Quantal's build uses i686-w64-mingw32-g++ as it should.

5:54 AM
Aha!
Quantal:
checking for g++... i686-w64-mingw32-g++
checking whether the C++ compiler (i686-w64-mingw32-g++ -O2 -Wl,--disable-auto-import) works... yes
Precise:
checking for g++... i686-w64-mingw32-g++
checking whether the C++ compiler (i686-w64-mingw32-g++ -O2 -Wl,--disable-auto-import) works... no
So those configure logs are useful after all.
WAIT A MINUTE.
Heads over to packages.ubuntu.com...
That's it! That's it!
So on Precise, the C++ compiler isn't a dependency of the mingw-w64 package.
But it is on Quantal.
So that would explain why the build is failing only on Precise.
Time to get this fixed and upload the build that will... succeed!

Q: How to make small, but important, edits?

ubnewbie2I ask because I just recently tried to correct a post that had a command in it - but the command was wrong. The poster had typed chwon instead of chown. Of course this means it would not work. However askubuntu would not let me make an edit smaller than 6 characters. I feel it is important...

6:11 AM
@GeorgeEdison congrats.

Should I answer a question which already has an accepted answer? http://meta.askubuntu.com/q/3803?atw=1

6:26 AM
@Mahesh Well to be technical, the congrats come after it builds.
But at least I understand what's going on now.

I have a habit of congratulating when things go wrong and are later figured out. That is what consumes most resources. successful building, looks trivial to me.
@TheInterrupter when did you start tweeting meta??

hey guys :)
Quick question - What's the pre-forma comment for buying recommendations?
I remember seeing it one of Jorge's comments
or so, I think I might have....

6:49 AM
pokes.

@jokerdino pokes back :P

Ouch~

lol :P Why blood? same blood :P

haha

he he he :P

6:54 AM
