12:00 AM
only on wifi

I'm trying to determine if my problem is:

a. Only with software installation (thus the server I'm using).
b. A problem with the network stack (and thus affecting everything (seems not to be based on testing).
c. My ISP (not sure yet - have to test on other systems).

jrg
I'd bet a.

It started recently, and it seems only to be affecting web browsing and installing software, but torrents (downloaded Xubuntu 12.04 the other day) seems pretty much normal (though a little less fast than before).

Bounty offered: How to always show all breadcrumbs in nautilus? http://askubuntu.com/q/97326?atw=1 #nautilus

It could be c. because my ISP recently had some technical difficulties and it began after they came back online.

dupe of one of a question i answered by putting it in ppa?

Q: How do I find the dependencies of aircrack-ng?

EvoandroidEvoI have been trying for a day now to install a package thats given as source code and everything i have tried gives me errors and i would like to know if theres a way to look in the files or something other than looking on the Internet or site of the program for dependencies.

or a generic rdepends question or both???

those aren't even letters!

@mateo_salta ahaha

sure they are it says YYYYMMMCA foreInc

what?

...my joke was lost through explanation...

12:24 AM
oh

i take it you get the joke now...
@anyone with an opinion - kickstarter or pledgie? any opinions?

I've heard of kickstarter... not sure, what are you kickstarting, or pledging

jrg
@aking1012 kickstarter is where the crowds are, but kickstarter is where you need to have a professional demo and stuff.

@jrg i thought a basic function demo would be sufficient enough to possibly garner feature adds

jrg
@aking1012 shrugs Just an observation.

12:28 AM
@jrg i completely agree. i was initially turned off since you couldn't ground-up software in tech (but i have seen people do games under the game section with some pretty poor video and get 20k-ish)

jrg
@aking1012 You also have the added advantage of doing it for Ubuntu.

@jrg added advantage of feature add to cross-platform but specifically targeting ubuntu AND windows with python 2 and 3 support + handhelds if i get enough funding to rework the UI with kivvy
just saying...it's full of win

@mateo_salta exactly so. i have a functional demo, but it's not pretty. i want to prettify it and add options

I wish there was a version of dd that had an option for a verbose mode like wget's verbose mode
(progress bar, speed, eta)

12:35 AM
@mateo_salta i would add a clause that if for some reason i don't accomplish the checkboxes i laid out that the code becomes re-spin-able instead of open source proprietary license
@adempewolff that would be easy enough to implement...if you think people actually want it and you're sure it doesn't exist. i think something like acronis or paragon already more than fills that niche though

so, you can re use it if the kickstart thing goes down in flames.

@aking1012 I guess I am more wishing that dd itself had this option in it already. I can generally count on any linux based system I ever find myself on to have dd already installed, but not all would have internet access to download alternatives

the current license when boiled down as far as it can go amounts to:
Free for personal use with the ad_bar

If you like it or want the TODOs checked off,
then there is a pledgie campaign.
I'm also trying to get it in to USC as a minimum price app($5 USD or so).

No derivative works beyond personal use
@mateo_salta no so if i fail someone else can have it clearly without violating some retarded license agreement

woo!
new review queue is here!

@JorgeCastro grats on getting solved for that aircrack question, but it has quite the list of dependencies if you want all the options...

12:41 AM
feel free to edit them in!

ok, cool @aking1012

oh man, the vote close stuff is excellent

@JorgeCastro \o/ we don't have to read through your comment queue any more...
i really thought that would get a humour star where's @Mahesh when I need him...

man
I totally just burned through all my close votes at once
AWESOME

a number of people who voted for what reason on that HUD would be useful...just saying

A: Blender wont save images

Roland TaylorYou have to manually save renders. First you start with a scene you want to render. After setting up your image settings, hit f12 to Render. Now you will get a rendered image in your viewport (under the UV/Image editor). However, this image is not saved automatically. To save it, you need t...

not that i don't like it...it's awesome. i just think i found a piece that would make it better

@RolandTaylor what are we rofling about?

(See the images)
(In my answer above)

@RolandTaylor nevermind... i thought you were above that juvenile a joke though
it still got an upvote though because it's surely factually correct

jrg
12:54 AM
i'm obviously missing something

:) everyone needs a chance to let the inner child out from time to time (:
@jrg click me (you know you want to)

jrg
@RolandTaylor ...

xD
full sized image

@jrg wikipedia phallic symbol...

ok so this new review system will really help with the junk
it just queues up everything with a close vote
and lets you just churn through them

jrg
12:56 AM
@JorgeCastro it got rolled out?
/me hasn't looked at /review in a week.

yeah I just used it
finally!

jrg
oh sweet that looks amazing

definitely. i close-voted one already. i just made an observation that close reason for quick pattern recognition on "4 people said it's a dupe of 1 question" would make it even more awesome

well i wouldn't lie to you peeps...just sayin
oh wait...how have only 3 people used it...that's not good
maybe when it hits "normal india time" we'll see a surge of activity

jrg
12:59 AM
only 3 people have used it all time, it got rolled out what, two hours ago max?

i noted more website views in my 1and1 hud when i added the website to my stack account...is there a rep-threshold for the beta? or is it just because nobody uses the review tab?

jrg
I think it's just nobody uses /review

jokerdino will wet himself when he sees it i'm sure
4
and i mean that in the nicest and most complimentary way possible

@jrg yes, yes i can

jrg
1:04 AM
because if so, i sure hope they make that a 20K and mod-only tool when they make it official.
crap. that's going to cause all sorts of problems in the future.

WAT? I would make all my votes public if I could

jrg
Yeah, so would I if I hadn't experienced the consequences first hand.

I'm willing to stand on every single one of them for a valid reason and serial down-voters being increased would be AWESOME if the penalties were increased

jrg
What happens is when votes like that are public, people start picking fights.

it's fine. if someone wants to pick a fight, that's great. you can see how many fights they've picked and if they're usually on the morally sound side
maybe i expect too much from users

jrg
1:07 AM
it's just a hassle to deal with. And the whole "I'm holier than thou because I've only been wrong twice" thing doesn't work with people. ;)

definitely fair. i guess i think grudge voting should in this world be over-ruled by awesome folks with super-community-votes ;)

jrg
heh.

213441265152351I managed to install google-chrome on an Ubuntu 7.10 system with --force-depends. i've suggested the group power vote thing a couple times...

jrg
1:10 AM
yup.

wow...that's an absurdly low version of ubuntu to try and do anything on. i only understand that when it's some issue with asic firmware or something and no packages. then it makes a smidgen of sense...but for anything running a web browser... REALLY

jrg
yeah.

Just saw the new review tool - I am in love.

Q: Is there a modern browser that runs on Windows 3.1?

hydroparadiseOk, so I know what you are thinking: "What on earth are you doing still running Windows 3.1?" Here's the situation. The computer running 3.1 is also the controller for $150,000 bandsaw made in Germany, so any chance of upgrading the actual computer without spending quite a bit of money up fron...

The real question is why anyone would use the bandsaw controller to log into your time tracking platform. — Oliver Salzburg May 10 at 21:29

@RolandTaylor how did you not see this... askubuntu.com/review-beta/close/stats

1:14 AM
@aking1012 not sure

@jrg i'm still logged in as socky over there...sadly socky has no closegoats

@jrg that tool is crazy, I think I need to slow down on It, but very cool

jrg
Heh.

A: Is there a modern browser that runs on Windows 3.1?

Roger DahlErr... Do you really want to give a second task to a computer from the stone age that is controlling a $150,000 bandsaw..? Judge to plaintiff: Tell us how you lost your arm. Plaintiff: Well, Bob was late to work that day and tried to punch the clock while I was using the bandsaw. Prosecutor to d...

@aking1012 you need closesheep. Much more effective.

I might get a lot of, what do you mean my answer should be a comment, later on

1:16 AM
@jrg eyes2

@RolandTaylor if it were going to be anything other than closegoats it would be closepigs
just grep it for pigs and fly ... relates to upvote

if you've ever used the phrase "I can only interpret that as an act of aggression" - you might be a reasonable human being back to topic at hand

okay, I'm off to try and install a 10.04 derivative onto cutting edge hardware (ivy bridge) and hope to god that it at least works well enough so I can boot into it and backport a newer kernel
2

Might I ask why?

1:24 AM
@adempewolff starred for trying to backport anything...and i do mean anything. it's a valiant effort sir

other day I tried using 11.10 live media and the graphics was unusable even in single user mode (solid screens of rapidly blinking colors) so I'm not optimistic
@RolandTaylor real time audio

Doesn't Ubuntu studio come with a real time kernel?

I use Tango Studio, which works really well and is already preconfiguring for the lowest latency possible

Yeah but is that really worth it? 10.04... is old.
That can mean security vulnerabilities and other problems.

@RolandTaylor yes it does

1:26 AM
true, but manually configuring a newer version would day at least a day

so I'm going to give it a try, then patch/compile a 3.2 RT kernel and hope for the best

I guess I don't know enough to argue, but I would rather go through the trouble if it were me.

I think in a year or two, even mainline Ubuntu might work well for pro-audio
but as it is, the IRQ handling is still funky as heck
which reeks havoc with trying to record with usb/firewire audio interfaces

1:29 AM
I would just try out a realtime kernel on vanilla latest kernel and stick with that. It means you're helping the edgers...kind of like supporting python3 in pygi apps...just saying

@aking1012 yeah, I considered it. but when I use this OS, I'm generally in recording music mode, and not in the mood for debugging computer issues
or *that OS rather

that's a fair point. i just meant that any future work i might do is geared to future progress not version freezing stuff...
one or more venerable projects have died that way

I'm hoping that the same doesn't happen to Tango Studio
I'm not sure what their plans are for upgrading to 12.04
(and their forums are all in French...)

good night all

@adempewolff that i can read/understand if you need help
^--- just saying

1:34 AM
I despise things that require app-access
shotwell connect is practically the only external app I use

i use the vanilla screenshot app and gimp ninjitsu as required...

@aking1012 thanks for the offer! I haven't had any problems yet, it just makes it inconvenient to keep up on what the plans are for the distro

@adempewolff i'm just saying, if you want something more "human" than google translate...i placed in to french four on entry to college the first time

@LnxSlck good night :)

@LnxSlck nite

1:37 AM
@aking1012 cool, I'll know who to ask next time I need help reading something there. thanks!

toots his own brain horn for a moment and np

I took 5-6 years of friend in primary/middle school but was horrible at it
of french*

def...that's why i didn't say how many years i took...i said where i placed based on those years

Anyone able to help out with a USB Install before you try question?

@Trax what's the problem?

1:39 AM
@Trax just dump the question, the help will come or it won't

When I come to the GNU Grub and select Try Ubuntu without installing my laptops screen just goes black and my fans go really noisy.

kneejerk is buggy acpi

buggy acpi huh hmm

it's not definitive at all, but fans + black screen say that to me.

Okay guess I wont be able to run Ubuntu on a usb stick then :P gotta go Wubi

1:43 AM
i'm an always install grub on /dev/sda type of fellow myself. wubi is great if you've never ever used linux before....but it's generally a bad idea to use

Why is it a bad idea other than you are using a crappy NTFS

resizing partitions and grub info based on offset. i think grub has a lot more practice chainloading than the NT loader. and several other reasons
@Trax btw thanks for asking instead of flaming...it belies intelligence

Oh noooo thank you for responding without belittling me

the default live USB creater is junk. I always forget this and waste a good 30 minutes before giving up and downloading unetbootin

that's a fair point...but i think it's something they're working on an ubuntu respin of or some such. i still say universal is mo' bettah' than some proprietary solution... then i am relatively poor and people that make these decisions are relatively well to do...so...

1:51 AM
I feel like it doesn't even work correctly for creating Ubuntu live USBs half the time though

I would tend to agree...but I'm just me.

@jrg do you know where the badge progress for edits is now that the review is diffrent?

Well, doing so on my laptop I find it crashes and restarts installs and is just corrupt.

basically the point of this rant is that I need to post a sticky note over my desk reminding myself to just not use it

@Trax what usb creator are you using...
if it's not unetbootin, give it a shot

1:54 AM
The suggested one on Ubuntu's website

and get updates for it.

universal usb installer
unetbootin hmm

...

Pen Drive Linux
its on Ubuntu'

@Trax see we're at this impasse where there's recommended policy and my policy...and i can't TELL you to do something counter to policy, but I can tell you I've had unetbootin work a lot more often...and no canonical doesn't sign my paychecks

okay

Until usb's have virtualizing technology, it is all just hit and miss

@mateo_salta that's fair-ish. i've has specific drives succeed with unet and not with recommended though
tbh i usually recommend the party line like:
0
A: which nvidia driver from additional drivers option should i choose ...?

aking1012[recommended] is recommended Generally, recommended is the best course of action. If you have a specific bug, file a bug. [recommended] is targeted to work for the largest number of users with recent hardware. It may or may not work for this problem. I post it as an answer in hopes th...

and then the next release doesn't, then you want to use a windows disk, there are specific workarounds for other disks.... ect.

1:59 AM
Hmm I wonder if I am suppose to run these as Run as Administrator for Windows 7

@Trax yes you are.

Recomended: buy a cd drive

lol figured

writing to drives raw admin is required

I generally only install from USB if the image is too big to fit on a CD-R

2:01 AM
giving Unetbootin a try now

(too cheap to buy DVD-Rs :P)

@Trax good i hope it works

Me to
< such a newb

@adempewolff i only burn optical discs if i'm on a platform with a built-in optical reader...
Netbook WHAT?????

@aking1012 yeah I don't own any netbooks
if I change the update server in a live session will it use that server for downloading updates when it installs?

2:03 AM
they have portable optical drives for about $25-30

3 PCs. Netbook, testing; Desktop, beast; Laptop, normal. Just saying...they all run linux primary
@mateo_salta i used to think that but some BIOS don't boot properly from USB optical

maybe they do, but we are talking about a "netbook" and not an old "IBM"

@adempewolff depends on how you do it
@mateo_salta acer aspire a150

I used to have a motherboard that did not have usb, just saying...

having usb != booting properly from usb optical

2:06 AM
no, but a netbook without a drive, that only has usb, not being designed to use a external optical?

i think it's a fail on behalf of the external optical drive personally, but BIOS fail is more common

I would try an external HDD in that case, installed with grub to loopback an iso.
anyways....

i want to believe loopback isos work, but the more i read... the more i hear they don't
yes...anyway

I got a few working... one of the few questions I have is about that.
basically what the usb loaders are doing automatically

I think I'm trying to like sushi again tomorrow...

2:12 AM
well, later I'm heading out.

yes, i just changed the topic on purpose

mmm, I like the egg ones, not really sushi, but those are good

@mateo_salta later on man. have a better one

later @aking1012

2:34 AM
and who is Andrew King?

Its not working. Blasted. lol I wanted to try it before deciding if I should wipe my laptop.
Unetbootin keeps crashing

2:47 AM

@Mahesh what's with the new review?
you're still here @RolandTaylor?

Ajoy! pals...

i thought all were dead...

lol, not me

that's fine

4:51 AM
@msPeachy back
@blackedx hey

@RolandTaylor thanks, what's with the new review? Does that mean I can't review till I get 2K?

@msPeachy we need to get you lots of rep fast cause it's awesome
It's just a new version of the old tools
I can't remember when you get access
but when you do, you'll love it

Yes, I'm on it. Can't click on the beta, I'm on the old

enjoying different linux flavors huh?

Oh btw, if you need more rep you can edit tag wikis
(not that you do it only for the rep of course ;D)

4:54 AM
Don't know what tag wikis are

- each tag has a wiki attached to it (what you see when you put the mouse over the tag)
So if you click on "help us edit this wiki" (or something like that) it takes you to the tag wiki where you can edit it
The ones that need editing are the ones that are blank or not adequate

Oh okay, will try if I know about that tag

that was an example
I'll see if I can find some for you

lol, you don't have to, I'll find one. I'm on the Tags tab now

that's usually the place I look lol

4:56 AM
why so few persons here?

@blackedx it's night time for the majority of us
actually it's morning (12:57) for me

22:57 pm here... XD

@RolandTaylor I moved to the last page, there are empty ones
where are you @blackedx?

@msPeachy San Salvador, El Salvador. Central America
