@Amith KK, :3344016: I need a pc for development purposes where I can run aptana or netbeans with debugging enabled for php and java, mysql and mysql workbench, apache, php, java, and android development. The PC needs to be compatible with Ubuntu and have at least 2 monitors, but ideally 4 monitors, while keeping the price as low as possible.

@OctavianDamiean IIRC since around 5.04 or 5.10. You?
had look up the release history to check about when I installed for the first time

Oh nice! Since 7.10.

I have never been involved in any development or community work except this
though I have submitted a bug or two
before Ubuntu I used Gentoo a bit

What is the recommended spec as in a spec which can run Ubuntu Unity3D responsively. All the recommended specs I find on the internet talk about the absolute minimum recommended spec.

11:12 AM
wow, so you're a long time Linux user.
@oshirowanen Generally speaking you should look for a NVIDIA graphic card.

@oshirowanen and by Nvidia @OctavianDamiean means AMD

My NVIDIA 9800 GTX+ performed perfectly fine.
No, not really. Not at all.

I have used it for a while. But mostly as an end user for everyday tasks. I have never been that involved in programming. Seems I know less of the system than many people here!

I would never recommend an AMD card.

@OctavianDamiean So 2 NVIDIA cards to give 4 screens?

11:15 AM
@OctavianDamiean why?

@oshirowanen That is correct but I should tell you that I have no experience with SLI on Ubuntu. So I'm not sure how it will work out.
@BrunoPereira Because of the problems I had with ATI in the past. It might be better now but I can't tell since I have no personal experience with AMD since then.

@OctavianDamiean Ever head or read anyone who has been able to get 4 screens to work with ubuntu, does not have to be in sli mode.

I'm only recommending hardware I have personal experience with.

@OctavianDamiean That's fine.
Just want to get a rough idea.
How about a CPU, what would be a good low cost CPU which can handle Unity3D responsively?
Responsivlely as in any action which takes more than a second is not responsive.

It is definitely possible. Look here, however like I said, I have never tried SLI on Ubuntu.
@oshirowanen I guess an Intel i3 sould be fine.
My Centrino Duo handles Unity3D with ease. :)

11:19 AM
@OctavianDamiean Totally understand.
@OctavianDamiean At the moment, I have a P4 3GHz and it struggles.

Mhmm, is it a single core?

@OctavianDamiean Fair enough. I can say that the drivers are quite stable at the moment, but then again that will end up to be a preference thing ofc.

@OctavianDamiean So with 2 NVidia cards, 4 monitors, what kind of PSU should I be looking at?

I was not trying to say that AMD is bad, just to get that right. :)

@OctavianDamiean Yes, P4 3GHz single core, no hyperthreading either.

11:21 AM
That is a good question, the PSU is going to be important, especially for a SLI setup.

@OctavianDamiean I was thinking maybe a 650watt PSU, but not sure if that will be enough, or if that will be excessive.

@oshirowanen That might be the reason.
I'm not comfortable enough to say it would be enough or not due to my lack of experience with SLI but I know that this topic should be covered on Tom's Hardware. Let me try to find that.

@OctavianDamiean Thanks. wondering of tomshardware have a forum... checking.

Yup, they to.
Man the latest update broke Flash for me on Chromium. :/

@OctavianDamiean Only problem is, they probably won't know much about hardware compatibly with ubuntu.
Thanks for the help, going for lunch.

11:29 AM
Not sure but I didn't mean to direct you there to ask about SLI on Ubuntu but about SLI power consumption. ;)
This might be interesting.

Octavian, xdotool doesn't read tab. How do you tell it that you meant the Tab key?

I'm investigating. Actually I'll be investigating after I'm back from the doctor.

I tried changing window switcher to something else and parsing it into xdotool triggers the switcher.

Q: Recommended computer spec for development purposes

oshirowanenAccording to the FAQ, I can't ask for shopping advice, but it says nothing about asking for computer spec recommendations, so I am assuming that is allowed. If such questions are not allowed, please let me know where in stackexchange I can ask such a question. The question is: I'm looking to b...

1:07 PM
@JorgeCastro so you're still having $PATH problems with rvm.... :S

/me Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!
If I haven't setup a SSH server at home... is it still possible to remote in so I can push all the work I did from home last night (which I forgot to push :<)

jrg
Lets see how well the Business Desktop Remix runs in Vbox.

so that is a no not possible

jrg
@rlemon no ssh server, no rdp, no nothing like that, no way.

whatever comes pre-installed in 11.10
fresh installed it like a week ago and never got around to setting anything up
painting my apartment... so been kinda lazy with everything else.

jrg
1:19 PM
yeah, no way. sorry. :(

how do I install unity 3d?

@oshirowanen 4.1gh processor, 8gb ram, ssd (vertex 3 is good), and big ass hdd. I suggest dual monitor.. both widescreen, one landscape one portrait (output screen, and code screen)

Pft? I cannot vote in the election.

jrg
@Alvar It should be pre-installed.

'Ello, BTW.

jrg
1:20 PM
@Gigili hello hello! :)

@jrg I can only find ubuntu and unbuntu 2d in the log in screen
@jrg btw, what's the package called?

ubuntu is 3d is it not
ubuntu [3d], ubuntu 2d

Ubuntu 3d is just Ubuntu

jrg
@Alvar its just called ubuntu.

Ubuntu 3D

1:22 PM
I just had a huge aha moment, when I realized how the unty launcher works in that you can add remove the apps. :)
@jrg aha
@jrg brb

ubuntu 3d?

jrg
@rlemon lol

ok well time to go for a smoke... god I can't believe I didn't push that commit.

@jokerdino it looks the same -.-

like an hour and a half wasted. (3 hours of work == hour and a half to remember / re implement all changes)

Q: Am I using Unity or Unity 2D?

htorqueUnity and Unity 2D look very much alike in Ubuntu 11.10, so how can new users easily find out whether they are running Unity or Unity 2D?

2

jrg
@Alvar thats good. because its almost impossible to tell the difference anyway.

transparency
and dash looks completely different.

@jrg then what's the point? O.o

Unity has more gimmicks :D

why not jsut have unity instead of two, that's confusing...

1:26 PM
Unity 2d is less of a resource hog.

jrg
@Alvar That is the point. Unified user experience, and not everyone can run Unity [3D].

I actually kind of like unity now, that might be because the other options are so very ugly...
@jrg lol it's not really 3d...

I have always liked Unity, that might be because the only other distro I've used is SUSE, (and never used a different DE than what was shipped)

jrg
@Alvar Explain that reasoning please?
because it uses compiz, it is 3D.

I forgot my glasses, today it's only 2D

1:27 PM
@jrg it looks the same flat thing as it always has been, in what way is it 3d that I an see (by using it) ???

jrg
@Alvar you're missing the point....

@jrg well If I call a program 3d doesn't make it 3d!

jrg
its not 3D as in a 3D movie.

@jrg what point? it's not 3d..
@jrg what is it then?

@Alvar are these shapes 3D or 2D

1:28 PM
the "dash" is till as flat as ever, the mac dash is more 3d than this...

jrg
its 3D as in it uses more graphics power, it has a better/slicker look, and it uses compiz.

@rlemon 2d...

jrg
@Alvar did you even read this answer? - askubuntu.com/questions/62001/am-i-using-unity-or-unity-2d

but they represent 3D objects... 3D design is not actually 3D but looks like and represents 3D shapes.
2

@jrg woooow, my old 11.04 classic gnome used compiz, still it wasn't 3d..

jrg
1:29 PM
What rlemon said.

@jrg what answer? it's a question!

jrg
@Alvar Sorry, copied the wrong link. Scroll down a little bit and you'll see what I mean.

@rlemon so 3d isn't really 3d, it's 3d if you imagine it.... GAH what fakes this is...

jrg
Unity "3D"
Unity "2D"
You can also see a shadow below the menubar in the top screenshot.

@jrg so rounded edges is 3d....
@jrg shadows did I have in 11.04 classic on the windows...

jrg
1:32 PM
@Alvar thats because you were running compiz.

@Alvar 3D tv (as it is seen today) is not 3D then either.. until we get holograms like R2D2 spits out his chest no 'display' will enter the realm of 3D as it is still a 2D image tricking our minds into perceiving it is 3D (however good that perception may be)

jrg
ok, please shush for a few minutes while I explain.

so compiz is 3d?! lol :P

jrg
Unity "3D" is a few things - first, it uses compiz, which is fairly eyecandy-friendly window manager.
second, because of compiz, it has the ability to do some things like window snapping, shadows etc

ok

1:34 PM
@Alvar your monitor itself is 3D, everything that you see on it is 2D. To not be that guy, you can accept that a representation of a 3D image in computing is coined as being 3D itself... even though in reality we know it does not exist in three dimensions.

On an absolutely unrelated note, I have uploaded the latest GTG version in my PPA :)

jrg
So in this case, the "3D" part of Unity "3D" isn't "3D" as in a 3D movie that pops out at you and stuff, but is more along the lines of "Oh, your graphics card can run this, so we'll give you a few nicer tweaks, shadows gradients etc"
@jokerdino sweet, updating
Now for Unity "2D".
Unity "2D" uses QT and metacity instead of compiz (I think its metacity)
because it uses QT, it doesn't use as much cpu, ram etc

yeah it is metacity
but, if you want, you can use compiz to handle unity 2d.

jrg
and because it uses metacity, it doesn't use as much cpu, ram etc - but, at the expense of things like shadows, gradients and things like that.
@jokerdino thats besides the point, I got awesomeWM to handle unity 2D. granted, didn't work so well, but I did it. :P

haha yeah :p
If I cant convince someone, I confuse them :D

jrg
1:37 PM
And that, is the difference.
so to sum it up - Unity "3D" isn't "3D" per se, but it is prettier and has more eyecandy. Unity "2D" is a slimmed down, not so eyecandy filled version designed to run on slower hardware.
@JorgeCastro any idea when the business remix will get a amd64 build, and if so, will it cost lots 'o money?
user image
3

LOL

@rlemon true, bu too call it 3d for using compiz is just stupid...

jrg
@JorgeCastro :D

it's /awesome/
no apache or nginx
amazon just serves it for me

jrg
1:48 PM
Compiz is an OpenGL compositing manager @Alvar - OpenGL Alvar, OpenGL. OpenGL is 3D. ish.
@JorgeCastro Anything special you did?

@JorgeCastro sexy, all deployed with juju?

about 5 minutes worth of config ^

jrg
because last I checked, s3 didn't have rsync.

@BrunoPereira no, it doesn't really work like that
@jrg in the rakefile you can say "s3"

jrg
Ok, so I can't charm it. :(

1:49 PM
im reading it

well, you can charm it

jrg
@JorgeCastro oh. never read that part. :P

but you wouldn't run it on the cloud, you run the results in the cloud

@jrg loool -- that 3 o's now that's 3d!

Pfft!

1:49 PM
I mean, I guess it can be charmed, if anything to make the ruby part easy

I hate it when a "Free Account" requires a credit card to register.

2 hours messing with ruby, 30 minutes actually messing with the blog, hah

@rlemon its just in case you press the wrong service button so they can bill you ;)

jrg
I'm not sure what you did, because I've never spent that long doing that. :P

but its free!

1:50 PM
Yea, i'll stay away from the aws... still need a good host.
or possibly just a free fast dbserver.

@jrg it's mixing up packaged ruby stuff that i had on my machines and the rvm stuff
which I never got working

apparently all of ipages problems are their shotty mysql servers

but rbenv worked the first time, so I'm not complaining

jrg
@JorgeCastro ah, i see.

yeah so step two will be connecting it to cloudfront
I did the math, it will cost me like $3 a month to run the blog like this

1:52 PM
Hello.

jrg
Or you could do it on heroku via git and it'll cost you nothing?

Oh the new sound setting has landed in precise.

@jrg all my backups are complete (yes it takes days with me), time to move forwards! Wish me luck :)

jrg
@BrunoPereira wishing you luck! :)

1:57 PM
how do I change the theme in Unity?
this is unity "3d"

jrg
you installed gnome tweak tool right?

@jrg yeah

jrg
open that up and you have some options

how do I change the keyboard shortcuts?
@jrg in apperance I can only find like 5 themes...

@Alvar Y U NO search in Ask Ubuntu?

1:59 PM
@jokerdino you know, the search function is broken...

jrg
changing keyboard shortcuts are via ccsm, but I really don't recommend you do that because CSSM is a loaded shotgun pointed at your head with a shaky finger on the trigger.
@Alvar thats all you've got installed right now then, anything else will need to be installed by you.

@Alvar You can use the google search..

@jrg whaaat? I need to have terminal on f4 and not ctrl + alt + t ..

with site:askubuntu.com in front.

@jokerdino too much work you know...

2:01 PM
LOOOOOL
Anyway, what theme you want to change?

@jokerdino ambiance
to another, I've imported it via wget

Change to ambiance or from ambiance?

from ambiance to elementary graphite

jrg
ccsm > commands > command line 0 = gnome-terminal set your keyboard shortcut

Why not suggest keyboard shortcuts from system settings?

2:02 PM
@jokerdino it's not there...
screenshot brb

Ambiance is window theme or gtk theme?

jrg
except that will interfere with your close window plugin, so whatever you do from here on out is your own responsibility, you can and probably will break everything.

@jokerdino window I think

2:04 PM
@alvar there is a keyboard thing under hardware

is my system settings correct?

click on it

@jokerdino not the same
@jokerdino doesn't help already been there..

jrg
@jokerdino you're running 12.04, 11.10 doesn't have that iirc

@jrg not have what?

2:05 PM
@jokerdino there's just that I have a swedish layout, that's it..

I did have a bunch of errors and might need your help for something

I am pretty sure there is a shortcut in keyboard...

converting from tumblr -> markdown failed

@jokerdino NO THERE'S NOT i'VE JSUT CHECKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@alvar, this answer from me shows there was a keyboard shortcut option in 11.10

2:07 PM
@OctavianDamiean Still investigating? I have a question if you have a minute.

@jokerdino you idiot! that's compiz settings and not system settings!

Scroll down to the second part.

jrg
@Alvar Calm down.
You're supposed to abide by the Ubuntu code of conduct while using this site, and it says in black and white be considerate, be respectful - and you're being anything but that to @jokerdino.

Bah. :/

jrg
So please, be respectful. Everyone in the chatroom and the greater community will appreciate it, and we might be able to help you more. :)

2:12 PM
...

@alvar I think you are opening keyboard layout. I am not referring to that.
look under hardware, there is this option of the name 'Keyboard'.

System Settings > Keyboard > keyboard Shortcuts

@BrunoPereira aaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaa :D

Dude! :D

wuut, did I miss read what you where looking for?

2:19 PM
that's perfect! :D

@Gigili Shoot.

I got no privacy option in my control-center. Boo

@jokerdino there was a question on the site about it, maybe a bug was already issued, have a look

@BrunoPereira and I voted to close it :D
no bug about it yet.

jrg
link me?

2:27 PM
Just for the record, I can already invoke the tab key and it already worked. I just have to find out how to direct all the actions to Unity.

Q: No privacy control in system settings?

user45651 Possible Duplicate: There's an issue with an Alpha/Beta Release of Ubuntu, what should I do? I am using Ubuntu 12.04, and upgraded all packages to the last version. But I don't see any options for "privacy" in the Ubuntu system settings.

oh i thought it was still open.

Closed! Boooooooooooo! Those guys are sutch retards!

i thought so too. but it seems to be closed.
@jrg you have privacy in your system settings?

jrg
nope
then again, i haven't updated in a little bit.

2:32 PM
I only saw it in the OMG article. no where else.

I think it shows if you install the Zeitgeist Global Privacy tool only

jrg
i don't see any zeitgeist global privacy packages
results for "zeitgeist*' = zeitgeist zeitgeist-datahub zeitgeist-fts-extension
zeitgeist-core zeitgeist-extension-fts

jrg
@NN and I thought I was nutes about answer rates. ;) (nice work on meta BTW!)

found it

Panagiotis KI have installed ubuntu 11 yesterday and I have to say, i am totally impressed! After using Windows for almost 15 years... So, I have a few questions... I have been playing around with different desktops, unity, unity-2d, gnome2 and gnome3, kubuntu etc. I want to remove all and keep unity and ...

Can we NARQ it?

jrg
Yes.

2:48 PM
CSS freaks... jsfiddle.net/rlemon/YF4nS <- how do I make it so the container does not shift when a scrollbar is introduced (aside from forcing scrollbars)

Oli
@rlemon Not easily. body's dimensions change when the scroller pops up, so it is forced to recentre. The way I used to fix this a decade ago was by forcing the scrollbar all the time in IE but I've learned to live with it now.
You can still do this. You do something silly like set body {height:101%} IIRC

Oli
@rlemon Or if you want to get really douchey about it, you can set up a fixed container that is 100% of the screen that hides its browser-given scroller and replaces it with a pop-over scroller but that leaves you responsible to fix a whole swathe of built-in functionality (like wheel and wheel-click scrolling)

Q: install firefox in ubuntu-server edition

Vaibhav MishraI have ubuntu server edition installed and I want to install firefox inside it , I don't want full ubuntu-desktop package just a minimal setup which would let me run firefox inside ubuntu-server 10.04 LTS

Oli
But my main recommendation is to live with it. Failing that keep the scrollbar up all the time.

2:53 PM
@Oli i'm considering overflow-y: scroll
