Q: Highest voted answer auto-accepted after length of time

WilliamI have a suggestion: After a certain set amount of time automatically mark the question with the most upvotes as the accepted answer. Many of us have experienced this: You answer a question posted by someone with 1 reputation. They leave a comment thanking you for solving their problem. You respo...

Yea, no.

I'm afraid I have to disagree on that one.

It was proposed multiple times on Meta.SO already.

@OctavianDamiean Yeah, that's true.

1:09 AM
@RolandTaylor: Once my StackAd WordPress plugin is approved, we can use it instead of the nasty hacks I made to our current theme.

1:51 AM
you're working on an affiliate plugin for stack ads? very nice.
Thats the kind of stuff I work on all day :D
only i bet the stack API for that is cleaner than what you see on advertising.com, doubleclick, and etc.

2:02 AM
Some interesting Q&A in the town hall chat as well.

hmm
I should put the SE ads on my blog

Still not sure who I'm going to vote for

but I just discovered octopress and now want to redo my blog

my host is terribly slow.... :< sad panda
1 year subscription with a slow host.... what do i do with it... what do i do...

2:17 AM
The saddest of all sad pandas.

Whhhaaattt? octopress? time to google.
o neat!
I'm sold on the title
" a framework for hackers" mmhmm. and it bet it stays crunchy in milk

yeah
I totally fell for it too
and here I am installing ruby like a chump

naw, ruby isnt for chumps, its for enthusiasts.
I stopped falling for the "You program in xyz? pfftttt" i mean, it cant be as bad as assembler. And truth be told, i envy those peeps. Thats heady stuff to know.

Ruby is for apes.

The fact i work in several flavors of web frameworks makes me lucrative :D And i like thinking people want me. I'm narcissistic like that

2:22 AM
I can't hear you over the sound of the 50 ways to install ruby things
do I want rvm or the other other one?

i personally use rvm
but i dont know how goodt hat is for a production environment. I dont run anything serious on ruby other than chef

rbenv <3
rbenv is like rvm, only it doesn't clobber things

and he's a pet project right now -- since i'm too lame to try and translate juju/charms on winders
owait, rvm with no clobber mode?
<3 marco for being a pioneer

I just like how easy it was to setup and manage
Also, the lack of clobbering

@JorgeCastro Oh dude, you're installing ruby?! Now I know the world is going to end.

yeah, as soon as I figure out rvm

jrg
Need help?
i <3 rvm

question regarding tag synonyms. if you have [correct-tag] and [duplicate-tag], which tag page do you go to for suggesting a synonym?

I just need to install ruby 1.9.2

jrg
wget --no-check-certificate https://raw.github.com/joshfng/railsready/master/railsready.sh && bash railsready.sh && alert
select rvm when asked, and then sit back and relax. Enjoy.
instant ruby (tested on 12.04)

2:42 AM
ah awesome
I want to try this octopress thing

jrg
Octopress? Its awesome, made me enjoy blogging again - its got markdown <3 all over it.

ok so this install's rvm
and then I use that to install ruby?
rvm install 1.9.2 && rvm use 1.9.2
right?

jrg
this installs rvm and 1.9.3, which works the same way as 1.9.2 does as far as octopress is concerned.

Q: Back button (or similar) and breadcrumbs, or just breadcrumbs

rlemonShould a website that keeps track of 'Breadcrumbs'hierarchical link system need to provide a back button, or similar means of returning to the parent page on each 'subpage'. To give a visual example: Here is my main page Navigate to a subpage should the above page "Change Username", from...

jrg
2:46 AM
use 1.9.3 for everything that uses Rack (which octopress uses) because the speed/performance increases are tremendous, and the few things that 1.9.3 broke compared to 1.9.2 are simple enough to fix (but nobody uses them anyway so its all good)

navigation woes

does anyone do hosted octopress?

jrg
Define "hosted" please?

"can I use octopress without having to care about ruby?"

jrg
no.
because of how octopress works.
so i installed it, and now I write myself a new blog post.

2:49 AM
k
I'll mess with it locally
you should charm this yo.

jrg
then, I run rake preview and open up localhost:4000 and make sure my post works right, then I do a rake generate and then I have a whole bunch of static files in $octopress/public/ (iirc the layout). Then I can take those and serve them anywhere I want - and I mean anywhere, since its just HTML.

ah right, so I can basically do that locally
and then just rsync the static files

jrg
Yes
Any sort of charm I'd do for this would be a apache/nginx charm. Not even a proper LAMP stack. :P

heh
I like that there's a tumblr importer

@jrg blog those instructions dude
thats handy info to have
brb

jrg
2:51 AM
OH and it has tag RSS feeds.
@lazyPower Its in the official octopress docs. ;)

then blog a link to it? (trying really hard to save face here)

the octo rvm install docs are different that yours
I couldn't get them to work

jrg
any errors?
and you did reload/open a new shell, right?
Oh, i think this is where you had problems: echo '[[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && . "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" # Load RVM function' >> ~/.bash_profile
it should be echo '[[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && . "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" # Load RVM function' >> ~/.bashrc instead.

A: Problem installing ruby and gems

jrgYou have two options. You can use a script that will do this for you, or you can follow the guide manually - they'll both have the same results, and they'll both do the same thing, the only difference is that the script won't require you to copy/paste anything after you select the method of inst...

aha!
he did write it down

jrg
Oh, yes, that one.
/me needs to go update his answer later. :P
I wonder if I could somehow make that "the canonical GIMME A RUBY NAOW" question....

2:56 AM
indeed
ok
I restarted a terminal
and which ruby still returns the packaged version of /usr/bin/ruby

hi5 JRG
Way to be ahead of the ruby noob curve

ah ok, I got it

jrg
@JorgeCastro echo $PATH ?

I figured it out

jrg
oh cool. what was it?

2:58 AM
I had the system path ahead of the home installed one

jrg
that'd do it.
works now?

yeah
ERROR: Gem bundler is not installed, run gem install bundler first.
I did that and bundler installed fine
I don't need to sudo these do I?

@GeorgeEdison oh nice!
@jrg are you... trying to convert Jorge into a Ruby user?!?!?!?!
This,
This is heresy!

jrg
Sudo'ing them screws up a lot of things if you do it repeatedly.

I didn't sudo anything
seems that bundle install isn't working tho

jrg
3:07 AM
@jorge which bundler should return $HOME/.rvm/morestuff

bundler doesn't, bundle does
/home/jorge/.rvm/bin/bundle

jrg
Oh bundle. Stupid me.
bundle install should work.

ERROR: Gem bundler is not installed, run gem install bundler first.
:-/

jrg
Hmm… this is baffling. :\
I can't replicate it here.

Hello all!

3:11 AM
lul ruby

Usually the room is dead at this time.

@MarcoCeppi :)

heh
@MarcoCeppi "it's like this every day"
hmm, google says try blowing away the .lock file

jrg
@Marco write a better Wordpress that's more like octopress and people won't need ruby ;)

3:13 AM

I got real negative feedback when I said we should have an answer auto-accepted after a certain amount of time. Can someone please explain thier reasoning for being against it?

@William that's a big no.

(It's a bad idea in practice)

jrg
@jorge delete/rename Gemfile.lock

3:13 AM
because...

that look ok jrg?

Its not up to the "system" its up to the asker to define the right answer

@jrg yeah tried that, no luck

the community can pick an answer out of the list with votes - but again the decision lies in teh hands of the asker for the acceptance badge on the question.

jrg
Your gem env looks great.

3:14 AM
Yes, but what if a user doent know?

@William if you suggest that we convert abandoned questions into community wikis then I'd probably support that.

what would that do?

bbl :P

jrg
Yeah, @roland what's that do?

@jrg ok going to try it on my desktop just to rule out laptop specific stupidity when I was trying other ruby things

3:15 AM
How can a user "not know"? They are looking for an answer and one answer is sure to fit the bill better than the others. I usually upvote questions that support the best practice solution.
but award checks to the answer that wholly answers the question in the context that i phrase it

I Yes, but users with 1 rep dont know how to answerds?

they usually get a popup
"remember you can accept an answer by clicking the check mark!" or something like that

But after they get their answer they dont check au again

jrg
@Jorge oh, if you tried rbenv then that will interfere, but I don't remember you mentioning that.

they leave a comment saying thanks
but thats it

jrg
3:18 AM
@William then the community up votes it once and the system says "it's answered".

@jrg I was but before you joined
trying on my desktop now

Yes, but youre still cheating the answerer out of 15 rep
and i know thats not much but it adds up

you seem to think that rep means something

jrg
@William so? Rep is just numbers. What matters is getting an answer.

I do

3:20 AM
if you're answering questions for points then you're probably thinking about it the wrong way

I know
and Im not
but it does get you priveleges

if you concentrate on giving better answers you'll always get rep

jrg
@jorge ah, ok. That'd do it. I've gotta go now, but I'll be around tomorrow so if you want to have a list of questions for me then, feel free. :)

um... that could be interpreted many different ways but ok

@jrg I should be set now I think
@William if you write let's say an awesome answer
and you get 10 upvotes
that's 100 points

3:22 AM
Yes,

when I try to answer a question I try to make each answer worthy to be upvoted 10 times
it takes me a very long time to write answers

I had a 10 paragraph long answer - and then my battery died.

jrg
@William if you give good, quality answers you get rep. Example: I've adopted the ruby tag - almost all my answers consist of a link to one of my answers, plus a few relevant pieces of info. I try to make a general answer, but also give it the caring hand/touch for that situation.

the site saves your partial posts.

Yes, but only if youre on a good browser.

jrg
3:25 AM
Please tell me you weren't using IE*.

@William you're using firefox or chrome arent you?

@jrg I agree that focusing on writing good answers is a good idea. But especially for relatively new users like me, reputation is like currency. It frees you from the privelige restrictions.
@jrg, No, I was using Internet Exploder.

Theres a reason it takes a while to get tools and have restrictions lifted.

BOOM!

the reason it's restricted is so that you understand how the site works before you use it
3
you don't get the BFG on the first level of Doom either.

3:26 AM
+1

yes.

@jrg One project at a time :)

but still I wouldnt turn my nose up at 15 rep any day.

jrg
@William relax. I remember being impatent like you. I just wish I had someone who bothered to explain how the site works to me. :p
2
@Marco heh. ;D

I am so impatient.
It has been stared so everyone can see what a mean person @jrg is

jrg
3:27 AM
@Marco remembers that little impulsive LEMME FILL THE EDIT LIST WITH TAG WIKIS BEFORE 9AM ON A SATURDAY!! Kid. :p

it's ok, earning reputation is easy, getting rid of it is hard.
I am at -278!

!

jrg
@Jorge you just cheat and give it all away to less fortunate people. :D

Do you suffer from reputation attrition? Let our bounty system help you with that.

@lazyPower that's what I've been doing
but I hit the limits all the time
like if I want to reward a great answer I still get stuck waiting 24 hours

3:29 AM
Oh i know this - i keep a fairly active eye on the front page

108 Offered bounties for 14,350 reputation
6

I can tell when you have restrictions lifted, your fingerprints show up all over the reputation system

jrg
Dude. Gimme some of that rep o_O

I would like a bounty.
Rep is tasty.

@lazyPower if it did I would almost lose it all

3:30 AM
haha
half of the fun would be getting it back to watch it roll back - like driving your dodge to 999999 and watching it reset to 0 -- blatant 90's sitcom reference

jrg
Oh crud, imagine having to approve edits from Jorge… that'd be a never-ending job right there. ;)

@William add screenshots to your posts, that's an easy way to make a good answer

A: Reinstate System Menu after reverting to Gnome Classic?

WilliamSorry, the system menu cannot be brought back. You can get the shortcuts by enabling the "Other" menu. See http://ubuntugenius.wordpress.com/2011/10/17/ubuntu-11-10-upgrade-missing-your-system-menu-preferences-administration-launchers/ .

OK, thanks for the tip.

you link to some random person's blog
what happens in 6 months when that blog is wrong?
your answer will be wrong, and you'll start getting downvotes

3:32 AM
Take the snippits of text you want out - cite your source, and if it can be explained with pictures start dropping those in

Problem is that it's hard to get screenshots when 'm not on Ubuntu.

no big deal
you can always edit your post

@William i'm sorry i'm viewing this in IE so all i got was:

next time you're on ubuntu you can take the screenshots there

its amusing - i'm STILL getting votes from askubuntu.com/questions/16178/why-is-it-bad-to-run-as-root/…
thats the only solid authoritative answer i've ever posted in my life.

jrg
3:34 AM
Also, @William - if you really want, drop a link in the chat room asking for some screenshots - I've normally got time to do a few, I know some others that do as well. It's a community of many, not one. :)
ok now i'm gone

Ok, thanks.
G0 Ubunticorns!

be thankful
adding screenshots is way easier than installing ruby

I am thankful.

grrr, same gem error

The whole monkeys + obelisk thing still cracks me up -- my boss made a direct reference to that today when i explained to him how this client home-roll CMS works.
he said, and i quote "Do we all feel like the monkeys and the obelisk or what?" my rebuttal "Pretty much..." he responds "good, you've learned what NOT to do - lets not repeat other peoples mistakes" -- last sentence paraphrased.

you mean Monolith

it contained expletives and a humorous reference to someones mom

@AmithKK I don't know why you think that this is funny. Not at all. May I remind you of this?
in Ask Ubuntu Town Hall Chat, 2 days ago, by Amith KK
@TheX I don't do much animal cruelty.. I have this friend who made the unicorn starring script, and I love cats and kittens. Animal cruelty is a NoNo
This was your answer to:

@OctavianDamiean Uhh.. thats not funny

in Ask Ubuntu Town Hall Chat, 2 days ago, by TheX
Candidates as valued members of our community and our lives, many of us worship cats and other small furry creatures... What is your stand in regards on animal cruelty and the treatment of said animals?

Its Informative

A cat on a subwoofer is informative in what way?
3

How is blowing up Ipod speakers animal cruelty?
I skipped that video
Wait.. Im on a droid and the images are switched off

9:27 AM
Right, then you should post the correct video link.

Wait a sec..

That particular video I'm referring to is about some moron thinking that it is funny to put a kitten on a subwoofer while playing some music. It is absolutely not funny for the kitten.

@BrunoPereira Hey \o/
@OctavianDamiean Yes.....

9:56 AM
Mhmm, sounds interesting but as an optional installable kit.

Or before one does so ;)

What do you mean? Before installing?

yeah, why not. graphics would be a bit tricky but most of the other components can be checked before installing

like windows 7's Power rank?

Well I'm not sure, I mean HDD for sure, that'll work but the problem is that on a live system you already consume a lot of RAM for the system.
Oh you mean in Ubiquity?

10:00 AM
@OctavianDamiean Or, Just perform the test's before loading up the GUI

@OctavianDamiean yeah

@AmithKK The problem with that approach is that you force the user to wait and stare at something he shouldn't have to stare at.
@BrunoPereira That might actually work. Not sure how much RAM Ubiquity needs but I assume it is not really that much.
That is actually an interesting thing to find out.

Like that?

@OctavianDamiean at least how fast the RAM is and how much that is would not be hard to check. Same for hard disk performance

@AmithKK Yes, exactly. A big big UX nogo.
@BrunoPereira Yup the hard disk is definitely the least problematic part to check.

10:04 AM
@OctavianDamiean Or, Something like "Your systems performance is being checked, the gui will now be terminated... This might take some moments" in Ubiquity

No, it should really stay on Ubiquity and the progress should be presented there.

Or, After install.. do it on the first run?

It should be before install.
No, Ubiquity sounds like the most logical place.

It would be easily implemented in the alternate install...
But with the gui, Your making things hard

10:07 AM
Resources in ram

Right but determining how much RAM the computer has and how fast it is is still possible.
I'm not sure what else would be possibly needed for them RAM check.

@AmithKK if you are already running the installed I fail to see the problem, the installer uses RAM, it does not report the wrong amounts available and the speed of that RAM can still be measured

@OctavianDamiean Oh, That's simple right?
@BrunoPereira I was thinking of actually scanning the ram like memtest86

No, that is not the idea, just a fast amount and speed would do.

If anyone wonders why I have answered old posts on meta it is in an attempt to clean out things that are sorted from meta.askubuntu.com/unanswered. Even if posts are answered (but without one up-vote) or are marked as status-complete or similarly they will not be considered unanswered until they get an answer with one up-vote.

Yup, up-voted them.

@OctavianDamiean Cheers. ~70 unanswered posts at meta might not be that bad for the moment, though we want to easily find unattended posts on meta and we do not want a future where meta is hogged with unanswered posts.

I like how you try to think about the future.

@AmithKK it has this rare and subtle feature of letting every beautifully background color of SX to shine right through it
