8:02 PM
Two minutes after midnight here, see ya.

cya

Good night, morning, afternoon, evening (wherever you are).

Hey guys
Anyone else finding that 11.10 is a heck of a lot less snappy than 11.04?
Unity is just slow sluggish in 11.10... it used to go like a breeze and work extremely fast.
And it's not my computer either...

jrg
How long have you had it installed?

Installed it just yesterday.
Complete reinstall by the way.

jrg
8:07 PM
I had a few buddies who were saying that the install they had from alpha 1 was sluggish.
Ah, ok then that's not the problem. Unity 2D or 3D?

3D, as always.
My computer can definitely support it, I've been using it extremely well in 11.04 no problems.
It's just in 11.10 that everything's been sluggish.

jrg
Define "everything".

Opening and minimizing windows, changing backgrounds, opening programs, etc.
But the slowest is the Dash

jrg
Ah, ok.

jrg you are good at staying a step ahead of me hehe
thanks for clarifying my answer :)
always forget about gksu

8:10 PM
@Icedrake Interesting, have you tried using 2D for comparison?

I haven't actually, I'll try it now.

jrg
I point you to Unity 2D. 3D is now super sluggish for me on 11.10 as well.

Be right back in a few minutes.

@Icedrake: just to know, whats your graphics card?

jrg
@Anna no problem. :)

8:12 PM
Oh wait, how do I switch to Unity 2d in this version?
It's got a different login screen
Can't find the buttons >.<

@Icedrake: cogwheel > select unity2d

jrg
Select ubuntu 2D instead of Ubuntu

@jrg Look at all of them!

jrg
Do we have a "How do I switch to Unity 2D?" question?

Got it

8:14 PM
@Jacob: So there's a folder named 'oneiric' in there?

2D is a bit faster
Just a little bit
Dash is still slow

@Jacob: If IIS isn't finding the folder, it sounds like an IIS problem.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison Heh, I think I actually manually edited those in there instead of installing the entire LXDE, XFCE and gnome-shell stacks. :P

@jrg Ah, I see.
Gnome 3 scales well with older hardware.
I tried it yesterday and was quite impressed.

jrg
@Icedrake Slow dash? Interesting. I'd blame zeitgest.

8:16 PM
Lol, 11.10 hates me. Unity 2D works better than 3D, but neither of them are as nearly as snappy as they used to be in 11.04.
And it was a clean reinstall too, so it's impossible for any problems to have carried over from 11.04.

jrg
Hm. I hadn't noticed it until now, but yeah the dash is slow. :P

@JorgeCastro i'm still looking for a way to actually run that algorithm, to do something like whereis eric - no idea if that's an easy one-liner

Good to know I'm not the only one with a slow dash, lol.

@Icedrake Yeah, I noticed that too.

@GeorgeEdison I Think I'm quitting on the Ubuntu mirror

8:17 PM
That's why I'm using Gnome 3 for now.
@Jacob Really?

@Geo
@GeorgeEdison How does one go about installing Gnome 3?

@Jacob: Hey, some of them are working.

Never done it before, maybe it's time I give it a shot.

jrg
@Icedrake Correction: Gnome-shell - 11.10 uses the gnome3 stack already.

@Icedrake Open a terminal and type:
> sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

8:19 PM
Ah okay.
Then it should appear in the login screen, correct?

jrg
Yes.
It'll be known as Gnome

Thanks, installing it now.

@Jacob: Are you sure that all of the files have finished synchronizing?

@JorgeCastro something like that works
python -c 'import gtk;print gtk.icon_theme_get_default().lookup_icon("im-message-new",48,0).get_filename()'

@GeorgeEdison Yeah

8:23 PM
not sure if i should edit this in?

That's a dumb limit!

@Jacob That's so weird.

raise the limit :)

The files show up in the folder?

8:24 PM
I like to upvote ALL THE THINGS

jrg
@Anna Yeah, I have to wait.

@GeorgeEdison without a file extension

jrg
I've got a list of about 20 posts that will get +1's. So in otherwords, I'll be out of votes in about 4 hours. :P

@Jacob So weird.
So could you rename them though?

My avatar and the baby in my avatar are exhausted...
I'm back :)

8:29 PM
I can say for sure that Gnome works a heck of a lot faster than Unity does on my system.
But where the heck is the minimize button?

You need to install GNOME Tweak Tool to reenable it.

jrg
@Icedrake let me know if/when you find it.

And I suggest you get a dock, unless its useless.

DoR
Arrrggghhhh Why won't the close dialog let you unselect possible dupe questions?
I meant to flag this:

Q: How to navigate and launch installed applications in Ubuntu 11.10 Unity

CerinHow do you navigate and select via keyboard installed applications in Unity? Previously, I added a keyboard shortcut to open the "Applications" menu, and then I could quickly navigate to whatever application I need to open. I can find no similar functionality in Unity. I can't even find a listing...

as a dupe of this:

Q: What are Unity's keyboard and mouse shortcuts?

htorqueIn Unity, are there any pre-defined shortcuts, e.g. to open the dash or unhide the launcher?

@MarcoCeppi Is it possible to remove your own close vote?

@DoR Not sure

8:33 PM
@Rinzwind This should interest you! ;) askubuntu.com/questions/65400/how-to-customize-ubuntu/…

Lol, touch like opening at the top left corner is interesting.
I don't even have to click it for it to open.

It can get annoying though.

DoR
ATI users who want to try Gnome Shell are SOL :(

jrg
Don't we have a generic "How do I install software?" question?

8:35 PM
We do

jrg
link me pl0x?

I fixed the question Alvar linked to (read the question's history for my reasoning).

getting pissed of users who haven't read the FAQ, I should take a break...

jrg
@Alvar relax. 90% of our own users haven't read the FAQ. :P

@jrg Everyone should.

8:38 PM
WHATS A FAQ :V

jrg
@Alvar There's a badge for reading every single part of the FAQ.

nobody reads FAQs, so the first order of business is to not get bothered by it, ha

@jrg really?

jrg
@Alvar Yeah.

@Anna that's what a noob would say.

8:38 PM
@jrg How does it know you read it?

my day job is mainly explaining things to people that they could get if they read our documentation

@GeorgeEdison it stakes you...

it's not always a bad thing that people don't read ;D

jrg
Don't ask me how it does it, but it does.

8:39 PM
Except when it doesn't :P

hey so that keyboard navigation one started to feel like a dupe

jrg
Ok, I'm going to ask again, I know we have it (and I can't find it. :P): Don't we have a generic "How do I install software?" question? Can't find it :P

but I think the person didn't know how to use the dash
so I just answered it

FAQ read! Does the badge come from scrolling to the bottom?

you need to expand each section afaik
if it is it'd be in there
(the built in search is so not finding anything for me today, heh)

jrg
8:41 PM
haha, thanks Jorge.

@jrg I've read it a couple of times, but still no badge...
the system doesn't work! :P

jrg
Maybe you have to visit it multiple times?
shrug IDK - I didn't know about the badge until I got it. :P

@jrg haha
I'm already at a 3 times on every page.... ;D

jrg
@Alvar shrug

this guy gives very low queality answers! :( askubuntu.com/users/26198/duffydack

8:45 PM
HEY EVERY1

jrg
@Alvar want a lot of rep? Write up a answer explaining how to install a package via the software center. make it as genric as you can.

@jrg on what question?

jrg
@Alvar A question i'm about to ask.

@Alvar that guy's avatar should be flagged but I don't see a way to do it

@jrg making the answer

jrg
8:46 PM
@Alvar The title is How do I install software using the Ubuntu Software Center?
Let me know when you've got something basic.

@Anna Flagged one of his posts.

@Anna @GeorgeEdison It's been removed

@MarcoCeppi How do you remove it?
I don't remember anything like that being in the mod. tools.

jrg
He's awesome.

good night all

jrg
Awesome.

sweet, Talkative badge. Didn't even notice you could star lines until I saw that haha

8:55 PM
ooh I got Analytical, too

If you flag something as "not an answer", "duplicate", or any other action that would require removal. Please leave a comment explaining why. It'll make moderation easier and help educate new users about our system since e're getting a lot of new traffic!

jrg
@MarcoCeppi Ok, gotcha.

aaand now I can do bounties. Must not give in to temptation to spend all rep trying to get my RANDR question answered, ha

still working

jrg
8:58 PM
@Alvar Ok, we'll do two answers. One for 11.04/classic gnome2, one for Unity.
I'll work on the Unity one.

@jrg I don't know unity (hate it (no offense or so I just do.))

jrg
Did we decide if it was best to do multiple answers with one Ubuntu version per answer, or one answer with multiple sections, or multiple questions?
Hey, I'm not the Ayatana design team, so I don't care if you like Unity, like it or hate it and wish everyone who designed it went to h*ll.

OK, that last part is a lie. ;)

@jrg let's make one
I'll switch to unity and try to find out what's what!

DoR
Do we really need that question? Installing software from the Software Center couldn't be easier.

jrg
9:09 PM
I'm of the opinion that we need to hold their hand every step of the way, because people don't always think. :)
(ok, that was rude, but its the best way of explaining that question's existence I could come up with)
Not to mention it's a common blogspam post.

@jrg it now haz pictures

jrg
@Alvar I see. :D
Ok, as soon as Shutter finishs it's thing I'll do the Unity/11.10 way.

@jrg cool
shutter is slow but it works! :)

jrg
I wish I could just use gnome-screenshot, but it isn't easy. :P

@jrg don't you have a short-command? like "fn + prt sc"?
i do

jrg
9:14 PM
Yeah I do, but it doesn't let me do things like delayed screenshots, selections and such.

@jrg I have to go now!
but feel free to edit and add stuff in my answer!

jrg
K, cya!

I'll be back tomorrow! :)
:D

jrg
@Greg AHHHG IT BURNS.
;)

9:17 PM
I thought, what could be the worst possible logo for stack.php ...

wow how come nobody told me about w before
this is a handy command!
to think I've been administering a vps with logins for my friends for years without it :(

@Anna You never asked :)

haha there's a badge for deleting your own posts with a score of 3 or higher
"Disciplined"
@MarcoCeppi I did, but more in the sense of "how do I know what the heck is going on on my server" XD
hard to ask about things you don't know exist :)

anyone from 2buntu around? The first image on the right is broken

Q: Persistant 3G connection w/ network manager fails

David PfefferI maintain a persistent 3G connection on a remote device using network manager. However, every so often, the link fails and then does not restart itself. I managed to identify an occurrence of this in my syslog, but honestly I'm not really sure what I'm looking at. It seems that the machine think...

jrg
9:22 PM
@CaptNemo Hangon, let me take a look.
Define "broken"?

I identified areas in my syslog that are indicative of my problem, but I have no idea what I'm looking at.

it says "not available anymore"

hah, that logo is epic @Greg

jrg
let me finish this answer and then I'll take a closer look
Oh, that was our 11.10 countdown.

9:27 PM
greetings

DoR
@Greg Kill it with Fi-...oh wait.

jrg
@CaptNemo I'm going to update it for a 12.04 countdown soonish.

@JorgeCastro: auto chrome update doesnt work as descried on 11.10 (dont know on 11.04) going to issue a bug report over it! askubuntu.com/questions/64318/…

sure

@JorgeCastro Dont take my bounty away! :P

9:29 PM
heh, I don't think you can
But leave a note at the top of the answer that you're still working on it.

jrg
Can't do that. :P

will do

is it me, or does it keep just getting busier and busier?

jrg
Not just you.

9:30 PM
Definitely not just you

DIG DEEP!
30 minutes until I leave for the airport. /me makes it count

@JorgeCastro it's the weekend, people have free time to upgrade

Q: libglib2.0 errors on 11.10 upgrade and installing ia32-libs

ValdisRan through the upgrade to 11.10 and bunch of errors came back. After some initial diagnosis and autoremove via apt-get, I've still got 17 packages that won't install. Running dpkg --audit gives me: The following packages are only half configured, probably due to problems configuring them the ...

makes me cry, seeing mcafee in there

I have to say, I am really liking how this works. I was never really bitten by the Stack Overflow bug before, but little things like how people are encouraged to edit questions to be clearer are creating a brighter future of much less confusing google search results

9:35 PM
yes
addiction is strong

jrg
@Anna Addiction is strong, it's SO MUCH FUN.

@Anna the best part is editing answers
if one person has like the 85% solution you can usually add a screenshot or something to make it awesome

or flagging answers as not an answer...

A: World of goo is not in Ubuntu Software Centre?

TofiI got same thing. I bought Illumination Software Creator, same about 1 year ago. After install Ubuntu 11.10, "Reinstall Previous Purchases" in Software Center gives empty list. There is no program that I purchased earlier.

isn't an answer, but it seems like a bit of a worrying problem if paid apps aren't being carried forward

@jrg @alvar Nice work on that USC one.

jrg
@JorgeCastro Thanks, you'll notice that in one screenshot I have chromium installed, in the next I don't. :P
was kinda like "oops.". lol
is there anything else we need to add to make it awesome instead of nice? :D

9:40 PM
AWWW YEAH.
@jrg I can't vote!
"only 3 more hours"

jrg
"only 3 more hours" - by then you'll be out of the country. And wifi. :P
I've got 3 hours, i'm at 123 rep for today - I think if people had votes left I'd hit the rep cap. :P
(jokingly complains)

sorry, no votes left :P
and only 7 close votes left

jrg
See?! :D

that's like a record for me

I used to regularly run out of votes each day, I should try & hit the vote cap again

9:43 PM
you could work on this one:

Q: Broadcom BCM4313 working, but terribly slow

Ataraxio PanzettaI've installed ubuntu on a Asus 1015 netbook. Everything worked out of the box except for the Wireless adapter, which i had to install with the Additional Drivers application. It apparently installed fine and connects to our wireless network, but it only works at a "funny" speed range that goes ...

:P

yeah, how many duplicates of that have we seen?

i think it has the correct answer, but a step-by-step guide for new users would be great
enough so i'll never buy anything with those chips inside :P

yeah I'm sort of happy enough with my intel wireless for now

jrg
I <3 my intel wireless. :P

ditto

jrg
9:46 PM
After 10.04 it worked fine out of the box.

My intel still doesn't work by itself in 11.10 :(

maybe that's the best answer: buy an intel module, remove the keyboard, replace the broadcom chip. :P

jrg
Nonononon. I don't deal with replacing hardware. :P
Besides, I think on the asus 100* series of netbooks, you have to replace the motherboard... (i could be wrong though)

yay, linus is working on his tree. shouldn't be long until we see 3.1. :-)
ew, that's bad

I hate seeing my answers with 0 votes & no comments, I don't know whether it means that I screwed something up in the answer :)

jrg
9:49 PM
No it just means we all ran out of votes. :D

or that you don't know whether the answer actually answers the question
since we shouldn't really be blindly upvoting

i try hard to upvote most of the dev's answers

jrg
Same here.
I blindly upvote them because I can generally tell if something is horribly wrong.

DoR
How do you edit the community documentation on help.ubuntu.com? I've logged in but I don't see any edit links or anything.

jrg
@DoR Edit button waaaayyyyyy down at the bottom of the page, hidden from everyone.
