A: Why do tomatoes get so hot?

Frankie DubucTomatoes are red, and red is the color that represents heat (as in the expression "red hot"). Thus, it's not the tomato which burns you but the red color of it.

hahaha wtf indeed
not sure whether to flag or to downvote

@aaronut - uhhh...what to do with that?cooking.stackexchange.com/a/22391/1374

Good, I don't have to decide then ;)

Jay
7:42 PM

the apples are freaking on fire

Don't forget the beef.
@rfusca did I ever ask you where your nickname comes from?

@Mien probably

And what did you answer?

7:56 PM
Odyssey of the Mind, often called OM (although the official acronym is OotM), is a creative problem-solving competition involving students from kindergarten through college. Team members work together at length to solve a predefined problem (the Long Term problem); and present their solution to the problem at a competition. They must also generate spontaneous solutions to a problem they have not seen before; this is the spontaneous competition. Odyssey of the Mind is administered by Creative Competitions, Inc. (CCI). History The Odyssey of the Mind program was co-founded by Dr. C. S...
award I won back in 6th grade around the time I was first 'getting online'

Good to know :)

To all members reading this chat/transcript: If you see a spam or troll post from a 1-rep user, don't encourage them by leaving comments or giving them any sort of attention; I wouldn't even downvote. Just flag as spam/offensive and move on.

It's not sure this is a troll.
@rfusca Aha!
Well, congrats on your award then :p

Jay
@Mien really? either this person lives in the middle ages... or this person is a troll

7:58 PM
lol thanks
we would build wood towers out of 3mm balsa sticks and then stack weights on them to see how much we could hold

heh

we had 12g of 3mm balsa sticks that was about 20 cm high and held over 300 kg

wow

imagine something like :

Are they that strong? :s
Oh, you put it on top.

8:02 PM
ya

Okay, I thought you let the weight hang or something.

so, close up, it would look something like google.com/…

Oh I see :) cool

@Mien they've done hanging as well
the 'problem' is slightly different every year

but with 12g, how much did you mean?

8:03 PM
one year it was a bridge, one a tower, one a tower than had to shrink

:)

12 g of balsa wood and glue

gram?

yup, gram

wow

8:05 PM
so, anyway, i'm off. ciao!

bye

8:35 PM
@rumtscho I was not trying to convince anybody; I was just answering your question, which was about suspending a user who wrote a useless answer. You didn't give a link to the answer, nor did you say the answer got flags about being offensive. As that, the usual answer is that (1) users are not suspended if they do something just once, and (2) moderators don't usually delete a question without a good reason.

8:46 PM
@rumtscho No, it didn't sound as something cooking related. At the same time, I didn't think it was offensive, nor do I consider it offensive either. I found it not necessary, but I left for somebody else the offensive call.

8:57 PM
@Jay No, that is not what I do.

9:26 PM
@rfusca flagging time, that's what to do with it. Nice that we're starting to get trolls :-(

Jay
@derobert Right you think its a troll too? @Mien didnt think so and thought it was just a backwards person

@Jay I flagged it as "very low quality" ...
@Jay I'd guess troll, though, personally

Jay
yea thats what i flagged as too

I mean, its a new user, created today, with the only activity—across the entire network—of posting a downright stupid answer.

Jay
dont really know if anything else fits it better
haha a bit harsh... downright stupid

9:31 PM
@derobert I was thinking of flagging it, but rfusca highlighted aaronut already :)
@Jay I just don't know.

@Mien You get a badge, I believe, for helpful flags. So you should always flag :-P

Ah well, I'll flag it too.

Troll posts are very low (perhaps negative) quality; I'd say that's the correct flag!

Lol, I know!
I'm "almost" there.

Jay
@Mien That doesnt mean you shouldnt flag it to get the flagging badge. I dont see anythign wrong with that

9:32 PM
Obviously we need more troll posts so everyone can get the badge faster!

@Jefromi well, "doesn't belong here" is another possibility for flagging it. But this one is just stupid, not offensive (like the last one), so...

I don't flag just to flag, how nice that badge looks to me.

@Jefromi until I had 3k rep, I got quite a few for flagging not-constructive & off-topic

53 helpful flags so far :)

@Mien on a more serious note, having more community members makes the job easier for mods—its much easier to decide if you should actually delete something when you know a bunch of community members weigh in with flags.

9:35 PM
@derobert Yes I know that. But still I'm sometimes withholding my flag, if I know somebody else flagged it already.
But isn't it so, that a post is deleted automatically when it receives enough flags?
Or is that only with spam/offensive flags?

@Mien I think thats only for spam/offensive. And even so, a mod can always undo that if they feel it needed
(or possibly 20k users, if we had enough of those)

in a few years, perhaps.

@Mien yes, I need to go back to stealing all your reps, so that you don't beat me there :-P

Jay
@Jefromi Maybe @Mien is the one who is actually posting those troll posts so she can get the badge -o-

@derobert Oh, do you feel my breath on your neck?
Trololololol
Enjoy :D

9:39 PM
@Mien More, I see your very sharp chef's knife looking for my fruiting body.

@derobert I don't have a very good knife :(

@Mien Oh! That's a relief. Must not be you then.

Can you tell by just looking at it if a knife is sharp?

@Mien Yes, if you have a keen eye.

Also depending on how un-sharp the knife is. The more un-sharp it is, the more visible it is

9:44 PM
(my comment was mostly intended as a joke)

@Jefromi Actually, I think I should get my macro lens out, and take some knife-edge pictures
@rfusca Curious, if you've ever tried taking pictures of the edge of a knife with a macro?

I'm not sure if you can see all of the defects - you see the bigger problems. But the difference between perfect and well-honed but not the sharpest is not quite as visible to the eye, I think.

I wonder if this could be turned into a blog post.

haha

It's easier to see how much blood you can get out of your finger with it.

9:48 PM
hi @ElendilTheTall

@ElendilTheTall that doesn't work for those of us who don't have blood :-P

Oooooooooooooo-k

@Mien YEAH, TROLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLO IS FINALLY OVER.
Oh wait.
There's another verse.

:D
And then you have the 62 verses in your head.

trololololololol trololololo trolololololololololo trolololololo …

At least the lyrics are easy to remember!
But you know what, it's still better than watching all eight episodes of Endless Eight.

Jay
9:56 PM
holy crap that guy is creepy looking

@derobert actually, I was planning on trying it

@Jay Which guy?
@Jay the trololololo guy?

Jay
@derobert yea

@rfusca Hmmm, now we get to hold #TheFryingPan knife photography contest

Jay
hopefully noone tells me "thats actually my dad you asshole" or something
lol

Eduard Anatolyevich Khil (; born 4 September 1934) is a Russian baritone singer and a recipient of the People's Artist Award of the RSFSR. Biography Early life Eduard Khil was born on 4 September 1934 in Smolensk to Anatoly Vasilievich Khil, a mechanic, and Helena Pavlovna Kalugina, an accountant. During the Great Patriotic War (WWII Eastern Front), his kindergarten was bombed, he was separated from his mother and evacuated to Bekovo, Penza Oblast where he ended up in a children's home, wh...
Anyway, time to go home.

I hate arguing with people about milk.

Jay
@derobert yay a proper good time too
@Sobachatina whole milk is the way to go
stop buying shitwater skim milk people

It's the stupid homogenized/pasteurized is evil.

@Sobachatina I <3 skim
@Sobachatina OMG HOMOGENIZED MILK GAVE MY FATHER A THIRD EYE, CANCER, AND STRAPPED HIM TO A ROCKET ugg, ya...people

Yeah, I hate it when my milk doesn't separate!!

A: Can soured raw milk be used to make yogurt?

Rebecca C.the answers here are kind of frustrating. the sour milk is not bad. you can NOT do this with pasteurized milk. this is only done with raw milk. using soured raw milk you can do things like make butter, sour cream, butter milk, cheese, use in too many recipes to count. how do you think we get...

Yes, all those things are made from soured raw milk.....
Oh man, I love "it will have more pro-biotics than before" - it'll sure have more biotics!

Yeah-
They never use useful vocabulary and it is emotionally charged so it is all but impossible to tell if there is any truth hidden in what they are saying.
If milk is handled carefully and allowed to partially ferment does it ferment differently than milk that has been pasteurized?
That is the crux of the question and they can't answer it.
@rfusca- good answer to the pasta question.
Only one discrepancy that isn't worth a comment: pasta doughs are often so stiff that they aren't really kneaded (by hand) at all- running them through the pasta maker is their kneading.

10:31 PM
I like the cocktail question!

@Jefromi Yet another demonstration of why we are so insistent on leaving health out of the equation. The A51 Health proposal is utterly doomed.

@Sobachatina ya, i know, let me edit. I use a mixer so thats not really a factor

There's practically no scientific evidence that probiotics even do anything useful.

@Sobachatina 'fixed'

What's the deal with that other comment "Actually, sour pasteurized milk is (or can be) perfectly fine. Sour homogenized (and thus pasteurized) milk is nasty stuff."
Are they talking about safely soured milk? Like cultured buttermilk? Or are they just crazy?

10:44 PM
When in doubt, crazy.

I do also like the claim that ambient bacteria are safe in Poland but not elsewhere...

Hmm, I'm out of ideas. What's a quick, tasty meal?
quick = no more than 30 minutes

@Mien PBJ

Oh yes, it should be a cooked meal.
I might try enchiladas.

@Mien Well, grilled anything is pretty quick. Steak?

10:57 PM
Maybe. I'll see. It's only for Saturday.
Anyway, I'm off. Nn.

11:13 PM
Wow, enchiladas do not sound like a half-hour meal to me.
Cook filling, make sauce, assemble, heat...

@rfusca Upvoted.
