for the record - you cant delete a question once it has received answers. That is unfair to those who spent time and effort to answer it.
@AviD can you delete locked unanswered questions?
@SEJPM like what?
mods can, mortals cannot no matter their rep (if it's locked, rather than closed)
@AviD like his question just w/o answers (not asking if a mod can but a mortal user)
@SEJPM his question has 7 answers
and for the record, I too am mortal.
not sure about @RoryAlsop - regeneration defnitely expands the lifespan, but that might have a limit too. We have no way of knowing.
16:02
@AviD this was a more general question. Assume I made a question to troll you guys with many edits. Now assume you lock it. Can I delete it?
All humans are mortal. AviD is a tigger, so AviD.. oh... wait
@SEJPM ah. dunno.
@AviD Doesn't it trigger if you have at least one answer with one upvote?
@AviD and it's 6 + 1 deleted (I guess because I only see 6)
I.e. if you have a question with answers but no upvote on any answer, then you can still be deleted (by the user who asked).
16:03
@diagprov oh yeah, possibly. But those questions have plenty of upvotes.
@SEJPM oh yeah thats right
@AviD I used to know this :( not any more.
@diagprov yeah, I dont remember al lthe intricite details of how each feature works.
either 0 answers or at most one answer w/o upvotes
dammit +60 upvotes
16:04
Otherwise, a question can be deleted by 10k community members by voting. The number of votes requires depends on the votes the question has received, so, the more downvoted a question is the fewer votes it takes to delete.
@M'vy its a good answer.
sorry about flagging btw
@AviD link
@AviD a lot of answers are good but don't reach such high
which is why downvoting stuff is useful if you cannot vote to delete.
16:05
well, no, I'm not sorry about flagging, he called us all assholes
For that matter, its a good question, the problem is he didnt like the answer. Aggressively.
@diagprov I think it depends on the overall vote count on answers + question
@M'vy yeah, it was probably because of the controversy.
which is valid for most of you but certainly not for me
@AviD /s/probably//
16:06
@SEJPM It's something like that, yep.
what have i missed who called me an asshole? was it you @Simon i knew the britz and canadians couldnt be friends.

A: Is this authentication scheme secure?

billc.cnNo cryptography using client-side JavaScript can be secure without HTTPS. Any MITM attacker can send JavaScript that can do anything with the secrets the browser has access to, then there will be no secret. If you absolutely cannot use HTTPS, the user must have to a tool to compute the response ...

@silverpenguin It was someone who got suspended, move along, lad.
Is @AviD's mom secure?
@kalina that was a proper use of the flagging.
though I was in the middle of editing instead.
16:07
@Simon for like 24h
@AviD pls, I know how everything works
@kalina I wasnt saying it for your benefit, but for theirs.
@notalmosnow lol
@AviD He made another account.
16:07
@notalmosnow Hello.
hahaha
big ban plz
@Simon oh, I thought you referenced his post and not his chat message
circumventing moderation = launch into the sun
@SEJPM Ah, then yes, he did get a 24h.
16:08
@AviD...
release
the MANATEES
@AviD, the mod who has no issues hair triggering a room timeout but ponders over obvious bans
0/10 would follow again
@kalina that's not the same dimension.
@kalina aww sweet
you know I am not ALWAYS in this window, right?
sometimes not even on this machine.
@AviD you aren't!?
16:10
that's not acceptable
what kind of pathetic excuse is that
THE MOST, that's what
"I'm sorry I couldn't moderate I fell asleep"
And she ignored me because I was "constantly" negative/mocking.
Mhm.
UNACCEPTABLE
basically what he's saying is that College Humor is more important than moderatoring
@notalmosnow is there a reason you're back? This site has rules, if you try to bypass them the results are not pretty. Do you have a reasonable explanation?
@kalina heh, this too happens.
there is no reasonable explanation
he wants a question removing which is not allowed
he doesn't want to be banned which is not allowed
and ftr, I am always willing to give a chance for a reasonable explanation.
16:11
@Simon To be fair, you do that a lot... sometimes I can't tell if you're joking, or intentionally trying to be negative / harsh to someone, especially when it isn't warranted.
if this was me and we were in the bridge I'd definitely have been deleted by now
@kalina pls, sometimes its SMBC Theater
@MarkBuffalo My point was that she does the same.
I did not deny it.
if you wait any longer he won't even be circumventing a ban!
@kalina I though you were here precisely because we're not the bridge?
16:12
@kalina we're not in the bridge.
rekt
@kalina so there ya go
disgraceful
@Simon Ah, yeah... I understand. I think people perceive both of you differently, I know I do.
and whatever x100
16:13
I am all for conflict resolution. I have no trouble escalating when warranted, but I will first try my utmost to find a peaceable resolution.
@Simon where am I being negative/mocking ?
@AviD bla bla bla I'm bored of your diplomacy in matters not concerning me
@kalina hehhe
also note he is not chatting at this point, so it is effectively the same as reading the transcript. Which is open and public.
@AviD the rule says circumventing a ban - he created a new account, the circumventing has been done already
"I'm sorry officer, I wasn't drink driving in charge of a motor vehicle, I was rolling really fast with the engine off while under the influence"
the difference is... there isn't one
@kalina sorry, I'm not a stickler for the rules, but for their spirit.
Of course he's not chatting, he has 1 rep.
16:16
I dont follow rules blindly, I am willing to accept an explanation.
sometimes too willing.
@AviD please keep spewing all of these random super awesome quotable statements, they will be useful next time
4
@kalina heh cheers
anyway @Simon brings up a good point and it hurts me to say that
Peace is almost always the answer. When it isn't, the only answer is total annihilation.
you're waiting for a banned user who has created a new account to circumvent his ban to gain 20 rep so he can chat rather than just banning him
16:17
@Simon though he said a line 16min agos
@kalina no, at this point I dont really care - he's not doing anything.
@kalina Is that a euphemism?
are we talking about a different problem user from the one who was chatting in here a minute ago?
@M'vy other account. which was kicked for 30 minutes.
@MarkBuffalo I doubt @Simon's point is that good
16:18
@M'vy Are you sure?
@AviD with same name?
@M'vy notsame
EVERYBODY: I'm just winding up @AviD and don't care in the slightest about any of this
there is no drama here
@RobertHarvey 你是美丽啊
yknow @kalina, this may surprise you, but we are not the police. We're the garbagemen.
16:19
It was all a hoax
@kalina heehee, ya dont think they know that?
feel free to wind me up any time.
I wind up your mom.
there is really no way I can say that without making it sound crude.
@Simon see ^
@AviD really? Because most of the mod team act like American military in the middle east coming across a building full of women
im a manatee
16:21
@silverpenguin who's the bot now ?
I am just bored haha
@kalina yeah that's a murkan attribute
@kalina mind you, I am in the middle east, in a building full of women.
@AviD your rolleyes sarcasm does not placate me
@diagprov no.
not military, though
16:22
I locked myself out of AWS forever ago and now I'm being charged $15/mo to do literally nothing
Hmmm - I'm sure I meant to reply to Simon. Oh well.
@kalina that wasnt sarcasm.... I live here, and have a wife and pile of daughters.
"pile"?
@RoryAlsop Yes.
@AviD ... what @Ixrec said
16:23
@AviD is that the collective noun?
@Ixrec starting with a 2 year old, 6 year old, more... yes, often they are a pile.
@AviD Aren't you living in an underground lair that is nuclear-missile-proof, with a tank parked on the drive?
brief serious comment: on most sites I never notice most of the mods, because silent garbagemen are silent
@RoryAlsop yes. School of fish, pride of lions, pile of daughters.
@RoryAlsop What were you replying to?
16:24
@diagprov hey now, no one said nuclear.
@kalina They try to save them?
You need to be saved
it is bomb proof, and chemical weapon proof, but not nuclear proof.
also, thats just my lair / office. rest of the house is regular house. and above ground.
nuclear proof is hard to achieve.
how can it be chemical weapons and bomb proof but not nuclear? >_>
@schroeder: you just locked a question I was about to answer
3
16:25
@silverpenguin nuclear > bomb
@AviD awww disappointed now.
sealed room -> chemical proof
@ThomasPornin link
@MarkBuffalo well I am quite emotionally and psychologically broken
oh yeah, its also a near faraday-cage. So almost EMP proof.
16:26
@AviD but chemical proof would make it fallout proof also right?
@MarkBuffalo and no, that's not what happens

Q: What is a safe way to allow any windows user to encrypt a file but only a specific application decrypt it

The Mithral SmithI've developed a service that reads text files from a location. Some of the text files may contain sensitive information. We would like to allow any user to run a standalone tool to encrypt the files such that only the service application can decrypt it. I've created a MyServiceAccount.cer fil...

@ThomasPornin REKT
@silverpenguin hmm. good question, dont rightly know.
@silverpenguin probably not
16:27
@silverpenguin however, protecting against fallout usually requires being sealed in for a much longer period of time than chemical. For most chemical attacks, 12 hours is enough.
@kalina :( It pains me to hear that
a plastic container could be chemical proof, but radiation can still penetrate
I dont think we could stay locked in here for more than that.
@ThomasPornin good gosh I hope @schroeder doesn't get mauled
@ThomasPornin not locked, migrated
16:28
Doesn't it belong to SU?
If @Simon had made that mistake I wouldn't have hesitated to "LOL @SIMON NOOB"
2
A: What is a safe way to allow any windows user to encrypt a file but only a specific application decrypt it

Tom LeekIn Windows, users' stores for private key are protected with a system known as DPAPI. Ultimately, the private keys get encrypted with a key derived (indirectly) from the user's password. Thus, no, even Administrator cannot push private keys into the private store of a user without typing the user...

I just... can't bring myself to use "noob" and "ThomasPornin" in the same sentence
2
It does not seem to be specifically about Windows Server.
@kalina I'm surprised you limit yourself so.
16:29
Also, I feel like shit today
@kalina since when did you display such respect? ;-)
@Simon In fact it is an application design question about private keys.
@Xander well he's properly above the "definitely more intelligent than I" marker
Not really a question of usage.
@DavidFreitag we like @Simon too.
16:30
@AviD I'm not sure it would, like you say you'd need to be in there a while. Also it might not be radiation proof.
Maybe relevant on SO, but I think it was not off-topic on Sec.SE.
@ThomasPornin There are so many questions in there that I can't tell what the essence is.
@ThomasPornin yeah, not sure it shoudl have been migrated. oh well.
@ThomasPornin I think I agree...
You only agree because it's all about what pornu thinks.
I won't make a casus belli of that specific case, but, out of curiosity, can mods from the source site can cancel a migration ?
16:33
@ThomasPornin Pretty sure they can't
Dec 29 '11 at 13:29, by Tom Leek
@ThomasPornin EAT DIRT, NOOB !
@ThomasPornin that doesn't count
self deprecating humor is not the same thing
you guys have big conversations and then when i look back after pretending to do work you stop D:
@silverpenguin that's because we know.

Q: You've Probably Seen Me Naked

GentlePurpleRain As an alphabet aficionado, I can make you laugh long into the night. As a make of Japanese vehicle, I can keep your surroundings clean and beautiful. As an execution apparatus, I make you laugh despite not maturing. As a mixed-up romance, I lead tens of millions. As a gardening tool, I...

16:34
I don't remember seeing @DavidFreitag naked
@ThomasPornin dont think so, but can flag it for the remote mod's attention.
@kalina Yeah, that's definitely a memorable experience.
@DavidFreitag is it though?
Phew, AviD if you wanna know my side of the story, I'm willing to. You're the only guy who appears to appeal to reason before abusing their mod things. (Yeah expletives are not allowed, may I remind you, you also referred to me in a deplorable way yesterday? But I guess it's ok if you do it)
@RoraΖ It's the sort of image that would be burned into your mind for ever.
16:36
@DavidFreitag pls, if I wanted to see naked man I'd just google "Naked man with OHMYGOSHNOMYEYESARGHHdfiag9812e1nd siodhf
@almosnow not quite, and I'm not really willing to hear you berate other moderators for doing their job.
perhaps you are confused.
@almosnow ahahaha, @AviD is reasonable are you saying @AviD is reasonable before abusing their... oh my
"I'm not really willing to hear you berate other moderators for doing their job" Never said that, but whatever then, believe whatever you want.
@almosnow @AviD using reason ? That's unheard of.
2
@kalina he said before, not "instead"
@ThomasPornin oh snap. I just got bearburned.
that's gonna leave a mark.
16:38
Just the way @AviD likes it ;)
do we have any good, "My personal information has been stolen in a breach" answers on this site?
if so, please direct me
ok guys im going to pee... no one start a conversation without me... you have to all sit here quietly
@almosnow first of all, THIS TIME you weren't banned by a moderator (I am not a moderator), you were banned by community consensus.
@MarkBuffalo I believe so, let me look
16:39
@almosnow "Abusing", you've called everyone here assholes, son.
@RoraΖ Thanks, I would like to reference this
@almosnow secondly, you came in here and called us all assholes, that's not acceptable behavior
@kalina I have not idea what you're talking about neither I'm here to discuss that.
@almosnow I'm really not sure what kind of cognitive dissonance you have going on, but what else would be meant by "You're the only guy who appears to appeal to reason before abusing their mod things."
I'm here because I want to reopen the question for editing, because I think it is a valuable question.
16:39
@kalina Sure, but did you consider that perhaps we deserved it?
@almosnow And yet the way you do it is join the chat and call everyone names?
@almosnow I'll hear your side of the story.
@Simon language, boy
I mean, it's not true, but did you at least consider it?
@almosnow well you don't ask moderators to reopen questions, that is a community action
16:40
@almosnow maybe you didnt hear me... sh untill the manatee has returned from his uriniation
@AviD .........................................
Yeah ok, language, got it. Can we move on?
Oooh look that bot is back
@AviD Why don't you tell the same to @kalina?
Also again, I may remind you that yesterday you had a deplorable attitude as well.
16:40
@Simon Gender bias.
Double standards, but I don't care.
@Xander not really much of a side to hear.
@AviD You're wrong on that.
@DavidFreitag bot? i havent left yet unless you mean someone else
@silverpenguin I do
16:41
@Simon heh she added that after to spite me. besides, she was just quoting him.
@silverpenguin he does
yes yes, I know.
@AviD ...................
Wow it's nuts in here today. Drama?
I'm hassling you.
16:42
Anyway, I want this question unlocked security.stackexchange.com/questions/116144/…
there is no drama
Look at the edit date you pony.
@silverpenguin btw. what are you? a shy Manatee? do as the other, you don't really need to leave for that :)
@almosnow unlikely. but feel free to link.
If there's a reason why it should stay locked please state it
16:42
@kalina Sure seems like there's some drama
Unlikely... but why? Just state the reason.
@almosnow why?
@almosnow congratulations, try asking as though it isn't your right to have the question unlocked
a lock was put on it because you were abusing the site.
That is unacceptable.
devil's advocate: did anyone ever explain to @almosnow why it got locked in the first place?
16:43
@almosnow Because it descended into a comment war, and you insisted on adding meta-conversations to the post.
@DavidFreitag nah this isn't drama, this is just a couple of people in here talking about site content
No, but I think why
Yeah exactly Xander
You remember I'm pretty sure it was you.
@almosnow the unlikely was me about calling you names.
@kalina Yeah, I suppose. If there was drama it would be a sea of blue in here.
@almosnow Oh, really? See this:
yesterday, by Rory Alsop
@almosnow - you are very mistaken about what has been happening to your post. It was being edited to improve - not by a mod, but by the community - which is exactly how it should be. Mods get involved when you start being abusive - we will not tolerate that
16:44
That is not true.
@almosnow " I know already that security experts love to repeat buzzwords here and there because they read it everywhere in magazines and blogsm but when these guys enter the real world (which may never happen, btw) they'll find out that it's not necessarily made of all the things they assume to be true."
Yeah
How is that wrong?
@almosnow you know that we can see the entire history, yeah?
Yeah sure, see it.
Can you see the comments that were deleted?
@almosnow It's not wrong so much as it makes everyone's brain leak from every oriface
16:44
@almosnow Yes, I tried to remove the meta-conversations from the post. You acknowledged my efforts in a particular way.
@almosnow how is what wrong?
@almosnow As a mod, yes he can.
the edit history of the post itself shows no mod involvement until the lock, dunno about comments
@almosnow of course. And the only reason you were not banned for so much longer, is my patience, and willingness to give you another chance.
@almosnow Yes, they can.
16:45
OH is this the post that had a bunch of rants edited into it?
You dont seem to be interested in earning that.
@almosnow You think that insulting people who are experts in their fields, who are giving up their own time to answer questions you've asked, is acceptable?
@kalina Yuuuup.
Do it please, check comment history, someone started deleting comments where I explained my particular scenario and how it made sense.
@MarkBuffalo I can't find it
the search on here sucks
16:46
@RoraΖ Yeah it's awful
Someone didn't like that, IDK why, maybe because it didn't fit with their view of the world of "just use HTTPS everywhere".
And that's crossing the line
@almosnow having a discussion in the comments is wrong, you're supposed to edit the post while keeping it coherent - discussion in comments = post locked
Even for you mods, that's crossing it
@almosnow NO, a moderator deleted the comments where you were insulting and attacking everybody.
That is unacceptable.
@RoraΖ Google: site:security.stackexchange.com <query>
16:46
@almosnow I saw the comment history, you started insulting and attacking everyone.
@almosnow yes, you crossed the line often.
You can add it to chrome's search engine list.
Which is think is pretty understandable, because his behavior was not appropiate
@DavidFreitag I love this, yes
So I can search the site by typing security <query> into the address bar.
16:47
:27991404 once again I remind you that this type of behavior will not be tolerated here.
sorry, I hate that word
Ooooh flag?
HAHAHA
Yup flag.
Zerg rush!
16:47
@kalina Most people do. It's considered to be the most offensive word in English and pretty much guarantees an 18+ rating in the UK.
Who pushed that button ?
Attention all foreign mods please read the room description above ^^ Thanks!
hello foreign mods, fear not the local mods have addressed the comment in question
4
@ThomasPornin I did
okay everybody shush for a few minutes.
16:48
it was a completely warranted flag
This room was placed in timeout for 2 minutes; the topic of this room is "A special place where bears are ursine overlords, ponies are pyros, gender checks are not carried out through brain surgery and mods are self-censoring... non-Sec.SE mods please consult the local team before considering bans :) PS we don't do hardware/software support" - conversation should be limited to that topic.
sorry, I need the wheel.
@kalina You weren't the only one.
why did you just place the whole room in timeout when it was only one commenter causing issues
4
BTW did you know room timeouts don't work on owners :)
@RоryMcCune even so keep in mind when flagging it goes network wide.
@almosnow As you have been repeatedly told - rule #1 here is BE NICE. If you cannot do that, you WILL be shown the door, permanently next time.
16:49
@Darth_Vader sure, I didn't flag :)
@RоryMcCune To prevent additional issues.
@RоryMcCune then the user needs to be suspended from chat
@almosnow as for your question - your behavior is EXACTLY why we even need mods in the first place.
@Darth_Vader I would agree, hopefully the local mods would concur with your assessment :)
and for the record @almosnow - irrelevant of the validity of the question, yes "USE TLS" IS the correct and ONLY proper answer. Not that you want to hear it.
16:50
It's really nice how timeouts affect non-mods.
Do I need to say ANYTHING at all about the abuse of room timeouts?
I like the countdown thingy
Not frustrating or anything.
We don't feel penalized at all for another user's behavior.
Although the numbers should get even bigger
@kalina no, they make sense if everyone's going too far, but when it's just one person drop them and move on
16:51
@Simon Hehehe penalized.
There's no sarcasm in what I just posted.
ooo drama :) was someone wrong on the internet? LOL
@Darth_Vader amazing, how we waste 30 minutes of our lives to get to the same conclusion I've been suggesting he enacts
@DavidFreitag hueheuehue.
@TildalWave We gettin' supar trolled
16:51
the only trolling happening in here is @AviD
@RоryMcCune becuuuuz people kept interrupting me while I was handling him.
@DavidFreitag didya press the button?
Interrupt you?
How can we interrupt you?
who goes to the end of the world to avoid suspending a troublesome user but will without hesitation put the room into a timeout
IT'S WRITTEN TEXT
16:52
@avid create a dedicated room ?
@TildalWave No it was @kalina for something I didn't read which was apparently justified according to the modship
@kalina well the amount of flags he received he was auto suspended by the system. If it proceeds a further time suspension can be done by the mods. It's not my chatroom I typically visit so I would leave that to the SE mods that maintain that site.
@AviD Why not take him to another room. Set it up in gallery mode so everyone can see, but only you and he can talk, if you're worried about the private room discussion thing.
@DavidFreitag C word that ends with t.
@kalina When in doubt, nuke it with orbit.
16:52
@Simon well I tried shushing you, it didnt take
@Simon Oooh the one that rhymes with runt? I like that word.
@AviD Oh, really? Where?
@kalina IT WAS 60 SECONDS
@AviD 120 seconds
@AviD it was 120 seconds, actually
16:53
5 mins ago, by AviD
okay everybody shush for a few minutes.
@AviD 120 seconds...
@M'vy ooh derp shoulda done that :$
HAHAHAHA
@Simon carrot?
since it's a two minute countdown
16:53
@kalina oops
casual
@AviD Yeah like we were the problem.
@RоryMcCune Wait, did we have a flag? Why is it I always miss the fun stuff?
@Iszi You missed it literally by 5 mins.
@Iszi No, we had about 20 flags!
16:53
soz ex-one
this chain reaction of drama is exactly the sort of thing that room timeouts are meant to stop...
@Simon Coconut?
@Iszi yeah a user started swearing in a non-amusing way so got correctly flagged
@DavidFreitag no, this was like slamming a book on the table.
Carrot and coconut are very offensive words, I agree.
16:54
Well congratulations @AviD, I'm lost for words to describe how I feel about the amount of fail you contain
@Ixrec exactly.
@RоryMcCune Holy shit. We had a legit flag in here?!
@AviD More like slamming a book on everyone's keyboard
@kalina :-(
@Iszi two I think, yeah
16:54
@DavidFreitag heh
@Iszi inorite,
@Iszi Yep
Anyway, lunch! Hope you get this resolved mods, I have faith.
@RоryMcCune I dunno, the user repeated what they did in this circumstance. What they did wasn't acceptable, but the word in that case wasn't actually directed at anyone here when re-quoted.
@DavidFreitag ...of the heart, and no one's gonna bend or break me...
Well, there appears to be less drama than yesterday.
16:55
@DavidFreitag Lunch? Seriously? It's still 11:55.
@diagprov I don't want to have to see it, maybe if we're going to start casually using such language we could apply for Stack Exchange to be reclassified as an adult oriented website
Which, would destroy SE since the bulk of their visits are from behind corporate firewalls
OR
you could not use that word
o no it's him
hides
@Xander THE BEAR HUNGERS.
@kalina Well, they've already given Sex.SE a shot. And I think BDSM.SE got shot down too...
@diagprov it was directed at @RoryAlsop. And thats besides the point
16:56
@kalina Same
its like making a rape joke, and saying "it wasnt anybody specific!" Some words are hurtful.
buying new mod
@ThomasPornin Oh no! The Universe tired of entropy! :D
buying new mod tree fiddy
@ThomasPornin let me know which
16:57
@TomLeek Well the bear, obviously. Bears can have lunch whenever they like, because they don't wear watches or carry smartphones to tell them when to have lunch properly.
@kalina Corporate firewalls already filter out chat.stackexchange.com (because "chat")
@AviD In its original context, I'm assuming. In the context above, he was quoting what he did, unless I'm very much mistaken?

bye tommy leeky
@ThomasPornin they do? I'm behind my employer's firewall
16:58
@diagprov well, he said he got upset and started calling the guy names. so basically repeated his slur.
Wow. Someone's trying to start up a LGBTQ.SE?
@Ixrec Usually. For instance, right now I cannot access the DMZ.
@Iszi o ffs
@ThomasPornin But... then, um... wait, so.... HOW ARE YOU HERE
@Simon That one's still in the early proposal stages.
16:59
@MarkBuffalo oh right - the details of the question suggested a migrate
And apparently there were two attempts at Sex.SE. I could swear there was one try for BDSM.SE but I can't find it on A51.
@schroeder Initially I wanted an unlock, but the question turned out to be migrated so I answered there. But technically, I think the question was on-topic and may have stayed on sec.SE.
@AviD Magic.
