@Ohnana In this case we're talking about identical files, but different metadata at the torrent level.
Adi
Adi
Just different piecing
Or one is a batch or has different file ordering.
Adi
Adi
Back when I used to scene, this used to cause me a lot of headache

A: Torrent padding files

ArvidThis feature was originally implemented by BitComet (with fairly poor quality of implementation in my opinion) as a way to make it simpler to de-select certain files from being downloaded. Since bittorrent downloads pieces, and pieces may span multiple files. Otherwise when you de-select some fil...

torrent padding explained
@Ohnana ohnuhnuh pls
Torrent shouldn't even need padding. Just have shorter pieces at the end of the file, just like in the end of the torrent. It's such an obvious and dumb design decision.
Adi
Adi
Anyway, the format survived pretty well. Lots of standardized libs for all OSes
Nobody is gonna change any of that
I'm entirely impartial to torrents, I was just curious what you two were on about so I refreshed my memory a bit :)
18:05
@Adi Short of a SHA-1 second pre-image attack, which isn't even on the horizon.
hmm perhaps a sufficiently spectacular collision might be enough.
After all developers learned that MD5 sucks.
Adi
Adi
@CodesInChaos When was the universal switch to SHA-1 happen in torrent?
@Adi torrent was always SHA-1.
Just like git.
Adi
Adi
Are you sure?
Adi
Adi
I'm pretty sure there was a time it was MD5
18:08
ed2k was MD4 based (which isn't even second pre-image resistant)
But that was before my time
I think there were some e-donkey "contemporaries" that used MD5, can't remember any of their name, just that they were popular in Russian and such
Adi
Adi
I'm trying to find any reference on the interwebs
Not very successful
eMule? I think
or that was the same thing
maybe Kazaa

Q: I am 21 and I am terrified beyond belief of my father

user21063I am a 21 year old female living in Egypt and I am beyond terrified of my own father...at least i think he is my father. To say it shortly i think i might be adopted at a young age and no one told me about it. In Egypt, daughters must carry the same name as the father my name is different than m...

Yes, that was a bad joke, it's unfortunate what's happening to her but we all know ovid is from Egypt.
Do most people in Egypt speak perfect English?
@Simon i mean, if you're going to use the internet, you'd probably pick up english
Hum I guess.
also now i'm sad
soz =\
I do not believe such organisations would exist in Egypt, or if they did, they would be operating outside the law. You are answering as a person who lives in a western country, and perhaps believe the rights we enjoy are universal. They are not. — user1751825 yesterday
re: women's shelter
18:49
I wish those countries wouldn't exist.
you know, for all the shit I heap on america sometimes, at least we have things like victim's advocates, women's shelters, domestic violence laws...
And cops who love to murder people.
o I'm soz
very true.
at the same time, they're not afraid to arrest abusers and put them in jail
That's good.
@Ohnana Yes, America looks like a zoo of trigger-happy maniacs only when compared to Europe (or Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand...).
18:52
@ThomasPornin global perspective is good
like the man in saudi-controlled arabia who was sentenced to jail and corporal punishment for tweeting atheist sentiment.
@Ohnana And like 2000 lashes, right? Poor dude.
or the gay people in nigeria who fear for their lives...
@Simon yeah, it's insanity
I heard a report saying that Trudeau was thinking of erasing criminal records of homosexuality.
Which is a law from 1969, I believe.
Well duh, I have no fucking idea why no one already did that.
@Simon it's part of the cleanup
mississippi only made slavery illegal in 2013
...technically.
@Ohnana ffs
18:56
since federal US law supercedes state law, it was already illegal, they just didn't remove it from the consitution because it was largely a symbolic act to do that
"deadwood" laws are common in the US, and that's fine
Yes, let's just remind people how dumb we were back then.
To not reproduce a such dumbness.
@Ohnana Like the one that says that you can get a fine if you do not tie properly your car to a post when you park ?
my point is, once you fix the laws, there's cleanup involved, and there are usually more pressing actions to take
@ThomasPornin haha yes! although it's a horse specifically i believe.
of course, Trudeau is most likely prioritizing the criminal record sealings because of public opinion. it's a quick way to make the populace happy.
At least it's a very positive action.
@Ohnana The point of the law is indeed to avoid stray horses, but it applies to cars as well because it is for all chariots, and a car is defined as "a chariot without horses".
19:00
@ThomasPornin i see!
@ThomasPornin What a nice definition.
it would be a useful law if you didn't put your parking brake on
car goes rolling down a hill, "tie that shit up next time"
@Simon Democracy is a very good thing when what the populace begs for is actually right.
Some people do get tickets here if they park on a hill and their wheels are not turned towards the sidewalk.
I got hacked!
19:01
@ThomasPornin Indeed, it gives some faith back in humanity.
@HenryWHHack Is it you or the bad guys talking right now?
Well there is this hacking war going on between me and my friend which is not my friend because my friend will not hack me so is my enemy who was my friend so hacking war how to stop it?
that sentence makes no sense.
@HenryWHHack Are you under medication?
2
have you tried asking your friend to stop?
@Ohnana He said it's not friend because his friend will not hack him!
19:05
what is ap isolations
@HenryWHHack Baby don't hurt me.
@HenryWHHack Report the situation to the nearest adult and wait for a display of educational authority.
4
^ Definitely the best solution.
I do not recommend ovid as a good adult.
how to set a virtualbox vm to be on my home network?
19:09
Damn it, I was about to say RTFM.
thank you
You're too nice, pornu.
Default configuration of VirtualBox is to use NAT, which is fine for most purposes.
If you want the VM to have its own IP visible to other hosts on the local network, then you will want to use bridged networking.
how do the pro hacker guys test malware in a vm
19:12
you know white hats
@HenryWHHack The whole point of using a VM is to try to contain the infestation, so I'd say that they start by not configuring their VM to be on the local network...
you should try google, it's pretty helpful and it costs $0.00
@ThomasPornin looooooool
Sacré pornu.
I am bill gates
You're a guy who has "Hack" in his name.
19:13
can i have a billion dollar
plz.
here is a secret I real have a trillion dollars but I trick the work to think I only have 80 billion!
@Simon: there is a security conference in Montreal in May: nsec.io
Do you have any knowledge about it, or plan to participate ?
@ThomasPornin YAY
@ThomasPornin Had no idea. I was hoping it'd be talks.
I'd need to find a team.
@Simon There are talks, on 19th and 20th
That's right after my PWK course will be completed so at least I'll be full of knowledge on the subject.
Ah, didn't even read the whole website, typical me.
I'm definitely interested to go for the talks then.
19:18
It is possible I'll be there. Apparently there is some budget for that.
how old do you have to be to be here
Bleh, 200$ if you purchase after Feb. 28th.
@ThomasPornin Cool, I might ask my employer too.
I don't want to sound too greedy since they're paying for PWK though.
@HenryWHHack Legally, the SE network is restricted to 13+ people.
But mentally a lot of participants don't qualify, of course.
@ThomasPornin Would you participate in the competition?
@ThomasPornin Dayum.
oh thank the lord!
19:20
@HenryWHHack Who?
Oh wow, the training sessions are expensive!
However, they seem to be very nice.
@ThomasPornin if you're gonna go you might as well ask for some sec.se swag
and you might even get SE to cover some of the cost
just saying ;)
Any one want to here some Info Tech/Info Sec jokes laughing is optional?
@Simon Usually I don't participate to competitions, and I would prefer to be back in my home at that time.
@HenryWHHack Poor InfoSec jokes would not be worse than the usual traffic here...
@kalina just wondering, why do you hate me so much?
oww c'mon that was below the belt :P
19:25
@ThomasPornin Understandable.
It sucks that my IT buddies are security illiterate.
I'd have to rock the event solo.
you know I am making my own chat room call the firewall.
@HenryWHHack Is it a public room?
well it is not up
Is it gonna be public?
19:28
It's a shitty Firewall then if it lets everyone in.
Concluding too soon, what if it lets nobody out?
It is a good firewall
hackermanjaro is the first thing you will see thats my nickname next to henry wh hack
Those are good names.
I now henry white hat hacker
and hacker+manjaro linux
ok wait how do you create a chatroom
I think you gotta be a true hacker to make one.
19:37
I know how computers,cpu,gpu,motherboards,hardrives,ram,routers,switches,firewalls,modems,n‌at,dhcp,dns,tcp,ip,tcp/ip,udp,dmz,isp,internet,cloud computing vm and etc works
What's the "etc", exactly?
It could be a lot of things.
well that is not the full list.
Where's the full list?
@Simon: you will be proud: I have called someone a nerd.
@ThomasPornin Oh my, online or IRL?
19:42
@Simon okay servers,ethernet,programming,wifi,antivirus,antimalware,malware,botnets,rootkits‌,linux,windows,unix and I am a expert in science.
@Simon In Sec.SE

A: What does this say? It's in MD5

Tom LeekMD5 is not encryption, it is hashing. Not the same thing at all. Otherwise, congratulations ! Whoever sends that to you is proposing marriage: $ printf "You will be my wife one day" | md5sum 1ce67f05968d51656eb71f13368f0b2d - (Take care before answering "yes": he looks like a big nerd.) E...

@ThomasPornin HAHAHA.
@HenryWHHack Expert in science is good, but what about theology ?
yes I am a computer expert+programmer+scientist.
I picture the nurdy nurd at school who posted this to a girl on Facebook and said "it's in MD5".
@HenryWHHack Very nice! How many books have you published?
19:45
My notification bar blew up with the discussion about sec tools being on topic
@schroeder It's fine, we understood that you guys have the final word and we're wrong since we're not mods and have a different opinion.
is there anything I can help with, as I'm sitting here in the penthouse suite in San Fran about to go to RSA?
@schroeder He. You wanted to be a mod. You asked for it.
well I am acting as bill gates in a up coming movie.
@ThomasPornin oh lawdd
that is the worst fucking way to propose a marriage
sounds like a command
RUN OP RUN
@schroeder have fun and don't get too drunk
<3
19:48
@Ohnana It could be a Wayne's World (mis)quote, but I fear that @Simon's interpretation is spot on.
I tried to impress a girl on MSN once by screenshotting her profile picture and using it as mine.
Did not get laid.
It's a hard life to be a nurd.
@Simon story of your life
@Simon the principles on this issue are 1) we are infosec and we use unique tools that others don't use, therefore we can be a valuable resource to those needing help, and 2) we are NOT a replacement for RTFM... answering questions that are already answered by the dev/vendor only creates noise
python c c++
19:50
@Ohnana pls I'm no longer ugly now.
@schroeder +1
where the line is drawn between those 2 principles is a judgment call sometimes
@Simon That's what the beard is for ?
@ThomasPornin Exactly; to hide the ugliness.
19:51
you know I am out of here.
@schroeder ... unless the answer can be made to be fun in some way. In which case it's OK.
@schroeder I feel like most questions could be answered by RTFM or if the user would research/test more.
Anyway, I'm no longer flagging questions about tools, since I don't think I understand exactly where the line is.
@Simon I agree
@Simon That is true of all questions about all topics, not just tools.
@Xander Well, for example, some questions about crypto would require the user to obtain YEARS of studying the subject. I think it's fair to ask someone who did spend those years to share his knowledge.
19:53
@schroeder the problem is if a user's first interaction with Sec.SE is to be told "RTFM n00b <close question>", even in a nice way, they're not very likely to continue to make use of the site
@schroeder I think those two ends of the spectrum are clear. We do have a fair few grey area questions though, so I reckon we just take them as they come
Anyone heard of Mosse Security company? :p
@RоryMcCune we need to say RTFM nicely :-)
@RоryMcCune i try to post comments to guide people nicely
(really though, if it is a "how do I select verbose mode on nmap" sort of thing then I say close
as that just shows laziness
19:54
@Simon It can be assumed that for almost all questions, the answer is somewhere at the other end of a Google search, but it really takes knowledge to navigate it.
but if the question is more like "how verbose do I need to set nmap in order to get information X" that would seem to be much more suitable
@ThomasPornin very true, targeted google searching and parsing of results to get good content is (to me) a serious skill
@everyone in this chatroom hello don't mean to be a bother or annoy anyone!
In a way, saying that everything can be obtained with Google is like saying that Michelangelo did not make the "David" sculpture, he just removed the stone bits which were around it.
@ThomasPornin That's exactly what he did!
19:56
@Simon Besides that's an indirect quote from "Rambo III".
o, I did not watch those movies.
@Simon Action movies from the 1980s were the best !
@ThomasPornin I'm kind of a snob, I see bad special effects and immediately facepalm.
They had to compensate for lack of special effects with good acting and superior narrative.
I did not say a word during the old Star Wars to not enrage fans.
@ThomasPornin I really wonder if that's sarcastic.
19:59
@Simon You would have to watch the movies to know that.
Indeed.
