morning

@kalina mourning

1 hour later…
9:41 AM
why am I so tired today? I'm far more tired today than I was yesterday...
and yesterday I only had 2 hours of sleep... last night I had 9...
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME

9:53 AM
@kalina biochemistry is a fascinating thing. If possible perform some short (~5 minutes) nods so your body will start to consume the tired hormones (I forgot which ones that were). Also I heard a lot of people say that helping their digestion (eating Figs, for example) made them more awake after an hour or so.

Q: What are the pro and cons of allowing opinionable but useful questions?

SamImagine I go on this Website and I ask for a mature implementation (also for a production environment) of an AOP framework which is usable in commercial projects for free and which allows me to decorate properties with attributes that allows to log property values. I think the question could be...

10:04 AM
@StackExchange Sam is back...

10:44 AM
@AngeloNeuschitzer Ouch. What about?
Btw, script update: pastebin.mozilla.org/4355058
Now export/import should work incl. site-specifics.

@Izzy The quality of the questions that came in today, there were some quite weak ones.
(But it was mostly a play of words, like "Morgen - Morcheln")
(Advertising) In case some of you have a contractor job for a Java/J2EE Dev open, drop me a note :)

@AngeloNeuschitzer Yupp. I've just commented on one (you already did the same on it, that "web sharing" thingy). Uh-oh...
@AngeloNeuschitzer LOL Guten Appetit :)
@AngeloNeuschitzer Munich OK? Then see that meta post for missing details #D (not sure, but where I am currently is some fluctuation)

This might be the first time in over a decade I've seen vim recommended for something and not agreed.
-1. As a vim advocate who uses it for literally everything (including composing this comment) I can't believe I'm saying this, but I cannot imagine vim being the best tool for the job to edit remote files on an iPad. The mode based interface is simply not touch screen friendly. Even with a vim friendly 'hacker' keyboard layout on my Android tablet, it's kind of a pain. — Caleb 2 mins ago

@Izzy Munich is great! Have an email? Then I send you my profile PDF.
@Caleb I know and was hesitating to recommend it either. But its there and the OP said he tries so maybe we are all wrong. I will give it a try on my IPad later... But I guess in the end of the day this will not be the accepted answer on this question.

11:20 AM
Oh man, now Sam isn't bugging me with psychologies anymore now hes bugging around with semantics. Someone interested in picking it up where I want to leave it?

@AngeloNeuschitzer cannot promise anything, but I can check. You know my username (before the AT), my prof domain is izzysoft DOT de :)

@Izzy Sie haben Post :)

11:39 AM
@AngeloNeuschitzer iPad Vim's today-update gives me a blackscreen, the crashtest is for later ; )

@Fractaliste :) Okay. I'll try it tomorrow on my IPad, I got curious :)
@Caleb What an answer! softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/a/1495/94 I sure hope we see more like them here!

@AngeloNeuschitzer link

@AngeloNeuschitzer I think it is unfortunate that the vast majority of answers we are seeing so far are just rehashes of Google searches for products that support x, y and z, add a screenshot copied from the product site and call it good. We should be considering the use case presented and making knowledgeable recommendations for solutions and WHY a certain package(s) are the best solution. If we don't get enough traction behind that concept this is going to be a sucky site (and I'll run far far away).

A: What are the pro and cons of allowing opinionable but useful questions?

Angelo Neuschitzer"mature" can be objectified. This word describes various elements of software (good documentation, few bugs and they are quickly closed, active development community, production readyness, etc.) If your question states what measurable elements of "mature" you are looking for then its good. The im...

@AngeloNeuschitzer GuckiGucki...

@kalina Thanks.

@AngeloNeuschitzer Wow. Without checking who posted it: Reaching 30% I'm pretty sure that must have been @Caleb. Profound, all background detailed. If something is missing in one of his answers, consider it a "draft" he for sure is updating later. thumbs up!

12:11 PM
@Izzy Yeah. We should all take him as an example and take a look if we can improve our answers to match his level. I will do so this weekend.

@AngeloNeuschitzer The draw-back of his completeness is the length of the answers sometimes :)

@Izzy Not a problem in my eyes. If I come here to get a Recommendation on what will help my problem than I'm willing to spend more than 10 minutes anyway.
Because else I would just have googled it.

@AngeloNeuschitzer I see you've been in finance as well, sounds good. Will check and forward your profile here. Would be great working together :)

@Izzy Yeah (been a while) but yes. I would totally like working with you!

@AngeloNeuschitzer No, of course not! It's just... erschlagend (first shock for length).

12:15 PM
@Izzy So, don't read past the first paragraph :) If the why stuff gets out of hand, I lead off with a summary or TLDR. It this case, the first five words answers the question.

@AngeloNeuschitzer You work via a contractor as well? Ya know, "big players" prefer "bulk orders" :)
@Caleb facepalm Forgive me, my attention was split, I forgot to mention that!

@Izzy As long as the contractor accepts that I'm a contractor myself that doesn't bother me at all.

@AngeloNeuschitzer No prob, that's how I work. So if you don't have a contractor currently, and it's OK with you, I forward that to mine to do the dealing?

@Izzy Splendid!

@AngeloNeuschitzer kk, will do :)
@AngeloNeuschitzer you might get contacted from within the Matrix soon :)

12:28 PM
@Izzy I keep my antennas open for any white rabbits passing my door :)

12:48 PM
@AngeloNeuschitzer Yupp :D Might not be Morpheus, though, but M*S matches (Marcus in this case)

Q: How should we treat questions about plugins and such "software-parts"?

MichelI made a "test-drive" question about plugins. But, how should we treat those kind of question, that doesn't ask for a application itself, just a dll or plugin like software?

1:24 PM
Really ? down vote (to reach 0 again?)

@Michel Someone seems to think that this question is not important.

@Michel I agree that your question is quite light, but it still interesting... I think that almost every developer have already wonder it

@Fractaliste Sure thing.
@AngeloNeuschitzer I don't agree with those kind of down-votes
The comment explain that i didn't "try"

@Michel They are the the common way in meta. Votes are different on meta then on the main site.
Downvoting a question denotes it as "not important" (for whatever reason)

but ... I did, and I showed in the question that. Also, I linked the meta post about it. And the guy just link me a "google-like-link-answer" and down-vote.
Ok down-vote, but ... this kind of question will be recurring on the SRSE
~kinda angry ... hate down-votes
I make an enforce to build a quality and acceptable Q&A
So I don't get 'downs'. BUT, if I got down-votes I think "This Q&A sucks, I should just delete it"
But, as @Fractaliste states, this IS a useful question ... What is making me angry is "Here is a list, I'll post as a comment so I don't lose my rep."
@AngeloNeuschitzer I know >.<

Why some questions have blue-background? Do you know what it means?

PS: I'm talking about this question

Q: Auto Indentation in Notepad++

MichelI'm looking for a plugging that can Indent code (html, css, php, asp, etc...) in the Notepad++ Requeriments Work with Notepad++ Windows 7+ Must implement shortcut for it No too much "heavy" (not more that the notepad++ itself) Optional May have other features Able to define how to indent ...

not the meta one
@Fractaliste link?

@Fractaliste It's because the question has a tag that you have marked it your favorites list.

Thanks, I didn't know it

@Fractaliste In your case you have favorited so all questions with that tag get highlighted for you.

1:45 PM
@Fractaliste each site has your own color. But is as @Caleb said.
AND, you Mr. @Caleb Explain the link -_-

@AngeloNeuschitzer Can't check that (Firewall), but just got a call. You're next to get one :)

80% of the questions on the site doesn't have "I tried the X and Y" nor similar things. so why the "what have you tried" thing, we are not at SO. (Ok, I know that this rule apply in most(all?) SE sites -_- just making a emphases here)

@Michel I think you are confused about A) who voted for what and B) why and what votes mean anyway. I DVed your question on main but not your one on meta. The one on main is useful (or would be if it wasn't basically a duplicate of two others) but your one an main did not show much research. It's not a matter of importance, it's a matter of you don't seem to have even referenced the available materials (list of available plugins) so answers would just be a rehash of existing materiel.

@Caleb really, I want to understand, so I can't make the same mistake again, and I can delete the question without regreat

If you hover over questions that is one of the suggested DV reasons.

1:48 PM
DV ?
Ahh

@Michel downvotes on Meta sites don't eat your rep. Votes there rather count as like/dislike, agree/disagree, etc, without "rating" (though that might be a side-effect).

@Caleb "The one in main is useful" "your one an main"?

I saw the link from bot and asked why dv
I don't mind the Meta question, I was the one who flagged to close it as dup.

@Izzy Got it. Thanks man that would be awesome!

@Izzy Also, the problem is not rep here, it's that I down understand the dv

1:52 PM
@Michel As I wrote, on Meta it can be as simple as "I don't share this opinion".
@AngeloNeuschitzer Yeah, I emphasized this in my talk with Marcus :) He'd said to give you a call today, so keep your phone close to you :)

@Izzy It already happened :)

@Caleb Maybe you could link the "possible duplicates" to the comments of the Q on main?
@AngeloNeuschitzer Ah! So did you like each other?
Impressions?

@Braiam Ya sorry. I'm still half way through teaching myself DVORAK and my writing is an abomination as a result.

@Caleb Welcome to the club (of DVORAK users)!

2:24 PM
@Michel If you want to improve your post about Notepad++ indentation you could ask for a cleaner plugin rather an auto-indentation one. Auto-indentation is included into the "cleaner" needs, but there it contains other interesting things like useless line deletion, ...

2:50 PM
@Fractaliste Could you help me out with that ?

3:12 PM
Well, there we go: Here I am, and now I can approve wiki-edits again :) 1.5k border taken :)

I couldn't resist and had to post a lengthy answer to Sams post despite my better judgment. Would you have a look and ensure that I didn't treat him unfairly? meta.softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/601/…

@AngeloNeuschitzer you may want to add a single space between code blocks or use backticks so the numeration doesn't mess up

@Braiam Thanks

@AngeloNeuschitzer I can't edit meta but here is some drop in replacement markdown for your list: pastebin.com/1mLxWpWT

nah, he used backticks instead
> real man use backticks

3:23 PM
NOT WHEN IT'S NOT CODE!
See my solution for prettier (and more semantically correct) formatting.
slaps @Braiam with a wet trout for using backtics where they don't belong.

@Caleb Thank you, I wanted to do it this way but couldn't get it working.

@AngeloNeuschitzer I guess we can give @Braiam back his head :P
Gah ... this chat tries to emulate IRC in some ways but fails. <gives up>

@Caleb It does? It doesn't even support /me -> that doesn't feel like irc ;)

We just got a migration :P

@Undo We get migrations already? Oh noes...

3:35 PM
I don't think we're supposed to be getting migrations from graduated sites.

@Undo Then how did that happen?

I dunno
Mods can migrate anywhere, but IIRC you aren't supposed to migrate from graduated to beta.

@Undo maybe it was a test-balloon :)

uh-oh :P

@Caleb this is one of my pet hates as well

3:40 PM
@Undo Huh? I thought migration only works to graduated sites?

@Izzy No, diamond mods can migrate anywhere.
But IIRC this is how it's supposed to work:
- beta <-> beta
- beta -> graduated
- graduated <-> graduated

@Undo They can is one thing, but as @Undo already wrote, they're not supposed to AFAIK.

ARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!
> migrated from webmasters.stackexchange.com 12 mins ago

I thought beta-sites should never receive migrations? Hm, maybe I got that wrong.

JUST WHAT FREAKING!

3:42 PM
@Izzy No, just never from graduated sites.
On Space we migrate to and from Astro all the time
@Braiam Yeah, kinda maddening, right?
And this is only a peek at things to come

@Izzy Not really. It's not supposed to be normative for all questions (ergo no migration path by default), but if a question is truly off topic and getting closed AND it it topical for a beta AND actually a good question, migrating is at left as a discretionary option for mods.

oh, ok

I would reject it, by closing it :P
in Webmasters, 2 days ago, by John Conde
The Software Recommendation site is now in public beta. All software recommendation questions will now be migrated there. If you see a new software recommendation question please flag it for migration. Please do not flag old questions as they are not allowed to be migrated.
^ this is bad... very bad...

oh dear
We need mods like now
Ideally Gilles as one of them so that he can go tell the others to not send us junk

now to see if I can word my SR question...

3:48 PM
@Caleb OK, that sounds reasonable. Still, as we hold it on Android Enthusiasts: migration should only be proposed by members active on the target site (to ensure it meets the target site's criteria).
He, that one was a good case for my canned-responses script :)
@Braiam =:-0
"All software recommendation questions will now be migrated there."
Are they nuts?

faints

(Sorry)
(someone please shoot them (soft recommendation))

well... we sure took over their chatroom :P

@Undo Not me!

okay, am going to ask here, are questions asking for a suitable software gem for sending data from an image sensor to an excel spreadsheet even be remotely on topic?

3:50 PM
@Izzy Outsider
@Amaterasu By "Gem" you mean library?

@Amaterasu I would say yes, but that's just my opinion.

Well now that we have all ganged up on poor John....

now lets retreat!

We kinda needed to :P
Otherwise they were going to smash our site.

@Undo library, program, algorithm...something

3:51 PM
@Amaterasu If you keep to the guidelines, library questions are on topic here.

@Izzy Yes that is a good idea. People shouldn't be flagging to get rid of a question if they aren't going to be the ones dealing with it on the other end.

@AngeloNeuschitzer now to word it to reveal my diabolical lack of intelligence

btw, why it isn't closed?

we need one more vote

@Braiam It is. (ala @Gilles)

3:53 PM
<--- needs 36 more rep D:

I just sent a message to the webmasters mods in the mod chat room telling them not to migrate anything until they get a green light

okay, let me try writing a post .

@Amaterasu You can always check our criteria here: What is required for a question to contain "enough information"?

So, I'm off for today. See ya tomorrow (and write an email if an urgent vote is needed :))

hehe, okay @AngeloNeuschitzer

3:56 PM
When unsure (e.g. "almost matches"), you can also simply point to that link, and ask the user to re-ask on SR considering the criteria pointed out.

okay, here goes...

@Caleb Good point. My point was just "if they don't know the target site might consider it crap/OT/unfitting". Otherwise it's like "...they don't know what they're doing".
And we are no gods to "forgive them" #D

solution: we just migrate our bad questions back over to their site
(that was a joke)

@Amaterasu Maybe you should update that "rule" mentioned above with that link :)
@kalina Oooh. And I thought we'd have some real fun...

@Izzy huh?

4:00 PM
@Amaterasu I mean this one: "All software recommendation questions will now be migrated there."
Um... forgive me not having asked first: Which site from?
Webmasters?

I am thinking posting a new post on here

@Izzy yeah

@Izzy you are mixing up topics :/

@Amaterasu Apologies! Coincidence in time. Someone just posted that from webmasters, and your migration question came up close after that :blush:

@Gilles Done. And updated all "answers" where profiles have been missing. Looks a bit more unique now. (was tempted to put mine somewhere – but resisted, as I didn't want to be guilty for "ruining another's chances" #D)

@Izzy did my question, nervous about it though

@Izzy I really would like Caleb aboard because he has a proven track record. But everyone has to start somewhere! It's good to have a mix of experienced people and fresh eyes.

IIRC one of the SE staff said he tried to find something like “one SE expert, one topic expert, and one wildcard” (not quoting exact words)
I don't know if that reflects actual practice, I've never figured out what goes into mod selection
Don't worry about “ruining another's chances”, there's a good chance that we'll start with 4 or 5 mods (it's happened before on sites that were predicted to require more than the usual amount of moderation)

I am tempted to delete my question

@Amaterasu At least some updates are required: what phone (OS)? Are you going to "remove SDCard, put into laptop, ..."? Or should it work while the card is still inside the device?
@Gilles That's the point why I upvoted him! Btw: Are you decided meanwhile? Your nomination still lacks an "accept" or "decline".
@Gilles At least nobody can ruin mine, as I've not been nominated #D

5:08 PM
@Amaterasu Don't, but please clarify (I left a comment)

@Amaterasu And as you're here, I rather leave the pointer here than on your question: Good thing to check against is What is required for a question to contain "enough information"?

@Izzy conditional accept, I've just edited

@Gilles checking...
Umpf. After Caleb's edit I want to upvote him one more time...
And looks like most agree we definitely need more than 3 mods (so do I; with 5+ I'd even consider putting myself up for nomination)

@Gilles nope, I talked with a CM and they said we'll probably start out with the "usual compliment" of mods.
And add more as need be.

5:25 PM
@Undo That would mean two of the best candidates will decline.
(note: "best" was not meant in the sense of "most upvoted" ;)

I don't think we need five mods. Maybe four, but if we get three good ones we can handle it.

@Izzy Alright, I'll nominate you.

Grrr I was just thinking up a good nomination.

goes to meta

@Seth Ugh...

@Undo Or you can do it if you want.

No, you can.
on Astro we nominated the same person three times within a ten-minute window accidently :P

:)

@Undo hehe

@Izzy yeah, we deleted two of them. Making sure to coordinate the deletions

OK, I'm AFK for a while (going home, maybe picking up some stuff on the way...)

git really isn't as scary as it sounds. Bazzar on the other hand.. well anyway. — Seth 1 min ago
@Seth Backstory?
I came at bzr sideways having some git experience but needing to contribute to somebody elses project for a while. I found the patterns a little odd (git habits?) and never really mastered it, but that is probably because I never had to admin it, only used it a little. I didn't find it that scary, but I'd be interested in hearing a contrary opinion.

Epic!

@AngeloNeuschitzer That seemed pretty specific. I'm fine with it. We should warn them, but if they have stuff that good we should get one of their mods in here so we can give thumbs up or down before migration.

@Caleb Yes. Good idea.

7:31 PM
@Braiam I'll ping WE in the mod room and make sure he saw the last warning.

They should send something to all the mods on all tech-like sites that says "ASK US BEFORE MIGRATING TO SR!!! >:("

@AngeloNeuschitzer That one doesn't seem too bad.

@Seth that would imply that 95% of the internet is worth caring about

@Undo It's been plastered all over the Teachers Lounge where all mods are supposed to hang out at least occasionally and several broadcast messages have gone out to the mods of tech sites. Even mods take some educating and there are hundreds of them.

@Gilles Nah. You forgot the purging routine. He didn't say "95% in on one end, and 95% clean out on the other". I'm pretty sure he was aware that while those 95% get "sucked in", only about 15% make it through.
Wow! Congrats @Gilles & @Undo! Long live our new mods!

nah

All the sites seem to use IM for only Internet-based messages, and SMS for the phone network messages

if someone needs something related to SMS, we could create a SMS tag

How about just renaming but not keeping the synonym?

@Gilles That's also how I understand it. SMS are rather "offline communication", btw.
I mean, if the "other end" had switched off the phone, the SMS would be delivered later. And "instant coffee" is not to be consumed cold :)

8:34 PM
@Gilles before killing off that tag Q, can you create all the synonyms agreed in it?

@kalina I'm going through the list at the moment
it's slow going because I check the tag names on other sites, and sometimes I hesitate
I don't bother creating tag synonyms just for fun, only if the name is likely to come up
for example I don't see the point of : surely is enough?

we had a kids tag

yes

it got renamed to children
everything in that post is based on past experience from this site

@Undo can you check out the latest migrations to the site in the mod tools?

8:38 PM
@Braiam Yep. Just the ones from P.SE and Webmasters.

okidoki

since there's a consensus that = , I merged them
Yell if you want the opposite direction
Unyell if you like the direction I picked

silent yelp

gulp

8:55 PM
@Gilles you need to get @Undo to approve your tags synonyms suggestion

What do I need to do?

the ones that has "pending (0)" in this list softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/tags/…

@Braiam I can do it myself... It's just that sometimes it's easier to suggest synonyms through one interface and then mass-merge them
I'm almost through the list, then I can do the mass merge

@Gilles I think they should be the other way around, btw

All done
except for the ones where it wasn't clear, for these I left a comment suggesting to start a new thread

9:26 PM
@Gilles @Undo Congrats!

@Izzy @Gilles nevermind...
@Undo the question was not okay after all

@AngeloNeuschitzer Thanks!

@Gilles I delete the As on "Tag syns and merges" that are fully addressed, yes?

@AngeloNeuschitzer you can keep them. The question's closed now.
We're just keeping it around as a historical record
maybe we can delete it once we're sure there's no follow-up needed

@Izzy @Gilles @undo - sorry for wasting your time - i have removed my account - i'll research my question elsewhere

9:37 PM
@Amaterasu You aren't wasting our time, not at all :)

9:58 PM
You wasted our time? It's our free* decision to help you. And there's no need removing your account, you might need it later!
* free as in "free speech", though we don't mind a "free beer" either :)

CompukidThere is an application by MIT called Scratch, which works by dragging and dropping commands into a script which can make the program move sprites (characters and objects), preform calculations, and change appearance. You can download it here.

^ Is that VLQ?
I lean towards yes, but input?

@Undo there's a comment since old times and OP hasn't corrected it
