12:00 AM
Does that work well?

i couldn't be happier with the load times. Its really reduced a major portion of our infrastructure needs.

I'm considering using S3 sometime down the road for static files (in conjunction with CloudFront).

I'm trying to convince them to throw our static landing pages on S3, we'd save a herd in bandwidth costs

Are response times pretty good around the globe?

we deal mainly with North America, but I have some call center business going on in the phillipines and yeah, they haven't reported any issues

12:02 AM
Sounds pretty good.

thats not a fair shake though... only the javascript gets loaded from CDN over there with that particular flavor of my software.

Is there a real name policy in the Ubuntu community? http://askubuntu.com/questions/112434/is-there-a-real-name-policy-in-the-ubuntu-community?atw=1 #community

Well, at this point it's mostly JavaScript I'm concerned about.
I may move some images over too, but...

you wont have any issues

And they provide an API for storing / retrieving content, right?

12:04 AM
Indeed they do
I use cloudberry for the most part, but they do have a tool kit / SDK for everything they offer.
AWS is a really nice suite for infrastructure in the cloud
just beware of the EC2 Roulette when you get into dedicated processing space - i've had two instances enter a "degraded state" where they at random decide to stop responding and just sit there like a derp -- if you make nightly snapshots you should be fine though, just convert the snapshot into an AMI and re reploy it. unhook the dirty instance from the elastic ip, join the new one and you're good to go.
total time to redeploy a server is about 3 minutes if its scripted.

Yeah - Juju will really make this awesome.
Once the Juju store goes live, then it will be really easy to deploy services to the cloud.

So i've been reading in here, jorge has been head over heals with it for a week now :)
I'm jelly, i wont lie. Chef is fun - since i have to support win2k8 servers all day - so it makes juju more appealing but less feesable of a solution.

I need to hurry up and write that GUI :P

in response to your load time question - its comparable with Google and Optimizely CDN's
mind you, none of my scripts on this page are minified - which is a no no i know :| blame the old deploy scripts.

Hmmm... looks pretty good.

12:12 AM
hmm... xubuntu does not give me the ability to change system colors like lubuntu did : (
nothing
i installed lxappearance but that changed noting
i also tried opening my theme's rc file but there is no color info in there

And Firefox 11 has landed - now with a 3D DOM inspector:

Whattt?
a 3d dom inspector? that is neat.

It's going to be wonderful for debugging DOM hierarchy issues.

Indeed
I've grown accustomed to chromes dev kit though

Yeah - I always install Firebug in Firefox simply because it provides a lot of the same functionality as the WebKit inspector.

1 hour later…
jrg
1:25 AM
I <3 chrome dev tools.

I did too until Chrome stopped working.

wait, chrome stopped working?

jrg
Hey George, how difficult would it be to make a chrome extension that grabs a div from a page every X minutes and displays the content in a notification?

using marco's libnotify probably not hard

jrg
(don't make it, I'm just curious)

1:34 AM
window.setTimeout(function() { grab some div }, 500000);

Hello
Tonight I;m going to learn PHP.

Thats a good idea.. i want some za
brb

1:43 AM
@lazyPower Yeah, Chrome just freezes every time I start it now - even after a clean install.
@jrg Not too hard. Most of the work is setting up the manifest.json file, housecleaning, etc.

@jrg there's a NPAPI that @GeorgeEdison wrote, but it's not updated to run on the latest Ubuntu

jrg
I don't care if its a notify-osd or not, I just want a webkit notification

@MarcoCeppi That's because Firebreath made some changes to their API.
...so I'd have to essentially write it again from scratch.

@GeorgeEdison right
shrug

jrg
Ok, thanks - i'll figure out how to do it later, since i'm really itching for a extension to notify me about suggested edits. :p

1:45 AM
Maybe I'll take a stab at it in a few weeks

I'll help wherever I can. It's just that it took so much time last time (I had to set up CMake, etc).

jrg
We're talking about two different things now aren't we. :p

@jrg It's pretty straight forward, you just inject some javascript on the page (or override the Ajax method) to capture any changes and trigger the notify box
Learning how to inject javascript and not create mayhem is where it gets interesting :)

jrg
Sweet.

@MarcoCeppi ...and not create a security vulnerability.

1:47 AM
@jrg Here's the code for Chromify's extension: bazaar.launchpad.net/~chromify-osd-team/chromify-osd/trunk/…

jrg
Ok, i'll start looking there.

...and of course, Stack Alert is completely open-source (look in the chrome/ folder for Chrome specific files).

2:04 AM
PHP is awesome.

What are you writing?

ClassLibrary 3.0
writing it from scratch

What pattern are you using?

2:22 AM
Pattern?

Like MVC (Model-View-Controller), for example.
The MVC pattern abstracts the code performing "actions" from the code rendering pages and the code dealing with the database.

Umm.... you lost me.
I am just starting learning PHP tonight.
Youtube tutorials are gifts from God.

Okay, well in that case I would suggest starting with something a little bit simpler for a first project.
Rewriting your ClassLibrary should probably wait until you have a better grasp of the language.

Yeah - I have 3 months to re-write it.
I don't know of a better alternative.
Even though ASP.Net is an option

If you're not sold on PHP yet, might I suggest trying Django?
It's a Python framework that is awesome.

2:31 AM
Ill have to do some research.
My objective:
Walled Garden (require login to see any page)
Keep it simple stupid - both in coding and in interface
feed-style chat
similar to the stack exchange site
allow voting up and down of chat messages
after a post get -2 automatic deletion
have a "dawer" - drag messages there to save them for later

those are my main criteria

That sounds like something Django could handle.
It comes with a built in admin site that allows you to edit user permissions, etc.
It's really easy to work with.

OK
I will look into it.
Thanks :)
hmm
all I have is ftp access to the server
not sure if I can install it

Hmmm... what version of Python is running on the server?

I have no idea.

Q: How do I customise Ubiquity?

jasoncruz98If I want to create a remastered Ubuntu, how do I edit Ubiquity so that when my friends boot up from my live cd iso they will see something like "Welcome to Jason OS!" I also want my custom Ubiquity to have my own slideshow and my own information about my remastered Ubuntu. Is this possible?

Dangit, my alarm didn't go off reminding me it was this week. Congrats @jokerdino, sorry I wasnt able to make it.

to make room for ubuntu I want to tar my windows c partition and reformat the whole disk
is that possible?
just tar the windows partition and the mbr partition
and then reformat everything and add new partitions
install ubuntu
then untar windows in the second partition and reinsert the mbr partition
sound good?

Oli
@JoshuaRobison No you'll not be able to save your MBR that way.

@Oli, how can i save the mbr?

Oli
Why not do what everybody else does? Resize Windows down, install Ubuntu alongside. I think the installer can do that on its own.

if I break the mbr cant i fix it?

Oli
11:17 AM
@JoshuaRobison Yeah

gparted isnt resizing it
for whatever reason
booted into a live usb of course

Oli
You'd probably do well to find out why it's not resizing. Gparted does give error messages.

@Oli, yea, i dont have access to it right now so cant explain the error but gparted wouldnt work
i use gparted often and resize partitions all the time with it
was really surprized that it would not work but ... it wouldnt
lets say that the only option i had was to reformat
how would I do that?
tar is enough right?
as long as I get the windows and mbr partiitions and then make sure to put windows on the second paritition ...

Oli
When NTFS is involved it's usually because you've had a clean dismount. Booting and shutting down Windows two or three of times is usually enough to fix that.
The MBR is not a partition. You're not going to be able to save that. You want Grub to replace it.

@Oli i see, so I dont need mbr?
i can just plop windows on sda2 and im set?

Oli
11:23 AM
You need a MBR but if you go through the installer properly, grub will replace the Windows bootloader (in the MBR) and should set things up to chainload. This is why I suggest you investigate to see why gparted can't resize your Windows disk.

hmm ... ok
thanks oli
gotta research some more i guess

11:43 AM
@jrg it's cool man. I am happy to have made it!

jrg
@jokerdino :D
parties over folks, although i don't think it really started... ;)

Q: Why is full-scene anti-aliasing (FSAA) not working for Intel HD 3000 graphics?

neoAccording to specs, Intel HD 3000 graphics supports FSAA. But whenever I enable it in a game it crashes immediately. Games using LWJGL throw this error: org.lwjgl.LWJGLException: Could not choose GLX13 config Is this a driver issue and if yes, when will it be fixed?

Dis a bug report?

@jrg Try to have 16 work hour days only with tea and will go RAAAAGE MODE on the first person that calls your by your name on the way to the door that leaves to your car that will get you home where you can eat and sleep and forget about the crappy day you had because you had no coffee what so ever.

anyone good with twitter bootstrap and can quickly pump out some form html for me :P:P

@BrunoPereira quitting smoking and coffee at the same time is a bad idea..
I feel sorry for your wife and kids :P

@rlemon Dont miss smoking that much, only when people talk about it... Oh crap: now look what you have done! Goes to the car to grab a smoke!
(kidding)

@BrunoPereira good on you! I would opt to quit coffee before the latter.
but that is only because coffee is less addicting for me (and I don't mind tea)
right now roll-up the rim is on so i'm full on into the coffee (if you're not Canadian you won't understand Tim Hortons or Rollup the rim)
Tim Hortons Inc. (, ) is a Canadian fast casual restaurant known for its coffee and doughnuts. It is also Canada's largest fast food service with over 3000 stores nationwide. It was founded in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario, by Canadian hockey player Tim Horton and Jim Charade (1934-2009), after an initial venture in hamburger restaurants. In 1967 Horton partnered with investor Ron Joyce, who assumed control over operations after Tim Horton died in a car crash in 1974, and expanded the chain into a multi-million dollar franchise. Jim Charade left the organization in 1966 and briefly returned ...

@rlemon I have a big ass Italian espresso machine at home, takes 5 mins just warm up, what would I do with it if I really stopped drinking coffee? ;)

@BrunoPereira turn it into a big ass Italian door stop.

or cement shoes and it can sleep with the fishes.. but that is only assuming you are also Italian... I know how you guys deal with your own kind.

youch, just realized that amazon s3 is going to cost gulp money. I'm a cheapskate, what can I say.

ohhhhhh, you realize that you just compared all Italians to mobsters right? (I am Portuguese btw)

yeah, when in reality all italians are like mario and luigi! :D

1:32 PM
I feel so bored.
Suddenly nothing feels interesting anymore.
lol @htorque, I think I know your country \o/

do you know my country or where my ip address is coming from? ;)

I think the latter, but highly likely it is the first one too :D

who knows (well, i do :D)

hah :D

man, i can't figure out where the memory leaks. this is so stupid.
no application programmer should be forced to do memory management!

I find your statement ironical.
never mind that .
