Q: The closure of "Looking for First Person, Physics based, Puzzle games"

FlykI'm not convinced that this question should have been closed: Looking for First Person, Physics based, Puzzle games From what I see, two reasons have been given from Caleb and Gilles: Too broad No purpose Too broad The question had an initial burst of answers (only seven of them, mind you) ...

@Undo No, not me, don't even think about it. :P

@Undo Did it speak of diamonds in the plural? And sure that's not the "standard text" like "more when needed"?

@Braiam: oh, I was thinking SU in the early days, and I suspect SR might be almost as big as, and trickier than SU ;p

@JourneymanGeek You might be right with that!

12:04 AM
@Izzy: wide topic, narrowed scope, and we're likely to get a ton of migrations from elsewhere

@kalina

quite a lot of them crap ;p

@Bernhard 'sup?

@kalina I agree with this post

@Izzy it wasn't standard text, no. It said they were nominating us, with the intention of bringing more people "soon"

12:04 AM
@Bernhard upvote it then :P

sorry, pressed some button to quick

@JourneymanGeek we already got 2

@Bernhard upvote on meta = "I agree"

@Braiam: yeah, but we're still in beta

12:05 AM
@kalina That's why I did that ;)

@JourneymanGeek Yupp. Started today.

oic

and we've no spam yet ;p

@JourneymanGeek "yet"

@Undo ^^ Confirm?

12:05 AM
yet.

@JourneymanGeek that's the amusing thing...

@Undo Ah, OK – right, "soon" is not standard, that's quite specific. Let's see what comes.

@hichris123 kinda hard to confirm. Just about all the link-only answers here could be considered spam, so...
but I haven't seen anything nuked as spam.

:P
BURN THEM!!!!

@Undo: There's a few common classes of spammers - On SU, I tend to be suspicious of questions to do with outlook, ipods and file repartitioning tools for example.

12:08 AM
@Undo how do you want to handle comments that say "please explain the downvote"
can I flag those as obsolete?

@JourneymanGeek Don't forget the "data recovery" posts on ASE... (which are not seldom for iPhones even)

@kalina not constructive is what I've been told in the past.

what about "I'll try this tomorrow" comments?

Hmmm
I suppose they could be obsolete

@kalina Delete the day after?

12:10 AM
@kalina if it is two days after "tomorrow" is obsolete :P

@Braiam Exactly #D

hey I'm just asking so I don't get a bunch of declined flags
I don't have a flag weight of 100 yet
so it matters

yeah, if it's past tomorrow they're obsolete. Right @Gilles?

OK, 1am here, wish you a good day|night|morning|afternoon (pick whatever fits your timezone ;)

@Izzy Cya!

12:14 AM
good night then @Izzy

night @Izzy

@kalina generally, if a comment is intended as an acknowledgement to another comment, I check if the other guy has logged in and delete then.

@Gilles ok cool
in this instance the person in question has actually responded saying they've tried it

a comment like “I'll try this” on an answer is kinda useless in the first place

yeah

12:18 AM
@Gilles and @Undo Congratulations and thanks for taking up the PT posts :D

@Gilles your response to my question on meta basically makes all game recommendations off topic
and the community has already decided that game recommendations are not off topic

@NickWilde No problem!

All game recommendations will have the purpose of "I'm looking for a game that does X"
I have put this in a comment on your answer and I implore you to reconsider your position

@kalina game recommendations are not intrinsically off-topic, but they still have to abide by the rules: being a game doesn't give you a free pass
right there in the most upvoted answer

1 min ago, by kalina
All game recommendations will have the purpose of "I'm looking for a game that does X"

12:20 AM
that's not a purpose

And as such, you're saying all game recommendations are off topic

I expect that most game recommendations will be unsuitable because of the lack of purpose

All game recommendations will lack a purpose with your definition

but there are exceptions, such as educational games

@Gilles Mm... why does it being educational make it have a purpose?

12:22 AM
@hichris123 when the purpose is to educate

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you
Within a few hours of becoming a mod here you've destroyed my primary reason for being here

Hypothetically, my purpose could be to 'have fun'. Right?

@Gilles Meh, then regular games are on-topic by that.
^^ That

@Undo, that were also my thoughts, but "fun" is rather ill-defined

@Bernhard "Fun" is clearly defined if you're asking for a game that is a puzzle based first person shooter with physics mechanics

12:24 AM
@Undo we've also discussed that on meta. The problem is that “have fun” is intrinsically subjective

true

This is what I mean: the purpose is based on the requirements in the question
This question wants physics based puzzle games
Thus the purpose = fun, defined as games which contain physics based puzzles

@Gilles @kalina I recommend leave this conversation for a while to see other POV's

The other point of views have already been discussed, game recs are on topic according to community consensus and @Gilles is overriding community consensus

ok, but Gilles hasn't closed all game questions, lets see what thinks others about closing that question
right now it seems kalina vs Gilles kind of thing and I don't think it will work out

12:29 AM
@kalina straw man. I didn't close this question because it's a game question. I closed it because it fails our quality guidelines in a way that makes it a bad fit for SE.

Ahoyyyy~

Oy @Hiroto

@Gilles It doesn't fail them, though.

@kalina For the last time: it does. I explained that in my answer.

@Gilles You explained your point of view in the answer, without taking into consideration anybody elses

12:31 AM
@Braiam: While it dosen't meet your needs exactly, ttrss is worth trying ;p

I've already gone on to explain "the purpose", which is your primary argument against the question

(ok, mainly cause no one's made a RSS feed reader as awesome as akregator)

in other news: I thought we agreed that we were deleting answers that didn't answer the question?

@kalina If you're talking about that one declined flag, it was me

that I am

12:34 AM
Where have we said we delete incorrect answers?

the question states "I want open source"
the answer says "this is not open source"
thus - it doesn't answer the question

Yes, that's a case for downvotes.

ok cool

Yup ;)

I'm filling some meta-Q's of important things that we might want flesh out too

12:36 AM
@Gilles basically, you want to close (and subsequently delete) about 60% of my contributions to the site
according to this meta post

@kalina I don't discriminate on the poster

Oh, I'm not saying you are
I'm just saying let's just get it out of the way now so I know whether or not I'm wasting my time here

@kalina How would you interpret this form Grace Note's answer:
> What we're constructing is a haven for people that have something they need to get done, to find software that does that for them. We aim for those who can scope their needs to a nice set of features, but at the top level, the point is to enable someone to complete a particular task or job.

We focus on that, we knock off a good portion of game-related recommendation questions - boredom and personal desire aren't problems that we solve here.

I reiterated that when I was contacted in email asking whether I'd be a moderator.
So everybody knows where they stand, not least SE staff.

12:40 AM
@Caleb I interpret it as not the top voted answer
Listen; I feel it's a bit of a waste after the amount of effort I've already put in, but I know I'm not the only person who has put effort in
I want this to be as undramatic as possible
Take a look at the game rec content I've posted

@Gilles I definitely agree this site need to have fairly heavy-handed moderator action

Tell me if you're going to close it and/or close it now
And if we're going down the route of 99% of game recs being off topic, I will go quietly
I've stated my point of view, and game recs are pretty much the reason I'm here
so if they're off topic, there isn't much reason in me continuing

@kalina I personally see game recs as not off topic if they are quite narrowly defined; unfortunately most people won't be able to /want to narrowly define since their search isn't actually narrow

@NickWilde this is all provoked by a narrowly defined game rec question being closed

actually both of those statements should be to both @Gilles and @kalina - and all the further statements that I make on the topic at least for the next 5 minutes
@kalina: this one right?

Q: Looking for First Person, Physics based, Puzzle games

OxinaboxI recently completed Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers, a Puzzle game, that revolves around it's physics engine. The main game mechanic is being able to slice various parts of the terrain and objects, and then drag and push them around to solve puzzles. For example in one of the levels you are c...

Q: How can I write several answers/recommendations for a single question?

BraiamSomeone asked a question, it has some kind of needs/requirements that are shared by two or less than 5 software I used and I'm capable of giving a well through recommendation. How I would go and write them all? Should I write only an answer per recommendation? Or several? Should I just add a note...

Q: Should I ask a new question when while testing a recommendation it doesn't fit some needs I discovered later on?

BraiamWhile testing some recommendations I noticed some problems intrinsically of the requirements of my question. I might need to add requirements, rewrite others or just remove them. The answers do meet my original requirements completely but I found out other problem unrelated to the tools which I a...

@Gilles that other title sucks... very hard

In that case I slightly agree that it is too braod (as you can see by my close vote); given the extreme number of games I think that games to have a similar number of good matches will have to be defined with more specificity than other types

@NickWilde Out of 100s of millions of games, 7 is not "too broad"

@kalina possibly but it is only with a few people looking at it

@kalina: reading that...

@Shog9 you know, you could say hi before relinking the same things that have already been linked ;)

@kalina & @Gilles I think that that particular question could be narrowed by making a few of the 'shoulds' into 'musts'

12:49 AM
@kalina Not hear to bullshit; I want the quotes read.
Those two quotes - from Tim and GraceNote - sum up the limitations that must apply to these sorts of questions.

@NickWilde Ultimately, the scope of the question isn't the problem

Don't re-hash a debate that's already played out on Meta. If you disagree, go to those meta posts and make your case.

@Shog9 That's all good, I've passed that stage already and I've asked for Gilles to clarify the status of the content I've posted in that category already
As mentioned: I'm pretty much here for the game recs, so if they're not allowed, I don't have a reason to remain here muckying up the place

@kalina If there's any chance that those two quotes don't make the answer to that obvious, take it to meta and explain why.
Don't turn this into something personal. It isn't.

@kalina wait a sec are you flyk on the main site?

12:51 AM
@Shog9 see ze last thing I said -.-
I'm not making it personal

@kalina See everything I've said in this room, ever.

I'm perfectly happy to just leave if I've misunderstood the scope
@NickWilde yes

grumble why are you different names different places </grumble>

@NickWilde because my chat account is linked to my Arqade account, and I'm kalina on Arqade

@kalina That's why the first thing I did here was to lay out the scope. It's pretty clear - either you understand it or you don't.

12:52 AM
ah well I see games as challenging but possible doable but high risk of miscommunications
and dissagreements

@Shog9 ok cool, so game recs are off topic and I merely got it all wrong... again.

@kalina if you can find a way to ask for a game recommendation in the same way you'd ask for any other software recommendation on the site, then they're on-topic. There's no special treatment for game recs.

@Shog9 The "purpose" of a game is "fun" as defined by the requirements listed in the question, in my opinion
I tried to explain that
since "purpose" seems to be the reason it was closed
if that is unacceptable, then it's unacceptable

I don't agree with that - that likes saying 'purpose' is getting a job done
which while yes it should be true

@NickWilde they have already decided every question requires a purpose
I am merely trying to explain how that purpose relates to game recs

12:56 AM
@kalina would you describe the purpose of a text editor as "fun"? The purpose of a compiler as "challenging"? The purpose of a vector drawing program as "frustrating"? Of course not - that would be silly. So don't try to pull that crap with games.

it doesn't answer the question of what the purpose is very well

You either have a specific purpose, a specific problem you're trying to solve, or you don't have a question for this site.
2

@Shog9 with all due respect, I'm not trying "to pull that crap"

@Shog9 at risk of sounding prissy using language like that is not actually helpful for establishing anything but discord

@kalina yes, you are. You've tried to push "fun" as the criteria here half a dozen times already.

12:56 AM
In my mind, it's a valid explanation

@kalina it's not.

no - I've tried to push for "fun" when clearly defined as a valid criteria

If you disagree, then go onto meta and explain why I'm wrong, why Tim's wrong, why GraceNote is wrong.

I don't think it is a valid explanation and I think that's the consensus of the community as far as I've seen

@kalina "Fun" is a purely subjective thing that does not fit the good subjective bad subjective model. Now any specific game-recs that have criteria that can be met or not met and the community can judge whether they are a good solution to something definable would be welcome.
But most game recs are not going to be that. In most cases people aren't even wanting to find just one best answer, they want a list of popular ones which is what that question was devolving into.

1:00 AM
@NickWilde sorry - not trying to be overly-harsh here, but I am adamant that this discussion happen on Meta, calmly, where the rest of the community can read disparate opinions and chime in - not here in chat, twisted into some "you're driving me off the site" emotional argument.

@Caleb I totally get that "fun" is subjective
I purposely wanted to avoid using that word because as somebody who has used SE for 2 years I know it triggers alarms
The point I was putting forward is that fun, in the instances we're discussing, is well defined and therefore could possibly be seen as not so subjective
Kind of like how we deal with "best"
I wasn't trying to start another war
@Shog9 you've completely misunderstood me
again, I'll add
21 mins ago, by kalina
I want this to be as undramatic as possible
see that ^

actions, not words

I am not being emotional

@kalina you deal with "best" by pretending it doesn't exist - it adds nothing to the criteria for a question. If you propose to deal with "fun" in the same way, then you're back to not having a criteria at all.

@kalina Then make that case on the meta question where the other posts are.

1:03 AM
@Caleb I'm not sure there is a point? (I know you're all going to misinterpret this as well -.-)
I voiced my opinion and I have a bunch of drop in blues and Josh in here getting awfully defensive at me

@kalina if I'm misunderstanding you, then don't hesitate to correct me - pleae enter correction in the space provided

Now, the meta post(s) in question were posted in the days before I arrived here, which is why I am nowhere to be seen on them

@kalina "(I know you're all going to misinterpret this as well -.-)" that is not going to help consensus either

@NickWilde I have a loooooooong history with a few of these guys, I'm sure they're reading those particular words exactly as I mean thhem
If you have already hashed this all out to the point where my opinion results in shields up, I'm not sure me posting on meta is going to result in anything other than a massively downvoted post

1:05 AM
@kalina in the sense that I know from past experience that this conversation isn't going anywhere but a meta conversation might, you are correct.

@kalina There are multiple solid entries here saying that questions without hard edges and a problem to solve don't get a free pass just because they say game on them. If you think that 'fun' or other common game language meets that standard then onus is on you to add a post to the same set to make that case.

@Shog9 Being overly-harsh I'm not worried about but English is so nuance-able that it is better to be use words that are not very primed to cause gut reactions in many people

@NickWilde But I want a reaction. Riiiight here! ;-)

@kalina my shields aren't up - but so far you haven't convinced me

@Shog9 I am going to re-evaluate my position and if I still feel strongly that I want to take part in this site, I will write my point of view in a meta post just for you

1:07 AM
@kalina much obliged

@Shog9 makes sense
@kalina What I've seen of you on the other site I think you can make positive contributions to the community and I hope that you will feel still interested in participating and can write a post to convince us (I for one am totally open to being convinced)
Must go :wave:

@Shog9 Just please stop making the assumption I'm being emotional and unpredictable, I'm being perfectly reasonable
I don't make assumptions about you, extend the same courtesy.

@kalina those are largely orthogonal. You can make a perfectly reasonable argument that still appeals to emotion.

Not only did you use a word I don't know, but when I googled it, it's something to do with math

orthogonal axes: +
They may intersect but a point on one is unlikely to be on the other - orthogonal factors neither contradict nor confirm each other.

1:11 AM

everybody seems to jump to the conclusion that I'm throwing a tantrum when I'm merely struggling to communicate the mess of jumbled up words that make perfect sense to me but seem to confuse everybody else

@Braiam yes
Strictly-speaking, it is by design in that because moderator votes are binding, no comment-creation is intended.

I think a wider feature request asking that all closures result in an inbox notification would probably be better

ok, I was thinking that the message of "hey! your question has answers but they are [here]" would be seriously important for OP

@Braiam I'm guessing it's assumed that people can find their questions via /profile

Q: Send authors an inbox message if their question gets closed

TheLQI think it would really help if you get notified that a question of yours was closed. Especially for the multi-site power user, usually (at least for me) a question is asked and then left alone for while. I rely on the network-wide inbox to tell me when someone has commented or answered, but if ...

@Shog9 yeah, something like that would be far more obvious for some people

There are upsides and downsides. For duplicates, it's mostly positive. For, let's say, Too Opinion Based not so much.

It's not a feature that I personally would need, my content gets closed so infrequently that I notice if something I post gets downvoted or closed

for most close reasons people also comments

You know that removing all of my game rec posts will remove ~500 rep, I won't even be able to access half of the review queues

1:23 AM
@kalina: A good chunk of your arguement against it seems to be "I'll lose rep"

@JourneymanGeek A good chunk of my argument against it seems to be "I think they're on topic"
the rep is incidental
I am far more bothered about losing access to the review queues than losing the rep, I assure you
and as somebody who has chatted to me frequently, you know of my love for reviewing and editing all the things

oh hey, @Journeyman - get to Inbox Zero yet?

@Shog9: I don't believe in that. ;p

@JourneymanGeek it's easy: select all, delete.
but, uh, make sure you've at least read your email first.

1:28 AM
And, y'know, sent responses to anyone who might be urgently needing a reply.

@JourneymanGeek +facedesk

but yeah, then select all + delete.

you were obviously a little too subtle, @Shog9

I've been accused of this more than a few times
personality flaw

The problem is that you should give us some restrictions, "anything goes" or "too basic" requirements are no good since almost everything available would fit and the question would be "too broad". If you already had experiences with something write what you liked/didn't like as requirements of your question. Please be aware that we have strict quality controls and put in place very specifics rules to prevent things going out of control. — Braiam 5 mins ago
should be alright?

1:31 AM
you should link them to that awesome meta post Gilles and I wrote

it is, in my previous comment, mind you if he didn't read it :/

@Shog9: yeah, It was hidden under the hosting invoices, and other less important junk, at a filing cabinet, at the bottom of the stairs.... Let me reply, with something more dignified than oh hell yes ;p

@Amaterasu it got two upvotes
and my rm answer still gets upvotes D:

@Braiam Yup.

1:34 AM
@Braiam i have seen closed questions with upvotes
but the main thing is if itanswerable

@Braiam Doesn't sound like he has a specific problem to solve anyway. Just wanted a question related to his field out there.

@Amaterasu well, we are in beta, what did you expect when you put a bunch of mice, some cats, and a handful of dogs in a small box together?

@Braiam am not sure what you mean

Ok, replied. whoot

@Braiam nice
@Braiam 50% chance of them being dead when you open the box?

1:37 AM
@Amaterasu Probably (much improved question btw), but I'll be surprised if the answer is "hey this will work". You're going to have to get your hands dirty to wire it all up from little pieces.

@Amaterasu we are trying to manage a very difficult topic and do it the right way (tm)
some differences and closing, reopening, meta drama, etc. is bound to happen

@Braiam: either chaos, or they end up organising themselves into a near utopian society built on ideals like brotherhood, and not eating anyone until they are actually dead of natural causes.

@Gilles I was thinking that we would get the strongest poison, the Gu poison ;)

@Caleb oh I don't mind the wiring and juggling little pieces (I have an account at the local hardware and electronics stores)
as a possibly irrelevant aside, I am building a suntracker as well

scratch that, Gu poison needs the animals to be poisonous

1:40 AM
@Amaterasu: I wonder if you can break up that problem into smaller bits.

@JourneymanGeek the suntracker?

@Amaterasu closing an incomplete question, with comments saying what needs to be added, and reopening when the question has information, is a pretty normal workflow

no, the sensor data question
Does it need to be realtime?

it needs to be real time

@Amaterasu: that adds a new set of problems since you can't really 'reliably' send data from a file thats being constantly written to.

1:43 AM
a slight delay is fine...as would a direct transfer of the data directly to the laptop

eh. I wonder if you can get netcat to run on a phone...

what is netcat?

Netcat is a computer networking service for reading from and writing to network connections using TCP or UDP. Netcat is designed to be a dependable back-end that can be used directly or easily driven by other programs and scripts. At the same time, it is a feature-rich network debugging and investigation tool, since it can produce almost any kind of correlation its user could need and has a number of built-in capabilities. Netcat is often referred to as a "Swiss-army knife for TCP/IP". Its list of features includes port scanning, transferring files, and port listening, and it can be us...

@Amaterasu: unix tool for sending a stream of data from one system to another directly
of course, you really want to be using cryptcat

thatd work
cryptcat.... a cat locked away in a crypt somewhere?

1:45 AM
encrypted netcat

ahhh

So, you're basically going to have to run something like tail on your text file ... then pass it to netcat. Which may involve lots of hacking
The reason I asked about realtime is the alternative is what those car-cams do
basically rotate between text files, and sync up the latest text file as you go along.

that sounds feasible

(and sync tools should work on files that arn't being written to any more)
or you could run a web server where you're saving the files to, and pull the files from the phone with something like wget on the PC

@Braiam Done

1:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek never thought of that option!

@Amaterasu: This is why we have chat
sometimes, you don't always see all the options that are available ;p
another option, if you're a developer is to simply send the data over something like IRC or jabber in realtime...

Ahoy!

but I can't think of any existing product that would do it

I will stop greeting @GnomeSlice

@GnomeSlice ahoy!

1:51 AM
@GnomeSlice: AVAST! MAIN THE MANSAILS!

@JourneymanGeek I think you mixed those up.
@Braiam =[

@GnomeSlice: MAIN! AVAST MAN THESAILS!

yay! there are +250 reviews in the close queue of AU

@Braiam: softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/1449/… I would add 'able to hide empty feeds' - you'd be surprised how many RSS feed readers lack this ><

Just in case this comes as a surprise to... anybody... site first Outspoken badge.
