Q: How is the beta badge awarded?

ChenmunkaI know the Beta badge description states: Actively participated in the private beta However, what constitutes "Actively"? I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the 91 awarded, it just seems too few given the statistics on Area 51.

angelo can u test iy?

@AngeloNeuschitzer And you took that script from pastebin?
Which I posted before?

Toooooo loooooong :)

de.pastebin.de/40454

I'll try that, mom.

@danijelc Thanks – I just wanted to re-post it :)

2:01 PM
yeh i forgot to add link anyway

Nah, no "auto" for me.

for germans u guys have good english

The script that was on stackapps by (I forgot) worked though.
(Damn now I have to search this again)

please

2:02 PM
@danijelc Thanks, but most techy germans are quite fluent in english.

:)

I sometimes wonder what the native languages of the people here are anyway.

well i know a lot of Germans not fluent in english :0

@danijelc Techies?

<< Klingon

2:03 PM
techies too

Well, that stackapps thingy is what I took originally. But I tuned it a lot. Use it on Linux and Windows, with FF and Scriptish. works for me.

At least in comunication idk in writting

Minor update: pastebin.de/40459
Oh, Hi @TimPost :)

see Eng is my 3rd i do understand some DE but im far for communicating in DE

@danijelc Yeah, thats a huge difference. My spoken english is a lot worse than my written. (I mean, not surprisingly, I write in english a lot. But its too seldom that I meet someone to whom I can't speak german)
@Izzy Still nothing.

2:06 PM
Have you checked the error console?

@AngeloNeuschitzer yap exactly I god quite surprised when a German pronouncing is u know good
@Izzy here still dead too

Strg+Shift+K
Then reload the page

@danijelc In schooldays I could speak a little Serbocroatian (however thats written in english) but today its all gone.

brb

@Izzy did that, now I'm having a console. Should I tell you something from there?

2:09 PM
Are there any JavaScript errors showing up when you load the page?

It shows the following entries which do smell like errors:
[15:08:21.513] The connection to wss://qa.sockets.stackexchange.com/ was interrupted while the page was loading. @ cdn.sstatic.net/Js/full.en.js?v=8eacf8e9744c:16
[15:08:25.366] Use of getPreventDefault() is deprecated. Use defaultPrevented instead. @ ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.1/jquery.min.js:3

Yeah, that I get all the time #D

Expected 'important' but found 'ie7'. Expected ';' or '}' to terminate declaration but found 'ie7'. Declaration dropped. all.css:1
14:59:14.532 Error in parsing value for 'max-height'. Declaration dropped. all.css:1
14:59:14.532 Error in parsing value for 'display'. Declaration dropped. all.css:1
14:59:14.538 Unknown property 'zoom'. Declaration dropped. all.css:1
14:59:14.538 Unknown property 'ouline'. Declaration dropped.
kinda a lot of those on my side

@AngeloNeuschitzer just install the official stackapps.com/questions/2116
remove Izzy', install the official and just add the new text ;)

@AngeloNeuschitzer well its tough language but I believe makes easy for us to learn othe rlanguages

2:11 PM
@danijelc Switch off all but JS (the buttons on the console). CSS errors are not important :)

one sec

@Braiam If you're only on one site, that should do, yes.

@Braiam I did. Now it works again. Same errors on the log.

@Braiam But it wouldn't help me fixing it :o

:13878496
14:59:17.040 Use of getPreventDefault() is deprecated. Use defaultPrevented instead. jquery.min.js:3
14:59:17.559 no element found
thats all in javaScript

2:13 PM
@danijelc same here and same for the original as well.

lemme chek original

Strange. If there are no errors, it should have... um, no errors and thus work.

@Izzy Maybe the "start trigger" didn't work?
Does it have logs or the like?

I usually test putting some GM_log() or alert() in the script.
@AngeloNeuschitzer Not by default. As said, I've just picked it from StackApps and "customized" it.

original works JS console same as earlier

2:15 PM
Not sure I'm comfortable with the implications of some of your tag cleanups :P

@Izzy Hmm... then I'm sorry (I lost my customized texts with this attempt. Damn)

Just a few minutes, I've been called. To those with a little JS experience: Try putting some alert('Foobar running!'); somewhere to see if it gets executed. BBL.

@TimPost Is that how the "approve removal" form actually looks like?

that was on purpose Angelo :)

@AngeloNeuschitzer Oops... for that I'm sorry...

2:17 PM
@AngeloNeuschitzer Yes, that's the UI to burninate a tag. 3 guesses on who wrote that?

@Izzy Thats fine.
@TimPost I remember someone using this term... Hmm... wait a moment

Rhymes with heff sackhood

Jeff Atwood

2:39 PM
hey @Tim
@TimPost I already made this joke

Always late to the party, that's me

;)
I shouldn't have stayed up all night playing games
I'm so tired
could just fall asleep on my keyboard

@kalina Don't the pressure points on your foreskin stay for a day and you can't tell anybody then that your are no geek anymore.

@kalina happen to me few times.. even break a laptop once :(

@AngeloNeuschitzer I... what?

2:49 PM
@AngeloNeuschitzer I... Assume you meant "forehead", right? :P

@Undo Oh, yes. On the Skin of your Forehead

:P

(I didn't catch much sleep last night either. My daughter is ill [getting better already] and kept me awake half the night)

OK. If anyone is not yet too tired to try: to see whether the script is run at all, please take the line GM_log('Foobar running!'); (or alternatively: alert('Foobar running!');, and insert it directly after the comments on top of the script (i.e. in line 44). Then reload the page, and see if the log entry/alert gets triggert. If so, move it down to the next "space" (here: line 51, then line 57) and check again. Thanks!

Don't do it!
@Izzy is just writing a script that hijacks your browser and casts all the upvotes on him!
;)

2:51 PM
@kalina That would trigger the alarm and all votes would be reset.

Hey! That's wrong! The script is not hijacking your browser. It's remote-controlling kali... ooops...

@Izzy I'm on it.

@AngeloNeuschitzer Thanks!
I mean, it works for me. I'd like to share, as it might prove useful to others as well ;)

@Izzy It did nothing.

same here nada

2:55 PM
Right the first try did nothing (I mean, directly following the comment)?

@Izzy Yes. When I remove everything except the comments and the alert, then the alert shows

@AngeloNeuschitzer OK, I was about to ask you that. So something made the script incompatible to GM (as it works fine with Scriptish here).
But that would imply an "error" occuring somewhere inside the script. Shouldn't that register in the console?

@Izzy I'm totally not a JS dev, so this question may be dumb: Is it legal to have strings over multiple lines in JS? I mean without any delimiter char?

ask on Stack Overflow

Should be, yes.

2:59 PM
get asked a bunch of questions you've already answered in your question
then get no answer
and a random close vote as "unclear what you're asking"

@kalina I have some good experiences with SO...

@AngeloNeuschitzer one idea. At ~ line 171 start the defaultComments. Remove all { ... } lines but the last one. Does that help?

please stand by
(is cdn.sstatic.net horribly slow for you too?)
doesn't help

@AngeloNeuschitzer Yepp, quite often.
@AngeloNeuschitzer Hm. Let's leave it that temporarily, and... (checking)
...about line 254, function getLoggedInUserId() {. Remove the if-then-else, and have it simply return '';
(explanation: I just check for the stuff I changed/added, remove it step-by-step should at one point make it work, then we may get an idea what it has been)

@Izzy Nothing

3:13 PM
Yuck...

@kalina It's not our fault you're the only one still using COBOL. Sheesh.

I doubt it's the $MYUSERID stuff in UnTag()/Tag() (around line 380), but maybe you could replace those with the corresponding originals?

@TimPost hey, I have a strict "everything that is older than me doing exist" policy

@TimPost LOL

speaking of which, why am I talking to myself
;)

3:16 PM
@kalina Woah... We reached the Nirvana...

@Izzy Yes, but I'm busy the next 20 or so minutes, I come back then.
@Izzy No. I have experience with it, talking to yourself is madness - not nirvana.

@AngeloNeuschitzer LOL OK. I always though its the only way talking to someone who really understands me...
@AngeloNeuschitzer NP

Starting to think there's just no way to wire my GoPro up to hangouts without building a software Rube Goldberg machine.
I just really like the angle it has.

@TimPost Does it have a "video" function at all?

@TimPost Highlighted WASD... Gaming keyboard?

3:25 PM
@AngeloNeuschitzer Yeah it does, I can pull the live feed easy enough with VLC
@3ventic Yeah, that's my old keyboard. I now have a Razor Black Widow (2013 edition)

@TimPost But you can't select it in Hangouts as Video input? (Have any errors / exceptions?)

@AngeloNeuschitzer No. By USB, all you see is the mass storage. The camera itself interacts with the app to control it over wifi
3
Q: Is there a utility that would allow me to use my GoPro as a webcam / mic?

Tim PostI've got a nifty GoPro Hero 3, which I love. Something that I really like about it is the ultra-wide angle capture, and I'd love to be able to use it for Skype calls, Google + hangouts and other video conferencing. The problem is, Windows doesn't see it as anything but a mass storage device, wh...

@TimPost Ah, yeah. I had a similar problem once and solved it through piping (thus creating a virtual device in /dev) but you know... no pipes on windows.

Oooh caffeine overdose

@AngeloNeuschitzer All bells and whistles, but no pipes...

3:31 PM
Brb just going to find a nice quiet corner to collapse in

@AngeloNeuschitzer Hmmmm, wonder if I could manage to pass the host wireless device through to a VM and do it that way. Ugh... here we go Rube Goldberging :D
@kalina I found it's easier to resist shaking than cut down on espresso. I think I made the right call.

@TimPost this energy drink has "FOCUS THE MIND" written on it
All it seems to have done is set off my ADD with it cranked up to 11
there goes me being useful for the rest of the day

@TimPost I'm actually trying to come clean on caffeine currently. I'm down to 3 cups and start to replace part of the caffeinated coffee with decaf. Until now that helped against the shaking. (I'm surprised how hard it is, considering I gave up smoking "just so")

@AngeloNeuschitzer "come clean"
you make it sound like crack coke

@kalina tried "power napping"?

3:39 PM
@AngeloNeuschitzer atwork? :p

@kalina Yes of course. If you can sleep sitting its not much of a problem.

I don't sleep while sitting upright

@kalina Ever tried giving up coffee? If you have the same withdrawl symptoms as I have then you start thinking of it like coke.

@AngeloNeuschitzer I drank less than 10 cups of coffee before the age of 20
blame those American gamers at Arqade
they broke me
and no, I doubt it, I know what withdrawing from that feels like

@kalina Doubt what? That withdrawal is possible or that its hard?

3:42 PM
that it's anything like coke

@kalina Of course its not.
@kalina I worked with junkies on the street when I was younger and know that they are far more fucked up than I am.
(Still it bothers me that I just can't stop.)

3:56 PM
@Izzy Okay, I'm back on the script
@Izzy I noticed that the multiline strings in the original all end with \ while yours don't.
@Izzy the line "[Q]App recommendation"... is the last of the {} sets for default comments. And it ends with a , (but shoudn't)
@Izzy This line: markdown.replace(/[([^]]+)]((.+?))/g, '<a href="$2">$1</a>'); theres a closing bracket missing.
or too much, I'm unsure

@AngeloNeuschitzer I've just checked that a couple of minutes ago, they are there. Did the pastebin mess up things here?
@AngeloNeuschitzer It's the first

@Izzy Looks like it.

And it ends with },

@Izzy oops. Then fault is on me.

Looks like pastebin-copy-paste messed things up here.
The pastebin itself has it allright. So maybe your copy-paste?
How did you get it downloaded? Did you use the "Raw" link on top?

4:09 PM
@Izzy In my perspective the pastebin muliline texts do not end in \
@Izzy Yes

Or did you, I won't believe, copy-paste with Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V?
Screenshotting...

If I view the pastbin without raw the \ are there just fine
fascinating!

And next you'll tell me the script works out-of-the-box, I bet #D
So pastebin messed it up =:-0
checking...

@Izzy Maybe, have to test yet.
@Izzy Seems like it (And I thoght: Use RAW so pastebin won't mess things up)

YUCK! In fact, their "raw" is "f*peep*ck"
@AngeloNeuschitzer In this case, their RAW link does mess it up!
Their "download" link as well! What a mess!

4:14 PM
works now.
@Izzy uuhmm... no
I have an idea, sec
Fancy... I I download it with FF and the "download" link - it works.
But if I download the same link with wget the \ get lost.

Download gives the correct format (tested)
@AngeloNeuschitzer That did mess up on my end as well.

@Izzy Yep, I second that. This is the correct format.

Now make a happy man old: Does it work?

no

@kalina sadist.

4:22 PM
I don't know what you're talking about, I'm innocent

well the public beta is so far being much less of a zoo than I thought it would be

true enough, we're in google's index already as well

which is really good since I had a big power outage and was away from computers almost all day yesterday eeek

@AngeloNeuschitzer Bet she didn't even try. She just doesn't want that script passing by stealing all her rep. Such a nice worm I built... and she doesn't like it...
@NickWilde Yupp, still waiting for the <whatever> storm, but our gates seem to be strong...

I don't use Firefox

4:24 PM
@Izzy Looks like it.

@kalina The script targets MSIE only :->
@AngeloNeuschitzer \o/

Although the "user status line" seems to work only sometimes.

I use lynx for all of my browsing.

@kalina is that a successor of lynx?

So all that trouble only because that stupid pastebin! Paste it to the trashbin! Looks nice, but does nothing but causing headache. Targeted at programmers, ha!

4:25 PM
damn, I'm so busted

@AngeloNeuschitzer LOL Good one that :) Guess she means that funny MS messenger.

seriously that is a great looking script... is it free for the stealing? (and self editing of course

Rather like skype crossed with MSOoutlook and some powerpoint or the like.

and WAIT did some say INTERNET EXPLODER ONLY?
aaaaaaaaaaaaagh I hate IE

@NickWilde Sure, that's what I did :)

4:27 PM
@NickWilde who said that?

@NickWilde Nah, kidding :)
It attacks MSIE, which immediately crashes then LOL

@Izzy No loss.

@Izzy gah that is almost infarction causing

@AngeloNeuschitzer No. I'm just saving the world #D

you need to attack IE to make it crash?

4:28 PM
@NickWilde You need to attack IE to make it crash for good. (Like everything it can is open "mozilla.org")

@NickWilde Nah, I just look at it. doesn't even start then, crashes immediately. Takes the entire system along usually...

here I thought you could just use it to do anything normal and boom
yeah me to @Izzy

@NickWilde So honestly: You got the idea what it is about?

mozilla.org is probably the most common site I access via IE
@Izzy the script?

I pity people still trapped on it. The last time I used IE (for something else then downloading a decent browser) was ... hmm... 2002 or so?

4:29 PM
The original comes from StackApps. I just did a bunch of customizations.

yeah I haven't read it with a fine eye yet but quick read and yeah I see what and why its doing what it is doing

@AngeloNeuschitzer Last "real joke" I heard that even made MS-support ROFL was a customer requesting support for the "latest Silverlight, but on MSIE 6" #D
@NickWilde Latest thing (not fully complete yet) is multi-site-support. Original saved the first site as "yours" for the Welcome greeting, if I remember correctly...

A: Secure cross-platform instant messaging software?

SethYou can try Tox, a new encrypted IM client. It's in early Alpha, but the chat feature seems to work quite well already. It has all the features you want: One on one messaging. It encrypts messages. Supports Mac OSX, Windows, and Linux. No setup needed. As I said it is in alpha sta...

And I felt the need to have specific snippets per site.

Wasn't sure if I should add a new answer or not..

4:32 PM
Like e.g. "no dev questions here" for Android Enthusiasts – but the link to "answer quality" for SR.
@Seth Don't say you wanted to recommend Skype?
(sorry, you just crossed a "sadist party" here)

@Izzy No.. Can skype do encryption?

@Seth Honestly?

@Seth If it does the job add an answer.

@AngeloNeuschitzer cool. I already had an answer on there though..

@Seth Depends if you count "USA can read it" as "encrypted"

4:33 PM
Encrypted by default – but in a way MS, NSA, and who-ever-else sits in the middle sniffing.

I see.

@Seth Ah I see, iirc the corresponding meta discussion said: Only one A and all the tools in it.

@AngeloNeuschitzer Oh really? I thought it was the other way around...

Also, your A on tox is a bit on the slim side. You use it? Your experiences?

@AngeloNeuschitzer I've used it a bit.

4:36 PM
@Seth Hmm... seems disputed.

A: What to do when an answer contains several suggestions?

FlykFor the voting system to mean anything, we need to employ the system of using one recommendation per answer. Allowing multiple recommendations in a single answer introduces ambiguity into the voting since it's not obvious which recommendation is being voted for. This use of the Stack Exchange en...

@Seth You might write that to the A along with how you like it, hmm?

@Izzy multi-site support is cool, are you doing that or is someone eles doing so, is it under version control somewhere or just on pastebin?

You know the difference between a "this can do it [link]" and a proper "recommendation" (its cool because ...)
:)
@NickWilde Don't use pastebin for this (just a warning)

yeah I caught that discussion - tail end anyways - but I thought I read as long as the line endings are ending fine it'll be fine

@NickWilde But the line endings aren't fine on pastebin.
Maan I hate having lost the priv to view vote counts. I want to see what are the vote counts on the Q for several suggestions / answer.

@Seth I feel it crazy to force mixing up things this way. Two people don't share a single answer either. When it makes sense to have them both in one answer, sure. But two completely independent solutions? Which one do I upvote then if I upvote the answer?

4:43 PM
@AngeloNeuschitzer but can be regexed to be fine

@Izzy this

@Izzy That was my thoughts too.

it's a very important point to make
doing it any other way makes the votes pointless

@NickWilde I was doing those modifications for me personally. I'm not aware of any official update in the last few months. Of course I'm willing to share, and wouldn't mind to have my changes included with the original project (or even cross-checked by its original author).

No, I vote because I think thats a good answer (in a formal way)
That is, if the tool roughly does what the OP wanted AND its in a good form I upvote. If it lacks either substancially I downvote.

4:44 PM
@kalina Exactly.
@AngeloNeuschitzer But I don't install answers on my devices.

well if you agree with me, upvote the meta post so it becomes policy

@AngeloNeuschitzer that should have been one of the things that should have been figured out before public beta

@kalina checking...

@Izzy No, but I want this site to contain well worded answers for the questions I ask. Not the "most popular" but a selection of tools with good reasoning.
If there are sufficient amount of answers for it to be useful to have a "poll" then the Q was too broad!

@AngeloNeuschitzer exactly
you should add that to someone's answer

4:49 PM
@kalina Done.
@AngeloNeuschitzer I see no contradiction here.
And I see no general rule to it either. Sometimes it's more fitting to combine two recommendations into one answer, another time it's just the other way around.

@Izzy I do. If one proposes "One answer per Post" (like the answer of @kalina on that Q) then you will not get two recommendations in one post - no matter how fitting it is.

@AngeloNeuschitzer If you post two recommendations in one answer, which recommendation does the vote count towards?

@kalina None.
@kalina It counts against the quality of the answer

this is a recommendations site, the votes don't just reflect the quality of the answer
they reflect the quality of the recommendation as well

To me I think the problem is that in some cases one is appropriate and other times the other. And which it is is mainly a judgement call

4:55 PM
@kalina But they should.

using your methodology - I could write an amazingly high quality answer that tells somebody to install malware

(of course with my judgement being the only absolutely correct one :P)

and it would get upvoted because you're voting on the quality of the formatting and the number of words in the answer
using my methodology, it would get downvoted into the ground, because I wasn't helpful

@kalina That contradicts what I wrote earlier (i.E. that an answer MUST fulfil the criteria of the Q)

@AngeloNeuschitzer "must fulfil the criteria" is not something that will always be possible
we are going to get a lot of "it does everything except <X>"

4:57 PM
@kalina But you can come close.
Yes and thats fine as long as its stated.

@AngeloNeuschitzer and thus, votes represent the quality of the recommendation

@AngeloNeuschitzer Again, no contradiction – the malware-part could be back-packed ;)

one recommendation that misses one criteria would be better (have more votes) than another recommendation that misses two criterias
People should be able to arrive here from Google and go "ooh, that must be a good product, it has 50 upvotes!"
and then try it and be satisfied

@kalina Unless the latter is more popular.

otherwise we fail at providing a service to the internet

4:58 PM
@Izzy ohno! (on a topic with no comments) TypeError: comment is undefined

@NickWilde checking...

anyway! Hometime!

@kalina The question is which service we want to provide: Have a list and a poll? Or have some deeply interesting recommendatinos that go well into why a tool is good at it?
I vote for the latter.

@NickWilde Cannot reproduce. WorksForMe
