6:00 PM
I watched so much cartoon network in the 90's :)

@voretaq7 I don't know about that, you seem underage

@jojomodjo I perceive that you're very hostile and insulting, and without any particular good reason. You won't last much longer here doing that.

^ I concur

...

idunno, he thinks I'm young - flattery will get you everywhere

6:02 PM
yeah, but underage?
You're not that tight
2

ugh they're saying 3FT of snow now

@DennisKaarsemaker hey! Meanie! :(

@voretaq7 Especially if you back the flattery with a bottle of your favorite whisky?

@DennisKaarsemaker I just died.

at least my fish and lizard still love me! (until the food runs out)

6:03 PM
@voretaq7 it's a pity that's not all on one line

@voretaq7 Blood worms are cheap.

@freiheit OK, flattery will get you most places, and Whisky will get you everywhere else
2

@voretaq7 Plus, if you get low, you can harvest some fresh maggots from all the corpses washed up on the brooklyn shore.

@WesleyDavid lizard won't eat 'em -- too small. (fucking size queen)

@voretaq7 just like daddy.

6:04 PM
@Cole Yeah, with a blizzard warning too.

@MichaelHampton State of Emergency in RI and MA

@Cole Goodbye internet - The Comms Room has finally broken me.

we have ice pellets in NY
@WesleyDavid Fragile? Must be an Italian kitty...

@WesleyDavid you've always been broken.

also, RT is being a whore :(

6:05 PM
@Cole Oh well in that case, save some room on the sofa for me.

RT is polygamous, not a whore
why aren't you politically correct

(this is a problem because I want it to be a slut - it should accept my tickets WITHOUT authentication!)

@voretaq7 Letting anyone with a network presence submit a ticket?

@voretaq7 not everything can be as loose as you.

@WesleyDavid no - that's what I want! A good old-fashioned ticket slut!

6:05 PM

@Cole HEY! MEAN! :cries and runs to the cold, scaly embrace of a loving fish:
@Hennes hah! love it!
...Polly doesn't look pleased though.

The situation asked for it.
Anyway. waves Gone for dinner

@Hennes I just ate breakfast!
And might be throwing it back up.
hork hork hork
Where are @voretaq7's slippers when you need them.

@WesleyDavid ...see, this is why I stopped wearing slippers

@WesleyDavid you need to hide a furball ?

6:08 PM
...and storing tobacco in them. Watson was most distressed when he smoked that hairball.

oh. kaaaay.

@tombull89 okeh
oh horking @WesleyDavid - I have to auth to RT to use the damn REST interface....

@Iain A hot-slimy-breakfast-sausage-sandwhich-ball

:spit:
@WesleyDavid Sausage, Feggs, and Cheese in a Hairball?

@WesleyDavid did you find a bike yet ? It's been to wet and windy to get out this week but tomorrow looks promising

6:14 PM
@voretaq7 With a cup of lukewarm oil on the side.
@Iain Did you see my photo frmo my home-office window the other day? =)

bye. gn.

@AbhijitNavale sleep well

@Iain He's found many bikes, but prefers shopping online over riding

And no bike yet - sickness has sidelined me.

Lol

6:15 PM

@freiheit I haven't found bikes that make me happy. I JUST WANT TO FEEL HAPPY WHY IS THAT WRONG!!

@WesleyDavid cocaine.

@voretaq7 'spensive

@WesleyDavid You have to ride the bikes for them to make you happy

@WesleyDavid low-grade crack then.

6:18 PM
I'm scared

@David You're gonna do a criterium?

@freiheit ones a crit, ones a road race
my first races, the crit is March 16 @ 8am, the road race is March 17 @ 2:30pm

@David So I guess you're pretty fast, then. :) Good luck.
(and especially, good luck not getting injured doing the crit)

@freiheit eh, i'm probably going to get mega-dropped

Mass is banning all cars from the roads after 4 pm. It's home time, @Cole :)

6:21 PM
@MichaelHampton What the heck?
Mark Henderson licks toads.

Q: WAN Access to Mac Mini OS X Server

Kyle I.I purchased a Mac Mini Server a while back and it's been a slow go getting it set up. One of the biggest hiccups is WAN access to the server, which leads me to believe it's a port forwarding issue. I have a Motorola SBG6580 Modem (modem/wireless/router all-in-one). I thought that I had all of th...

Can a diamond move that, plz?

@MichaelHampton Finally instituting that bicycle nirvana us bicycling advocates have been after for so many years? ;)

@freiheit Sure, if you want to ride your bike in a blizzard.

@MichaelHampton Oh wait -- sorry, I'm dyslexic. I read that as banning all bikes on the road after 4PM. Nevermind. Banning cars is cool.

6:22 PM
@WesleyDavid More complete story: google.com/hostednews/ap/article/…

@MichaelHampton I need a different bike for that. I'm thinking one with 4" metal-studded tires. And about $2500 worth of cold-weather clothing, too...

@freiheit And some bear spray for pedestrians.

@freiheit Antarctica Style!

@David I hear the outfits they use for ocean rescues work pretty well for bicycling in really cold weather
Something sorta like this: rescuedirect.com/Merchant2/…

@MichaelHampton oh, I am home so I'm lucky :P

6:27 PM
@freiheit lol, that'd look ridiculous

No, wait, here's the one: rescuedirect.com/Merchant2/…

looks like hazmat gear
probably great for sweating a bucketload and losing weight

Is this a question for you guys?

Q: Can't start WebLogic admin console

ClintJCLI'm wondering how to fix this error. We had the wrong Java installed on my machine when I got it, so my boss installed JRocket to fix things. WebLogic has been having problems ever since. I cannot perform my job functions because I cannot start the admin console to deploy my program. <Feb 8...

@OliverSalzburg Not sure..might be for SO. Someone who knows Java better could give you a better opinion.

Sometimes, SF make me want to punch myself in the face

6:34 PM
@MichaelHampton It just came back from SO telling us that it might be better suited for SF :D

Q: What kind of cable is this?

ethrbunnyI need to cost out some switching and figure out how to network a PC to this type of network.

@OliverSalzburg In that case... :)

waves from dinner location.

@SpacemanSpiff There's also refiddle.com and regexpfiddle.com

6:41 PM
I am afraid to open this file in my downloads folder:
How do these things end up in my downloads folder without my recollection of having done anything. =(

Dear lord.
Drugs.

pdf porn is the best

Okay whew:

Q: Host CPU does not scale frequency when KVM guest needs it

HuygensI have an HP server with an AMD dual core CPU (Turion II Neo N40L) which can scale frequencies from 800 to 1500 MHz. However, when the KVM guest is using 100% of the CPU, the frequency does not scale (as would be expected) to 1500 MHz! The host system is a Linux based OS (curently Ubuntu 12.04 L...

(I wouldn't be using one of those as a virtualization host)

ok, I was kicked a total of 5 times today
I'll just stop being offtopic
it's annoying getting kicked..

6:49 PM
@jojomodjo I don't think "off topic" quite covers it. We speak about everything from VMware licensing to bestiality, mainframes to MILFs, Religion to politics. No one gets kicked for it.
@jojomodjo I think "off topic" is the closest excuse to "Rude, brash, and not interested in playing nice with the other children." Just chill - you'll be fine.

So, being post-op for 1.5 weeks now, this is my brain feels now that I don't have to think about my chest all day, every day.

Found a nice Sr Windows Engineer gig open up the road from me at a consulting firm

@MDMarra woo!

@MDMarra don't do it!

emailed my resume last night, had a voicemail when I got off the train this morning
@ewwhite ಠ_ಠ

6:55 PM
What does the consulting firm do?

@ewwhite Consults.

@ewwhite The same as every other consulting firm. Bills outrageous amounts of money for very little actual work.

So @mdmarra is going to become a consultant now?
He's missing my business proposal!

@ewwhite Not sure yet. Haven't scheduled the call
What business proposal is that?
Sit in chat and tell you how to set up AD? :)

7:02 PM
OK, GoHome time because... well... snow

Make some damn money!

I generally prefer more details than "make damn money" in my business proposals

"make some damn money fast"

I'm in.

I like that Chopper guy. he writes good answers.

7:05 PM
@mossy Yeah, he runs one of the largest VMWare installs on the planet

@MDMarra That hesitation is how you lose money-making opportunities!

@mossy He used to spend a lot of time in chat, but he's fighting some cancer now so he hasn't been around as much
@ewwhite So, a few small investments will yield 1000% returns?
(I love pyramid schemes)

=/

@MDMarra Four more VMware/Exchange/AD installs signed on.

@ewwhite Excellent. Let me know what/when you need with them and we'll knock it out. This waiting around in chat for 30 min worth of work isn't cutting it :)

7:08 PM
@MDMarra it takes time to do stuff... and line them up

Is @jscott around? I have a PowerShell command that I feel is too sloppy, but works.
@ewwhite Oh I know

@MDMarra you'll never make a devops with an attitude like that

haha
get-adforest | select applicationpartitions -ExpandProperty applicationpartitions feels redundant
aaand it is
(get-adforest).applicationpartitions does the same thing

Learning Exchange through SF questions....check!

7:26 PM
Hi all!

@TheCleaner we get a few people who do things like that
Question Overflow, Sin City (no, not Las Vegas)
204 1 6
He's doing something by asking questions on SF but I'm not entirely certain what

@TheCleaner that isn't exactally a bad thing, everyone had to learn at some point

@Zypher So I looked a LOPSA-East schedule and the lightning talks are super early... :( and our talks are at the same time.

yea i know
at least you won't be hung over for them :)

Happy Birthday to MEEeeeeee!
6

7:34 PM
@Zypher Yeah... Er am still the only attendee that can't drink?

@Jacob not sure
but probably

7:46 PM
Where is LOPSA-East this year?

On the westcoast

Ooh fun. Maybe I'll try and make it

Q: How does Exchange System Attendant determine what domain controller to bind too?

David YenglinI have a centralized data center where my Exchange 2010 is located. This site also holds the FSMO master DC. I also have two off site locations where I have two other domain controllers, one in each location. Both of which are also Global Catalogs. How does Exchange/System Attendant decide wh...

"Use sites and services for this"

"Ok, so I manually went in and changed DNS record weight. That's what you meant right?"

errr
why would you need to change anything, default just works with correct replication

7:59 PM
Because he has three physical location and a single site in AD
so exchange would sometimes use a DC at a remote site

hmm never thought of it like that
assumptions never a good idea, i need to avoid it

Yeah, defining sites in AD when you have a multi-site physical topology is critical for stuff to work right

Whoo, I just incorporated and didn't bend over for legal zoom

Gawd, Exchange 2003 sucks.

8:14 PM
@HopelessN00b Gawd, Exchange 2003 sucks.

@MichaelHampton not as bad as Domino.

@MichaelHampton What's wrong with 2007 and 2010? PowerShell-based CLI ftw.

since 2007 exchange drastically improved

There has not been a decent Lotus product since 1-2-3, and that was eons ago.

@Cole That's because Domino's not a mail platform. It's IBM's version of Access with a mail daemon crammed into it.

8:16 PM
@HopelessN00b it sucks so hard.

2010 was a dream, aside from some minor implementation/usability issues I experienced. My biggest gripe was having to move from GUI to PS and back for certain tasks

@Cole The thing that really slays me about it, is how it pukes all over IBM's AS400s... so you end up running it on a Windows server. Heh.

We run it on RHEL

@Hyppy You can do everything in PS with enough dedication :)

Migrated from Solaris 10

8:17 PM
@HopelessN00b From your earlier suggestion, I just e-filed my incorp stuff to the state.

@Jacob 'Gratz!

@MDMarra Yeah, I assume you could if you wanted to dedicate your life to it. Most Exchange admins have other tasks in their day too, though :-P

Yep

@MDMarra If only that were true, I wouldn't have to be manually reconnecting, archiving, disconnecting and purging Exchange 2003 mailboxes right now. >:/

@HopelessN00b Oh, 2003 doesn't count
I was speaking strictly about 2010+

8:19 PM
Oh, yeah, then you're right.

High availability readiness in 2010 was the best part

Is that email admin speak for DAG?

@MDMarra Directed Acyclic Graphs?

@MikeyB Or Database Availability Groups. Same thing really

@MDMarra not just DAG. Front end as well

8:23 PM
Alright, how the holy crap did people ever admin Exchange 2003 back in the day? This is ridiculous, and I'm only 10 mailboxes in. :/

@Hyppy Got it. You can tell I suck at Exchange :)
I can mail mailboxes and stuff and that's it
I'd love to be able to do a big deployment from scratch but never had the opportunity

@MDMarra Really? What's so hard about it? For all your AD knowledge, it's kinda surprising you suck at Exchange.

I guess it's not that I suck as much as I've never been exposed to it
There's always been email admins everywhere I've gone

That would do it. It is something of a beast until you get some experience fighting with it.

I love working with exchange.

8:26 PM
The best way to learn Exchange is by doing

@MDMarra Sounds like Ed's giving you that opportunity, no?
Or are they just little ones?

planning a nice big exchange 2007 to 2013 migration with 4 dag members once MS release the migration patch

@RobM have you heard anything about the timeframe for that?

@RobM Ooo, sexy. Love to be able to do that, but we had to pull the trigger on migrating off of 2003. :(

8:30 PM
only the same 2013/1Q nonsense everyone else has heard. Which is worrying, I'm usually pretty well plugged into the exchange stuff and hear when its nearly ready

@HopelessN00b He's good with Exchange
He just calls me when he needs some AD stuff done or other random Windows things that aren't Exchange

@MDMarra Linux admin with Exchange skills? Damn, he's just full of surprises.

that does seem like an odd mix.

I suck at Exchange, AD, general networking and many other things.

@MichaelHampton don't say that too loud in here. People might see it as an offer

8:33 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker Hey, if the price is right...

@HopelessN00b I only do the Exchange because I'm fixing the Dovecot and Sendmail systems I installed all over the country 6-7 years ago...

paging @voretaq7...
heh. sendmail

@ewwhite Oh, yeah, that sounds... <shudder> Still an odd combo, though.

@ewwhite Did you ever see the sendmail SunOS story about the guy that couldn't send email more than 500 miles?

(one client is getting hacked through their 2005-era Squirrelmail installation.)

8:34 PM
@MDMarra that story is awesome

@DennisKaarsemaker Yeah, I read it from time to time and laugh every time

@MDMarra Funniest IT story I've heard, I think.

Bow to my supreme google skills!

8:35 PM
what search string did you use?
Mine was "can't send email 500 miles sunos sendmail story"

the 500 mile email problem

@DennisKaarsemaker Classic story, love it still

most *nix mail admins I know consider exchange, certainly the earlier versions at least, as Microsoft's confession letter for crimes against network protocols

@DennisKaarsemaker that's very good...

email at the speed of light

8:37 PM
I like Exchange a lot...

@RobM Indeed. I'm pretty die-hard *nix, but Exchange is the greatest thing since sed.

mainly because it's the only MS product I know well enough to rollout without too much trouble

it's always been good to me
it's got me a few jobs from people wanted an exchange sysadmin and its worked well everywhere i've deployed it

Man, it looks shitty out there

how you doing @cole, recovering well still?

8:42 PM
@Cole It is shitty out there. The roads are covered with snow and overturned tractor-trailers.

Hmm.
I'm bored.

go out and play in the snow

@RobM Doing very well, my chest looks phenomenal.

No longer like uncooked bacon then

@MichaelHampton yeah doesn't look pretty. 13 minutes till the parking ban!

Q: Multiple users, one public_html directory

Christopher IckesNew to creating users with linux. TATS!!

So many tattoos.

"You might wish to address this to Superuser or the UNIX SE instead of here" ??

looking good mate

8:50 PM
@RobM thanks, as the swelling goes down (that was taken yesterday), my pec muscles are really starting to show.

feeling good too then :-)

Also, wouldn't it be better to give each user their only html directory and symlink to what they need to share?

For sure, can't wait till I can start working out.

glad you're doing well

@mossy it could be answered here - everyone has to learn

8:51 PM
Got a call from a recruiter in Atlanta, they're looking to staff a new location for CBS.
Curious what it's like to work for a TV Network.

@Iain I was questioning the comment. I figured it was valid for SF

@mossy ah - right - sorted

@DennisKaarsemaker I've had enough snow today. I had to brush a foot of it off my car this morning.

Good lord, my hands (especially my thumbs) hurt!
Getting the HDD out of a white iMac... ridiculous... and ow!

That's the one where you have to put like a spatula through the cleaning vents at the back to unhook the case right?

8:58 PM
dont think so
oh, maybe... used a credit card
then you have to peel away a ton of EMI shielding, which just happens to be brittle
get some recessed torx screws out, lift out the display
then you can finally see the HDD

yep that's the one
first time i did one of those it took me bloody ages

and the HDD was the hardest part!

next one went a lot quicker but it was still a pain in the hoop
