@voretaq7 Thank goodness we have UPS (Unreliable Parcel Service)
UPS - When it absolutely, positively has to get ran over by a forklift, set on fire, and left at the wrong house.

4:15 AM
@WesleyDavid you forgot "Pushed into the gap between the truck and the loading dock"

@voretaq7 That's FedEx (Plus a smarmy driver).
Actually, in my shipping experiences, FedEx does a better job than UPS and is usually cheaper.
And USPS priority mail is pretty sweet.
But wow UPS.

@WesleyDavid DeadEx
When you absolutely, positively have to kill the contents of the package, accept no substitutes

That's what you get for trying to smuggle @Mark's brown snakes out of Australia.
FedEx, the only thing deadlier than Australia!

4:32 AM
So, has anyone else ever had to brute force a router password because nobody knows what it is and it was installe dbefore you took over the network?

yes
or I've had secretive bosses...
I spend a lot of time reverse-engineering setups.

Driving me nuts
What did you use?
I've got hydra running off a word list, but I don't think it's going to break it, because every other password I've received so far is things like p$ych7667!
It's also going to take 33 hours to exhaust the word list. Sigh.

4:49 AM
@MarkHenderson I probed around the company... but in the worst case, came to work overnight with a serial cable...

@ewwhite haha ok. I've started an instance of ncrack side by side to see if either of them can get in

@MarkHenderson where's your buddy ?
the admin nazi
forgot his name
@MichaelHampton <== maybe him
I still question that behaviour you had on my answer
he acted like a little bitch
I don't like that

@jojomodjo It takes two to tango

so he's not here

4:55 AM
I think you have some misunderstandings about the way this site works

Somebody called?

@MichaelHampton is not a admin or a moderator on this site
I, however, am
So if you have concerns, address them to me

well I have beef with both of you
why do you both act like people i disagree with ?
that's what I'd like to know

@jojomodjo I think we've both been professional and, as much as can be expected, respectful to you at every opportunity. You have done nothing but bitch and moan
Now, I don't know what kind of sites you normally hang around, but Stack Exchange is different
We expect professional answers from professional systems administrators

Will someone please fill me in on what you're talking about?

4:58 AM
What I don't understand is why you have taken such a personal affront to some feedback/criticism of the way in which you presented your answer

"Do as your mother says and drink it."
also are we having a drama hour? because I can pour myself a scotch and be mean...

@voretaq7 That kind of weirded me out a bit.

What happened?

@ewwhite It hasn't happened yet!

@ewwhite I 'unno.

5:00 AM
@jscott I LOVE the tequila weasel.
...and I recently used the "this scotch is older than you are" line on a fratboy in a bar.

There are boiler plate comments in the low quality posts review queue. One of them is: "While this link may answer the question, it is better to include the essential parts of the answer here and provide the link for reference. Link-only answers can become invalid if the linked page changes."

@voretaq7 Is that the name for the purple thing that alludes to drunken incest?

Apparently I'm a "little bitch" because of that boilerplate text.

@jscott yea, that's the tequila monster / tequila weasel.

@MichaelHampton wow, that's quite civil, and much more than I usually drop on link-only answers.

5:02 AM
@MichaelHampton fwiw I think that boilerplate text isn't very well formulated, which is why I use my own

@jscott It was written by Stack Exchange, not me. :)
Oh well, this is somewhat more interesting than reading RFCs...

@MichaelHampton Ugh, I'm writing ETL scripts. RFCs are positively engaging compared to this

@voretaq7 haha, "Man that guy is totally lame" I also like the hat.

@MarkHenderson personally I think it should link to the mSO question about why link only answers suck

@voretaq7 ditto

5:03 AM
@jscott The tequila weasel also encourages lesbianism

@MarkHenderson I've somehow gotten myself deep into the internals of IPv6 autoconfiguration thanks to this Windows box doing strange shit.

@MichaelHampton Ahh, yeah

@voretaq7 Wow TW really gained a lot of wait between those two strips.

I can only think "something is wrong" there
None of my DC's are giving out RAs
The only thing that crossed my mind is that you might have RRAS running on it, which could be doing weird shit

@MarkHenderson Oh, I updated the question. The DC isn't giving out an RA. It's sending a weird solicitation, which is somehow making the router send out the weird RA.
At least, if Wireshark isn't lying to me...

5:06 AM
Soo... did Jojo get kicked?

@MichaelHampton I had some weird RA problems a while ago

@jscott people drink more, he gets bigger.

@WesleyDavid Nope
He just.... went away

@MarkHenderson Yeah, this was sufficiently strange that I couldn't figure it out, so I just made a question out of it.

Q: Seeing strange IPv6 requests being dropped in our firewall

Mark HendersonI'm seeing the following IPv6 addresses having requests dropped by our firewall. It doesn't seem to be anything too malicious, but there seems to be a strange pattern to them: 2aab:19a7:3971:94f4::80fe (62,050 requests) bb2d:f96b:f097:bccd::80fe (31,392 requests) aafb:2bc8:ccad:1451::80fe (26,4...

5:09 AM
@MarkHenderson Oh yeah, the report was printing the addresses backwards. I remember reading that a while back.

@MichaelHampton Yeah each byte was reversed
It's still doing it, but at least I know how to read it now

How do you even miswrite code to make it do that?

I should probably patch it or something
@MichaelHampton big/little endian? Not sure

@MarkHenderson Even C has conversion functions for that, and they should be used on every call...
Though I haven't done any IPv6 coding in C, so I don't know what the structures look like.

5:18 AM
@StackExchange Lame
Even the alt-text is lame
XKCD doesn't miss the mark very often

@MarkHenderson yeah but when Randall misses the mark not even the tequila weasel can help
this... is one of those times

Q: Looking to host client sites with mediatemple (ve)

Petter ThowsenI'm currently providing my clients with hosting through hostgator reseller but my new CMS depends on PHP => 5.4, I needed something else. I'll be using WHM/Cpanel and probably WHMCS for the billing part. I first looked at rackspace "cloud servers". I actually set up a server, configuring a LAMP...

The Tequila Weasel will be in his bunk bottle.

YOUR SERVICES ARE DOOOOOOOOMED!!
Nighters, all. ZZzzzz... -.-

Cya
Probably home time for me too soon

5:26 AM
thank you and goodnight!

Looks like @jojomodjo was auto-muted cos he collected a barrage of offensive flags
explains a lot

finally I've been un-muted :|
@MarkHenderson make no mistake, I still don't like you

@jojomodjo Try not to collect offensive flags, the system automatically mutes you if you collect them in a short period of time
@jojomodjo That's fine. I'm not here to be liked.

Not trying to break balls here, but since when are CDNs allowed to not serve content over HTTP??

@JoelESalas wtf?
I would think that would be their primary content delivery protocol
Anyway hometime, and thus, the weekend for me
Cya

5:36 AM
@MarkHenderson your 57.2k rep seems to be an extension of something :P

6:01 AM
@jojomodjo Dude.

@ewwhite yes homie

@jojomodjo What's the problem? Why the abusive language?

@ewwhite what are you talking about homie ? I was very polite

@jojomodjo I suppose so. I just saw the ban and such...

Damn, I need a drink.

6:13 AM
drink water, it's tha best

6:44 AM
@MarkHenderson Our CDN took a dump. DOES NOT BUILD CONFIDENCE

Well I think I solved my own IPv6 problem...

G'day

@Iain Morning
You won't believe what the problem was :)

I'll read your question when I'm better caffeinated - whats the solution - a windows bug ?

Q: Why is my domain controller causing my router to send advertisements for Unique Local Addresses?

Michael HamptonI'm currently evaluating Server 2012 to serve as a domain controller in a small heterogeneous network of Linux and Windows workstations and servers, all of which would eventually be joined to the domain. This is a 100% dual stack network; every device has IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity. The router is...

I haven't posted the answer yet because I want to be 100% sure it's fixed...but it was a typo in the default IPv6 gateway.
And it's kind of embarrassing.

7:02 AM
@jojomodjo FWIW it was me that deleted your answer. It was correctly flagged as Low Quality (being link only). A comment was left requesting improvement and when you failed to do that (and it was evident that it wasn't going to happen) I deleted it. Your argument about it being on a well know respected website really doesn't cut it. We recently had a huge problem with links when sun.com disappeared meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/141203/blogs-sun-com-is-dead.
@jojomodjo It boils down to we want content here on SE not pointers to content elsewhere.

@lain pshhh , that's Java man, everybody knows Java sucks buffalo ballz

@jojomodjo Tastefully addressed

Debian's not going away for the next 500 years, minimum

@jojomodjo Don't say that, it reduces my desire to live forever

you can quote me on that
@JoelESalas you'll live in the memory of your loved ones
I mean, where do you think this image comes from ?

7:16 AM
Trust me, you will not find anywhere else on Stack Exchange with a lower opinion of Java.

@jojomodjo what are you wittering on about ?

@Iain I was saying that Bash is better than Java

Redesign your application using the front controller pattern. — Michael Hampton 11 hours ago

giving an acient idea some fancy name like "The flux capacitor Pattern"
isn't adding value to it
I think Java people are mostly like "inventors" , they want to give names to things
they want to patent them
in such a way that everyone would think that they originally come from Java
which they don't

8:16 AM
good moaning

drilling your own kneecaps out is a better idea than Java. And is likely to be less painful over the longer term

Java has good parts too

morning

Java has good parts ? shut the front door ..
"Java, The good parts"
would be quite a slim book
like only the covers
and one empty page

8:34 AM
The best part of any Java app I've used as been quitting it.
It was originally envisaged as "write once, run anywhere" and outside of trivial webpage applets, its failed miserably at that.

9:04 AM
@RobM Write once, debug everywhere.

yep

9:40 AM
The best part of Java was the free coffee mug that Sun sent me long ago. Unfortunately I also misplaced it long ago...

i had one with that little java logo fella on it.
i had a whole bag of goodies from a sun stall at a trade show and that was the only thing that was worth using.

10:25 AM
I don't get Quora. Visiting it, let alone actually using it, is like punching yourself.

@RobM Don't you have to log in with Facebook to use it? I nope'd right out when I saw that. The only thing that gets my Facebook details is Facebook itself.

facebook, twitter or i think they also say "email account" which I assume means creating an account the old fashioned way.

Ah, okay.
Not got any use for it tbh.

what's quora?

quora.com

10:33 AM
Not to be mistaken for Quorra from Tron: Legacy.

sort of halfway house between here, livejournal and experts exchange

Which I watched with my Dad on saturday, he quite enjoyed it.

livejournal is for emo's, expert sexchange I never liked. So I'll just stay here :)

just watched 'the watch'. Enjoyed that.

next film is Wreck-It Ralph, tomorrow evening. It's long overdue.

10:39 AM
I got a blu-ray over christmas along with the james bond box set.. and got myself a good few blu ray films since then to watch

Morning

morning

11:45 AM
Morning (well, techniucally noon since I am at 12:44 local)

12:32 PM
So much snow..

12:55 PM
Hi all

1:11 PM
So are you lucky bastards in the NorthEast at least getting the day off work?

@HopelessN00b grammarFail == True

'ello @Jacob - hows business?

@tombull89 Eh, right now only Minecraft stuff is on sale; and its already a saturated market. We are getting someone though.
Right now I'm fixing a silly F-UP I made with DNS

@Jacob Have you got a website up and running? And considered posting ads at the Minecraft Forum and Minecraft subreddits?
Although I guess the average age of someone who wants to run a minecraft server is somewhat low.

@tombull89 Website has been up for ~ 3 months; reddit ads are proving to be very expensive and not too good on ROI

1:18 PM
@Jacob ah I meant listings in /r/mcservers rather than buying actual ads

@tombull89 Because I don't have a formal LLC/Corp they won't "approve" me as a host. Even though I am registered with the right government agencies and have insurance.
@tombull89 I thought that was for servers not for server hosts?

@Jacob I've seen both advertised there, to be honest.

@Jacob Why don't you set yourself up an LLC? Pretty easy, and definitely something you should do anyway, for liability reasons.

@HopelessN00b It's A work in progress; I have to own the entity but give my dad POA. So I think riding out the 10 months until I'm 18 might be better, or when I make enough to get a lawyer to draft the papperwork
@HopelessN00b I thinking S corp anyway

@Jacob Oh, yeah, didn't realize you were a minor. That's gotta suck.

1:22 PM
@Jacob can I have a look at the site?

@HopelessN00b I have an insurance policy from the Hartford that covers cyber liability and whatnot.
@tombull89 Sure, the way it works is that all the "brands" are under the control of my "main brand" which will become the LLC/S corp. MinerHost.com

cyber liability? Jeeze.

@Jacob Both good choices... really all about protecting your personal assets from BS and projecting a more professional image.

@tombull89 Ps, I'm fixing the WHMCS install to the main brand now, so the layout might change.

Ah, Multicraft, good. I like Multicraft.

1:25 PM
@HopelessN00b I know, but we don't know how to give myself ownership for taxes and my dad POA.

McMyAdmin was quite good too but I preferred Multicraft.
Not bad prices, either.

@tombull89 I'm going to call my CPA and she what he suggests today.
@tombull89 Yeah, Multicraft is really nice
@tombull89 ^^ I was like WTF? There is no way anyone could reliably do it *much cheaper than I offer.

@Jacob I was thinking the prices seemed reasonable to me

Sweet, Gapps is getting mail sent to my domain -_-

@Jacob how much are you oversubscribing your servers? What's the logical CPU/minecraft servers ratio? Just curious really

1:40 PM
@pauska right now, 1:1 :)
Most likely 1:4 on smaller servers and 1:2 on the bigger stuff

so one minecraft instance is one logical cpu (or core if you're not using HT)? How do you control the affinity?
no, wait, that was a stupid question. Let the scheduler do that :P
minecraft lets you set a heap size? you don't have to virtualize them to control the ram usage?

@pauska That's because of the amount of customers I have
@pauska Yurp, you can spec a heap size on boot.

that's nice.. makes it a ton easier to host stuff like this

@pauska definitely

@Jacob what sort of hardware are you running on? I'd imagine minecraft would be happy with as much RAM as it can handle and as many cores you can give to it.
SSDs would probably be good too.

1:50 PM
@tombull89 SSDs are expensive.
@tombull89 E3-1230 with 16GB of RAM on my first node. The rest will have 32GB.
I have 2 15K SAS drives in a RAID1
I leave the OS 2GB and Multicraft can give the rest to servers.

how is the cpu usage?
and how do you back up the customer data?

morning

@pauska Pretty low right now, only have around 5 servers active
@pauska They do it from the MC panel

today is break 5k rep day

2:06 PM
serverfault.com/questions/471267/… <-- "I can't get IPFilter to work correctly" ... Nor can anyone else, which is why nobody uses it anymore. =]

@TheCleaner Ah good, my work is already done. Does that mean I can go home and sleep?

Q: Will uploading a 1.4gb video to my server and letting users watch it fill my servers RAM/Virtual Memory and crash the server?

Gautama DudeI'm a bit unclear on what the RAM is used for, so I'm wondering if when a user watches a video on my server, does it go from the filesystem, "out through the pipes" and onto my users screen, or does it go: filesystem>RAM>"pipes">User? If the video is loaded completely into RAM it will probably cr...

I'm a bit unclear on what the RAM is used for, just killed me inside.

you know what, I got nothing.
that's beyond snark.

Good thing there wasn't much there to begin with, but still.

2:11 PM
www.youtube.devops

@MichaelHampton How do you restart the VMware OSP guest tools?

@ewwhite sup homie

It's dead, Jim.
Horay for warranties!

How can I invite a user to chat?

@MDMarra fixing shit

2:13 PM
@tombull89 I'm a doctor not an IT Engineer...

@HopelessN00b - yes...feel free. I'm just glad to not be in the northeast today...now go upvote my answers today... :)

@fuero Can't, really. Comment @ them and tell them to get their ass into chat.

what else did I miss with homie guy? I feel like he had some messages deleted

@fuero Into here, or a new room?

new room
he's not on the chat site though
I feel guilty abusing comments to do that

2:15 PM
@fuero meh, I've done it. No biggie. Delete if after if it's a problem.

@MDMarra he left a link only answer, it was flagged LQ and was given the opportunity to improve it. He didn't and he indicated he wouldn't so it was deleted - happens daily for link only answers

oh right
he seemed confrontational
it's hard to talk about disliking java in a way that makes me dislike the person disliking java

2:32 PM

@ChrisS Yeah, see his new comment, showing off that he knows virtual memory is faster than reading from the hard disk? :/

@ChrisS wish I had that much fun in my job.

@HopelessN00b You're using the screwed up MS definition of Virtual Memory by the way... which the rest of computing calls swap.

@ChrisS True enough, but I think the distinction would be wasted on him anyway.

2:42 PM
Oh; yeah, he's got no clue.. I'm trying to be nice, but I got woke up this morning an hour early by a wife who's car was stuck in the road. I'm not in the mood to put up with anything today.

Yeah, I feel that. I've been installing printers on a new print server for the past two days, so my mood's even worse than usual too.

I hate Michigan

@fuero who did you invite?

@ewwhite l1mb0, but he didn't show up

@fuero He's a dick!

2:48 PM
@mossy How many inches?
4
I've got ~10" (about 30cm)

@ewwhite focus foils me today. Thanks for your answer on the ILO question :D

ping ALL THE PEOPLE

I had a foot of snow on my car this morning.
And i got home late.

@ChrisS If I had 10 inches, it would be much easier for me to get really hot dates.
2

@fuero HP-HP-HP! THey should hire me.

2:50 PM
@HopelessN00b Did you guys get anything but rain?

Or at least give you good swag on a regular basis.

@ewwhite I just extracted the firmware blob from their script, didn't look twice at the Readme.

HP hasn't given me any swag in years, and I buy way more these days.... Something about turning a profit..

@ChrisS No. And not much rain, either. Light drizzle overnight, not even enough to cut through the snow on the ground from earlier this week, and just cloudy, cold and windy ever since.

That's nothing to complain about; people 30 minutes north of me got 15+ inches of packing snow. That's enough to get small SUV/Trucks stuck.

2:53 PM
Finally back from Utah
My ass still hurts from sitting in crappy convention center chairs for four days

Some of the most expensive seminar chairs I've sat in were the most uncomfortable...

@ChrisS Depends on your perspective, I think. 15 inches of snow would mean a day off, so I'm a little salty that I have to install 60 more printers today instead of... sleeping and gaming and watching TV.

DAY OFF

DAY ON

Schrödinger's DAY!

2:56 PM
The day off weather totally split the Ohio Valley, so North and South of us got hit decently overnight, but not us. Oh well.

I could have worked from home, but I've got a 4x4 Explorer, so the only challenge in getting to work is driving around the stuck cars

@HopelessN00b 60?! Network or crummy local machines?

Not looking forward to this snow.

So after 4 days our CMS was finally upgraded to the latest version. Active collab had to do it manually because our database is "too big", and their upgrade script doesn't support it.

@fuero HP is like that. Use the firmware DVD's or the Service Pack for Proliant these days.

3:00 PM
Now my inbox is filling up with "Hey I'm missing attachments".

yes, but we need more

I guess we've started immature fridays already...anyone want to get a Yelling Bird tweet in?

what ?
is it friday ? wtf ?
how the F can it be friday ?

@tombull89 Network, print server for the main office. And the worst part is that I need to install them all at least 2, so... Ugh it's just gonna take a while and leave me in a mood to kill anyone who looks at me sideways.

inbound in 3...2...1...

3:04 PM
@ewwhite Actually, I noticed in our latest deployments that the firmware DVDs didn't seem to update iLO.

@HopelessN00b They'll bring them to a safe appropriate revision.
but I usually run firmware from an ILO-mounted image, so there's no reason not to just update the ILO via web interface

@ewwhite Ah, cool, that's probably what it was. 'course, a wise man once told me to be diligent about my HP firmware updates, so I made sure to update to the newest edition manually.

God this Dell sales rep keeps blowing it with me
He quoted the wrong RAID controller on 6 of the 8 systems
He really is doing his best to make my manager change his mind about buying HP.

You'd think I'd know by now...but if I ask this question (I will also post my own answer but want to hear other answers too) -- "DataCenter scheduled maintenance tasks" ....will it be considered shopping/learning material? I'm wanting to ask about things like having an electrician check circuits routinely, dry mop the floor, anti-static mats, plumbing checks for the fire system, FM-200 maintenance, a/c maintenance, etc.

3:13 PM
@MDMarra does his manager know this ?

@TheCleaner Not shopping, but maybe Not Constructive.

hmm...I looked at the canonicals here: meta.serverfault.com/questions/1986/… and saw the fire suppression one...so wasn't sure. I was hoping to get a broader consensus of answers beyond my own maintenance schedule

@TheCleaner I'd go for it, but don't be surprised if it gets closed.

@MDMarra moar ProLiants!

It's -1°C here, though it is sunny

It's supposed to blizzard in Philly and my umbrella is missing

It's snowing sideways here.

@MDMarra Well, the good news is that an umbrella does more harm than good when 15 inches of snow fall on it.

'PLEASE INSTALL PHPMYADMIN NOW WE CAN NOT CONTINUE UNTL THIS IS FINISHED"
Ok bros. you got it

@mossy I've already done that today. Wanna take credit for it and tell them it's already been installed?

3:50 PM
Yes. Thank you.

@HopelessN00b It's raining here now though :(
"We need phpMyAdmin installed. My code doesn't get compromised fast enough on its own!"

@ewwhite I don't stop them in the first place.

Because neither question has any answers.

oh that's problematic
