@Adrian That's actually pretty good... you'll get a lot of solid interns at that rate, especially if you're flexible enough to work around their college class schedules. :)
@84104 @Chopper3 It's a bloody homework question, most likely. Undergraduate student in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Current academic focus on networks and protocols.
@MichaelHampton Seems like a lot of effort. A better skill for navigating office politics is knowing how to make a body disappear with nothing more than a hacksaw and a dozen gallons of lye.
@MichaelHampton Am I being too nice by linking that kid a primer on SONET? I won't lose my BOFH credentials for that minimal amount of pity/mercy, will I? Or should I delete the answer just to be on the safe side?
I thought about it, but I'm not really sure what he's asking, and a simple primer on the topic is 34 pages of PDF... if someone could help narrow down the question, I'd be happy to post an answer to what he's probably asking. :)
A new manager filed a ticket asking for "a computer to be installed in a office". No idea where. Was queried as to where, she said she'd put a sign on that door.

I'm not sure why we hire managers that are less intelligent than the furniture they sit on.
Say, could one of you guys with the privilege reject my proposed SONET tag wiki and summary edits, so I can submit what I actually want? I hit <kbd>Enter<kbd> when I meant to do <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>Enter</kbd>.
@Andrew At that one site, it's 3/4ths of 1 building. The owner's still operate a branch office out of the top floor of the other half. We have the other half of the top and all the bottom.
We're up to 11 buildings that house 14 different office/program facilities.
As fscked-up crazy as this workplace is and as skin-flint thin as the budgeting is, it's a $26M .org.
@Zoredache in the context of Systems Administration? How so? I mean, it's not a horrible question as a general point of curiosity/seeking out knowledge, but by the time you're drilling down to how individual bits are parsed at the physical level, you're way past what's going to be useful to an SA.
@Andrew Well at least with Ethernet, and some adapters, I believe you can use software to adjust the Inter-Frame-Gap to tweak performance. Is the same true for Sonet?
Anyway, if it was possible, and how to tweak the framing might make it a sysadmin question.
