@MDMarra idk, maybe he's mouse-o-phobic

yeah

he can have vi-style command line editing. He'll come over to the dark side of mice shortly after :)

I mean you could do something like history | grep -m1 372 > /dev/clip but it's not guaranteeing that the 372nd command is the first one that has 372 in it
something in xargs or whatever to determine this is beyond my meager *nix skills

so... better question

He means ESC+CtrlE (forces expansion on the current command line)

5:03 PM
How can I use <kbd> inside codes...
@SmallClanger ooh, I did not know that

Spiceworks or Observium?

Observium for pretty pics.

Actually, wouldn't echo !372 > /dev/clip do what he needs it to?

@voretaq7 I was taught that one by a wise old master :)
What's the markdown for keypresses?

@SmallClanger <kbd></kbd>

5:05 PM
Ta

Hmm, my position has been eliminated...
Effective now.
now-ish....

@ewwhite Sorry to hear that
Shouldn't you be unplugging a bunch of unlabeled cables?

maybe

holy shit man :(

No, it seems a little odd.

5:11 PM
@ewwhite what, I thought ur boss wanted you to horror through kvm?

and nothing about a new position?

Ctrl-r will sort of do what that guy wants

I'm not worried, but I need to just understand the departure process...
I wasn't fired.

@ewwhite huh?

You're not fired, but you don't have a position?

5:12 PM
@ewwhite they're "restructuring"?

Position Available: KVM expert. Preferably with little to no vSphere experience.

Change in business strategy.

@ewwhite so what now?

Collect my things. Walk out.
say a couple of quick goodbyes.

how long did you work there?

5:17 PM
Jan1 - today

short :/ meh you will find a new job quick enough

you're a good guy with lots of knowledge
I hope the best for you.. stick around with us if you can

yeah, not going anywhere

@ewwhite look at the bright side, no more KVM worries :p

:)

5:26 PM
did they offer you a new position which you turned down? I dont get this

@ewwhite That sucks. Sorry to hear it.

@ewwhite Ouch, sorry to hear that bud

5:47 PM
The Puppet documentation color scheme changed literally overnight

@ewwhite :(

@ewwhite Move to LA! There's literally a dozen jobs for systems guys every week

does anyone know of a short english rhyme or text with the same word occuring in it about 3 times?

fuck the fucking fuckers! Or do they have to be identical?

@PeterGrace identical :p it's to illustrate find and replace

5:59 PM
I got nothing, then.

@Joel there's a second half to that story that is completely unrepresented.

@PeterGrace Link? I am interested

I don't know what it is, I'm just saying to beware of fear mongering
that's no better than what Fox News spits out about democrats

@PeterGrace at least they don't make spelling mistakes and are accurate about where the guy lives :p

6:02 PM
@PeterGrace I can't find any mainstream coverage of this

@LucasKauffman Wunwun was a race horse, Tutu was one too. Wunwun won one race, Tutu won one too.

@Ladadadada I like that :D

You might have troubles if you're going to try to dictate that to people...

Johnny was a little boy but Johnny is no more, for what Johnny thought was H2O was H2SO4!

hahaha

6:07 PM

6:25 PM
Fuzzy wuzzy was a bear, fuzzy wuzzy had no hair, fuzzy wuzzy wasn't very fuzzy, was he. =]

6:44 PM
@pauska Tokenless ring network?
@MDMarra !372:p
I can't believe nobody's hit on the way to do exactly what he's asking for without any fiddling.

@PeterGrace Someone should tell him he only has half of his fiber connector plugged in

@MikeyB Seems like there's a correct answer

@MarkHenderson haha, I noticed that too.

@MarkHenderson It'd make it better if he was goatse'ing the server

@MikeyB How do you goatse a server? Or do I not want to know?

6:50 PM
@MarkHenderson I assume it has something to do with the exhaust fans?

@MarkHenderson Well look at the picture, looks like he's probing it.

Hah
I guess it does
And.. is that a Dell Optiplex on its side with its CD-ROM drive missing that he has his hand inside?
I think they took that photo as a joke and it somehow ended up inside that book

Well, I found the first thing that sucks about PRTG. Moving devices from one grouping to another sucks AND blows.

Evening all :)
My evening isn't going to great
Compiling some new Dynamcs AX release and it's failing
failing hard
ugh

7:10 PM
@BartDeVos still bussy with work?

@LucasKauffman Yep
Call came in at 13h30
bussy eversince

@BartDeVos is it paid :p?

@LucasKauffman I hope so

A: ftp directory upload

WesleyDavidYou're likely hung in an SSL negotation. Add set ftp:ssl-allow off to either your individual command or your ~/.lftprc file. E.g. lftp -e "set ftp:ssl-allow off; mirror -R /root/temp/mail /mail1" -u user,pass dest_ip If you set it in your config, just know that you're keeping yourself from usin...

I lol'd
=)

@WesleyDavid you remind me, there's a street cat here that just got kittens, going to give them a bit of food

7:12 PM
@LucasKauffman Be good to kittehs. We'll remember you when the bloody revolution begins.

did you see yesterdays SP episode :p it was about kitties that were going to take over the world

@LucasKauffman That wasn't an episode - that was a training video.

Hah. I disappear to the pub for 90 minutes and have 7 upvotes on a nerdy question, that really should be on U+L :)
7
A: How to copy a previously entered command using the history utility without running it again?

SmallClangerHow about, put this on your command line: $ !372 Then press ESC followed by CTRL+E. This will autoexpand on the command line without actually running it. (also expands everything else on the line, including env vars) This only works on Bash, as far as I'm aware.

@SmallClanger +1 one from me
@SmallClanger ... but about this pub trip... why am I not at a pub?

@WesleyDavid couldn't see her kittens, but she took the sausage and ran with it somewhere

7:23 PM
@LucasKauffman D'AWWWWW

@WesleyDavid I love how cats mix cute & cuddly with ripping your face off and chewing on it.

@JeffFerland That's a good question. I've just left one myself. I was at that two pint point where I either go home now, or I go home in 4 hours time and lose most of Saturday.

Well, does feel like time to skip out.
Fridays and all that
... and the president is in town one mile away, so traffic is going to suck

Lovely. That'll be a fun drive.

Joe Biden was in town yesterday. They closed the freeways.
Being in Obama's hometown is a curse in that respect.

7:29 PM
@WesleyDavid By the way. Is that a penis?
4
(Thought I'd just create that mental image before I headed for the bus. Night all)

@SmallClanger It is if you want it to be.

@SmallClanger Part of me has been wondering if they're using blue for the white house press pass again today... I'd like to re-use mine :P

@SmallClanger And the latecomer with the correct answer is way down at the bottom with 0 upvotes :(

@MikeyB I'm going to blame question interpretation... I read the Q as asking for a way to get it on the ocmmand line, not print it out
Anyway, migration time

@JeffFerland Oh actually, rereading it, yeah yours is better. I need to add an up-arrow to mine.

7:32 PM
Sprucing up careers.stackoverflow.com profile...
Migrate to unix?

Is it just me, or has outlook had plenty of time to PERFECT AND NOT FUCK UP THE SIMPLE TASK OF READING AND SENDING MAIL

Not as long as Lotus has had time to fix treating e-mail as a database to be replicated

@PeterGrace I think you mean "Application" now. Because your email is now an application.

Oh FFS
who else has money invested in mega millions? It'll be even more awesome if no jackpots happen tonight
how high will it go then? Could you imagine a billion dollar lottery?

@PeterGrace I'm almost as tired of hearing about Mega Millions as I am The Hunger Games.

7:44 PM
@PeterGrace Or when the jackpot is split 500 ways.

@WesleyDavid oh yeah?

Which, BTW, I bought the trilogy on Kindle and finished the first book last night. Could suck worse, but... seems rather flat. Meh.

Well, ya know, if you enter into it expecting it to suck, it will suck
I actually bought it because I saw a hot chick on the train reading it back in october, so I was like, hmm, that sounds like an interesting title AND if she sees me reading it, maybe we'd get in a convo about it.

@PeterGrace one of my friends worked the math. If you play every possible combination you'll double your money.

@WesleyDavid It's great and everything, but the media was turning the whole thing into a spectacle bigger than LotR. And it's no LotR.

7:46 PM
I guess that's kind of weird to think about.
@voretaq7 there was a google news story about that this morning. They said it'd take 28 years to fill out all the required cards.

@PeterGrace … I've done that.

@MikeyB FOREVER BOOKISHLY ALONE
except I'm married with kids so nevermind

@PeterGrace can't I just feed the values to a machine?

@PeterGrace I'm so telling your wife.

:P
@voretaq7 replace write with punch touchscreen
honestly, these days I'd take the fucking punchcard
I went to Wawa this morning at 5am to buy tickets because I knew it'd be empty
fucking machine was apparently offline the night before so it decided it had to batch-and-forward 46 transactions from the night before AFTER IT TOOK MY MONEY
had to stand there 10 mins waiting before my ticket finally popped out

7:51 PM
@PeterGrace First world problems.

Truth.

Hey, I gave $20 to the Mega millions pool at work. What if they win?
Grrrr....

@ewwhite LOL
@ewwhite sorry dude ;)
OK, 4pm, I got trains to catch. Have a good weekend everyone!

Lata

@YanickGirouard I just wanted to pop in and say thanks for being patient with me in my thread about domain authentication over wireless. Gotta go for now. Have a good weekend!
Also...
@PeterGrace Why does it look like his hand is stuck in the CD-ROM bay?

8:02 PM
5 hours ago, by voretaq7
@jscott he's "managing" it.

@PeterGrace y can't we script that?

Q: why can't i find chat button link on server faults like its in Stack overflow?

TimeToThinewell title explains it all, just made a server fault account and wanted to chat with people about servers but can't find link to chat rooms :S cheers

this is all over my work email
happy friday.

hi
@MikeyB thanks for passing me the link :)

@TimeToThine Yeah, that's actually the generic stackexchange chat link. You can get all the rooms from the chat link on any site.

@MikeyB aha thats nice , Anyway actually i want to develop a portal or website, that will gonna let people to upload pictures, and add information about something particular and other people can view it, after paying a price, So I have been told that shared hosting isn't the best option here and I should be getting own servers. and because I am a noob I need information about what type of servers would i require :)

@TimeToThine TomTom often suggests that he will hosts sites like that from his cell phone.
4

8:45 PM

@Zoredache didn;t get that lol

@TimeToThine Oh, it is his generic goto sarcastic answer whenever someone asks a server sizing question and doesn't provide any useful details at all.

@WesleyDavid haha Standard ! lol

I any case, we can't tell you what you need. You need to figure it out. Server sizing is extremely localized, and the only way you are going to figure it out is either to guess or test.
or possibly guess, test, and repeat until you know what you need.

@TimeToThine Or you could hire one of the many IT consultants who hang in the chat room... like... oh... me! We can make wild guesses with the best of them! =)

8:51 PM
@WesleyDavid am a IT consultant myself ;) , only difference is, ama Noob :D LOL !
2

@WesleyDavid Of course you probably would spend a few hours interrogating him, trying to cough up the important details, before you make that guess.

@TimeToThine oh nice, what's your specialty?

@LucasKauffman SharePoint :)

@TimeToThine ksss ksss ksss go away ksss ksss
:p

Get him into a darkened room with a bright light shining in his eyes. Then keep yelling. How man IOPS do you need, until he cracks.

8:52 PM
@TimeToThine Oh god....

haha thats too warming welcome for a sharepoint consultant :L

sharepoint and consultant, you've hit the jackpot!

@Aaron I hear the jackpot is worth a lot today
$640 million
... nobody will ever need more than $640 million :D (-the Ghost of Misquoted Gates)

@JeffFerland But you have to remember that more then 50% of that is going straight back to the government.

@Zoredache I'll pocket half and live a happy life.
Hmmm, most of that is federal income tax. I wonder what the law on that is for a foreign national...

8:56 PM
@Zoredache Uhhh... uhhh... yeah... that's the ticket. I'll just... uhh... do all that.

Anyway guys back to my question :D lol

@TimeToThine You need some servers. And some bandwidth. Some electricity. Maybe some software.

@WesleyDavid being told that when I was in grade 9 of school lol

/me sits on @WesleyDavid. Cat!
we need /me actions.

@TimeToThine You also need kittehs.
Well, @Reb made a little widgety thing that does that, but then the latest version of chat rolled out and broke the user script.

So in other words, @Reb destroys everything.

9:03 PM
@TimeToThine well, if your application is written as efficient as sharepoint, you will need 32 GB of RAM and 2 hexacore CPU's :p

@WesleyDavid Had like 5 of them including there mum, buh now I got some pigoens :D

@LucasKauffman No, that's emacs.

@TomOConnor there is a user-script somewhere.

brb

the userscript has been fixed for ages
it was fixed the same day it broke (;

9:04 PM
@RebeccaChernoff And you didn't email me?! =(

um, no.

@RebeccaChernoff /me runs and cries
@TimeToThine Are you making the next Facebook?

@WesleyDavid I'm tempted to call that a success... (;

@TimeToThine Quick-n-Dirty: Figure out the average Kb load of each page. Figure out the execution load of rendering each page. Estimate a reasonable amount of traffic to start with. Then you know what you need. You'll be fine with a VPS to start with, most likely. Scale your application by tiering it first, then beef up the hardware.
Unless it's porn or warez, you probably won't be dealing with hundreds of thousands of requests a day.
Even then, farming out the pictures to a CDN, putting a reverse caching proxy in front and also caching the CMS content itself can go a very long ways.
Choose your CMS wisely too.

@WesleyDavid hmmm sounds like a plan , and nope its not porn lol, its more like Stack exchange, but totally different area of business :)

9:16 PM
@RebeccaChernoff got the tshirt and stickers btw. Great shirt, just wish it had the serverfault name/logo on it. Would be cool to wear it at tech ed :)

@TimeToThine saying lol in every single post makes me want to facepunch someone.
2

lol

haha , feeling better ? :P lol :L

@Zoredache click on the avatar select penultimate option :)

And I thought I was mean. =)
@TimeToThine Are you using one of the open StackExchange CMSs?

9:20 PM
@Iain I don't have the really good options as just a room owner.

@Zoredache I don't think that's what @Iain meant.

@WesleyDavid never heard of open stackExchange CMSs tbh

@Zoredache everyone has that option

@TimeToThine Like stacked or openoverflow
@Zoredache Not the nuclear option, just the tactical mortar strike option.

@WesleyDavid Nope am actually not

9:22 PM
Go go gadget tiny avatar!!!
@TimeToThine Okay, so just a different forum software? But people upload pictures? And add other content? And have to pay? You are sooo making a porn site and not telling.
=P

Q: Web applications inspired by Stack Exchange's system

AndrijaListed here are clones of the Stack Exchange sites model.

@WesleyDavid I saw youtube.com/watch?v=QQGVoMRAiiA and thought of you

@WesleyDavid LMAO, trust me its not porn lol
and i tried once and it was a mission :| to get tiny avatar back in days

@Iain I woulda used a light saber youtube.com/watch?v=NtgtMQwr3Ko
FINGERS! HOW DO THEY EVEN WORK?!
@TimeToThine What CMS are you using? Joomla? Drupal?

thinking about using Ruby on Rails :)

@TimeToThine Ohh, so developing your own custom CMS. Gotcha. Yeah, I'm not sure about rails optimization.

9:30 PM
Double your memory requirements.

With a out of the box CMS, there's usually decent support for plugins that will turn dynamic content into static content as applicable. You'll have to roll your own for that now.

@Zoredache 2 x unknown is still unknown

@Iain LMAO :L

@Iain Yes, well the point is, whatever number he guesses, he probably needs more.

@TimeToThine Yeah, get a 1GB VPS to start with, no less. Preferably 2GB.
Unmanaged Linux 2GB cloud server with 50GB outbound bandwidth from Rackspace is under $100USD - Not bad.

9:37 PM
Anyone used Fujitsu Server hardware?

@TomOConnor Not I. I am always surprised at how far up the commodity server list they are for numbers sold.
Also I always do a double take when I see a glowing "Siemens" logo in a rack. Not common in America.

We might be buying 3 of them at work for VMware usage.

@TomOConnor What's your gut feel about that?

@WesleyDavid They're servers. They could be a lot worse.

@TomOConnor Are they on the HCL?

9:41 PM
I mean.. I'd rather HPs.
If i knew what models they were.

@TomOConnor Could be Gateway PCs running GeoWorks.
@TomOConnor An HP person! I always knew you were awesome.

Our HP Microservers run Vmware.
unexpectedly.

@TimeToThine ah I see you found your way into our little den of iniquity

Me: "IT consulting company, how can I help you?"
Client: "Yes, my Presario server is acting funny..."
Me: *click*
@voretaq7 We make quite a din in this den.

9:44 PM
@voretaq7 HULK SMASH!!!

forums.gideontech.com/index.php?topic=36211.0 <- MOAR compaq presario server!
I think if Hulk tried to smash he might break his hand...

Sam
@voretaq7 I like that it's a "Server Desktop", some kind of hybrid monster?

@Sam no no - it looks like an actual (deskside or 6U) server
external SCSI ports and everything!

Sam
@voretaq7 and don't forget the speakers!

9:47 PM
@Sam speakers?
oh. Those aren't part of the server.
They probably cost extra.

Sam
Shame, what's a server without speakers and an original compaq keyboards

@Sam Only if they're monitor-mounted earspeakers

Sam
@Joel oooh, luxury
@Joel preferably ones that have been there long enough that the magnets have damaged the screen.

@Sam Those are a boutique configuration. Very rare

@Joel you need compensating magnets

9:56 PM
@voretaq7 You'd figure that the magnets on the opposite sides would cancel. The solution is MORE MAGNETS

@Joel the solution is ALWAYS more magnets :-D

@TimeToThine Did you just say that you are a SharePoint consultant and you're thinking about using Rails?
@TimeToThine SharePoint is to Rails as "LOL" at the end of a sentence is to ";" at the end of a statement in code. They are for different kinds of people.

@MilesErickson Sharepoint is for people with money

@TimeToThine I have never met a Rails developer who would be willing to build a site in Sharepoint.
@voretaq7 ...and yet, given unlimited resources...

@MilesErickson ulimit 0

10:05 PM
@MilesErickson but is the opposite also true? Have you never met a Sharepoint person who wants to get the hell out of that mess and use something better?

@Zoredache yes. Sometimes they get religion

@Zoredache No. That's exactly why @TimeToThine's assertion was confusing to my brain.

10:29 PM
@MilesErickson I work as a sharepoint consultant for a Private firm but I want to start my own business, so as noob to web application development am investigating from scratch for things i need to start my analysis on the IDEA i got :)

@ChrisS Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy. A kid'll eat ivy, too. Wouldn't you?

discussion getting a little crazy!
sysadmins...

@WesleyDavid thanks for your suggestions, defiantly they gonna help me in building this web application :)

@TimeToThine Tier first. Add resources second.

@TimeToThine "defiantly" Every time I see that, I picture a supervillain raging at the world

10:33 PM
@wfaulk Shakes fist

@wfaulk I can't even blame iPhone intellisense here :L

@WesleyDavid Exactly

anyway guys gonna sleep nearly midnight at london, talk 2 u laters !

@TimeToThine laters ZZZzzzzz...
Hey, @ewwhite
yo #sysadmin folk, I know of a business looking for some cloud assistance in the chicago area. know anyone?

:)
I'm looking

10:37 PM
well, ok, let me qualify that. i think they just need an IT person to figure out what they really need. #sysadmin

that's fine...
I have a consulting business.. I can help out.

Tweet up home boy and invoice like a boss.

What's tweeting? :)

sigh You old timers. =P

Send them my Careers page/profile :)
or linkedin... Or should I try tweeting...
no, I'd end up in a sex scandal...

10:41 PM
@ewwhite Will do. I just tweeted at him.
Is this a fair assessment of your expertise in 160 chars or less?
@patcable I know a boss Chicago SysAdmin with internal / external cloud experience. All around wizard. Want his contact info?

Reasonable... I'm feeling less skilled than I should at the moment, but that's fair.

You're so boss, you can order Hugo around and he just says "okay..."

But off to dinner... for now

@ewwhite I'll let you know what he says.

kk

11:42 PM
@WesleyDavid use your cute eyes to convince him
