In an article that should surprise nobody here:
"Incompetent people are too incompetent to know they’re incompetent: study"
http://www.therecord.com/living/article/678279--incompetent-people-are-too-incompetent-to-know-they-re-incompetent-study
Morning, Bastards.

@MikeyB I was expecting theonion.com for that URL...

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which the unskilled suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes. Actual competence may weaken self-confidence, as competent individuals may falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. As Kruger and Dunning conclude, "the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others" (p. 1...

@84104 Didn't you know that everyone is above average?
@84104 On a sad note, studies show that 50% of babies are uglier than average.

@MikeyB I tend to think of myself as average in most things, because I have the highest sample rate of all my observations.

@MikeyB and 50% of 3rd graders are below average in reading skills!

7:07 PM
@MikeyB Did that study also say that 99.8% of the parents of said babies believe their child is above average?

@PeterGrace, aware of the free replacement to Flight Sim X? microsoft.com/games/flight

@tombull89 That's just a way to convince people to install Silverlight.

@MikeyB OHSHI-. Sorry.
Microsoft Flight is the title of a new flight simulation game from Microsoft Studios announced in August 2010. Originally, it was thought that it was intended to replace the long-running discontinued Microsoft Flight Simulator franchise that had existed for nearly 30 years, but information revealed later proved that it was a separate product. The simulation game will be offered "free-to-play", only charging gamers for downloading extra content, aircraft or scenery. Development The simulator is in later development stages, with a beta version currently in closed testing. Limited details...

@tombull89 Ooohhhhhh I thought you actually played it on the website. It's out tomorrow, I see. :p Never mind.
@tombull89 And I'm messing with you :p

@MikeyB no, although that would be cool.
S'okay, I should have noticed it needed Silverlight. I held off for ages but it got me in the end.

7:15 PM
Someone needs to build a MMO flight simulator. Then some people can work as air traffic controllers and so on.

@Zoredache you already have ATC by users in fsx

Oh, and we also need the TSA people who can go around to anyone and use a nude-scanner on them.

Q: Selective Routing Between Subnets

JoeI have a configuration with two subnets. For this example I will call them 192.168.1.128/26 (128) and 192.168.1.64/26 (64). The 64 subnet contains all the internal devices that guests should not be able to access. The 128 subnet is basically the wireless broadcast subnet. My problem is that...

I have pilots raiding in my wow guild...

7:16 PM
what is this guy asking ?
I just wonder if MS flight is going to be any good, especially with their whole new DLC system and half arcade style flying

@LucasKauffman What he wants doesn't work in linksys- he needs vlans I think

That's what I thought
but where does he get the lists from ?

An AD enabled DNS server
afaik

@Basil VLAN? I think I would suggest he used a VPN of some sort to authenticate access to the trusted network.

well

7:19 PM
what the hell do I know, I'm a storage guy

@Zoredache At least, I've never played properly online, but I believe it's pretty intense with people getting a bit narked if you do something a bit wrong.

you don't really need a 'vlan enabled router', but he's going to need a lot of help to get where he's going

@tombull89 uhhh, what?

@tombull89 they do on FSX, especially when you don't follow fly patterns or spawn on the runway

Can someone actually approve my self delete request on that routing question?

7:24 PM
yea

evil

@LucasKauffman Syntax error seems more appropriate for the second verse where you are sad and you know it.

@tombull89 Dunno, but I dont own X at the moment. I think the last FS I owned was 2005 or something.

Oh Outlook 2003, you treacherous wench!
2

@84104 My favorite part is how people working in Mental Health believe that they're not subject to cognitive bias simply by dint of knowing that such a thing exists. It's kind of hilarious.

7:37 PM
I have MSFS2004 but I never got around to buying X

@Aaron isn't a lot of difference between appart from graphics

@Ethabelle Uninstall the Business Contact Manager. It always borks things up
That and the fact that it's 2003

Hey now. As Outlook 2k3 didn't suck as much as Lotus Notes 8.x did.

nothing sucks like lotus notes

I thought Notes always sucked

7:39 PM
Notes8 with the full integration suite with Sametime & Lotus Office REALLY sucked. It made brand-new laptops with maxed out RAM crawl.

it sucks hard enough to pull a bowling ball through a straw

The best part was IBM Support installed a Outlook > Notes migration app on our laptops, but it was shareware and would only do 300 messages before exiting and whining for $50.

which reminds me, still enjoying the painkillers @Holocryptic ?

I love O2010. Two of my users have it and haven't had a problem for ... 6 months :D !

7:41 PM
@RobMoir Nope :( No more...
They interact with my other meds

doh

I'm feeling better though

that's good

@Ethabelle I've seen a few quirky things on 2010. Especially on XP
@RobMoir well, mostly better...
still kinda fucked up

then i'm mostly glad you're mostly b etter

7:43 PM
@Ethabelle I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the Ribbon UI sucks ass

o2010 works well with exchange autoconfigure. Beats having to script profile files the way we used to

@RobMoir assuming you configure Exchange correctly :)

yes, failure to do that is when i've seen o2010 act up

We're all on Office 2010, have been for over a year.

I like how when you search for 'Lotus Notes' there's two to three websites devoted to how it sucks.

7:44 PM
@wfaulk Only people who haven't got used to it say that.

i like the ribbon. took a while to get used to, but once you are its ok

@ChrisS Been using Office 2007 for two years - still a no-go for me.

I'm accustomed to a Ribbon interface now and the old toolbar interface, that sucks.
@tombull89 The Office 2010 Ribbon is better, no more Office Jewel either.

what you want is a command line interface that appears at the top of your apps. someone should invent that
i can just see end users trying to type in "I want to make a table please"

@ChrisS Yeah, I'm hoping we go to 2010 in the summer, looking forward to a more "simple" ribbon.

7:46 PM
@RobMoir Erm... like Clippy???

@wfaulk I love the Ribbon UI ;P

sudo make me a sandwich

@Ethabelle why? you like shit moving around on you or disappearing when you resize a window? You hate customizing toolbars?

no... like the command line ui that failbuntu are apparently working on for masturbating mastodon, or whatever their next release is called.

Wow, that is impressive.

@ChrisS It's like a double rainbow!

It would be cooler if they where all pluged running a screen-saver or something.

And burning enough watts to turn off the baseboard heaters.

7:49 PM
@wfaulk There is still a level of customization with the ribbon stuff, but for the casual/standard user it's perfect.

Magneets, how do they work?

@Ethabelle so, for people who would be clicking everything before asking someone else how to use it anyway

@ChrisS want

the heating has failed in one wing of my college. the staff have been issued with electric heaters by our facilities team... which blow their wing's electric supply fuses, leading to no light, no computers and still no heat... fun!

@RobMoir It is good that someone in the FOSS community is trying to create something original and not just cloning MS/Apple features, but some of what Ubuntu really doesn't seem that great.

7:51 PM
@Zoredache Bloody Hell. All our user-facing terminals here are Ubuntu and even I think the new stuff sucks.

@RobMoir Your facilities team should be fired.

@voretaq7 I've only got 3 CRTs left, and only two work... They'll all go the next time I run to the recycler, which should be in the very near future.

@Zoredache I'd agree with all of that
@Holocryptic they're between a rock and a hard place. If they don't issue the heaters then our lecturers go on about how cold they are and suggest they should be fired because of that

@ChrisS I've still got a DELL CRT in the attic - beast of a screen, brilliant, still.

@RobMoir Well, they could tell them to man up and put on a sweater, or cancel class, cuz when you plug in a bunch of space heaters you blow fuses

7:54 PM
oh i agree. That suggestion has been forwarded to the appropriate people already

I'm watching the Ubuntu HUD thing and it looks shitty

I had people do that at my old job. It was annoying

I don't get it

@MDMarra it looks to me like Quicksilver++

no kidding

7:55 PM
I don't want it to replace other UI elements, but it seems a reasonable addition

even spotlight does an awful lot of that right now

it seems to be designed by geeks for geeks.

@MDMarra I've had spotlight disabled for years now

Why?

its primary function seems to be to slow down your computer
constant HD churn

7:57 PM
I haven't noticed any

probably not a big deal on a desktop machine

Have you had it disabled since 10.3? :)

pretty much, yeah

@LucasKauffman This is probably the saddest thing I've ever seen:

haha, it's a lot better than it used to be

7:57 PM

@SmallClanger Wrong version of dos/

Halp! I can't save any files to the network or the local drive. Me: Oh. You've filled the drive with 200G of crap. Remove it and try it again.
Whattaya know, Win2k3 runs like crap when it has 47M of space left.

looks like mSO has a new feature trialing

@Iain The rep thing?

8:05 PM
ooooohhhh

@MDMarra can you go to mSO and just leave a tab open on it to see if you get it too

You mean open a tab but not have it be active for a bit?

on mSO yes

sure thing
Nothing seems to be happening

@MDMarra That's a common problem as you get older.

8:11 PM
@MDMarra I haven't got any changes either

Hello Everyone

@Jacob hiya

@Iain maybe it's for questions that you've participated in?

nah - I'm not really active on mSo
Just got one

@Adrian Win 2k3 crashes when it runs out of space. Something I'm glad they fixed in 2008 & R2

8:21 PM
gave my $8.75 + postage and handling on the ports question
@ChrisS EVERYTHING crashes when it runs out of space - it just depends on the crash characteristics

So I created a storage user's group on linkedin.
One which will viciously ban anyone posting marketing or sales

jezus christ

@voretaq7 I've had a Win2008 system with 0 bytes left on C: and it didn't crash. I RDP'd into it, deleted some crap, kept right on ticking.

@LucasKauffman yes? dons robe and bad wig
@ChrisS "I RDP'd into it, deleted some crap, kept right on ticking." -- You got to it before it crashed :-)

a guy from school was asked by a tv station to be followed for 7 hours to see what he does with his smartphone. They then asked to show them certain apps he didnt have. Now they produced the whole thing "Smartphone addict, being in love with your smartphone"

8:23 PM
Eventually all systems with zero space will crash. FreeBSD will happily truck on for days/weeks/months with / full, then one day something critical needs to write there and BOOM!

painting him off as a guy whos constantly stairing at his phone

@voretaq7 It had been that way for roughly 3 days...

@ChrisS See also Ivonova's philosophy on "Boom":

@voretaq7 it detonates the hard drives sending shrapnel flying everywhere ?
btw where have u been the last couple of days :o ?

@LucasKauffman 0rk sp0rk p0rk h0rk bj0rk...w0rk :(

8:25 PM
:(

@voretaq7 What show is that?

@ChrisS Babylon 5

Ah; never got into that show for some reason.

@ChrisS you have to suffer through season 1, and half of season 2. Then it gets good.

Something like BSG season 2.5?

8:27 PM
@ChrisS yeah effectively
there are some early gems though:

I keep meaning to watch B5 but keep forgetting

@Aaron I keep meaning to forget, but INSUFFICIENT BEWZ

Isn't it shot in 4:3 as well?

Yeah, I tried to watch B5, but my now Ex was so fangirl about it that I was kinda turned off.

@Adrian it really is worth watching. It's very rare to find SciFi with an actual story arc

8:40 PM
@voretaq7 Stargate

@Jacob mmm, not as much
stargate has a LOT of filler
Atlantis and SGU less so, but they got killed off before they could develop.

Love me some B5.

@voretaq7 plot= Massive alien force that wants to destory take over earth. They try to stop it and pull it off. Rinse and repeat 10 seasons

@Jacob that's not a story arc though, that's Monster of the Week with relatively consistent monsters for 8 seasons.

@voretaq7 My favorite show for awhile was Burn notice, until I saw the Season 5 cliffhanger....

8:45 PM
@voretaq7 to be fair, SGU was ... bad

don't get me wrong, I love stargate, but B5 has an actual story arc: Ancient enemy stirs, bad shit starts to happen, the universe goes to hell in a handcart, big ass war ensues, little-ass wars ensue cleaning up the mess, and then season 5... well Claudia Christian left and things kinda went to shit a little bit there, and they tried to cram too many things into one season.

@Zypher very bad...

@Zypher It didn't have to be though - it was more of a disappointment than atlantis.
they could have made that a great series, but... no.

very true

It was the Voyager of the SG universe. And Voyager may have had more redeeming qualities than SGU :/

8:46 PM
@voretaq7 Everyone was like WTF did you cancel Atlantis for?This BS.

@voretaq7 wasn't voyager, just the Red Dwarf, of the star trek universe?

@Jacob I honestly didn't care for atlantis. It had potential, but it was obviously a money-grabbing spinoff. Plus they eliminated two of my favorite characters.

@voretaq7 Voyager was mediocre, SGU was Rush being a dick all the time

@Zoredache don't insult Red Dwarf -- that was so bad it was good.

@voretaq7 oh who?

8:47 PM
and the main characters had consistent hair.
@Jacob ST:V was Janeway being SuperbitchCaptainLady and changing her hair every week :)

@voretaq7 don't forget surrendering every other episode

@voretaq7 You just hate women

it also featured a remake of Spock's Brain

@wfaulk she didn't have a choice - that ship was a fuckin' space hoopty.
@wfaulk yeah. yeah it did.
@Holocryptic that's beside the point - I hate men too.

Anyway, Most of Star Trek, or at least most of it while Roddenberry was still alive was just thinly veiled morality plays.

8:49 PM
^ Obligatory Space Hoopty ^

Fringe has a good story arc, FWIW

@Zoredache I'm OK with that.

The story was just a vehicle for Gene to preach peace, love, and can't we all just get along.

@Zoredache that's fine though, because it was framed in a decent story
god bless D C Fontana and company.

@voretaq7 Speaking ships, the Prometheus design was dumb, it was like a 100 miles long and had 0 Fucking guns. It just flew around and took shit.

8:52 PM
@Jacob Perfectly valid design.

@voretaq7 Prometheus?\

@voretaq7 mmhmmm

1) Build shield system.
2) Put ship inside.
3) Fly around and give everyone the finger.

@Jacob According to Wikipedia: The Prometheus is armed with 24 railguns, a close-in weapons system, and 16 missile batteries
not that I've ever watched the show

Does it cite sources, or is it some dweeb still framing it and picking stuff out?

8:53 PM
@Jacob besides IIRC most of that space was engines and power sources :)

@voretaq7 The X-303 has LAZERZ. Your arguement is invalid
@voretaq7 The X-303 looked cooler

@Jacob Lets not go into THAT design's checkered past.

@voretaq7 explain?

@Jacob The Spruce Goose looks cool!

@Holocryptic no citation

8:55 PM
And that's why I have a problem with wikipedia

None of them are Space Battleship Yamato, though

@Holocryptic It's in a SG episode.

@Jacob X301... X302....
^^ It can fly! It can fly! See? See? (holy mother of god don't pull up -- keep it in ground effect or we'll all DIE!)

Hey, what defines a "unicorn" sysadmin?

lolwut

8:57 PM
@JeffFerland one that only a virgin can ride?

@Jacob [citation needed]

@JeffFerland quantity of horn?

Nevermind

misread "unicom"?

No. As in the real jackass of all trades... your top tier guys that you pay obscenely well.

8:59 PM
needs a beard
