Curses! Rep-crapped at 260. Can only mean that it's time for a short nap.

I'm rep-capped, too. :D This is a novel experience for me. :D

I rep capped two days ago when I wasn't even here.

@KatherineVillyard Key to rep-capping is to answer questions that appear in the network-wide sidebar
Gotta go for the low-hanging fruit

Yes, I think I'm learning that!

12:02 AM
@MarkHenderson Naa, it's too late for those questions

@MichaelHampton Right, answer them before they get there :P

Both times it was that network-wide sidebar!

I just post a bunch of shit, and somehow it all gets upvoted.

Go for questions with novel, comedic or controversial titles

@MichaelHampton Yeah, yeah, always gotta be one showboat in the crowd. :p I don't need to take this b... screw it, I'm overdue for my nap anyway! :)

12:03 AM
Although I was late to the infamous "Our auditor is an idiot" question and still ended up 2nd highest voted - I was several hours late

I enjoyed that one very much after the fact. I sent it to all my nerdy friends.

@MarkHenderson or asking borderline evil questions >_>

And yet "I've decided to expose my SQL Server to the Internet, how do I protect it?" didn't end up on that sidebar.
Or if it did, I missed it.
OK, it's time for me to hit the road. (I do odd times to avoid traffic.)
See y'all!

Cya
Have a good night

12:19 AM
@MarkHenderson: mind if I edit in a link to the wikipedia link for CPE into your answer? It wasn't immediately apparent to me till I looked it up, and it might be useful ;p

@JourneymanGeek Go for it

cool, done.

1 hour later…
1:31 AM
Just because it's worth repeating...

kce
1:45 AM
What's up my nerds?

nada

kce
You're not breaking an ESXi or ZFS install? What the heck?

I'm done with computers today

kce
Good for you. Computers are stupid. Bikes are cool.

I hear the .bike domain is now open for registrations.

1:50 AM
should I squat?

@ewwhite OATS AND SQUATS

Sure is fit in here.

@ewwhite Don't bother. Wesley probably won't buy a .bike either.
5

@MichaelHampton Did anyone buy all of the @Wesley related bike domains yet?

@KatherineVillyard But you are flush with kudzu. You could probably ski on that. Until it ate you.

2:00 AM
Should I just ask Windows questions from now on?

@ewwhite Apparently! Expect a dozen answers if you do.

@ewwhite Isn't that, itself, a Windows question?

perhaps... but that means nobody is willing to resolve my ZFS on Fusion-io with DRBD replication issues...
punks

@ewwhite DRBD + ZFS?? Eww...

@ShaneMadden why do you say? I'm testing this: dnuk.com/zetavault/features

2:06 AM
@ewwhite So DRBD is what they're using for their "replication"?

@ShaneMadden ZFS replication is there... but yes, DRBD is their "cluster" and "failover solution"

@ewwhite Gotcha. What's busted with it?

Nothing at all... it actually works quite well...
heartbeat, failover, VIP

@ewwhite Nice.

it's surprisingly nice...
as I always wanted an HA ZFS solution

2:09 AM
@ewwhite Yeah, that's one thing that's always been an annoying gap.

but obviously, this only scales so far.
two relatively-small boxes
because, well... you'd end up having to double resources

Well, those might not get you 7 answers, but I'll try to help if you ask any questions on it :)

i always hear that drbd sucks
why?

durbid

Crickets...
"DRBD+Windows!!!"

Q: Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration Connection Broker connects to localhost

Mark HendersonI am running the following command from a PowerShell console on a Windows 8 machine, trying to configure a Server 2012 R2 RDS Connection Broker: Import-Module RemoteDesktop Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration -CollectionName "Example" -CustomRdpProperty "gatewayhostname:s:rdp.example.com" -Conn...

@MarkHenderson "It's the same story if I do Enter-PSSession ep-ts01.ad.example.com and run it from there." -- do you mean that command fails with "winrm not enabled" as well?

@jscott Not quite; I get this:
Get-RDSessionCollection : A Remote Desktop Services deployment does not exist on ep-ts01.ad.lifeway.net.au. This
operation can be performed after creating a deployment. For information about creating a deployment, run "Get-Help
New-RDVirtualDesktopDeployment" or "Get-Help New-RDSessionDeployment".
It looks like Microsoft haven't quite got this remote management downpat just yet
Interestingly, the RDS in the Server Manager can configure everything just fine - but it doesn't expose the property I want to edit
(which is not the gateway one; I just used that as an example)

3:00 AM
My home made (cilantro-free) falafel @iain @magellan

@MDMarra Did you make the tahini as well?

Wife did

Good teamwork
Next step: Pita-from-scratch.

and in fairness she made the falafel as well, I just made them patties and cooked them

Looks good, would eat.

3:04 AM
I want to try a lighter oil next time. We just cooked them in vegetable oil
It was still good though.

btw, I think my parents had those exact Corelle plates when I was a kid.

Haha. I inherited these from my parents

Is there cilantro in falfel normally? I honestly don't know. Love the stuff. When I make steak tacos, we skip lettuce totally and just mince a whole bundle of cilantro instead.
I know some people think cilantro tastes "soapy".

Cilantro, parsley, chickpea, and onion basically
wife dislikes cilantro so we don't have it, but it normally gives it a greener tint
It's pretty quick to make if you have a food processor
Oh and a shit ton of garlic

Just keep slipping cilantro into your tabbouleh in slightly greater amounts each time.

3:12 AM
Haha

I'd read the anti-cilantro thing was genetic, but it would be fun to have a blind test.

The Linux firewall is getting replaced again... though most of you won't see it for 4-5 years more.

@MichaelHampton I had an oh-lol-linux moment the other day when I reached for ffmpeg to convert a bunch of .flac to .m4a.

I'm still waiting on Linux to "find" pf and import it. =]

3:30 AM
@ChrisS Actually it looks quite similar internally, though userland looks utterly different from anything I've seen before.

I suppose RMS would have a heart attack if any more BSD code ended up in the Linux kernel.

nft insert rule filter input tcp dport 80 counter accept

I keep telling myself one of these days I'm going to convert to pf, but I'm still on ipfw

Don't get me wrong, I like FreeBSD, and when bhyve matures a little more I may even switch.

I'm rather annoyed with bhyve myself. Wish they would have stuck with importing KVM.

3:36 AM
They brought in all the virtio stuff.
Or rather, reimplemented it all.

I know. All the Xen and Hyper-V client stuff is there too.

Right now I'm just enjoying my hot new ZFS zpools.

If I could get 10.0 to boot off zfs I'd be happier...
Got my RPi boxes working almost perfectly today, so that's a win.
get these association bills taken care of and and all that's left is putting leins of 6 peoples' houses. =]
eh... need to file a police report again... why can't people just shovel their sidewalks?

@ChrisS Why do you need to file a police report?

People not shoveling the snow off their sidewalks. File a report, police come and check, issue warning, return a few days later and issue a ticket if still not shoveled, return a few days later if still not shoveled put an order in to have it shoveled at the owners expense.
I don't especially care, but other people in the neighborhood do, so they complain to me, and I turn the complaints over to the police and the wheel goes round.

3:46 AM
@ChrisS Wow, remind me not to move somewhere that is snows
I can hardly be fucked mowing my lawn, let alone shovelling snow
(My lawn grows crazy fast and needs mowing every week during summer)

In the summer I get to file complains for people who haven't mowed.
This is what you get when in live in the city.

@ChrisS Wait, not mowing the LAWN is against the law?!

I think last year I called for unshoveled sidewalks once, maybe twice. This year I've filed 3 reports so far, each with multiple houses/offenders.

Sidewalk I can sort of understand; it obstructs pedestrian traffic and can be dangerous
... but lawn?

America, land of the free?

3:50 AM
@MarkHenderson Yep - has to be ~.25m or less

@ChrisS Doesn't the sidewalk belong to the local council? Shouldn't it be their responsibility to clean it anyway?

Here, in the city, The City is responsible for plowing the roads and sidewalks.

It's a deed restricted area?

@jscott Thats sort of what i would have expected

@MarkHenderson Sidewalk belongs to the property owner - their responsibility unless they farm it out to someone else.

3:51 AM
@ChrisS In that case I woudl just rip the sidewalk up and plant grass over it. BAM! No sidewalk to shovel.

There's an easement, you can't do that

@MichaelHampton Well you're basically fucked then aren't you

@MarkHenderson Still, we've people walking in the streets during snow storms when the city hasn't fully cleared the sidewalks.

Like I mentioned, most years it's not an issue. This year we officially have 22" (0.5m+) of standing snow. And if you aren't clearing your sidewalk kids can't use it to get to the bus-stop, and their moms' hate having their kids walk in the road...

Here the city is supposed to clear the sidewalks, but sometimes they don't...

3:53 AM
Strange how things differ. Here the sidewalk (and the grass between the sidewalk and the road) belongs to the council. You are expected to maintain the lawn part that's actually public property, but you're not required to and they will come and mow it eventually if you never do it

@MarkHenderson One side of the road is required to have a sidewalk. If you took it out the city would put it back and pass the cost along.

@ChrisS Sounds like they want to have their cake and eat it too

That's every government I've ever heard of.

In that case, I would make my sidewalk fucking fantasic. I'd get that fucker made out of non-slip hardened glass with heating elements so that I can melt the snow right off it, and people can feel like a bit posh as they walk past my house

@MarkHenderson people voted for the ordinance... don't blame the city

3:55 AM
(I also have like 30 meters of frontage, so that would be expensive)

@MarkHenderson That's completely legal and some fancy neighborhoods have fancy sidewalks.

@ChrisS That's more like it then :P
I power-washed my driveway the other day and the sidewalk looked a bit out of place, so I power-washed the sidewalk too. Now my sidewalk is super bright and clean concrete and the rest of the street is a dirty black colour

lol

That's one way to remove snow...and leave behind a nice sheet of ice?

Same deal with the lawn edging - I put a lot of attention into making sure my house had nice clean straight edges, and everyone elses grass just spews onto the concrete
Pity my house looks like the BFG took a dump on it

4:03 AM
That's the law of inverse neighbors. However much effort you put into your landscaping, your neighbors will put an invest amount into theirs.

@MichaelHampton @MarkHenderson lives in a strange place where it's not colder than a witch's coochie right now, and every plant or animal you encounter is venomous, poisonous, or otherwise deadly.

I don't know how poor people can possibly afford to have kids... These hospital bills just keep coming.
I'm starting to wonder if they send the first and see if you pay before trying to get you on the hook for more... like a 419 scam.

@ChrisS Move to a country where childbirth is free

4:20 AM
@ChrisS Been there, done that, hung out in Terrifying Nightmare Monsters :-)
@MarkHenderson "Childbirth is free" - that's like the "Sign and Drive" of the parenting world

@MarkHenderson I'm trying to work on that here, but having a difference of opinion with a lot of the country.... including our former hedgehog

"Here's the kid. And here's you invoice for everything after the birth. You can make convenient monthly payments for the rest of your life..."

@ChrisS Well I hope you make it

Ain't happening anytime soon either...

@ChrisS Hospitals charge less when you don't have insurance.

4:31 AM
Yeah, I know some of the games they play... Annoying

@freiheit yes, just enough to bankrupt you - not so much that you'll have no hope of ever paying it off

Speaking of nftables and virtio, virtio is what the author of ipchains / iptables is working on these days

Meh, so far it's been ~$250. Got a new bill, not sure how much I owe yet but will be <$200.

@ChrisS So you may not have even hit your deductible?

What's a deductible?

4:42 AM
@ChrisS Amount you pay for directly out of covered things... Often preventative stuff you still just have the co-pay, but anything else you have to pay the deductible before the insurance actually covers anything.
In an insurance policy, the deductible is the amount of expenses that must be paid out of pocket before an insurer will pay any expenses. In general usage, the term deductible may be used to describe one of several types of clauses (see below) that are used by insurance companies as a threshold for policy payments. Deductibles are typically used to deter the large number of trivial claims that a consumer can be reasonably expected to bear the cost of. By restricting its coverage to events that are significant enough to incur large costs, the insurance firm expects to pay out slightly sm...

@freiheit I know... I'm kidding

@ChrisS Approximately one dollar less than your net worth.

I don't have a deductible though. I've got 80% coverage, but the first $3k per patient, family max $6k, of that 20% that I would owe is covered for me like an anti-deductible.

@ChrisS An anti-deductible? Wow!

This is getting entirely too complicated.

4:48 AM
Not sure how else I'd describe it...
@MichaelHampton Agreed, but nobody asked us. =[

5:03 AM
Fucking developers.

The proxy question?

Wait.. what? What the hell does UDP have to do with it?
He's trying to use a web server to proxy UDP traffic? ....

6:02 AM

Lawsuits against God have occurred in real life and in fiction. Issues debated in the actions include the problem of evil and harmful "acts of God". Actual suits Ernie Chambers In the U.S. state of Nebraska, State Senator Ernie Chambers filed a suit in 2008 against God, seeking a permanent injunction against God's harmful activities, as an effort to publicize the issue of public access to the court system. The suit was dismissed because God could not be properly notified, not having an address. The Judge stated, "Given that this court finds that there can never be service effectuated ...

RyanSI hear the term 'act of god' frequently when the service desk at my company is discussing issues caused by weather etc. I was pretty surprised by this and left wondering if this is commonplace? This question is also often asked in the form of: “How Many Consecutive Mounts and/or Days do I Have Between Mandatory Checks?” Typically ext filesystems and their supporting tools are set to force a fsck to take place on a volume after either a certain number of mounts have taken place and after a certain number of days have passed (whichever causes an fsck to happen first). Ubuntu has a certain really annoying property. Alright it has several, but the one that I'm talking about right now is the insistence that it start services upon installation. While I'm never a fan, there are certain times when it chafes more than normal. Here's the deal. I'm using the PuppetLabs RabbitMQ module, and I'm […]

get-allthethings should be valid powershell. I'm not sure what it should do, possibly load all the modules you have, but that's not the point.

I've been meaning to learn how to make a CmdLet in c#

http:\\www.dherman.co.uk\Get-AllTheThings.dll

@FalconMomot I'm lazy right now - give me teh code

@pauska hmm
there was some DLL registration you do
on schmmgmt.dll
then you get an MMC for it
be in the schema admins AD group
and then add an attribute... make sure you get an OID
give it a syntax and the matching syntax OID, and associate it with the user class or whatever
you can use an existing one you like as a template
then, done :D
@pauska look, a dragon!

@pauska yup. do that.
oh
don't ever use the numericString type
it crashes things

unicode strings is enough for us.. we just process the fields in powershell/asp/whatever

11:43 AM
mm
if you are doing it for any serious purpose you should obtain a private enterprise OID
in the 1.3.6.1.4.1 space
(it's free)
otherwise use the random one microsoft tells you to generate

I think this person is confused...
