12:10 AM
Amazon still doesn't appear to have their shit together after the holidays. Took them until late last night to ship out an order I'd made early Wednesday.
@freiheit Hello my bearded bicyclist friend!

@Magellan Greetings
stripey fuzzy kitten?

mini Maine Coon. All the energy of a 25lb cat in a 7lb frame. Hell on wheels.
not making friends with my co-workers right now either. Someone turned off a bunch of our noisier monitoring checks right before the weekend. I'm turning them back on now that they've all left for the weekend.

@Andrew more that it didn't even try to answer the question of what's the difference between PRNG and RNG. But yeah, the example was pretty atrocious too.

12:47 AM
sup folks
Did I miss anything good today? Has @ewwhite thrown away all of his clients' firewalls?

@MDMarra it's been rather quiet today. I assumed that you guys had all been snowed in and the power's out almost everywhere east of the Rockies.

Thankfully, I never lost power - just TV and Internet on and off, but today was fine

I posted a link to my cat food review, since most of the avatars in here are cats, to no reply. that's about it

@MDMarra It's been horrible here. The sun came out and temperature got down to 26. Thought I was going to be blinded while walking out to my car and freeze to death.

I also posted a review of a 32 port USB power supply to counteract some of the idiotic reviews for similar products
I'll have a couple of those soon, so I can write a real review. If you read the ones on there... total shit

12:54 AM
ha

does it need a 220VDC hookup and transformer to run all the iPreciouses?

the 32 port one runs off a standard 110 wall plug
it's 500ma/port, so 16 amps at 5v

@MDMarra WHAT?!?
I worked my ass off today
8.5 hours of billable time!

woah
you're like...a real adult

@RyJones my Droid4 drains rather aggressively at 500mA if the screen is on.

1:00 AM
@MDMarra on top of a full workday at my client's site yesterday.
it's ridiculous...

TWO IN A ROW?

@Magellan I'd have to see what the max is, but these yuns only pull about 500ma

Take a vacation, @ewwhite

@MDMarra today wasn't at the client... it was comprised of tasks for 9 different customers...

Where are all of my billable hours?

1:02 AM
@MDMarra I have some for you.
but I'm trying to increase my rates and pull a bunch of projects together.

@RyJones Simple. Makes me wonder why I didn't think of it.
I like it

@MDMarra just missed a lot of crappy questions, and that "EvanAnderson" bot answering anything halfway decent.

amazing how long it can take to remove 1.5T of files even with SSDs.

@Magellan I was happy to discover how much faster find is at removing files than rm

kce
1:16 AM
@ewwhite - Wait whaaatt? How many hours a week do you normally work?

@RyJones depends on how you're invoking rm

I don't think a ZFS root filesystem is very good for my desktop. It feels much slower...

@Magellan I did a naive rm -rf on a directory and it basically hung with no disk activity for hours.
OK that is bullshit easteregg

@RyJones ah. yes, the recursive stuff in rm could use some work.
especially if the directories have LOTS of files in them.

Using a Synology as a time machine backup target was a bad idea.
I wanted to remove a directory from all backups, Mac OS said fine, but no disk space was reclaimed.
even days later.

1:20 AM
@ewwhite Why did you talk me into ZFS again?

@RyJones Did you forget to sprinkle the Steve Jobs-blessed chicken blood over the hardware?

@Magellan it just doesn't handle directories with millions of files very well

@RyJones You just described every single *nix filesystem I've ever worked with.

ntfs, too

why did a cold draft just pass through the room?

1:27 AM
What filesystems do handle millions of files well? It would be nice to have all my porn on one computer for, finally. Save me a pile of money on renting the datacenter that houses it all now.

1:42 AM
@kce Oh, I work maybe 20 hours a week.
@MichaelHampton Oh, you're using ZFS for desktop? It needs tuning.
@HopelessN00b XFS handles it well...
normally 20 hours/week

kce
@ewwhite - By Great Odin's Beard!!! How can I get on that?
I'd much rather work 20 hrs than 40 hrs.

@kce yeah :)

kce
So that's why you're in consulting...

@ewwhite Hell yeah it needs tuning. My VMs are fast and my desktop is slooooooow

@MichaelHampton ZFS is a filesystem for data partitions... it's not a speed-demon out of the box.
what did you do?

1:55 AM
@ewwhite I cut zfs_arc_max to 2GB because it was growing out of control. Aside from that I haven't tuned it at all.

@MichaelHampton how much RAM is in the system?

@ewwhite 16GB

zfs get all
and zpool status -v
and what OS is this?
am I going to have to fix some ZFS tonight?

@ewwhite Lunix

ZFS lz4 compression on! Always
atime = off
Schedulers should be noop or deadline
block sizes should be on the larger side.
I'd give a little more ARC

how many disks? You may want to play with...
options zfs zfs_arc_max=4000000000
options zfs zfs_vdev_max_pending=16

saurok is on my 240GB SSD. srvmirrors is part of my old 1TB and is just Linux distro mirrors. I don't care about it. libvirt is two 3TB red drives mirrored.
# cat /sys/module/zfs/parameters/zfs_vdev_max_pending
10

For SSD and 4k sector drives... you'll want ashift=12
on the pool
else everything will be rough

Oh great
It somehow got created with ashift=9

they really should just make it default
so you're running into misalignment.
zpool create -o ashift=12 -f vol1 wwn-0x600508b1001ce908732af63b45a75a6b
I do ashift=13 on Fusion-io

2:08 AM
Crap, it's also the root, that means I get to boot off a USB stick and do some zfs send/receive magic, right?

This is what I do instead of learning how to script/program, load balancers and databases...
ZFS root?!?
oh my... that's scary :)

@ewwhite yes, saurok is the root
I could go back to ext4, but that wouldn't be any fun!

ZFS root is not recommended on Linux.

By whom? Is it dangerous? Am I going to lose all my ... configuration files?

no, just that it's not done.
nice thing is that losing data never comes into my mind... ZFS doesn't lose shit, it seems

2:11 AM
> 1.13 Can I boot from ZFS?
> Yes, numerous people have had success with this. However, because it still requires the latest versions of grub and is distribution specific we don't recommend it. Instead we suggest using ZFS as your root file system. There are excellent walk through available for both Ubuntu and Gentoo.
The zfsonlinux people don't seem to have a problem with it.
(Oh, and I'm not booting from ZFS; /boot is still an old 500MB ext4 partition.)

K. Well, I only use ZFS for data partitions...
[root@xt ~]# df -h

wow, ZFS root... that's wild :)
but yeah, you can't do the ashift thing without some reorganization

I've got plenty of space to reorganize things, so that's not a big worry

@MichaelHampton K. Well, get to it!
Or else @MDMarra will get you to try Windows Storage Spaces.

2:15 AM
I have a more pressing issue, though... whenever I start the machine, the zpool mirror comes up degraded

@MichaelHampton dmesg | grep hostid

  pool: libvirt

        invalid. Sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue
        functioning in a degraded state.

Hmmm.

You may want your /etc/hostid to match...
hostid > /etc/hostid

Fuck, I thought I'd already gotten them to match

It's derived from your hosts file.
zpool clear libvirt

@ewwhite Yeah, I did that and it promptly came back online and resilvered

Time for an in-chat Shopping Question. Anyone recommend a free or at least ridiculously-cheap Website monitoring service that can do REST GET notifications?

Seems like something you should be able to achieve with a bot posting a job to Mechanical Turk every 5 minutes (or whatever polling interval you like).

2:29 AM
@MichaelHampton your computer is broken

@ewwhite Yeah, I'm getting that feeling.
Oh, there's some freaky endianness thing going on

Not only has the output of hostid been identical for ~200 cycles, it also writes to stdout.
Are you doing this in LXC?

Nope...
So I googled around and discovered that /etc/hostid is supposed to be binary data, not text
and found a shellscript to fix it

@MichaelHampton weird... what distro?

@ewwhite Arch

2:35 AM
@HopelessN00b Wow. Very racism. Much horrible?

@MichaelHampton RHEL doesn't even have it... I just put it there for pool consistency

@ewwhite I'd never heard of it before ZFS... but you apparently need it for ZFS root to work properly
And I'm not even having a problem with ZFS root mounting! It's just slow...

@HopelessN00b yeah, that's still a tough one to swallow.

But spammers and crackers and such do a decent job getting content or cracking CAPTCHAs, etc, by posting HITS to get thousands of 3rd world respondents working for $0.01 (or less) per task.

2:39 AM
@MichaelHampton slow because of the 4k sector issue
no amount of tuning will fix that.
ashift=12 or bust!

@ewwhite Yeah, I'll fix that next time I have reason to reboot

well, it's a reformat...
not a quick fix

@ewwhite I'll just zfs send it somewhere, recreate the pool and zfs receive it back

then you'll be asking Sandra-like questions...

I'm not reinstalling Arch. If this doesn't work out, it's Gentoo time!

2:43 AM
Oh no...

rsync is quite okay :) ZFS send/receive are janky.

:)
What's wrong with zfs send/receive?

you need mbuffer and pv to make any use of it.

I could just use tar like I've been doing since time immemorial

@ewwhite live like what? :)

2:54 AM
@voretaq7 like shit - remodelista.com/posts/…

@ewwhite My place is only 500 sq. ft.
but it's also only me, the fish, and the lizard

@voretaq7 no children?

@ewwhite I hate children

500 sqft, really?

yup
why do I need more than that? I have a kitchen, a bathroom, and areas to sleep, work, and watch TV

2:57 AM
@voretaq7 and a pot to piss in!

I just pee off the porch

@ewwhite I pay (just under) $1000/month, half of that is my mortgage and half is the co-op maintenance.

@ewwhite dude. I used to live in 360 sq.ft.

@RyJones Aim for the pedestrians
@Magellan I don't think I could do less than 500

@Magellan but not a family....

2:59 AM
@voretaq7 she got all the furniture in the divorce, so it's not like I had to fit a lot of stuff in there.

@ewwhite I'm not a huge fan of living with other people anyway :P
@Magellan I really, REALLY need to buy a new bed. I keep saying that but I never get my ass to Ikea to actually do it.

@voretaq7 doing that made a huge difference in my life
seriously, a bed is something I will never cheap on again

oh this bed isn't bad
I just want one with storage drawers
and a proper platform bed so I can get rid of the two shitty box springs I have

@voretaq7 I ordered mine from amazon, I'm reasonably happy with it

@RyJones got a link?

3:03 AM
agreed, Toilet Paper and Beds are two places that being cheap aren't going to work out for you in the long term.

@RyJones Please, go on. What makes a good bed? Is it just the mattress and/or box? Does the frame mean anything? I've tried laying on the gross floor models at the mattress store but that doesn't help with how it will work for >5 hours.

Cheap toilet paper doesn't even work out in the short term.

3:04 AM
@RyJones that's pretty nice, I really want the storage space though :)

@voretaq7 understood, just showing what I picked up.
@jscott for me? being way up off the ground with the ability to walk up to the bed without hitting it is super nice.
I can rotate, my legs are on the ground, and I can just stand up.

I wonder if they do that one in a Full

this wasn't so important when I was younger with flexible knees :)

ignoring the Ikea sheets :P

3:07 AM
@voretaq7 You don't like nonpareils?

It would be nice if it was just a bit narrower and an actual platform bed like the one you showed (maybe with the drawers being in the front instead of on the sides)

also, I found the box is nice but not required. I prefer a firmer bed.

@jscott I don't like Ikea textiles. Cotton/Polyester blends.

then I bought a nice pillow top queen mattress from a place that delivered and had a 30 day warrantee or something.

@RyJones I'm "Not A Fan" of box springs. I prefer wood slats like they use in pretty much all of europe (or a solid base like the one you linked to)

3:08 AM
@RyJones Noted. I'd not thought about that part.

@voretaq7 I don't use one.

I have to because of the way this bed is structured (the mattress would be down inside the frame without them). When I replace the bed I'm chucking the box springs.

so, all that said - I broke my frame and need to replace it. I was rotating the mattress, stepped on the platform, and put my leg through it.

@RyJones oh dear.... -1 for durability

note: I'm super fucking fat, so duh, it broke

3:09 AM
Check out the Ikea bed :-)
it's solid birch with wood slats, should tolerate being stood on.
no foot-room under the bed though which might be a deal-breaker for you?

I did look at it. We have a huge Ikea in Renton. I went with amazon because they delivered to the door. this was a mistake
@voretaq7 I like having the mattress extend over the edge. Imagine sitting with knees on the edge, swinging legs down. I don't like my heels hitting the bed.
it isn't a deal breaker, though, I just don't like it as well as I might
those boxes fucking suck to wrestle in the front door.

thats actually nice
not a fan of particleboard though - just a personal thing after having so many particleboard things fall apart on me

well, me either, I broke my big toe punching through it :)
MDF is ass
if I had a table saw, I'd build the frame I want and be done with it

"Oh I mopped the floor and a little water got on the bed. Look it's growing like those fucking dinosaur sponge things we had as kids!!"
I'd build the Ikea thing if I were motivated

I like Ikea stuff. I don't know why it gets so much hate

3:15 AM
but $400 for them to do it vs. me actually doing work? SEND IN THE SWEDES.
I despise my Ikea couch
(and apparently everyone else did too 'cuz it's gone from the site now)
thing with Ikea is if you buy their cheap shit it's... well shit.
if you buy products made of "Solid [insert wood here]" that cost a few hundred bucks they're actually good products

I picked up one of the spring mattresses for the kids and they like it

@RyJones I am seriously considering one of their latex mattresses

I might have bought the Hurva or the Hanestad: ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/bedroom/24828

My mattress is about 6 years old now and getting on to the point where I'm thinking I'd rather replace it. It was never really super comfortable (it was nice, but after like a year the pillow-top started wearing in and you can't flip them)

@voretaq7 that's what I dislike about my pillow top. It's nice for the first little while, but rotating it only goes so far

3:19 AM
@RyJones yeah, about 18 inches.

heh

that's part of what I like about the Ikea mattresses - they're finished on both sides so you can flip and rotate

25 year warranty, too

yeah

o0
@voretaq7: I thought all matresses should be rotatable so you can wear level them

3:24 AM
for $400 I can't go wrong with a 25 year materials warranty
@JourneymanGeek Rotate yes, flip no.
my mattress is unfinished on the bottom, it's just a flat surface for the springs to attach to & some covering fabric, you couldn't sleep on it if I flipped it over

well, you could, but it would be miserable sleeping

@voretaq7: we flip ours. Its the same material on all the sides

We did that Orthopedic Memory Foam mattress, it is really nice, but after 4 years of us sleeping on it, it doesn't return 100% to it's original shape. It doesn't sag like a regular mattress, but it's not perfect either.

@JourneymanGeek as God and Nature intended!

I would say I wish I made enough money to just throw away my mattress every year, but I'd get used to it and wish I could throw it away every month

3:26 AM
@MikeAWood yeah that's what I'm wondering about doing a latex-core mattress
supposedly they last longer than the memory foam ones and don't sag/wear-in as much as springs do

I am ready to get a SleepNumber bed, I slept on one during my Sleep Study. And it was wonderful. Reviews seem mixed about their longevity and issues.

@MikeAWood my sleep study was on a run-of-the-mill bed. nothing cool.
that and a dose of Ambien made for a nice night, though

The local hospital spend a ton on the sleep center.. Flat screens and DirecTV... Was nice. Finding out you have Sleep Apnea, not so much. But the bed was really amazing.

@MikeAWood Buy an aerobed and inflate it to taste - same deal :P
I've thought about doing that too - picking up two queen-sized AeroBeds (one to keep in the closet as a spare for when the one I'm using breaks) & not have to worry about springs and shit

@voretaq7..... that's the equivalent of say a canoe and a cruise ship. They are both boats right? Aerobed feels like an air mattress and doesn't have that same support in the center of your back. A bit like sleeping in a hammock. Sleep Number felt like a mattress where you could adjust how hard it was..
aerobed for me was not a pleasant experience. it was better than sleeping on the couch, but those days for me are long gone..
@RyJones, I had to go back a second time because the tech forgot to put me on therapy half way through the night. That kinda sucked... But they didn't drug me at all and I tend to be a night owl. That going to bed at 1030pm stuff was rough.

3:37 AM
@MikeAWood eh I've not been impressed with the sleep number beds personally. I found them about as good as an aerobed when I was mattress shopping
of course that was also the display model in the store so it was probably beat to shit

I wish I'd shaved my body, I was picking that glue they used for the probes out of my hair for a week

@voretaq7, I spent two nights on them and it was better than our memory foam matress at home. My only night on an aerobed was miserable probably because I was used to a Cal King and we aren't used to sharing such a small bed. So every time the other moved, we both went for a ride. IN the case of the Sleep Number, the sides aren't pneumatically connected, so if you move, they don't get bounced around.
@RyJones yeah, WTF dude, first you scrub the crap out of 40 points on my head then you send me home with my hair full of super sticky goop that requires Lava soap to remove...

ahh lava soap
so many fond memories of those from the army. (not)

@MikeAWood yeah the aerobed is one chamber so it's not great for sharing
(well, not for sharing while sleeping anyway)

@voretaq7 I found my knees poked through when thrusting

3:41 AM
@RyJones You underinflated the bed, or you have really bony knees :-D

@voretaq7 yeah, if we did it, I would do dual long twins to mimic the footprint of a cal king.

@voretaq7 Or I'm fat
anyway

Speaking of fat - I'm hungry, but I shouldn't eat anything more today.

I had dinner at 5pm....somehow the day got away from me..

@RyJones he's said that he's going to try to make it happen.

Q: High Memory 64bit server, not using all ram

KevI have several high memory linux servers running centos 64bit, and after 10-20 days of uptime I have noticed on all of these servers they dont actually use all the ram available to then (they all have around 10gb free on a 48gb system ,and 20gb free on 64gb systems. They are web servers, and ha...

Redhat paywall: access.redhat.com/site/solutions/60669 - What is the default value of vm.zone_reclaim_mode in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 ?
Answer: It's determined by NUMA distances...
1585     while ((node = find_next_best_node(local_node, &used_mask)) >= 0) {
1586         int distance = node_distance(local_node, node);

1588         /*
1589 * If another node is sufficiently far away then it is better
1590 * to reclaim pages in a zone before going off node.

1592         if (distance > RECLAIM_DISTANCE)
1593             zone_reclaim_mode = 1;

@ewwhite Yeah, looks like he sort of figured that out on his own

FFS, I'm not asking for the moon and stars. I just want a hosting service that can issue a HTTP GET for outages.....
They'll do twitter, sms, email, iOS pushes, and every other damn thing. but no http get. grrrr.

GET is supposed to be idempotent. I'd be suspicious of anyone who offered that. Now, POST would be fine...

@MichaelHampton It seems like it's something we shouldn't have to touch... auto-detected.
More like, he's probably running some off version of EL6
"My CentOS 6.1 server is acting weird..."

@MichaelHampton i just want a simple message dropped into hipchat.
looks like i have to pay for pingdom to tie into pager duty to talk to hipchat.
or just run nagios on my home network.

7:56 AM
and there goes my iPhone case... broken
wait, that's backwards :)

@ewwhite your wooden case ?

yep
It lasted 4 separate drops.
I mean, I could superglue...
but yeah, the novelty has worn off.
lasted 2 months.
This company appears to have a kevlar-reinforced case. evutec.com/apple.html
yeah, hubris.

8:11 AM
Bummer

my fault.

8:32 AM
hey, what is the best way to murder someone who is playing the "you think all my ideas are bad and that's unacceptable because I'm older than you and I think I'm better" game?

Death by dentures

or more accurately, the "distributive justice theory says I should be better than you, but I'm not, so I'm going to interfere with you" game?
people who try to play rank suck.
everyone apparently needs a peon.
but really, it doesn't need to be me.

9:55 AM
So, $work has created a separate support team just to cover issues in sochi...

10:10 AM
Unfortunate.

10:27 AM
sochi splits me in half.. politics shouldn't ever interfere with sports, but this time it's hard to ignore it
my girlfriend was born in Russia, so I know that not everything in the western media is fact based.. still, they have a long way to go when it comes to freedom of speech and sex equality
