@MDMarra that's why he's a Hopeless n00b not just a Regular one
@HopelessN00b well all the MICR printers I know are laser
but if you're actually printing the MICR line then yes, you need a special printer
MICR toner is like twice as expensive as the powdered unicorn they use for regular toner - you don't want anyone printing with it

@HopelessN00b Just think of a printer as an encoder that encodes PS/PCL to a 2-dimensional bitmap.

@MDMarra No, that's not what I'm supporting at all. Working for this company isn't universal and obligatory, like government is. Don't like the rules here, work somewhere else.

@MikeyB Spec it that way when you sell it to the government - you can charge more
the words "encoding" and "bitmap" are worth an extra 5 grand each, easy

(And FWIW, I've worked places that mandated direct deposit, and simplified things a hell of a lot for HR, Accounting and IT. Think it's a good policy from a corporate standpoint.)

If you mandate direct deposit, you almost have to provide something sketchy like one of those direct deposit only debit cards that only let you make like three withdrawls a week

5:05 PM
@MDMarra Actually, the one company that made the change while I was working there set aside time every week for a couple months, and had about half a dozen banks and credit unions come in to pitch their services and assist in setting up new accounts for anyone who wanted them. It was actually about the only thing at that place that was well-thought out. I was impressed.

I have plenty of check printers... of of these produce places use them
magnetic ink

Yeah, we have those here too

@HopelessN00b No bank account? Just bury your money in a mason jar in the backyard...
(I watch too much MTV)

Apparently

@ewwhite Which reminds me, I've been meaning to borrow a metal detector and visit the properties of some people I know at night.

5:10 PM
@ewwhite better interest rate...
@HopelessN00b that usually works out well for the employer too - they open a business account and get $50 for every employee they sign up

@voretaq7 Yup, win-win-win. The banks, the employer, the employees all made out better for the deal. It's great when you can pull together something like that.
Anyway, lunch time. I need to get away from this place and DOS printing and faxes for a little while.

I just laughed so hard at that
That's the actual william shatner commenting, btw

That's awesome @MDMarra - was that today? Where's that from?

@MDMarra iLOL'd. See, this is why I keep you mechanical turks around - you filter all the shit content and deliver me the pure freebased comedy

@TheCleaner It was on the front page of r/BestOf on reddit

@TomO'Connor So move. I hear Russia is large

My old boss is subtly discrediting me on twitter
He gives me bad references
now he's at it again.

@TomO'Connor Oops! You forgot to cut out his tongue before you left your last job.

@MichaelHampton or his aorta.

5:34 PM
@TomO'Connor Now you're talking!

@TomO'Connor Old boss at Basebad?

@WesleyDavid Yeah.

@TomO'Connor Why do you use him as a reference?

I accidentally posted a config file with an old password in it, and he's telling all of twitter.
I've since gone in and retconned it
but still.

@TomO'Connor Well heck - what's his twatter account? And is he actually naming you?

5:38 PM
@MDMarra I didn't have much of a choice last time around.

Like DONT HIRE @TOMO'CONNOR BECAUSE HE IS A HAXOR!!

@WesleyDavid No, not quite like that.

@TomO'Connor Oh, I didn't know you were a HAXOR. That's the problem!

I should sue him.
If i had the money.

@TomO'Connor As I understand it the UK has some quite excellent libel laws
@TomO'Connor don't you have attorneys that work on contingency when they're damn sure they can win?

5:40 PM
I don't know any.

or is your legal system civilized

I'd also need someone to request a reference on a tapped phoneline.

So, what's the story behind that tweet?

Anyone want to help me parse html in regex?

Zalgo can

5:41 PM
1) Why is he googling for a root password. And 2) Did you actually post it on SF?

@TomO'Connor also where's the question you retconned so I can make sure the password is properly expunged from the edit history if you haven't already?

Can't be worse than what I'm doing.

@MDMarra He googled for an old password, and it turned up hidden in a question i asked.

@Basil It's gonna cost you...

@MDMarra I google my root passwords occasionally

Q: Bacula & Multiple Tape Devices, and so on

Tom O'ConnorBacula won't make use of 2 tape devices simultaneously. (Search for #-#-# for the TL;DR) A little background, perhaps. In the process of trying to get a decent working backup solution (backing up >20TB ain't cheap, or easy) at $dayjob, we bought a bunch of things to make it work. Firstly, ther...

Oh I see

it's hidden somewhere in a config snippet.
I thought I'd got them all
anyway.

@voretaq7 If I were google, I'd totally publish a list of search terms that were only searched once and didn't find any matches.

it's like he's suggesting he's never made a mistake

Actually, I'd sell it to the chinese.
It's a damned good thing I'm not google.

like say, dropping 18k on VMware, and then only using proxmox
He's just a passive-aggressive wanker.

@TomO'Connor wut?

@ewwhite Oh, he bought VMware 5.1 and then decided that it would be easier to just keep using proxmox instead.

@TomO'Connor pfft, that's just a DB password anyway - you'd have to be inside the environment to do any harm with it

got bored with the setup process, and was too cheap to do any training for the team

passed it on to have the rev with the password erased from history though

5:44 PM
@voretaq7 Fair enough

@TomO'Connor aaaaand it's erased from history :-)

@voretaq7 I STILL SAW IT. It's **********
Woah guys, chat automatically stars all passwords now!

@MDMarra HOW DID YOU GET MY ROOT PASSWORD?!
@TomO'Connor what link? :)

@voretaq7 I don't know!

@MDMarra It does?! Let me test that: ocyi;=h2SNE4Yll:

Did that work right?

but yeah if passwords show up in posts edit them and then let us know - we bribe the SE folks and they do something involving database entrails :)

@freiheit It does?! Let me test that: ************

@Basil My mother is a saint

@freiheit yeah - don't worry it always shows you your passwords :)
@MDMarra @Basil longs for the days when your gravatar was a crotch shot

@voretaq7 Oh good, I was worried that now everybody had my root password. ;)

@voretaq7 The good old days

@freiheit My root password is *
or at least that's the hash.

5:49 PM
They don't give me root at work. I wonder why?

"If you REALLY need to get in as root and you can't get there with sudo you're on the damn console anyway - you may as well go single-user"

They trust me with something much worse- san administrator :P

(yes I consider the console secure)

@voretaq7 letmein

@WesleyDavid I think l3tme1n is the default Sun Admin's Root Password
I've seen it on entirely too many Sun systems

5:52 PM
I'm generally of the opinion that you don't need a root password
and interestingly enough, the one in question, wasn't.

@TomO'Connor yeah - I mean in principle we zot any password, but that one was benign
even if you got in you couldn't DO anything -- what are you gonna do, delete the Bacula catalog?
Ooooh, I'm heartbroken, I have to run bscantape!

@voretaq7 I wanna zot him.

could some of you nice folks cast close votes on this? I don't want to mod-hammer it...

Ram SWe were skipped few modules such as outbound emails and Community builder etc. during the first installation of Tridion 2011 SP1 and now we want to run the installer in repair mode to add these modules. @TomO'Connor I know, that makes me laugh - "Root password was posted!" Are you stupid?
Or is that same password used elsewhere

No. elsewhere they use secret123

Q: Quick way to restore or reload /etc/fstab settings?

ewwhiteI'm working with a complex /etc/fstab on a RHEL 6.x-based server. The system has a variety of mount options in use across eight partitions, including several bind mounts. I'm testing options and their effect on the image I'm working on. e.g. options like nodev,nosuid,noexec,nobarrier and several...

Don't look at me.

A quick way? Re-shoe.... ;-)
* ducks * and runs to the hills

@MichaelHampton come on... there has to be some nice non-reboot way of getting shit back in order.

@ewwhite mount -o remount,added_options_here -- doesn't work for deleted options unless there's a negation option (suid vs nosuid etc).

@ewwhite mount <mountpoint> -o remount?

6:20 PM
but that's not as simple as mount -o remount -a :)

@DennisKaarsemaker Per-partition?

@ewwhite yup

@ewwhite I tested with 'acl', mount / -o remount,acl ; mount / -o remount reverts

mount -o remount,work_dammit_xfs_crap /mysql
sadly that doesn't fix xfs performance on co6+hp g8

hehe

6:22 PM
@fuero no luck here.. in this case I have...
[root@cgi-ma-ist-oam1v ~]# mount
/dev/mapper/vg00-root on / type ext4 (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,rootcontext="system_u:object_r:tmpfs_t:s0")
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext4 (rw)
/dev/mapper/vg00-home on /home type ext4 (rw,nodev,nobarrier)
/dev/mapper/vg00-tmp on /tmp type ext4 (rw,noexec)
/dev/mapper/vg00-usr on /usr type ext4 (rw,nobarrier)
/dev/mapper/vg00-var on /var type ext4 (rw,nobarrier)
but /tmp needs nodev,nosuid,noexec

hmm, this is weird
/dev/mapper/vg00-tmp on /tmp type ext4 (rw,noexec)
/tmp on /var/tmp type none (rw,bind)
ah no, dumbass me is reading it wrong

yeah, I have bind mounts, too

mount -o remount,nodev,nosuid,noexec /tmp should do the trick

all of this... why? because I have this security image running... and the client wants to be able to install some janky software that needs execute permissions.
IN /tmp!!
@DennisKaarsemaker yes, that works... but how to apply/ensure all of the fstab's settings are in place.

@ewwhite Manual check

6:26 PM
@ewwhite Not the same client that wants their server paranoid-secured?

and I don't care what anyone says, this is still easier than OU's and Active Directory naming... @MDMarra
@MichaelHampton yep

@ewwhite And of course fixing the shit software isn't an option?

@ewwhite 3rd party software I presume? :D

@ewwhite It's money...

@MichaelHampton not to me.

@ewwhite puppet/mcollective/chef/func to the resuce!
@WesleyDavid hah. Fax is booming business
We send about half a million of'em per day

@ewwhite And they know they can't have their paranoia if they install the software, right?

@DennisKaarsemaker I'd love to... but this is a private cloud... not my infra to maintain.

6:30 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker It's sad that to make things smoother I really do need to figure out the best way to receive and send faxes.
Imagine if the latest in personal computing still needed an IBM selectric typewriter for input.

@WesleyDavid hylafax with either a few analog modems or a diva card with an E1 (the second option is rather expensive though)

@MichaelHampton um...
I have about 50 VSIfax installations.

We use hylafax on the equivalent of 6500 phonelines. We can ddos a small country with it :)

Dammit, EA's playing ServerFault now. So much for answering any Windows questions today.

@TomO'Connor @Iain yeah GraceNote put it through the chipper-shredder

6:35 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker hot

@ewwhite it definitely gets telco sales reps panties wet
expensive shit

@DennisKaarsemaker What the hell do you guys do to generate all those faxes?

@DennisKaarsemaker . . . are you a fax-spammer?!

They print the Nigerian's emails...

Hotels are old fashioned. They like to get their reservation confirmations by fax

6:40 PM
@voretaq7 Heh, fax-spam. I love seeing those. Reminds me of 1987. :/

And we do a lot of reservations per day :)

@DennisKaarsemaker OK
Put them in the same space ship as we're putting the doctors in
and let's launch THAT into the sun.

B ark?
with the phone sanitizers?

@voretaq7 That space ship idea's not feasible. Just way too expensive to launch the billions of Luddites and technophobes into the sun.
We need to do what the British did and just deport all them to a prison island. We could even use the same one, and let them all be Australia's problem.

@HopelessN00b that's why we make an example of the worst offenders

6:44 PM
could we include the patent and copyright lawyers?
pretty please?

@voretaq7 So deport the worst ones to Antarctica, and the rest to Australia, then.

@HopelessN00b Won't someone PLEASE think of the penguins

@fuero No, patent lawyers deserve something far, far more painful than instant death. Even Australia isn't cruel enough.
3

@fuero Yeah, lawyers and bureaucrats are already at the top of the list. Accountants too. Notoriously technophobic professions.

excellent

6:46 PM
@HopelessN00b Hey! I have an accounting degree and work for a CPA firm. >=[

@ChrisS But you're an SA, not an accountant. (I also have degrees unrelated to my vocation - having a degree in [blah] isn't the same as being a [blah]er.)

The CPAs here aren't technophobic, for the most part. A couple are.

Lucky you. Wish I could be lucky too. :(

That's the problem with generalization. There's always one that complains.

@fuero Making a generalization about generalizations; awesome sauce.

6:52 PM
VSauce?

Arrgh...
"we couldn't unmount /tmp to change it to exec, so we killed a process called vmtoolsd... Was that important?"

@ewwhite get the banhammer! userdel!

@ewwhite, suitably impressed with Nexenta to put it in during my few days off next week.

@ewwhite Reboot!

@ewwhite what's the effect of mount -f -o remount on something like that ?

6:57 PM
@ewwhite I'm thinking you need to start a service for a lot of your clients. Where you provide someone do to do literally everything in their environments, because they obviously can't be trusted to do anything.

@tombull89 I'm glad to hear... it's pretty decent. I got pushed out of Nexenta use at work. We're going to use QuantaStor

@ewwhite There's a saying for that. "Everything's difficult if you don't know it" or something like that

Hey @Iain. Would you terribly mind to delete this message for me? It's terrifying, but I don't want to flag it. -- chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/8011702#8011702

@Iain let me try...

@ewwhite When are you just going to give me a list of requirements and VPN access and just say "go" :)

6:59 PM
@Iain nothing. I think it's the negated options... atime,noatime,noexec,exec - some things being implicit, some not

@ewwhite one question though, if I create a RAIDZ volume, is there a way to view the % resynced or does ZFS not do that?

@HopelessN00b Good think I broke 200 for the day at 9am

@ewwhite I meant on the daemon

@MDMarra oh noes... I need to catchup.

7:03 PM
@ewwhite I have 5 accepts today too. I can hit 275 with a little luck

@Iain nothing. I remount all the time... like the tuned-adm stuff I always talk about. It adds additional options to what you see there!

@ewwhite thats - that's all I was after for the moment.

@MDMarra Yeah, my rep-whoring skill suck anyway.

mine too. seems like I know only stuff no one else except me and the poster cares about.

@HopelessN00b show more leg.

7:10 PM

@MDMarra Ho!

@WesleyDavid Honey, you wanna get picked up you gotta show some skin...

@voretaq7 Yeah, problem with that is finding an appropriate leg to show more of. Sure as hell won't work well if I use mine.

Our Dell sales rep is incompetent
I come to him looking for 150k-200k worth of shit and he can't even group two separate quotes correctly

@HopelessN00b I keep one in the cooler for reasons...

7:15 PM
"Quote each of these configs with 1 CPU and the optimal memory config for 1 socket and then again with 2CPU and the optimal config for 2 sockets"
How fucking hard is that

@MDMarra Herpity-Derp?
Try "best" instead of "optimal"
these guys have trouble with polysyllabic words

@MDMarra buy HP

Ah, the joys of having a career where success isn't at all correlated to competence, skill, or even simple language skills.

does anyone here know ICAP?

@ewwhite If it were up to me, I would

7:26 PM
ICAP plc is a UK based voice and electronic dealer broker and provider of post trade risk services, the largest in the world carrying out transactions for financial institutions rather than private individuals. ICAP is an abbreviation for Intercapital, a name by which the business was previously known. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. History The company developed from a merger between Garban plc and Intercapital plc which created Garban-Intercapital plc in 1999. Intercapital plc was originally founded by Michael Spencer in...

This is for a collaboration with a partner organization. The vendors were chosen over a year ago

@HopelessN00b downvote.

@voretaq7 The problem isn't the memory config. The problem is that I need quotes for quantity 6 of 4 different configs. I should have two quotes 6x4 for single socket and 6x4 for dual socket
Except he sent me the quote and an entire config is missing from the single socket side and there's an extra $50k config out of nowhere on the 2 socket side
it's not rocket science

@MDMarra you don't do quotes often...

7:29 PM
"Quote 6x of these 4 things. Then, quote 6x of the same thing but with two processors"
@ewwhite ?
Are you saying they get screwed up a lot, or are you saying I'm being difficult somehow?

Salesreps are idiots
Best send off one request, and another request when the quote comes back

quoting hardware is soul-killing work

@MDMarra Clearly it is - you just don't understand it because you're not in sales :-)

@ewwhite Why's that?

@ewwhite most involving spreadsheets is...

7:31 PM
@ewwhite we're sysadmins - we have no souls.

@JoelESalas Nothing but paperwork.

@fuero I suck at spreadsheets
I'd rather sort in PowerShell and export to a CSV

@MDMarra DEVOPS

If it were DevOps, I'd have done it in Ruby and then used the data to break all of my front ends at once.

Or generate the data in ruby, then pass it off to Excel using the command line switches to generate a pivot table.

7:34 PM
devops doesn't require ruby

Say, speaking of soul-killing work, does anyone know offhand if DOS-based printing can use PCL drivers? Or do I have to install the PS driver for this freaking printer?

node.js will do

@HopelessN00b PCL

@MDMarra me too. But spreadsheets per se wasn't the worst, but being bugged by people to do it differently was. Lazy bastards wouldn't do it themselves.

@ewwhite LPT :)
@HopelessN00b DOS-based as in actual dos?

7:39 PM
@ewwhite Quoting projects is soul-killing work.

Just started Stage 1 of OS X Server upgrade, everyone cross your fingers for me!

in-place?

@MDMarra hells yeah

Dude, it's OSX Server. It's not like it's doing any kind of important services.

@ScottPack its also Open Directory
and DNS

7:44 PM
herp derp
You know what's better than beer? Free beer

@David That sounds like a pretty poor design decision. Have you considered hiring an IT consultant to check out your architecture?

@ScottPack Seems like they hired Steve Jobs :D

@ScottPack Nope. Not my say, they've been running it this way forever.
And they wouldn't pay someone anyways.

@fuero That dude can crank out the hours. It's like he doesn't even sleep.

All it does is serve files, DNS, and OD (to let people login to files and other stuff)

7:50 PM
We keep an ancient iMac client (!) in the server room around because someone needs Filemaker hosted on a Mac to god-knows-what.

@MDMarra Yeah, as in that. Doesn't much matter though, since there's no x86 PS driver (I know, shocking), so it'll have to work with PCL, since I'm not gonna let that shit hold back moving to a new print server. That's actually a print server, even.

@Cole you're recovering from surgery - you can't have beer!
Don't worry, I'll drink yours.

@voretaq7 the fuck I can't

@David Yeah, just files, core networking and directory services. Nothing important in that list.

@HopelessN00b Nobody is in today anyways

7:52 PM
@Cole it's in your post-op instructions somewhere, something about alcohol thinning the blood

@voretaq7 he said I could have some :)
just not go "overboard"

And the files are all backed up, as well as every server setting/file I could think of.

@Cole whose definition of overboard? :)

@DennisKaarsemaker exactly, but I'm sadly sober so clearly it's not an issue.

@Cole right, so you want a little 8oz sippy-cup worth of beer?
'cuz if you'd be happy the cocktease version of cocktail hour...

7:54 PM
I had a tall beer at lunch, Clown Shoes Black IPA mmmm

One day, I'll wake up an that awful imperial system will have finally died out...

@fuero hush up and bow down to the queen
do it now before she starts demanding weights to be expressed in proper Stone.

I'll bow to her as soon as she uses SI units, like the rest of the bloody world

@fuero Filemaker also requires mDNS to be setup, even if all of the clients are in a different subnet.

Q: Cable Managerment

user158051I manage a server room with approx 20 rack servers in two racks. I find all kinds of videos and such on how to manage the network cabling. That is fine, but I would like to see how power cables from the servers are managed in a neat fashion.

@HopelessN00b - that guy needs your surly advice...lol

@TheCleaner and he needs the title typo fixed

@fuero it's her bloody empire and you'll damn well use her units!

You know what I hate?

Now someone bring me a breast of tea!

@MDMarra Nah, dude needs to hear the solid truth.

7:57 PM
When people say "it's a mute point"

@ScottPack Thankfully I have nothing to do with it short of chuckling at it when I have business in the server room.

@fuero - probably because "Cable Management" was already taken...
@Cole - "We don't get french benefits?"

@voretaq7 That reminds me of the Farscape episode "John Quixote".

@voretaq7 If I were one of her subjects :D

@TheCleaner LOL never heard that one.
