Ugh, screw coffee. I really want a way to get cheap, pure caffeine so I can spike my e-cig or a glass of water or my breakfast with caffeine. No reason I should have to rely on the same way of getting caffeine that people started using 4,000 years ago. :/
@Dan Hey if it was legal, I'd be all about it. I'm just sick of having all this crap wrapped around my legal drugs that I don't want. Coffee is a caffeine delivery system, period. So just let me cut out the unpleasant delivery system that makes me have to piss all the time, stains my teeth and requires piles of sugar and cream to make palatable.
I think you're making this harder than it needs to be. You just set up default container redirection. Set a default UPN suffix on that OU. And just instruct them to make new accounts there.
but the path of least-resistance for me has been to give the superuser of each location Exchange server access... because that's how they can add/remove users/mailboxes
@MDMarra Well, lucky you. Even here, with our 1,000 users, that's the prevailing way of doing things. It makes me crazy, but it's just another one of those common-place idiocies you see when working for people and companies that just don't understand IT or technology.
@ewwhite Honestly, why don't you punch up a small script that prompts for the required information, and then handles the user account creation stuff for them? Not too hard in PowerShell.

I always just set the UPN to be the same as the email address and tell people to "log into computer with their email address"

not when users are used to just their username... I don't know how to stress how routinized and automatic many of the actions of clerks, accountants, warehouse and order-entry types are... I was chased down yesterday by Valley because a salesperson wanted a SHORTCUT recreated on his desktop.
If your users at Valley had a proper UPN suffix and were told to "log in with their email" then you wouldn't have had those TS problems where people were seeing LOCAL-PC\User
PSTs are not supported. They usually work of course but Microsoft reserve the right to point at you and laugh if you ring up complaining of losing email through it.
even that's crazy - pop3 instead of imap. Not that imap's perfect, but when backing up emails, I'd always rather backup one email server than lots of personal folders.
@MDMarra - pst's on a network share work fine as long as they are closed prior to whatever file level backup grabs that share. I know in BackupExec you'll get "this is a corrupt file" on any PST file left open. File still works ok in Outlook but isn't backed up if it is open.
@RobM - They need PSTs when your Exchange server can only hold 500GB and total mail for all users is 2TB. :) Personally, we limit the users Exchange mailboxes on purpose and let them archive things to PST files that they are responsible for backing up etc.
@TheCleaner I understand how that can happen, but disks in file servers cost the same as disks in email servers, so I don't see the benefit personally.

If you're in this situation - there's good news ... and very bad news. The good news is that this problem is very common and is a known issue. The very bad news (from the customer's standpoint) is that PST files on a LAN/WAN is an unsupported configuration. Some customers are very surprised to hear this but Network Stored PST files have been unsupported since the days of Exchange 4.0. (from that second URL)
@RobM - they store their PSTs here on their own desktop/laptop. It's a "IT doesn't support it, but if you insist on having more than 4GB of email then you will have to archive off those messages from 2005 to a local PST file. If it is lost, sorry." Personally, I'd rather go with a real archiving solution like Mimosa or whatever, but we don't get that luxury.
@ewwhite Well, yeah, but it always has for me I swear :D I've only had to worry about older OS's (XP / Server 2003) on the odd occasion I'm doing enough with them to warrant customisations. Newer stuff should just work I think
It just amazes me to be honest. I've been here 8 years, have no PST file, and have an 800MB mailbox. How we get new hires that end up with a 4GB mailbox within 6 months is beyond me.
because people are emailing them entire movies? I find that can usually be corrected by issuing the frontline support staff with a housebrick and instructions on how to hit users with it.
yeah...I know...more of a rant. We have one lady here that sends out GLOBAL emails with people that have birthdays almost daily. Instead of a simple "Joe Smith's birthday is today" it has clipart, etc. crap like a frikking Geocities website. Stupid things are 2-4MB each.
@pauska Well, there is one for Server 2008 R2, so it's not like faxes being archaic pieces of shit has stopped drivers from being created before... or fax lines from being installed in shiny new MFPs, for that matter... problem being that I'm pretty sure that if I can't find a way to make LAN-fax crap work on the new 2012 print server, we're going to have to stay on our current print/file server running Server 2003. <sigh>

@voretaq7 Gotta disagree. The whole thing with the starships being crashed into the sun was an attempt to break the cycle, which was (IMO), the only interesting or unshitty thing about the finale. Remove that and it's just "God did it"/unexplained and then everyone shrugging about it and perpetuating the cycle again.
@voretaq7 No, the cyclical time thing was a theme of the show (which I kind liked, TBH), but having a bunch of war/genocide survivors not trying to do anything about breaking a cycle of war and genocide is... just not remotely plausible.

I think you guys are getting too into the "god" in BSG being the same omnipotent creator of major monotheistic religions today. There were references to there being a fallen lord of kobol around the time of the 13th tribe's exodus. Sounds like a cylon god to me...
If you have a problem with "god" in the ending, then you should have a problem with the whole plot since it revolves around things like Athena's arrow, the book of Pithia, etc

@MDMarra Well, if not an omnipotent creator God, how do you explain Starbuck? I got the God isn't a traditional god theme, but you can't do that and then make the play with Starbuck where... God [re]creates a person out of thin air to get the cycle to progress as desired.
@MDMarra I wasn't much a fan of it then either (because it really did kinda come out of the blue around season 3 when something glitched in the God Cylon's God voice God circuit and every God other God word was God), but at least it was the belief of characters rather than "BAM - THIS IS HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS!"

@voretaq7 Well, anything that tries to explain the meaning of the universe is going to have to rely on $_MYSTERIOUS_OUTSIDE_FORCE as The Answer. Hell, even science uses that as The Answer to the existence of the Universe, so I'm not sure what could possibly make you happy in that regard.
