:|

ah well, I'm going to buy one again eventually.

A good coffee machine at walmart or whatever is 9$

Ugh, screw coffee. I really want a way to get cheap, pure caffeine so I can spike my e-cig or a glass of water or my breakfast with caffeine. No reason I should have to rely on the same way of getting caffeine that people started using 4,000 years ago. :/

@HopelessN00b express-oh, you said cheap.

@HopelessN00b You could start taking trucker speed...

Dan
2:20 PM
@HopelessN00b Have you considered heroin?

@HopelessN00b a little dash of cocaine should get ya going.
I just had to explain to my mother what a shart is, it's not even 10AM, fuck.

@Dan Hey if it was legal, I'd be all about it. I'm just sick of having all this crap wrapped around my legal drugs that I don't want. Coffee is a caffeine delivery system, period. So just let me cut out the unpleasant delivery system that makes me have to piss all the time, stains my teeth and requires piles of sugar and cream to make palatable.

@HopelessN00b No-Doz pills?
crush 'em up and snort em.

@Cole Why would you do that? "Look mom, just open up Google, and type the word in."

does anyone here use powerCLI in their vmware environments?

2:23 PM
@Cole Nah, I'm not snorting crushed up pills. For so many reasons.

Or are we all point-and-clickers?

@HopelessN00b because I referred to a Hot Pocket, as a Shart Pocket. She's like "what's a shart?"

@ewwhite I'm trying to get us to using it, but we're really entrenched in the GUI and not changing our stupid ways because... well, because.

@MDMarra enlighten me - what is a default UPN?

@HopelessN00b there's a point where ESXi should be scripted... but I don't know what that breaking point is

2:25 PM
@ewwhite I have used PowerCLI

@pauska UPN Suffix. I should say

@ewwhite I use it to mass-update settings like multipath policies and so on

I helped write ESXi scripts at $oldjob for rapid deployment of ESXi server for test environments.

@MDMarra I still don't follow.. what uses a "default UPN"?

@pauska I end up using host-profiles.

2:26 PM
@pauska So if you're FQDN is ad.company.com, you can make a UPN Suffix for company.com in AD and have your users log in as user@company.com

@MDMarra I know what an extra UPN is, we use one for each daughter company

So that they don't know that you're using a third-level domain for the AD's FQDN

@MDMarra I want them to login as "username"

@ewwhite then don't use UPN

@ewwhite Which will happen by default

2:27 PM
BLAH\username

@pauska So what's the question then?

@MDMarra what is a default UPN?

@MDMarra or I just use .local and there's no confusion when creating users.

cause we select one on each user. There is no default.
aha

@pauska You can set a default UPN suffix on an OU so that all new accounts created in that OU are automatically created with an alternate suffix

2:28 PM
@MDMarra ok, I get it now.. the people who are going to create accounts is not smart enough to select the correct domain on the user

@pauska YES!!!
especially in my case

then mark's solution is excellent

but these people aren't too good with OU's either

um
that's your job mate
not using OU's is impending doom

@ewwhite Well, at some point you gotta... I mean, there's a limit. You just can't fix stupid.

2:29 PM
I think you're making this harder than it needs to be. You just set up default container redirection. Set a default UPN suffix on that OU. And just instruct them to make new accounts there.

you have to tell them how to use the system properly

This is AD, if your users can't even use office they shouldn't be making user accounts

if they can't figure out how to create a user in a OU then they should just have you on part time staff or something
oh and btw, copying a user keeps the UPN suffix

If they can't handle OUs or selecting the right option when creating an account, well, then they shouldn't be creating accounts.

But in most Exchange environments, people manage users with the EMC.

2:30 PM
@mdmarra do you know if the upn is inherited on the OU?

@pauska I believe that it is
@ewwhite They do?

@ewwhite uhhh
they do not

Create...
That's what I was instructed... at SWC.

@ewwhite Right and if you do default container redirection to a base user OU with that suffix set on it, then it's a non-issue

normal AD user management is done with the AD Users and Computers.

2:32 PM
@MDMarra not sure if EMC picks that up tho
@ewwhite why can't you instruct them to first create the user in AD and set up info/group memberships first?

@MDMarra Yeah, they do. It's only once you reach a size level where you just can't manage it in a GUI that companies tend not to use the EMC.

@pauska It should create it in the default container.

@MDMarra yeah but it has a UPN field already populated when you get that far
unless it reads the default OU..? no idea

but the path of least-resistance for me has been to give the superuser of each location Exchange server access... because that's how they can add/remove users/mailboxes

@HopelessN00b I've never seen anyone create new user accounts in EMC unless it's just a mail contact or something

2:33 PM

@MDMarra it's pretty standard at my level... (<200 users)

What's the valid use for that moderators?
^^

@ewwhite up to 200 users without someone who can be schooled into adding users properly? COME ON...
oh well. I'm not on your payroll. Use a .local domain and be happy.
:-)

@pauska Lots of turnover and short-term warehouse workers...
So the user adds/deletes come frequently... and the person who manages this is usually a manager or accountant/controller.
lots of small businesses run this way

@MDMarra Well, lucky you. Even here, with our 1,000 users, that's the prevailing way of doing things. It makes me crazy, but it's just another one of those common-place idiocies you see when working for people and companies that just don't understand IT or technology.

2:35 PM
@ewwhite and that manger/accountant/controller can't read a guide/instruction on how to add users?

@HopelessN00b at your level, that should be automated, right?

@ewwhite easier said than done

@pauska Nope. (Well, in my experience, that's the answer.)

automation is great when you have a homogeneous environment.. once you add some third-party software with it's own quirks..

To automate it you really need a centralized HR database

2:36 PM
I've seen trading firms where HR types "new user name" and all mail, linux, accounting, etc. systems are tied in and everything gets provisioned

@MDMarra I'm pushing hard to move everything to AD here.. not an easy task :(

@ewwhite Maybe. We have such a low turnover rate that it doesn't matter, or isn't worth the time investment in automating such an uncommon task.

Our HR uses "cloud" stuff so IT doesn't have access to the underlying data to query and automate
at $university it was entirely automated
9am every morning a job ran that disabled or created accounts based on a really long query and like 300 lines of VB

@MDMarra Yeah, we don't have that either, so the benefits of automating the process are pretty small.

@MDMarra uPNSuffixes? What's the format?
or syntax

2:38 PM
For what?

@pauska With some training, yes...

@ewwhite Honestly, why don't you punch up a small script that prompts for the required information, and then handles the user account creation stuff for them? Not too hard in PowerShell.

they can understand adding a user in a specific OU... or selecting it in EMC.
but moving people... and seeing the dropdown for @ad.davalansales.com versus @davalansales.com may be confusing.

Yeah, I just dunno how to deal with that, TBH.

@ewwhite They won't have to touch that. That's what I've been saying

2:43 PM
just use the default?

You can make it so that all new accounts made in a specific OU have the one that you want
So if you can tell them to make accounts in a specific OU, then you can configure that OU to always use @davalansales.com as the default suffix

@MDMarra what's the harm in using the default?
Since I KNOW it will happen.

There isn't any, but if users ever have to use their UPN for anything then they'll have to remember to use @ad.davalansales.com
I always just set the UPN to be the same as the email address and tell people to "log into computer with their email address"
Makes things much simpler
@pauska Oh, you mean for the actual attribute? It's just the suffix. I don't remember if it has a leading @ or not in the attribute..I always have to look it up

not when users are used to just their username... I don't know how to stress how routinized and automatic many of the actions of clerks, accountants, warehouse and order-entry types are... I was chased down yesterday by Valley because a salesperson wanted a SHORTCUT recreated on his desktop.

We are considering dumping LCS05 for a corporate rollout of skype instead of going to latest version of OCS. Bad idea for 750+ people?

2:51 PM
@ewwhite If they're just going to walk up to a computer and type in a user name then the UPN doesn't mean a thing

we have staff here who have screaming hysterics if a shortcut on their desktop moves about, let alone just having one re-created @ewwhite

That doesn't make is less of a good practice to set a nice looking suffix when possible and use container redirection for user and computer accounts

@MDMarra That's how they get into the Linux systems..

@RobM That's pretty common where I am as well. People love them some shortcuts....just not enough to learn how to create them.

@jscott exactly!

2:52 PM
depressing but true

If your users at Valley had a proper UPN suffix and were told to "log in with their email" then you wouldn't have had those TS problems where people were seeing LOCAL-PC\User

@MDMarra true

That's the kind of thing that, literally, 15 extra minutes of work, circumvents
I mean, I know there's a training element to it
But from the actual technical side, it's like 15-30 minutes to do
And if the users never use it, then ok. If they end up needing it, then it saves headaches

@MDMarra this project has lasted two years, 3 Windows consultants and two hardware refreshes

Sounds like we should have met up in chat two years ago :)
could have saved everyone a lot of time and I'd have more money in my wallet

2:55 PM
The local Windows consultants put all the hacky stuff you saw in place.

at valley?

dewie bodgett & howe

the SWC-style corporate admins were too expensive and got pulled away for higher-revenue projects
@MDMarra yep.

Oh, I get that sometimes it's best to just leave things the way they are and patch up the big leaks (like the file server)

@MDMarra like redirecting PST's to \\file\users\username\_pst\

2:57 PM
But in the case of this new place, there's a chance to get a fresh start and get it right

O_o

Also, I don't even think PSTs on a network share are supported, are they?

not really

Or is it Offline Files that doesn't work when PSTs are on a network share
I forget

PSTs are not supported. They usually work of course but Microsoft reserve the right to point at you and laugh if you ring up complaining of losing email through it.

2:58 PM
@MDMarra That's why this was common...

haha yeah
I remember seeing that

If you're running exchange, users shouldn't need PSTs

@RobM they were on Linux Pop3
I moved them to Exchange in the process.

Dan
@ewwhite You got a few mins to help me with a sanity check?

even that's crazy - pop3 instead of imap. Not that imap's perfect, but when backing up emails, I'd always rather backup one email server than lots of personal folders.

2:59 PM
@Dan yep

Dan
@ewwhite vSphere 5.0 - should it do Windows 7 customisations out of the box?

@MDMarra - pst's on a network share work fine as long as they are closed prior to whatever file level backup grabs that share. I know in BackupExec you'll get "this is a corrupt file" on any PST file left open. File still works ok in Outlook but isn't backed up if it is open.

@TheCleaner It must be offline files then

5.1? Yes, you can do hostname, network, serial #, domain and save it in a profile

@TheCleaner it "works" until it doesn't but it's not supported.

3:01 PM
@RobM - They need PSTs when your Exchange server can only hold 500GB and total mail for all users is 2TB. :) Personally, we limit the users Exchange mailboxes on purpose and let them archive things to PST files that they are responsible for backing up etc.

@TheCleaner I understand how that can happen, but disks in file servers cost the same as disks in email servers, so I don't see the benefit personally.

@TheCleaner Yeah, they also need PSTs when you're running 1400 mailboxes on Exchange 2003 Standard. <sigh>

Dan
@ewwhite 5.0 I think - not our install

WTF?

Q: GPT Partition corrupt

Jamie HI have a little bit of a story. I spilt hot chocolate on my lovely Lenovo Ultrabook and killed it. I fixed it and put a new keyboard in. Windows was running quite slowly so I went to do the Windows 8 reinstall because it was UEFI and it worked. Unfortunately within about 30 minutes it was at 2% s...

3:04 PM
hmmm, I believe so.

Looks like a 'Power User'

Dan
@ewwhite Me too - I'll send you the screenshot when we try. There are no sysprep files for Windows 7 to add in

If you're in this situation - there's good news ... and very bad news. The good news is that this problem is very common and is a known issue. The very bad news (from the customer's standpoint) is that PST files on a LAN/WAN is an unsupported configuration. Some customers are very surprised to hear this but Network Stored PST files have been unsupported since the days of Exchange 4.0. (from that second URL)

Dan
@ewwhite ^^

@RobM - they store their PSTs here on their own desktop/laptop. It's a "IT doesn't support it, but if you insist on having more than 4GB of email then you will have to archive off those messages from 2005 to a local PST file. If it is lost, sorry." Personally, I'd rather go with a real archiving solution like Mimosa or whatever, but we don't get that luxury.

3:05 PM
@Dan weird... I guess not!

@TheCleaner I just turned adding data to PSTs off.

@Dan I believe you need to copy the sysprep files from a working version of that windows to a specific folder on the vcenter server
I've seen that before

Dan
@ewwhite Well, yeah, but it always has for me I swear :D I've only had to worry about older OS's (XP / Server 2003) on the odd occasion I'm doing enough with them to warrant customisations. Newer stuff should just work I think

@MikeyB We need a VLQ or asker is on crack close reason.

That goes away when you copy the right shit

Dan
3:06 PM
@MDMarra Even for Win Vista onwards

Um, I've never done it with a desktop OS, but I believe so

It just amazes me to be honest. I've been here 8 years, have no PST file, and have an 800MB mailbox. How we get new hires that end up with a 4GB mailbox within 6 months is beyond me.

@TheCleaner Because people use their email accounts as a filing system. Happens all over, and that's the reason I've seen in every case.

@TheCleaner never delete... attachments... getting their Facebook and AdultFriendFinder email at work...
6

because people are emailing them entire movies? I find that can usually be corrected by issuing the frontline support staff with a housebrick and instructions on how to hit users with it.

yeah...I know...more of a rant. We have one lady here that sends out GLOBAL emails with people that have birthdays almost daily. Instead of a simple "Joe Smith's birthday is today" it has clipart, etc. crap like a frikking Geocities website. Stupid things are 2-4MB each.

ok that person would definitely have been sorted out here by now.

@TheCleaner Yeah, I love how HR problems like not firing stupid jackasses become IT's problem.

@TheCleaner and a purple cursive font?

@TheCleaner hnnnngggg

Dan
3:16 PM
@MDMarra So have you had to add Sysprep files for Server 2008 / R2?

Pretty sure
It's been a while since I've set up a vCenter though

Dan
What folder do you put them in, cos the structure only goes up to 2003 / XP

@MDMarra atrophying...

Dan
(TBH, I think there is something broke here)

@ewwhite Something always is
Looks like you don't need to do it after XP/2003

3:24 PM
Can we just bury XP/2003 and let them rest in peace already?

@MDMarra Very true. As long as it's not something important, that's fine... which is why it's OK that my brain is atrophying. :)
@Cole That would be heaven on earth, so no.

so my nipples no longer look like uncooked bacon

... and now that you don't have breasts, how your nipples look really doesn't matter either. :)

Dan
@MDMarra Yeah, been all the way through that. Convinced it's a fault

@HopelessN00b hooray!

3:45 PM
Well, that's fucking wonderful. There's no Ricoh LAN-Fax driver for Server 2012.

@HopelessN00b Yeah, I wonder why there isn't a FAX driver for windows 2012
2

@pauska Well, there is one for Server 2008 R2, so it's not like faxes being archaic pieces of shit has stopped drivers from being created before... or fax lines from being installed in shiny new MFPs, for that matter... problem being that I'm pretty sure that if I can't find a way to make LAN-fax crap work on the new 2012 print server, we're going to have to stay on our current print/file server running Server 2003. <sigh>

Dan
@HopelessN00b Doesn't the 2008 R2 driver work?

@Dan In the process of finding out now. Which takes a while, because I have to locate and operate a fucking fax machine.

Dan
@HopelessN00b :D

4:10 PM
@MDMarra I'm so down on it because "God did it! It was all God! Be nice to your Aibo or it'll leak oil on your shoe! Now we're gonna send all of our starships crashing into the sun!" is a shit ending to an awesome series
It would have been mostly redeemed if the ships were dumped on the far side of the moon, or on Mars, or something

@voretaq7 Gotta disagree. The whole thing with the starships being crashed into the sun was an attempt to break the cycle, which was (IMO), the only interesting or unshitty thing about the finale. Remove that and it's just "God did it"/unexplained and then everyone shrugging about it and perpetuating the cycle again.

@HopelessN00b everyone is shrugging about it and perpetuating the cycle anyway - that's the closing montage!
I would have ditched the ships and ended the whole thing right after Starbuck's Jesus disappearance and Roslyn dying.

@voretaq7 Yeah but the whole point was "You know he doesn't like that name"

@voretaq7 No, the cyclical time thing was a theme of the show (which I kind liked, TBH), but having a bunch of war/genocide survivors not trying to do anything about breaking a cycle of war and genocide is... just not remotely plausible.

@MDMarra it's OK, I have about 50 of them I'm sure he'll like one of them.
@HopelessN00b Breaking a cycle by eradicating all memory of it is not remotely plausible to anyone who's ever studied history of psychology - I have the misfortune of having studied both

4:19 PM
Haha. I meant that the way they said that, I took it as meaning it wasn't an omnipotent creator like most religions worship but maybe just a crazy alien thing like a Q or something

HP is about to get the smackdown

so unless you're saying EVERY historian and shrink in the fleet died on New Caprica (and yet somehow they saved the fucking LAWYERS?) it's a pretty big hole IMHO

The religious overtones didn't bother me, because it essentially said that if there is a god, all religions on earth got it wrong anyway

@voretaq7 Well, of course it's not a solution that's going to work, but isn't that the history of the world? Even when the people in charge try to fix things (rather than line their own pockets), they only ever manage to fuck things up worse.

Also, there are references to "god" just being a fallen lord of kobol

4:22 PM
@MDMarra Head Baltar and Head Six are apparently Angels, and Starbuck is a Jesus allegory. I can get behind that - fine, whatever. But the whole "launch the remains of our fleet into the sun, bury our heads in the sand, and hey look 40,000 years later here we are making the same damned mistakes and kicking our robopuppies" thing just feels like a cop-out

I wasn't disappointed with the ending at all. In fact, it's what I thought would happen overall
@voretaq7 The bad Cylons found them on new caprica because of a radiation signature
You think they were willing to risk keeping ships around? especially if they were about to settle in?

@MDMarra PsychoCavil ate a bullet, I don't think the cylons are much of a threat anymore

There was more than that one Cavil left, though
That was a pretty great scene though

but how many are psycho
(well THAT psycho)

It sounded like all of them were

4:23 PM
@MDMarra that was apparently unscripted :)

They completely destroyed the daniels

@voretaq7 launch the remains of our fleet into the sun, bury our heads in the sand, and hey look 40,000 years later here we are making the same damned mistakes and kicking our robopuppies doesn't sound like a cop out to me, so much as a concise and accurate summary of human history.

it was one of those "All this shit is going on -- fuck it, I'm just gonna shoot myself"

I am pissed that the piano player didn't end up being a single escaped daniel, who would have been kara's dad

@HopelessN00b we don't tend to launch our ships into the sun
(unless of course we need to recycle that paper to copy a bible on, then fuck scientific notes, just bleach it out and get to illuminating!)

4:25 PM
2 mins ago, by MDMarra
@voretaq7 The bad Cylons found them on new caprica because of a radiation signature
2 mins ago, by MDMarra
You think they were willing to risk keeping ships around? especially if they were about to settle in?
Fool me once..shame on...shame on me. Fool me twice...well you can't get fooled again.

@voretaq7 Luddites. Government and technology being opposed to each other. Etc. I'm sure if we ever get to the point where we have spaceships, someone will have the bright idea of crashing them into a star.

@HopelessN00b no our bright idea is to crash them back into the planet right now. Reusable launch platforms are overrated dontchyakno

@MDMarra Right, that and the Starbuck thing really bugged me. Perils of not thinking through the consequences of writing in unexplainable plot holes because of "coolnees."

@HopelessN00b I didn't think there was a plot hole with either of those things

@MDMarra meh, I'm just not a fan of the whole "Starbuck is Jesus, God Did It" thing which frankly turns me off on the whole ending

4:27 PM
I just think they missed an opportunity to make her a half&half since she ended up being the savior of both sides
She's not a Jesus allegory though
Well, I mean I could see a case for it

I know if they hadn't framed it that way they would have had no exposition for the "Hera is Eve" thing, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth
@MDMarra OK, pick another famous prophet who dies and rises again to lead their people to the promised land

Kara Thrace

@MDMarra Well, to me, the problem was the contradiction it sets up with "God did it" versus the strong implications of free will in that ending scene. That and Starbuck being a textbook Dues Ex Machina, which is just crappy writing/storytelling.

(bonus points for one incongruously portrayed as blonde in modern media despite all logic and evidence to the contrary)

I think you guys are getting too into the "god" in BSG being the same omnipotent creator of major monotheistic religions today. There were references to there being a fallen lord of kobol around the time of the 13th tribe's exodus. Sounds like a cylon god to me...
If you have a problem with "god" in the ending, then you should have a problem with the whole plot since it revolves around things like Athena's arrow, the book of Pithia, etc
The way I look at it, all of those things are on a level playing field
Just the "god" of the 13th tribe chose to send a couple of visions to intervene in things

4:33 PM
My god... what did I walk into?

@ewwhite nerds

do. not. want.

I generally dislike the stereotype of IT people being the kind of people that get into arguments about comics and scifi (and I was never into comics), but every now and then I slide right into it

@MDMarra Well, if not an omnipotent creator God, how do you explain Starbuck? I got the God isn't a traditional god theme, but you can't do that and then make the play with Starbuck where... God [re]creates a person out of thin air to get the cycle to progress as desired.

@MDMarra I have a problem with using $_MYSTERIOUS_OUTSIDE_FORCE as The Answer

4:37 PM
It was alluded to and hinted at since the beginning though
It's not a plot hole of deus ex machina unless it comes out of the blue

@MDMarra What "it" are you talking about here? Starbuck, or the larger God theme?

@MDMarra I wasn't much a fan of it then either (because it really did kinda come out of the blue around season 3 when something glitched in the God Cylon's God voice God circuit and every God other God word was God), but at least it was the belief of characters rather than "BAM - THIS IS HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS!"
I could buy the Cylons believing in God the omnipotent creator (how many times have we seen machines that worship their "creator" - hell it was a major feature in Tron and it was old then), but I have a harder time with the rest of it
@MDMarra and it's REVENGE of the nerds thankyouverymuch!
we could also go with

Unsupported.

Q: How to upgrade Postgres 9.2.2 to 9.2.3 on a CentOS box

A4JWhat is the correct way to upgrade Postgres to 9.2.3? (I would prefer not to have to delete/restore my databases if possible.) Edit: Repo list base | 3.7 kB 00:00 cr | 3.0 kB ...

@voretaq7 Well, anything that tries to explain the meaning of the universe is going to have to rely on $_MYSTERIOUS_OUTSIDE_FORCE as The Answer. Hell, even science uses that as The Answer to the existence of the Universe, so I'm not sure what could possibly make you happy in that regard.

@ewwhite I want to start keeping track of what % of things that I implement are supported vs unsupported

4:45 PM
50%

OH, man, someone kill me.
DO NOT DELETE Added this printer again to get a shorter share name for printing in DOS
<facepalm> Need to support DOS printing (in addition to faxing) on the new Server 2012 print server.

@HopelessN00b hahahaha I'm so sorry.

@HopelessN00b LPT mapping FTW!

@HopelessN00b well we could start by not trying to explain the meaning of the damn universe in a SciFi series :)
@HopelessN00b Fuck. You.
rename the printer to that
in fact, JUST FOR THE DOS PEOPLE, rename it to FUCK.YOU
and then revoke everyone's ability to add printers
and institute a process where in order to get a printer added you have to fill out a 6-part (carbon) form.
Which must be printed or typewritten.
(OK, I think that covers my hatred for DOS and printers adequately)

@voretaq7 Not mine. And if I could, believe me, I would... the sad thing is that this is a payroll printer. Without it, and whatever ass-tastic DOS-based program they're using we can't do payroll, so it's gotta be there. Which is another problem in and of itself... mandate direct deposit already, FFS.

@HopelessN00b or BUY ACCOUNTING A GODDAMN LASER PRINTER ?

@voretaq7 I'd rather just not have to support printing out checks for any asshat so backwards he/she doesn't have a bank account, honestly.

@HopelessN00b they probably have bank accounts

@voretaq7 They have several. They need some special printer for printing out checks, though, which is what this is.

shockingly some banks charge to receive direct deposits
@HopelessN00b does it print the MICR line?

@HopelessN00b You hate the government and general establishment, yet you're OK with requiring a bank account to get paid?
You're an enigma, sir.

@voretaq7 I think so, meaning that sounds right, but I try to avoid bullshit that makes my brain hurt. Like printers in general, or "special" one-purpose printers for checks.
