@MarkHenderson how do you scrap off SE chat ?

so i have this friend that works in the HR of a larger company. he told me what he does when he gets like 200 resumes he basically just throws away 100 of them to the gutter and tells himself: "we don't need people that aren't lucky".

@HackToHell Screen scraping is super easy

Neat!

@jscott Oh, you weren't around for that? We broke the layout with too many nested quotes.

4:10 AM
Any way to sort by number of stars?

Repeat and rinse until you get a page with < 50 quotes, or the page is identical to the previous page, or while you're parsing the contents, stop when you reach a star ID less than the previous maximum
@jscott Only by fetching all 30k stars and then running a manual query. But of the rooms and pages I scraped, anything > 20 stars was exceedingly rare

@MarkHenderson So there's no API for SE chat?

Last time I tried, I kept getting HTTP 409 errors

@jscott Nope and an official chat API has already been shot down by SE management

@jscott they've been very anti-API

4:12 AM
I don't blame them really, how useful would a chat API really be?

@MarkHenderson well we could integrate it with an IRC client

@voretaq7 Sorry but IRC sucks

@MarkHenderson Well, you're doing it "by hand" so maybe "somewhat useful"?

@MarkHenderson no, IRC people suck
IRC itself is not bad at all
though I prefer the automatic searchable archiving of SE chat
and the star wall is nice

@jscott I'm probably the first person ever

4:15 AM
Wow, you guys have starred over 29K things.
@MarkHenderson Wasn't there another guy, GeorgeEdison or some such, playing around with chat?

@jscott Yeah but his name isn't really GEORGE EDISON AT ALL
It's like Nathan or something
Thus, like @WesleyDavid, I have no respect for him any more

:)

@MarkHenderson Kitty Kitty doesn't like The Other Kitty?

@jscott It's all client side javascript.... I'm not really a fan of reverse engineering to figure out the black box, but it shouldn't be that complicated.
IRC chokes more kittens than Markdown
I don't know why anyone would use it these days if they have any choice in the matter.
room topic changed to The Comms Room: This is *NOT a place for 'Live Support', ask on the main site. // If you type in your password it will show as stars! [markdown-ate-my-baby] [markdown-makes-ponies-cry]*

4:30 AM
The password is *** **** **

Eyel1k38008135!!
Hey! My password's not showing up as stars at all!

Q: Bugzilla email issue

xianMy bugzilla system keep hit the following error: There was an error sending mail from 'bugzilla-daemon@bugzilla.example.com' to 'junxianchong@hotmail.com':Can't send data I think that is some problem with my setting and configuration. First is the urlbase I have tried setting it to bug...

. . . I want to just tell people like that to stop flailing around and posting fucking everything

Wow, so when you type your password no one but you can see it right? Sw0rdf!sh. You can't see that, right?

hunter2

@WesleyDavid All I see is the top of Hale Berry's head coming in and out of the frame...
JOSHUA

4:34 AM
OK seriously we're pulling bash.org quotes from 2001 now?

@MarkHenderson bash.org is still around?

@MarkHenderson You come up with something better!
@voretaq7 Oh yes... It's immortal you know

@ChrisS sometimes it has gems

bash.org/?99060 <-- Make me laugh every time
Also, doesn't one of the SE chat rooms have the dance bot?!

@ChrisS I remember when that one first hit the main feed, I gave it a - because it's clearly faked
There's a fucking typo where there should be a system generated message

4:40 AM
@MarkHenderson I suppose you hate all movies and TV shows that aren't documentaries, because they're all clearly faked versions of reality.

@ChrisS I would hate something claiming to be a documentary that wasn't
I fixed a stack overflow bug in my shit se says screen scraper (which was the real reason for only scraping 100 pages) - consider every single comms room star imported

@MarkHenderson Fuck.
2
YES! DELIVER UNTO ME ALL THE STARS!
See quote in context is still broken huh? 'cuz I just got one with @WesleyDavid and a flamethrower.
Hmm

@voretaq7 ITS NOT GODDAMN BROKEN ITS BY DESIGN

5 reloads. All from here.
I think you need to do some weighting :P
@MarkHenderson BROKEN AS DESIGNED?

fwiw cos I'm vein I checked what other people in other rooms were saying about it, and I got a few lulz at the 'context' button

4:48 AM

open in new window/tab works for that ;p

@voretaq7 If you really want it to work, middle-click on the fucking button

@WesleyDavid now you have two starred flamethrower pics.
@MarkHenderson . . . I ONLY HAVE ONE MOUSE BUTTON! DAMN YOU STEVE JOBS!

@voretaq7 I do so loathe my magic mouse

4:49 AM
@voretaq7 Then cmd+click and "open in new tab"

@MarkHenderson sigh Effort!
and it would only be so I could paste them back here anyway

like that one.
or This One -- Rape jokes are never funny.... unless they're about RAID5

I've come very close to getting the 64oz mug... The 100oz is just too damn big.

. . . I want a little mini Dalek that plays that sound when you hit it

Night night, pervs.

might be a winter project to acquire a mini dalek and wire it up.

4:54 AM
@voretaq7 I can't imagine how long it would take to steam 3/4 gallons milk.

@ChrisS you just need hotter steam

The temperature of the steam is pretty insignificant compared to the phase change energy.

@ChrisS You need HOTTER! STEAM!
Try using one of these to heat it:
A plasma torch (or plasma arc or plasma gun) is a device for generating a directed flow of plasma. The plasma jet can be used for applications including plasma cutting, plasma spraying, and plasma arc waste disposal. Thermal plasma DC torches Thermal plasmas are generated in plasma torches by direct current (DC), alternating current (AC), radio-frequency (RF) and other discharges. DC torches are the most commonly used and researched, because when compared to AC: “there is less flicker generation and noise, a more stable operation, better control, a minimum of two electrodes, lower electro...
that should be enough to get the steam system to supercritical pressure.

Eh, it runs on DC... When submerged in water that would cause electrolytic dissociation. An undesirably result, especially as the arc would eventually ignite the reactants.

@voretaq7 JUST FOR YOU: http://яѱ.com/shitsesays/?imadouchewithamac
See, I take requests; just expect to be ridiculed for them

5:02 AM
@MarkHenderson YAAAAY!

@MarkHenderson Verizon is using Afaria to manage their corporate Androids

that's OK, I can just make that bit of CSS invisible :P
Also I now demand something special if I access the site using lynx/links!

@MichaelHampton Looks pricy

I can tell cos of the diagonal stripe in the background
All products with diagonal stripes are expensive

5:03 AM
@MarkHenderson Probably is. But if you already have SAP then it's probably a good choice.

@MichaelHampton If you've already got SAP, then you got 99 problems son, and sap is all of 'em

@MarkHenderson Looks like they just announced something for iOS 6.

@MichaelHampton ...Google Maps?

@ShaneMadden One could only hope.

Won't download on my phone (yet?) - "no longer available"

5:08 AM
@ShaneMadden Not showing up on my gf's iPad mini either.

Can't see it in the iPhone's all store but I can get it through iTunes
And then hit "Install" under "purchased" on the iPhone

I emailed the link to my gf, and she was able to check the email on her iPad and install it through that.

Question: On iPhone, appointment has address, where's the button for "Navigate me to this Addy"? I don't have an iDevice and one of the owners is, um, techno-challenged, so she has an iPhone

@ShaneMadden Fuck. Now Apple will NEVER make their maps app not suck.

@ChrisS Should have gotten an Android. It damn near reads your mind, at least with respect to Google stuff.

5:16 AM
@ChrisS If it's recognized by the auto-magic address parser as an address, it shows up blue and underlined when you view the appointment -- clicking the link opens the maps app, tap the map pin to get directions there

@MichaelHampton I have an Android... Hence me befuddlement with this issue... I have a button next to the Address for this stuff.
@ShaneMadden And the auto-magic is generally accurate?

@ChrisS yeah, I just can't see using an iPhone myself.

@ChrisS No. It doesn't auto-populate addresses when I say Location = [some contact that happens to be a business]

@ChrisS Seems decent if the address starts with a number - the few appointments with an address as a location that I can find in my calendar it's getting right, including one with a location of "NEW LOCATION: 1234 Z St..."
But yeah, if the location on the meeting isn't a street address, no dice.

That should be good enough... It probably just the user being "techno-challenged" (like, extremely...)

Q: Installing Blacktrack/Pentesting OS on AWS/AZURE?

ReCraI tried good search but i am unable to get any help on this topic. Is there any official/unofficial way to install these OS on these cloud hosting. I don't know if it against there tos or not.

Really?

I hope he uses it to launch an attack against a government or something equally stupid, it gets traced because he's a moron, and arrested. That'd make me smile.

Q: How to upload own OS ISO on Microsoft Azure Cloud Platform?

ReCraI want to install Custom Linux Distro on Azure which MS Don't provide. Is there any workarond?

Didn't I see this somewhere before?

OFFS >=[

It's not all bad. I just answered a question, and then realized I'd written a much better answer not too long ago, and VTC'd the new question as a duplicate.
And anyway, it's the right time of day for crap questions.

6:04 AM
Isn't it like 5AM in Sweden??
I guess it's 7am, maybe he just got to work or something... That's still way before I wake up though.

$5 says he isn't in Sweden and his IP address turns out to be a Tor exit node or something.
And he just edited the open question with basically the same details as in the closed question.

6:20 AM
Holy shit, I'm at 165 rep for the day.

@MichaelHampton He spelled "Backtrack" right, though!

This time.
Doesn't Linux still run like shit on Azure (and Hyper-V for that matter)?

Doesn't appear to be a Tor exit... It's a small range, appears to be a company allocation
@MichaelHampton Not modern versions; MS integrated all the Hyper-V stuff and the code was accepted into the main kernel

Damn, I'm actually going to have to install Hyper-V, aren't I?

might be worth playing with. The features you get for free are a lot better then what you get with the free version of ESXi.

6:23 AM
Though I'm not sure I like getting the hypervisor for free and having to pay through the nose for the management tools. I can manage anything from Workstation to Enterprise Plus with my free little vSphere Client.

You can do basic management from a standard Windows 8 box with the hyper-v tools installed

What's missing?

Nevermind; it's a VPN endpoint. Probably not in Sweden.

Bingo. You owe me $5 :)

don't waste your time trying to use the tools from Windows 7. Using the 2008 hyper-v console works somewhat, but it is half broken when you try that, and you get weird errors.
@MichaelHampton compared to what?

6:26 AM
@MichaelHampton Well; the management console software is free... Hyper-V is free. The System Center suite is expensive-ish, though not that bad really.

I can create vms, start them live migrate.

@Zoredache Compared to, say, SCVMM

I can perform every VM task that I could perform with the free version of ESXi, and more
but I have only looking at Hyper-v for the last couple weeks, so I might be missing something

The most expensive System Center Suite License, at the highest retail pricing, is ~$1800/CPU.
Hyper-V Server is free, but you still need to license any copies of Windows you run on it...
So Server 2012 Datacenter retail is $4800 per processor... $6600 per CPU for unlimited System Center and Windows installs.

Needs Windows Enterprise for clustering too, right?
(though you'd want to do Datacenter for VM hosts anyway)

6:35 AM
Hyper-V Server can do clustering since 2008 R2; 2012 can as well. (that's the free one)

@ChrisS Ahh, gotcha.

@Iain Yes, yes... Delete my answer if you want to be fair. But that guy totally deserves it.

6:51 AM
I'll be so glad when the close votes queue is cleared out.

7:03 AM
@MichaelHampton incognito shows <200 - won't be long now

Maybe I'll pass rnxrwxrxrx before they all go away (it's been holding steady ~150 for the past couple days)

checking via incognito shows the correct total

7:19 AM
198, not bad.

The other day @voretaq7 said something about drama taking place on some SE site and many discussions in the mod-only chat room... was that to do with Physics?

There was considerable drama on physics

I saw this question on meta.SO
-9
Q: Is this moderator's suggestion a breach of the SE privacy policy?

Magpieprivacy policy here I was bumbling about on physics meta and saw this thread started by a physics moderator who went on to suggest (in the thread) using moderator powers to find out the identity of certain users in order to contact their schools/colleges and "report" them for posting questions on...

And followed it over to meta.physics.SE...
Ron was in touble on meta.SO a month or so ago for unrelated asshole-ishness. It's funny to read posts by his apparent followers...

7:34 AM
hey @Chopper3 How're you ?
@Ward I've seen Ron's posts on a few sites, I don't know if he's a brilliant maverick or a complete arse but he does seem to want to go against the flow which isn't great

Seems pretty clearly a complete arse...

He's banned on phys atm for something too

8:28 AM
@iain It's a relief to know we're not quite the only SE site with chatroom and meta drama. In fact they've got it worse I'd say. Even if his concerns that kicked off the event are sincere and genuine, there's constructive ways of doing things and there's what happened there...

@RobM I don't know why he had such a problem with the particular mod candidate ( I think it relates to something on skeptics ), few people appear to agree with him

8:51 AM
@Iain Good today thanks

9:11 AM
morning, afternoon, evening all :)

@Chopper3 good

Dan
9:38 AM
@Chopper3 Glad to hear, dude

9:50 AM
@Dan Don't suppose if you know if there's GPO settings to disable accessbility options? Students have worked out the keyboard shortcuts to turn on high-contrast mode and stickykeys.

@tombull89 Kill one of the students and write 'I won't stop killing until people stop fucking with the computers' in their back with a scalpel - you'll have to deny all knowledge of course - that might be more effective than a GPO

Dan
@tombull89 GPOI'm not sure, but there are definitely reg keys

@Chopper3 bloody, but would get the point across quite well.

Dan
"HKCU\Control Panel\Accessibility\StickyKeys"

Name: Flags
Type: REG_SZ
Value: "506"
That'l disable sticky keys on XP at least, almost certainly the same on Win7

eh
Friend of mine got sent a SAS hard drive instead of the equivilent sata drive...

Dan
9:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek Sweet

@Dan Cheers, I'll look around for High Contrast
@JourneymanGeek nice.

he has no sas gear ;p

Dan
@JourneymanGeek Oh.

well, he does now :P

fucking useless fucking twat head fucking cloud providing cunts
When I TELL THEM several times that we're trying to upload about 4.5 to 5 Tb of data then setting the storage quota to 10Gb, and then after I complain and remind them of the 5Tb thing, to 1Tb, isn't going to cut it. Cunts.
ahem so how's everyone else's day going?

10:11 AM
I'm seeing a bunch of adaptors for SAS to sata
those would do at a pinch right?

Dan
@JourneymanGeek It depends if his card will support SAS

ahh
in which case he's probably screwed
;p

Dan
@JourneymanGeek Some do

oh, there's no card

Dan
Well, his SATA controller

10:15 AM
he wants to connect a SAS hard drive to a sata controller on a motherboard

Dan
Yeah, I'd be surprised if that worked with SAS

considering he might be getting my old dell, its.. somewhat less than likely

Dan
He'll just have to send back the drive and get the SATA one I guess

thanks.

or sell the drive and get a sata one - depending on the size of the disk the SAS might be worth more than the SATA.

10:16 AM
XD
both of which I suggested
;p

10:32 AM
So. Damn. Cold.

... 3 drives
some people have too much luck ;p

Dan
@JourneymanGeek So he's now got three SAS drives by accident

supposedly

Dan
Can't just get a PCI Express SAS controller?

ya, thats what I told him
At this point its silly not to

Dan
10:36 AM
Actually, theyr'e quite expensive

System load average is 5.70 4.04 2.84 that's...not good?

for something like 900 bucks worth of drives?

Dan
@JourneymanGeek What are the drives by the way? 10k+?

apparently constellation ES2 3TB
so 7200 RPM
of course, random internet irc dude, all this might be bullcrap

Dan
Ah, not a proper proper friend

10:39 AM
naw
kid might be getting my old dell if he picks it up tho

Dan
Gotchya

also was asking about the heatsinks I finally got sick of keeping 'in case'

FYI: Do not ever put /home on a CIFS mount. Ever.

Dan
@TomO'Connor Does it not go well?

Jesus, I've racked up nearly 2k in expenses over the last month or so
I shit you not - a man dressed as a cheshire cat has just walked in
And I don't mean a fancy dress costume - I mean a full Disney theme park style job

@Dan Where are you today?

Dan
@tombull89 In Macclesfield at a little company just doing some proof of concept work for them
Oooh, I hate when I dont' notice that community has bumped an old post

Dan
11:30 AM
@tombull89 Do you think you'll apply for that primary school job?

@Dan Yeah, I'll certainly apply
Closing date isn't until the 7th Jan so I'll work on it over the christmas break.

Dan
@tombull89 Ah, cool. And yeah, you definitely should

@Dan to be honest it's something I'd love to do, the school has the budget and the drive to do it right, so that's good for me.

Dan
@tombull89 Yeah, I wish you luck :)
One thing that's surprised me in IT is how quickly you can advance if you really want to

@Dan It's also "getting it right" because while they might afford a C7000 and a ton of blades it's a primary school and that would probbaly be overkill.

Dan
11:36 AM
@tombull89 Maybe, but check this
That's for a nice little PRU (My photos suck, sorry)
So not as a big as a secondary, or a even a primary network, but the same building blocks and Enteprise kit which is great to see
It even has redundant cores (@RobM ;) )

@dan :p

Dan
@RobM Sorry, couldn't resist

hehe :)

Q: How do I add items to 'Favorites' via GPO?

Jack DouglasHow do I add items to all users 'Favorites', preferably via GPO? the screenshot is just an example from W7 but I'm actually working with 2008R2 Server and RDS

Ignoring my total fail of an answer, I'd be interested to know this

heh - what's running n them, VM-wise?

Dan
11:42 AM
(We just disable the Favorites thing altogether)

Oh I see the bottom ones are blades, horizontall mounted.

Dan
@tombull89 Yeah, it's the C7000's baby brother
They had 2 or 3 ESXi boxes, but they also had a physical XenServer box and two servers running a little VDI solution

Hi folks. I've flagged a question for migration to SO before seeing that it has been asked there already so it should just be closed as off-topic here. As I do not want to take the risk of having my part in a dirty migration, could someone cast two off-topic non-migration votes SVP?

A: Active Directory domain membership for a colocated server and its hosted VMs

Dan Should I deploy the AD DS on the Host or on a VM? I would really like the Host to ONLY serve the Hyper-V role for isolation and managability purposes. Without a doubt, your host should not be running AD DS. Definitely create a virtual Domain Controller. Should I join the Host OS to the d...

yeah, I think this is a general principles kinda thing, what you're right is true for any server level vm host
