@Adrian! just the person I wanted to see.
I think I'll just give you a login to my blog so you can read my resume posts. Stuff keeps coming up and I can't get solid back to back days of writing on it.
You can read the drafts, there's four in a row, plus two or three that are in various stages of decay.
But, you can tell me if they suck and also get what you need out of them to start redoing your resume.
You need that paper redone so you can get to work at a place that doesn't suck your soul out with a straw.

4:12 AM
@wesleydavid. Cool. Thanks. You need an email or something ?

@Adrian yarp
@Adrian You can email me at nonapeptide@gmail.com

Rockin.
On its way thru google's tubes
Cool. Thanks. And stuff just gets crazier there every day.

@Adrian Ta-da. Email'd ya back
And of course, change your password as you see fit.

4:31 AM
@WesleyDavid thats a bit like calling someone to tell them that you've emailed them. They're going to see the email anyway
(that happens to me about once a day with one client. "Hey mark, just wanted to let you know I've replied to your email" .... "Ok, great, thanks" "Ok bye")

lol
"I'm just calling to say that i sent you a fax to let you know about the e mail i sent to let you know i got your letter"

@markhenderson true. Wesley's nowhere near weird enough to blend in most of my email traffic. :)

I swear, whoever invented the traditional key missed a major design flaw

@MarkHenderson my co-workers used to walk over to tell me they emailed me...

I just took 6 keys off my keychain, no idea what they are
I think one of them is office[-1] and another is office[-2]

4:38 AM
Did you guys ever see the Blaire Witch Project?

@voretaq7 Haha wqell at least thats exercise
@WesleyDavid Nope

Remember that scene, in the woods, with the girl in the blue beanie cap. She was crying into the camera saying "I AM SO SCARED..."

@WesleyDavid Worst $10 I ever spend. Biggest disappointment since the crucifixion!

Well, that's me right now:

Q: uploading a python site to httpdocs?

daniel CrabbeOK - so we've agreed to host a python site, got the files and not sure where to go next. We use a dedicated server and manage it mainly with plesk which has a tick box for a python support but not sure what this does. @WesleyDavid Every time I see the word harbinger I think of the Collectors from ME:2
And that "I am the Harbinger" voice that used to ring out when 10,000 reapers spawn

4:42 AM
Everytime I hear the word harbinger I think of a laughing stoner.

Hah
I'm not up to date on my drug references :p

I think I may be the only person on earth who actually LIKES Shenanigans...
@MarkHenderson I AM up on my drug references and that's a new one.

@voretaq7 I was using that in the mid nineties. Where were you man.

Q: Safari users receive a prompt to select certificate when accessing my website

Datapimp23I have an ASP website on IIS6 that is equipped with a SSL certificate from godaddy. The website requires secure channel (SSL) and is set to IGNORE client certificates. In ran the SSL checker and the result looked fine. The issue that I have is that all users that use safari get the follo...

^^ WTF?
@WesleyDavid higher than a kite and not paying attention probably.

WHY DOES EVERYONE CENSOR THEIR DOMAINS
It makes life so much harder

4:54 AM
@MarkHenderson BECAUSE THEY'RE STUPID.

Its in a JPG, its not even googlable
(although how long till google start OCRing image search?)

@MarkHenderson they started yesterday.
:-)

@MarkHenderson I do because of client confidentiality.

it's GOOGLE man - it can do anything
@WesleyDavid fair enough, but then you know enough not to expect SF to be able to help you troubleshoot email, DNS or SSL :-)
I asked him for a redacted wire log, let's see what we get :P

Engine Room! Restrain snark warp drives in this quadrant! "We cannae hold 'er back much longer, cap'n!" Restrain snark, engineering! That's an order! "But cap'n, the lusers are thicker than the hair on a klingons butt!!"
The lusers are flying low tonight.

4:59 AM
@WesleyDavid shut up, your 3 letter link just got you rep.
as did your "why don't df and du agree?!?" answer.

I wonder if it's possible to make a contextually accurate single character response.
@voretaq7 Ohhh, lookie! I saved a life tonight! serverfault.com/questions/379057/…

@WesleyDavid ⃠
@WesleyDavid . . . I'll try not to hold that against you.

@WesleyDavid You can do two and three letter ones (Yes or No)

@voretaq7 Let me rephrase that. A contextually accurate single non unicode character response.
Unless that box that you just typed has some deeper meaning.

RED is the color of sex, and fear, and danger and signs that say

5:02 AM
When you stare into the box, the box stares into you?

@WesleyDavid It does. But your incomplete support for Unicode means you'll never know it. Enjoy your incomplete, empty, non-unicode shell of a life.

Guys, I need some help. The response that I want to give is not one that I will be okay with when I wake up refreshed and polite tomorrow morning: serverfault.com/questions/379067/network-balancer-for-lan/…

also... why is Joel talking about someone's foreskin on the star wall?
WTF is going on in here, and why do I miss all the literal dick-waving contests?

Hope that works.

@IgnacioVazquezAbrams I think I love you.

5:07 AM
@IgnacioVazquezAbrams Must. Resist. Urge. To. Have. Tea. Party.
also don't worry about @WesleyDavid, he humps everyone's leg like that.
also Rebecca is on vacation-- who is feeding the @WesleyDavid?

I'm licking the crumbs from under the sofa cushions.
Also, I found Mark's stash of Tim Tam cookies.

@WesleyDavid did I invite you to (or are you already in) the Workplace beta?
I don't think we have any consultant-type people there.

@voretaq7 You invited. I inspected. Didn't think I would be of much use.
I am grateful for the vote of confidence in my potential for productive discourse.
Unless you were just low on your leg humper quota.

@WesleyDavid Nominee, best quote starred out of context 2012
Also come December we need to vote on these: lmgtfy.com/…

why the fuck is that a lmgtfy link?

5:19 AM
@MarkHenderson beause I felt funny posting the long-ass google link :)
I think that one might win...

@MarkHenderson too much noise. Google is a better bloodhound :-)

Chuck it in quotes, then its an exact string search
@voretaq7 THEY'RE ALMOST ALL FROM YOU

Yeah, I'm going to have to legally change my name because of this place.

@MarkHenderson mm, your search was in quotes though. and when I hit enter it does search for the whole phrase
SEARCH IS BROKEN :-)
@MarkHenderson I'm the only one nominating (the one they point to is the nominee)
I think @WesleyDavid has the most nominees...

5:23 AM
On that note, I'm going to go cry myself to sleep.
Peace out, lovelies.

yeah, 0130 here, I should sleep too.

6:42 AM
I managed to pick my daughter up from school on the tandem today during a lovely sunny spell in the afternoon. Then the clouds rolled back in...

@Ward my neck feels much better today, I may try and get out on Sunday

2 hours later…

8:48 AM
caught a headline late last night, didn't read it properly but it seemed to suggest MS were going to start charging for some form of access to Bing - that can't be right can it?
Ever heard someone say "oh just Bing it"? nope

pfo
8:59 AM
bing? that thing still has relevancy?
and they are planning to charge (as in money?!) for that?!
what are those people smoking?

Dan
9:17 AM
Morning ladies
There's a Stack Overflow day!

...having to download the "mt" package to force an LTO drive back to hardware compression... I haven't touched that command in 6 years.

pfo
ahh the gold ol' mt.

In RHEL/CentOS, the package name is "mt-st"
wouldn't have guessed that

pfo
@ewwhite debian and ubuntu have the same name for that package
the "-st" actually says it's the non-GNU version and uses the SCSI-tape interfaces from the Linux kernel.

mt -f /dev/st0 compress did the job
phew....
I was modifying the backup software to integrate a hotcopy (hcp) device snapshot before running.

pfo
9:29 AM
LVM or fs level?

It's a third-party product (free) called hotcopy by R1Soft
Since I don't use LVM often, this is a nice alternative. A quick copy-on-write snapshot routine. It's just a kernel module

pfo
seems crummy
how does it work?
there is no generic means of quiescing IO to a block device in linux.

download. compile against running kernel.

pfo
sounds dirty :)

hcp /dev/sda

pfo
9:32 AM
why not use a proper LVM or a FS that supports that?

Existing servers... and I don't like LVM.
I could add an xfs_freeze.

pfo
may give it a try some time

but it takes less than a second...
changes are tracked in a dotfile.
****** hcp1 ******
 Real Device:           /dev/cciss/c0d0p9
 Virtual Device:        /dev/hcp1
 Changed Blocks Stored: /ppro/.r1soft_hcp_c0d0p9.cow_hcp1
 Mounted:               /pprobackup
 Read-Write:            rw
 Time Created: Fri Apr 04:28:11 CDT 2012
 Changed Blocks: 441.81 MiB (463273984 bytes)

pfo
well any snapshot approach which is not O(1) and takes more than a few seconds should be discarded anyway
hmm
can you merge/revert to old snapshots?
nice thing that you get the changed blocks in a single file that you can store away.

since the snaps are mountable r/w or r/o, I think it's a matter of copying back. Not sure if you can revert
you can keep multiples, though.
I've used in in weird situations like needing to check a filesystem's consistency while online.
It's part of R1Soft's continuous data protection software, but this portion is free.

10:28 AM

10:39 AM
ugh
I need to try that out post exams ._.

Dan
Reading the Daily Mail comments regarding the scrambling of 2x Eurofighter Typhoons to an aircraft who had (I think, from reading the layman's reports) set their transponder to 7500 (Hijack / unlawful act in progress) is certainly an interesting insight in to how stupid people really are

HP should really be better about this.

@Dan do you mean you stayed in your bedroom/computerroom for 1 month o.O?

@LucasKauffman No, downstairs in the office!

@Dan TV sattelite dish and Xbox360...in your office?
what's the catch :p?

Dan
@LucasKauffman :D

Dan
11:55 AM
So, is anyone here meeting up for this SO Meet thing?

@Dan I'll be spending the whole day travelling back from Islay otherwise I might have gone to Manchester

Dan
@Iain Yeah, was looking at that one. Don't want to be stuck in a room by myself with a bunch of random SOers, though. Programmers scare me at the best of times :D

@Dan I just noticed there is one in Chester too

Dan
@Iain Needs more SF people

12:37 PM
@Dan I'm going to my local meetup =D

'morning noobs
OOhhh, someone from HP (apparently) answered my VSA question!
And it was his first answer on the site.

pfo
@MDMarra what was the question?

5
Q: Configuration for a two machine ESXi cluster using VSA to present local storage to VMs

MDMarraI'm designing a little vSphere 5 cluster for one of our remote sites. We have some IBM x3650s that have 6x 300GB 10K RPM drives in them, along with dual quad core CPUs and 24GB RAM. Because we use HP P4500 G2s at our primary site, we have licenses available for HP P4000 VSAs. I thought that this ...

Basically a sanity check for deploying a two node vSphere cluster on servers with local storage and using VSAs to present that clustered storage to guests on those same two machines.

pfo
12:53 PM
yeah, would certainly be ok.
and it's for a remote site, right?

yep

pfo
you should work on your visio-foo, especially the connections look horrible :P

Providing services to < 100 clients
Yeah, I know I know

@pfo I didn't want to point that out.. .Thanks :)

I honestly never learned how to use it and it seems silly investing time into learning how to use an Office app when I have so many other things to focus on.

pfo
12:56 PM
so the kewl kids on the blogs use hand-drawn diagrams nowadays
so get a wacom and draw :P
and good designers know their visio, so visio skills are always relevant.

pfo
honestly - i think i got myself a few gigs only because the visios would look nice.

@pfo I'll put in a PO for a 20" Cintique right now

pfo
and management judges by the looks u know ;)

Heh, this is true. Fortunately, I'm not in a position where I'm doing the bulk of the diagramming
But I should take a few hours some time and figure it out for real.

12:57 PM
linkedin.com/… <-- Article about formatting your resume; the average recruiter only looks at it for 6 seconds. Good stuff =]

@ChrisS Mine must be good then. I get 5-6 calls a day from them
I don't know why they think I'd be willing to leave a full time perm position for contract work though :p
About 1 out of 25 calls is for something direct hire fulltime

Hey

@ITHedgeHog Hey

pfo
so i have this friend that works in the HR of a larger company. he told me what he does when he gets like 200 resumes he basically just throws away 100 of them to the gutter and tells himself: "we don't need people that aren't lucky".
2

@ChrisS Honestly, Pages has some amazing resume templates. It makes Word templates look like a little kid stuck a page down his dirty diaper
@pfo That is awesome
Terrible. But awesome.

1:02 PM
@MDMarra Word's templates are pretty rough these days. But if you aren't willing to put any time or effort into it.... who should want to hire that?

@ChrisS Isn't the sign of a resourceful person to just use a better tool and spend that time on other things ;)

pfo
@MDMarra makes me shudder an laugh and the same time.

@pfo That's terrible. I know people who do staffing professionally. One in particular, she looks at a hundred everyday. If it doesn't look "good" on first glance it goes in the circular file. She tends to work with people who's resume's aren't all that "good"
@MDMarra If your resume looks like you used the same template as half of the other 100 I got, you're not going to stand out.

I think it's crazy to expect non-design people to do a custom layout themselves
I'd suspect that some people that do have custom layouts and arent designers paid someone to do it for them. What does that prove?

@MDMarra You can always settle for mediocrity... As potential competition, I'm fine with that =D

1:07 PM
ha
Like I said, I get plenty of calls ;)
That reminds me, I do need to update my resume to reflect my recent vsphere 5/ HP P4500 project

When I last updated my resume, last major update anyway, I used a MS template and modified it quite a bit to match the look of my website (which is 100% my own original design). I need to update it too, as my website has changed slightly this year.

My website has animated gifs of naked chicks
Wouldn't go over so well
...or would it
j/k of course

Ah, well I use my website as a glimpse into the public "me".

My web site is clean as a whistle

I've been so busy with work, finishing my basement, and a crap tonne of other stuff, I need to update my site.
Just like Blog entries, haven't written on in months.... le sigh

1:11 PM
My site is just white and grey. I like simple designs and straight lines
My last one was 2/24. Doesn't seem that long ago

Mine's somewhat simple. I really wanted to keep it monochromatic with clean lines... I think I mostly achieved that.
@MDMarra Gray and Blue; it is simple =]

FRIDAY THE 13TH. Just leaving that here.

@BartSilverstrim What's ironic is my best days are friday the 13th's

@ChrisS Do you use any form of CMS for your site? Or is all hand-crafted HTMLy?

Friday the 13th's totally ruin horror flicks for me.

1:19 PM
@jscott It's currently 100% hand-crafted HTML & CSS (Google Analytics is the only Javascript). I'm working on a very light CMS, but it's been "mostly finished" for two months. =]

One of the rules is that teens who have sex in the movie, die. Always. It's a rule. But when Friday the 13th rolls around on the calendar, what do I find under bleachers and in locker rooms and janitor closets? NO BODIES. Totally ruins horror movie rules for me.
Maybe they're all in @chopper3's basement or something. I don't know.

can someone take a look to see if I made a calculating error somewhere? serverfault.com/questions/379174/…

I can tell you now you miscalculated my interest in looking :)
3

@Chopper3 y u so mean :(?

seriously though, you don't get to 6k rep on here and not know how to do that, I don't even have to look, I'm sure it'll be perfect
I was trained to be horrible

1:22 PM
@Chopper3 do I become like this if I continue my path to the dark side? :o

fingers cross yes

I don't find being horrible is necessary, I've perfected the art of a technical shut down on folks. Vent technical details it tends to take about 20 second for their eyes to glaze over.
If they last over 60 sections before walking off they're doing well.

@LucasKauffman Is it the "dark side" if it's the only possible outcome?
user image
2
even cats love bacon

pfo
@MDMarra everyone loves bacon. period.

@ITHedgeHog it's not necessary at all, I've worked in "Cunt-Factories"© for two decades, it's instinctive.
webuyanycat.com

pfo
1:30 PM
@Chopper3 what the heck is a "cunt-factory" and do I want to get it? :P

companies filled with nasty people

pfo
oh, i was imagining something more "romantic" ;)
does anyone know a MySQL PaaS that you can run on-primses/own gear?

@Chopper3 Lol, thats not a term I've heard before

No, I just coined it, but it's sufficiently descriptive

There is one guy at work who has made my shit list, he's about | | far from me inserting his head up his own arse.

1:33 PM
@MDMarra wtf did I just alt-tab into....

@LucasKauffman all are networks should be all our networks?

The boss told me not to work with him anymore.

@Hugh A cat petting a 1 day old pig
you're welcome

i'm currently at a customer that has a beer hour every friday

@ITHedgeHog rub the mic end of his phone in your arse-crack - it's the little things that give the most pleasure

@pfo Most of us get paid to poop too... but atleast we can pass this off as research.

pfo
and the client boss and other IT people are there too so have to show up :P
@Hugh working on that one too, but as external consultant I just slack off on the internet and bill that as consulting.
that sadly reminds me that I actually have to get some work done :/

@pfo I read that as extreme consultant...

pfo
1:40 PM
anyone watching "House of Lies" ?

Um...not at work.

Or at home.

No, but it's got John-Ralphio in it so I'm in

pfo
@Chopper3 it has Kristen Bell.

1:43 PM
meh

pfo
and she's a hottie.

Hotties are a dime a dozen.
One falls off radar, another springs up.

pfo
@BartSilverstrim true, but i live in the moment so that doesn't affect me that much.

Gave wife the Boy Meets World series on DVD for Easter...talk about old memories. They have phones with metal antennas
@pfo: Living in the moment...politically correct way of saying ADHD?
Or like that guy in Momento, with the weird brain damage?

pfo
@BartSilverstrim guilty as charged! (both)

1:48 PM
Reminded me Danielle Fishel is near my age. Used to have a crush on her growing up.

@pfo I've slept in the same bed Kristen Bell and Russell Brand pretended to have sex in in "Forgetting Sarah Marshal' - odd fact

@BartSilverstrim woops ur right

@LucasKauffman that I had a crush on her growing up?

@BartSilverstrim our instead of are :p

1:58 PM
@BartSilverstrim I just googled her, damn o.O

Fishel? Oh dear...are you in your 20's?

@BartSilverstrim 22

She played an earthy, hippyesque character named Topenga in the show. She hung around with the outsider geeks. They liked the character, she became a love interest for the main character.
After the show she wasn't quite as popular in media, probably in part due to weight gain. I guess she has a show now or something she hosts.

normally I only really like women older than me but I do make an exception for Isla Fisher, she's married to Sacha Baron Cohen now of course but still...

@BartSilverstrim she's really pretty

2:04 PM
I've just come to the point where pretty girls don't really phase me too much. Cute is everywhere in media.
@LucasKauffman I think she's still attractive, weight gain or not.
Hollywood would disagree.

@BartSilverstrim So... going to the strip club this weekend or the TV is good enough?

I don't bother with magazines or pictures anymore...they're all photoshopped ideals.

@BartSilverstrim She might be 10 years older than me, but I still wouldn't say no lol

@chrisS: gave up on TV when I got pissed at commercials and rate hikes.
@chriss: strip club - none nearby. Well, there's one topless place, I guess. But we'd probably end up seeing students there, and there'd be all sorts of mayhem from that.

@BartSilverstrim you mean topless students?

2:08 PM
If they're 18+, which high school seniors (and some juniors) could be.
Or even being seen there could potentially cause problems. One disgruntled parent, and they'll try having jobs terminated.
If you're seen with booze at a party on some website and a parent takes offense to it, they'll try going to the superintendent to have you fired. Or complain for comments on a website. We can't even say anything in the public comment forum of newspapers or risk getting crucified for it.
You give up quite a bit when you work for a school system. "It reflects on the school" when you have...you know...an opinion.

Hi all..

Hey
@BartSilverstrim Yeah, K-12 sucks

@BartSilverstrim I'd think you'd be more likely to recognize someone working... The most common day job for strippers (in the US at least) is Teacher/Educator.

@chriss: I've heard that before. But not so sure.
There was a teacher in...Cali? Florida?...fired for being in porn.
happened not long ago.

There was a TV Reporters fired recently for being a stripper.... Apparently she shouldn't be too bummed, the IRQ Income for strippers is 59-98k/y.

@LucasKauffman Yes, all SE sites require English (except the language sites for obvious reasons)

Bonjour! We speako only Englisho on the website-o. Please-o translato into Englisho. - typical American speaking non-English

@BartSilverstrim you crazy American :p
I started liking Americans more and more after viewing cops, don't ask me why

@LucasKauffman Must be the mullets... Business in the front, party in the back...
I started liking Canadians more after watching Trailer Park Boys.

I started liking footage of the bottom of the ocean and deep space probes after dealing with people in the public. I downright envy the Voyager probe now.

@BartSilverstrim You know V'Ger is coming back some day...

Mm...bald aliens with no personality and horrible accents....

@ScottPack don't worry. They'll follow it up with a series where it's better: she'll have hair.

@ScottPack You're thinking of the French.

@BartSilverstrim Sacre bleu!

@BartSilverstrim You're half right, it is true that I have trouble telling if someone is from another planet or French. However, those people are anything but hairless.

Ta - I get a seemingly pretend 404
There AUP limits are supposedly 1000 queries in 24 hours. I've done ~30 and now it's stopped working

@Dan 1000/day counted on what frequency? If you only get 20 per half-hour, you're over. =]

Dan
