most crazy answer I've ever given, but it's actually true

A: HP Color Laserjet issue

pauskaI've heard about people baking the formatter (yes, in a oven) to fix bad soldering on the HP P2015.. It's a crazy idea, but perhaps it would work as a last resort. See this or this video (warning, loud music).

Dan
I have absolutely nothing but contempt for P2015's

@pauska No, you've got to be trolling. Like the people who wrap their Xbox360s in a towel to "re-flow" the solder.

Dan
We put over a hundred in at a customers request and they were the biggest bag of shite I've ever had the mispleasure of working with
@jscott I can't speak for the Xbox360 but Solder does have a relatively low melting point which can be the cause of intermittent heat related failures.

@jscott But it actually works.

@jscott its true, it works..

1:30 PM
@Iain Why can't we double-migrate questions by default?

@TomOConnor I'm sure, for some, it may. But I can imagine it being the same as a proper re-balling/flowing.

@ScottPack Inconceivable!

@TomOConnor I believe the system wasn't designed to do that - people get lost. If we want it migrating elsewhere we have to follow the link to SO and then flag for their mods to take it back and send it to $appropriate_destination

An e-mail exchange with a customer:

Me: Have you tried a, b and c?
Them: Yeah, it still doesn't work
Me: Hmm, odd. Let's try d and e. But a, b and c worked for me.
Them: No, still nothing?
Me: This is really weird. Could you provide me with [lots of information].
Them: [Information]
Me: Hmm, and it definitely doesn't work if you do a, b and c?
Them: Hi Dan, it now works if I do a, b and c.

Except that took a whole morning and lots mroe e-mails

@TomOConnor That is fantastic

@ScottPack I did it to Gradwell Telecom earlier on yesterday. I gather it went down well
@metacheetr Thank you for the Christmas kitten- we all loved it in the office. ^CJ

Can't believe I just typed all this in response to such a crap question:

@Dan Yep, it's about to be closed and inevitably deleted and then your rep from it will disappear
forever

Dan
It was going to be a one line sarcastic response, but then I felt bad and it just got worse

@TomOConnor :D good work

I really want to get to 20 upvotes, then I get Reversal

@Dan "Despite the fact that it's managed within Windows Server" The Hyper-V Hypervisor sits completely outside Windows. Very much like Xen the old "base" installation becomes the Managing Partition. (Hyper-V and Xen have enough in common that on multiple occasions MS has been accused of hiding Xen at the core of Hyper-V, which MS has fended off every time)

Greetings. I think I wish to attempt something stupid.
Can't think of a better reason to keep breathing today.

@BartSilverstrim You've already had kids.

Dan
@ChrisS Dude, he was asking what a VM was - I wasn't going to put something like that to him :D

2:00 PM
This is stupid in relation to technology.

@Dan You just make it sound like Hyper-V runs "within" Windows, which it does not.

@BartSilverstrim You want to stay away from anything that uses larger than a D-cell.

Dan
@ChrisS No, I put "managed"
Quite deliberately

I am thinking of attempting to set up Ubuntu to run DRBD, create an ingx balancer, and migrate our web server to the DRBD systems.

@BartSilverstrim Doing stupid things gives you a reason to live? I thought that normally worked the other way around.

Dan
2:01 PM
In fact, I think I was quite clear in stating it's a Type 1 by definition

@ChrisS You'll understand if you ever get into state employment.

@BartSilverstrim If it's physical hardware, you might want to use Gluster instead.

@tomoconner - doing it in VMWare.

@BartSilverstrim Eigh. It might be ok if the backend IO is alright.

It's a lightly loaded web server.

2:02 PM
DRDB for that matter, might go BLAAARGH if the IO goes screwy.

I know that there's a dupe for this somewhere

Q: Benefits of using a windows-domain

JohnWe are a small business 5-10 employees, and would like to know what are the major benefits of moving from a simple network/WORKGROUP to a windows-domain. Thanks

Who has it favorited

@MDMarra Not I, but I can search!
2
Q: Domain vs Workgroup

TotoI run a small start-up with 3 people working in 3 workstations (running Windows Vista/7) and a server running Windows Server 2008. Oh, I almost forgot... we also have a linux server (inside a VM hosted in the Windows Server 2008 server). As we are just a few people with just a few nodes, we use ...

2:18 PM
I'm getting the impression that DRBD isn't all that popular...

@BartSilverstrim It's a bit dated.

Dan
Haha

@TomOConnor: if it's dated, what other duplication is popular now? I thought DRBD was the popular one.

@BartSilverstrim For block-level, I'm not sure. For file-level, there's GlusterFS
DRDB has that irritating problem that it has very limited scaling (3 nodes, isn't it?)

I thought it was 2 nodes.

er. even worse than i thought then.

Dan

I'm so close to 2000

I think you're good now

Dan
Yay
I can finally edit without peer review

Another 1000 and you can vote to close too

I'm not far off 10k now.

Dan
Yeah, I don't want that - I'm working on my 750 flag weight :D

2:42 PM
It's sooooo much more satisfying being able to close questions on your own though (well, with 4 other people, but you get the point)

Dan
Shush, I was chuffed enough with 2k :D

haha

I'm #49th on the all time rank.

I haven't looked at where I'm at. Probably not all that great

@Holocryptic 88th this year, 139th over all

2:49 PM
HOw'd you get that?
I'm 37 this quarter, that's all I know

hmm, I really should take some time to answer questions. Which I say every week...

Dan
I'm 353 apparently

@Holocryptic ooh, you're from Sterling. I used to live in McLean.

@TomOConnor Oh, really? Small world!

@Holocryptic Dad had a job at the british embassy in DC, so we moved over for 5 odd years
I was about 5 when we moved over.

Q: Windows Home Basic and Domain or LDAP

ramdazI did some googling, and everywhere it says Windows Home cannot join a domain or LDAP or is not recommended. But is there a way? We dont need an Active Directory, simple LDAP with Z drive is sufficient? Reason we have many Windows Home 7 users, and would like to add them to our LDAP?

There's always been lots of tech in that area.

@TomOConnor My dad was in the Air Force, so I lived in Germany for 7 years. Got to see a lot of things

@Holocryptic Third Culture Kids. It's the way to be.
Third culture kid (TCK, 3CK) is a term coined in the early 1950s by American sociologist and anthropologist Ruth Hill Useem "to refer to the children who accompany their parents into another society". Other terms, such as trans-culture kid, are also used by some. More recently, American sociologist David C. Pollock developed the following description for third culture kids: General characteristics TCKs tend to have more in common with one another, regardless of nationality, than they do with non-TCKs from their passport country. TCKs are often multilingual and highly accepting of othe...

@TomOConnor My mom is Dutch, too. I have a lot of family over there. I really am a mongrel
@jscott All my Google-ing says it can't be done. But dammit, I just know there's a way that people aren't telling me!

Dan
@Holocryptic More to the point, even if he found a hack, it'd be a breach of license

@Dan Brings us back to the "we need a " Don't be a twat" vote to close option.

Dan
@TomOConnor Yep

@MDMarra - are you sure that a wildcard cert covers the domain itself too?
because the same certainly isn't true of wildcard DNS entries

@Alnitak ISTR the "correct" way of doing a wildcart x509 cert is to put a valid hostname "www.domain.com" or "domain.com" into the CN and putting the wildcard "*.domain.com" into the alternateNames field

3:05 PM
sure, or vice versa
assuming your browser supports Subject Alternate Name

I’d love to have written this entry last week, but I just didn’t have time. Two weeks ago, I got the chance to head to Boston, MA and attend LISA’11, the 25th LISA Conference…or was that the 25th Anniversary? I always get those confused… Anyway, I had a really great time, got to sit in [...]

but would a standalone wildcard for "*.example.com" in the CN without an alt-name also cover "example.com" ?

CN is a type of SN, not a field of it's own right.

@Alnitak No, certain SSL engines specifically don't like the wildcard in the CN and only accept it in the alterate names. I can't remember which ones.

Yes the SN can be "*.example.com" and you can have a SAN "example.com"

3:08 PM
@ChrisS Yeah, I meant SN. :p

that's not the question - what if there's no SAN ?

@Alnitak The data gets stored elsewhere?
OH. different SAN.

I know some older SSL stacks didn't like wildcards in the SN, as MikeyB points out. But I haven't seen that problem for a while.

this is a follow up to @MDMarra's comment on serverfault.com/questions/342586/…

SANs aren't necessary.
Most CAs try to idiot proof their certs these days by filling in SANs they think are relevant to the cert you're requesting...

3:12 PM
sure, but a pure wildcard cert with SN "*.example.com" won't also cover "example.com" unless it has it in the SAN, too, yes?

Correct. A wildcard cert covers explicitly what matches the pattern. example.com would be missing the period right after the asterisk, so it would not match. It's more clearly spelled out in the RFC, but that's close enough.

that's what I thought.
yes, that's (kindof) the same way as wildcards work in the DNS - they have to match one (or more) labels, not zero labels

Hooray! ITIL V3 Foundation Certified! :)

hmm...looks like gluster might be easier to scale and manage.
compared to a DRBD block level replication scheme.

wtf FF9 already?

3:25 PM
@BartDeVos Not sure what that is, but congrats :)

@BartDeVos congrats - hard to learn all those phrases wasn't it :)

Yeah, I'm sick of the rapid versioning... If they want to tick the revision number then go for it, but leave Major and Minor numbering for recognizable improvements.

@BartSilverstrim Gluster's great but RedHat just bought it so I imagine it'll be vaguely chargeable soon

@Chopper3 Welcome back, sir! You need a hat!

Well, there's lustre, gluster, and drbd...drbd seems nice except it's not scalable beyond maybe two nodes and doesn't seem all that popular for recent distros in terms of howtos.

3:27 PM
@BartDeVos Flagged for being congratulated

Hey! it's Chopper!
How are you?

not bad, had a spot of man-flu for few days

neat, I didn't know how to link with time before

4:18 PM
I don't use Solaris, but they have a feature names CrossBow.
It can't be that bad, right?

4:49 PM
@MikeyB @JeffFerland I think I do deserve a badge for that...
(and now I'm not sharing last year's Very Yelling_Bird Christmas with you easily-offended folks)

@voretaq7 did you get the boot?

@MDMarra sniffles uh-huh
but rather than emailing you every 60 seconds I did Real Work instead :P

awesome

(well, paperwork...)

so it's you, TomO, and Shads that have gotten the boot?

4:54 PM
I think a few others during the animated gif wars
and to be fair yelling_bird IS offensive. But it's a cute kind of offensive. You can even get a squeezable plushie.

@voretaq7 why did you get the boot ?

(not a talking one unfortunately. THAT would be nice)

@voretaq7 wow....

@Iain I shared a link to @yelling_bird's twitter profile.
and someone cough*@MDMarra*cough convinced me to re-onebox him.

4:56 PM
@MDMarra yes you are. But it's OK, I'm already bad.

@voretaq7 would that be one one from Montana ?

@Iain ayup.

There's just so much I want to say, but I'm enforcing the "No Drama" rule on myself

@voretaq7 If it makes you feel better, I didn't approve the flagging...

@JeffFerland meh, I don't mind. yelling_bird is offensive.

@Holocryptic any news on a doc to git'r done?

Q: Windows server virtual machine

JohnWhat does it mean to install a virtual machine on window server? Thanks

@AdrianK Had a scan yesterday, waiting to hear back from the urologist on the results
@tombull89 Best just to walk away. As long as he's not running amok and vandalizing posts or something...

@Holocryptic ...yet.

@Holocryptic That's good. I sure as blazes wouldn't be happy about something the size of a civil war musket ball in my kidneys.

5:04 PM
@tombull89 Although he only has 1 rep. He can't edit or anything anyways
@AdrianK haha. The worst part is I have a cold or flu right now too. So it's a double wammy. My sinuses are shot and I just feel terrible all over

Ugh. And whiskey doesn't help when you have the flu. I've tried.

Someone mentioned Rock and Rye. I may try to find some somewhere

@Holocryptic :( would you get up and cross the room to pick up a $100 bill off the floor ?

@Iain I could be on my deathbed and probably still manage that. It's $100, man!

@tombull89 One of his other questions has 4 close votes

5:11 PM
@Holocryptic :) then you don't have flu

My personal best was finding a $50 bill by the trashcan inside a burger joint
2

I can't wait to see when that gets axed too

@Iain haha, I'll remember that test for next time :)

I've had flu twice and on both occasions I would have just left it

I'm still not all that clear on the difference between a cold and the flu

5:13 PM
also something something something about the world ending a year today?

@Holocryptic if you ever get flu you'll know - it's a seriously nasty virus

@Holocryptic I'm pretty sure the latter involves yakking.

@tombull89 That figures. My new years resolution was to make 2012 my bitch. It would be apropos if the world up and ended on me while I was on a winning streak.
2

@Holocryptic "week to go: hell yeah. this has been an awesome ye-ASTEROID FROM NOWHERE"

@AdrianK I have had some coughing fits that brought me close, but no yakking yet

5:16 PM
@AdrianK not when I've had it

@Iain Though I've not had the yakking part the last few times that I've had it after getting the shot. I tend to get "bacterial colds" that last a few weeks and require antibiotics to fight off though.

so many xmas hats

@AdrianK bummer :(

@Iain Don't pity me too much. That's one of the reasons I get 38 days of PTO each year.

@Holocryptic Two words: President Palin.

5:20 PM
@AdrianK You sound like you work in education
:)

@voretaq7 riiiiiight

@MDMarra social services. I'm net admin for a homeless services mental health and housing agency

.....I hate you. And so does pretty much everyone else in the USA :)

@voretaq7 I'd consider voting for Ron Paul just to see how fucking batshit crazy he really is

the only reason we don't lynch you is you're probably underpaid.
@MDMarra Comparatively speaking? Not very.

5:22 PM
He shows definite hints of being awesomely insane, I think the only way to fully realize his insanity is to put him in office.

@voretaq7 Well yeah. And my hardware & software budget for 500 headcount is half my salary.
@MDMarra Could he really be any worse than most of the others?

@AdrianK it's amazing what you can do with an abacus and a flashlight!

@voretaq7 Palin, Bachmann, etc are crazy as in bad-crazy

@MDMarra Bachmann is some kind of soul-stealing devil creature.

Ron Paul just seems like if you put him in a moon bounce with food and water for 20 days, he'd have the best time of his life.

5:23 PM
@voretaq7 Hee. I have 300 GX2xx workstations running Ubuntu via LTSP. Drinking is not optional.

You know...awesome crazy

Here she is stealing the soul from this nice woman. Bachmann (L) is actually 475 years old. Old Biddy (R) is really 21.
(according to the real caption the old lady is apparently a family friend. I wonder why she looks terrified?)

@voretaq7 Because she's seen what having your soul eaten does to a person

@MDMarra Someone photoshop in soul-lines from the old lady's scream face.
White House Christmas Card Drama
because that's what's important to our country.

@voretaq7 It's Palin, do you expect any less?

5:27 PM

@voretaq7 batshit crazy

@MDMarra MSPaint also acceptable.

@voretaq7 s/also acceptable/always an upgrade

@voretaq7 Well, to be fair, the Constitution is burning. Figuratively, if not literally.

@Iain Batshit ™-Brand Crazy. When Regular Crazy just won't do!
@Holocryptic yes but that's Congress's fault...

So I'm in the middle of receiving a whole bunch of hardware for a big blade shipment and I'm taking inventory of the Nexus switches. 7 of 'em are on the pallet in their own packaging, one is packed inside of another box. Huh, OK.
I open up the box and there's a giant splotch of birdshit on the box for the switch. Nice. Thanks a bunch, guys.
