I suppose I could use this campaign as a tryout for other systems, I'd be running this with another DM and a friend.
Well, more adventure than campaign.

Q: How many times can a Lvl 17 Astral Self Monk attack, including bonus action

WookieCutieI believed this was straight forward, but I had a discussion with one of my players who didn't see it the same way as I did. According to the subclass features, at 3rd level: [...] immediately after you use the Attack action with your astral arms on your turn, you can make one extra attack...

Q: Which type of horse does a character get as an animal companion?

SilverclawI'm currently playing a dwarfen cavalier. According to the rules, he can chose a horse or a camel as a Mount. But there are at least two types of horses: a light and a heavy one. Since he is a heavily armored dwarf, I would like him to have a heavy horse. But the heavy horse is strictly better t...

Q: What does the "combination" part of the Skilled feat mean?

user62908I was curious about the skilled feat when it mention a combination of three tools or skills in the Players handbook. Does it mean I have to choose three skills/tools, or can I for example, choose two skills and one tool?

Does True Resurrection work across crystal spheres? Could someone cast True Resurrection on Stephen Hawking since Earth exists somewhere in the Faerun multiverse?
Like, I'm pretty sure something similar was done in a D&D setting before, but for the purpose of getting hominid slave labor.
But like, what if you just need a really good Astrophysicist to solve a star-problem that your sphere is having?

7:03 AM
@Axoren The most direct Earth cross-over I know of actually happens with Oerth (the Greyhawk one) - remembering a picture of a kobold with like a shotgun?
but which edition are you thinking of, in terms of spell function?
3.5e's true resurrection worked like raise dead, a touch spell, and the range wasn't overwritten by the more powerful spell's description then
Meepo!

I didn't realize he had a shotgun now :P

@James The answer'd depend a lot on how the players are able to spend it

@Powerdork why did you delete your answer to the tenser question? Was it because of the tense comments? I liked your answer ,:(

It became inapplicable because the user didn't want to hear it and massively edited their question.

I mean, you're right that it's Ask Your DM. Even after the edit.

That may be true, but also, someone else came along with an answer that relies on other printed material and comes to a different conclusion, and I'm inclined to agree with it.

Fair enough. Mike's or Nick?

Nick.

Ah, I have an issue with that one :)

@kviiri I don't recall CR existing before 3rd edition. I'm surprised someone thought it was a 1st edition or ad&d thing.

@GcL Probably a misconception that means 1st edition

GcL
@kviiri Seems likely. I wonder what the prevalence of tag corrections is by edition. Are the vast majority of edition tag corrects no tag -> 5e ?

@GcL By anecdotal evidence, yep
The plain dnd tag is actually quite seldom used
In relation to specific edition tags I mean.

@GcL That would also be because the vast majority of questions are about 5e

GcL
I'm a fan of sane defaults. If the majority of questions that are missing a tag end up being 5e, probably just tag them that way instead of pestering the OP. The few cases where there is a different edition intended, but not specified are worth the sacrifice.

4:06 PM
@GcL Yeah--that caught my eye, too.
@GcL Unfortunately, to my thinking, the community doesn't really agree.
However, I'll reiterate:
@NathanS personally, I don't worry about there being two camps. Personally, I think that "reverting" would be better. And I'm very happy if a community consensus develops in the other direction--I'm more interested in ensuring that the community considers issues I see (from the behind-the-scenes vantage an elected mod has) as important and comes to a workable conclusion that it can/will put into action than that they come to my conclusion on any given issue. I'm surprised, honestly, but not concerned by this. — nitsua60 ♦ Mar 14 at 13:42

@nitsua60 The community that goes to and posts on meta might not agree.

@GcL It's hard to know what the silent majority thinks

GcL
I don't go to meta anymore, and I know I'm not the only one.

@GcL Which is the only way we really have--though I'm all ears if you know of a better way! I know that only something like a few percent of site users goes there, but it's also one of the most-viewed and most-voted-upon metas ever....

GcL
@nitsua60 I can tell you when a dish leaves a bad taste in my mouth even if I don't know how to cook a better dish.

4:14 PM
@GcL That's fine--I'm not trying to sway you or anything. But I am honestly glad to hear if you know a better way that we could use.

@GcL Unfortunately, this isn't about dishes. With dishes, you can always get a good one if you pay for someone to get it for you. But the site's got to have some policy of tagging, and there's not really guaranteed to be a silver bullet.
So essentially if you think the current policy is bad, yes, I'd expect you to have a better alternative or at least some foundation for it to offer.

GcL
@nitsua60 I assumed that was the case, but I always cringe when "do you know a better way?" is included with or adjacent to a rebuttal.

Just trying to communicate openness =)
(And at least partially failing!)

@Rubiksmoose There's an old book, You Just Don't Understand Me, that (among other things) describes the facets of communication as including (a) what I intend, (b) what I say, (c) what I recall, (d) what you hear, (e) what you understand, and (f) what you recall. Given all those failure points, I'm always kinda amazed when communication succeeds.

GcL
@kviiri I disagree. You don't have to have a better way. If you see something you think bothers people, say something. You don't have to have a solution to point out when something is bad. I believe asserting that is counterproductive to discussion.

@GcL I would agree, in general. But there's a limit to that.

GcL
4:18 PM
@nitsua60 To me, you do seem very open to communication.

@GcL Thank you. That's, honestly, I think the best thing I can hear in this position.

Basically for every solution to every problem, there's always something to complain about. There is a fine line after which the complaints cease to be productive and become utopistic nitpicking. (Eg. if I invent a car that consumes 90% less fuel or other energy source, someone might complain about it still needing fuel, which would be really stupid unless they genuinely knew travel without consuming fuel was possible)

@kviiri (Uhh... duuuuhhh....)
(No need to click--even hovering gets you to the "joke".)

@nitsua60 I mean overuse of the Weave might have long-term environmental impacts we don't know about yet!

GcL
@kviiri My rejection of the practice is that I don't want to link the value of a complain with the value of proposed solution. Just because someone can't come up with a better solution does not mean their complaint isn't valid. Asking someone to provide a solution in conjunction with their observation of something not being right links the two.

4:26 PM
@GcL Again, I agree in general. But disagree in specifics.

GcL
@kviiri From my perspective, it is impossible to determine if someone requesting a solution proposal is doing so to invalidate or shutdown the complaint, or if it's one of the specific cases for them.

I personally think the complaint doesn't necessarily have to provide a better solution, but if it can't provide credible reason to believe there is a better solution, it's not likely to be a constructive complaint.
The Nirvana fallacy is relevant.

GcL
@kviiri I do not think I've ever seen anyone ask along the lines before of, "can you provide a reason to believe there is a better solution?". Imagining that being asked, I think my reaction would be the same.

@GcL I'm not really following. Are we still talking about tagging?

GcL
@kviiri I'm was talking about asking someone who makes a complaint for a solution in the statement or adjacent to a rebuttal. The subject of the complain, cakes, tagging, the color of the play button.

4:37 PM
Regarding tagging, I have a good reason to believe there is no better solution than what we currently have: the sheer fact that the question has been discussed, re-discussed and re-re-discussed in meta and in this chat by the most experienced users of this site and no silver bullet has emerged. (There may be subjectively better options, but nothing that'd clearly satisfy everyone without problems.)

GcL
@kviiri I think defaulting to assuming questions are about 5e is a saner default than the first contact with a poster poking them about adhering to our arcane tagging preferences.

@GcL Okay. What's your take on the meta then?

GcL
@kviiri I don't go there anymore.

@GcL There is a long, well-articulated defense of the current policy there.
Before continuing the discussion, it would be courteous of you to read it: rpg.meta.stackexchange.com/a/9809/11660 and see if your points are already addressed there.

GcL
@kviiri I'll take your word for that.

Q: Object Interaction in Combat

Fernando LuizCan I get the weapon of another friendly character (with his permission) during combat after he performed his action? I mean, in my turn. If possible, would it be object interaction?

Q: Would it harm game balance to allow the Haste action to be used to drink a potion?

Jorge CórdobaHaste specifies: [The target] gains an additional action on each of its turns. That action can be used only to take the Attack (one weapon attack only), Dash, Disengage, Hide, or Use an Object action. And it has already been stablished that "Use an object" is not valid to use a magic item w...

Maybe someday I'll stop despising every moment of saying "there are thousands of RPGs and we need to know which one you're talking about" when there are direct quotes and book names in a question...
Am I allowed to say this: "Policy dictates that we receive explicit confirmation from a question's poster about what edition or game they are playing. Without this knowledge we simply cannot answer the question. Please [edit] your question to indicate this or add the appropriate tag such as [insert-obvious-tag-here]"?
