That may be true, but also, someone else came along with an answer that relies on other printed material and comes to a different conclusion, and I'm inclined to agree with it.
I'm a fan of sane defaults. If the majority of questions that are missing a tag end up being 5e, probably just tag them that way instead of pestering the OP. The few cases where there is a different edition intended, but not specified are worth the sacrifice.
@NathanS personally, I don't worry about there being two camps. Personally, I think that "reverting" would be better. And I'm very happy if a community consensus develops in the other direction--I'm more interested in ensuring that the community considers issues I see (from the behind-the-scenes vantage an elected mod has) as important and comes to a workable conclusion that it can/will put into action than that they come to my conclusion on any given issue. @GcL Which is the only way we really have--though I'm all ears if you know of a better way! I know that only something like a few percent of site users goes there, but it's also one of the most-viewed and most-voted-upon metas ever....
@GcL Unfortunately, this isn't about dishes. With dishes, you can always get a good one if you pay for someone to get it for you. But the site's got to have some policy of tagging, and there's not really guaranteed to be a silver bullet.
So essentially if you think the current policy is bad, yes, I'd expect you to have a better alternative or at least some foundation for it to offer.
@Rubiksmoose There's an old book, You Just Don't Understand Me, that (among other things) describes the facets of communication as including (a) what I intend, (b) what I say, (c) what I recall, (d) what you hear, (e) what you understand, and (f) what you recall. Given all those failure points, I'm always kinda amazed when communication succeeds.
@kviiri I disagree. You don't have to have a better way. If you see something you think bothers people, say something. You don't have to have a solution to point out when something is bad. I believe asserting that is counterproductive to discussion.
Basically for every solution to every problem, there's always something to complain about. There is a fine line after which the complaints cease to be productive and become utopistic nitpicking. (Eg. if I invent a car that consumes 90% less fuel or other energy source, someone might complain about it still needing fuel, which would be really stupid unless they genuinely knew travel without consuming fuel was possible)
@kviiri My rejection of the practice is that I don't want to link the value of a complain with the value of proposed solution. Just because someone can't come up with a better solution does not mean their complaint isn't valid. Asking someone to provide a solution in conjunction with their observation of something not being right links the two.
@kviiri From my perspective, it is impossible to determine if someone requesting a solution proposal is doing so to invalidate or shutdown the complaint, or if it's one of the specific cases for them.
I personally think the complaint doesn't necessarily have to provide a better solution, but if it can't provide credible reason to believe there is a better solution, it's not likely to be a constructive complaint.
@kviiri I do not think I've ever seen anyone ask along the lines before of, "can you provide a reason to believe there is a better solution?". Imagining that being asked, I think my reaction would be the same.
@kviiri I'm was talking about asking someone who makes a complaint for a solution in the statement or adjacent to a rebuttal. The subject of the complain, cakes, tagging, the color of the play button.
Regarding tagging, I have a good reason to believe there is no better solution than what we currently have: the sheer fact that the question has been discussed, re-discussed and re-re-discussed in meta and in this chat by the most experienced users of this site and no silver bullet has emerged. (There may be subjectively better options, but nothing that'd clearly satisfy everyone without problems.)
@kviiri I think defaulting to assuming questions are about 5e is a saner default than the first contact with a poster poking them about adhering to our arcane tagging preferences.
