16:00
@Sathya TCS was going to be the judge at the competiton
doing some homework, ping me when you are done reviewing.
Tata Consultancy Services
what level is this for?
@Tanner read ?
@JourneymanGeek official retirement centre for folks who've been in IT for 8+ years
16:04
working on it
@Sathya wdf ? :p
@JourneymanGeek fwiw I did consider joining TCS couple years ago. then Logica came up with a better offer
@LittleChild: to quote Christopher walken
needs more cowbell
especially if this is going to be presented
@JourneymanGeek erm... ???
16:05
lol
@LittleChild: it really feels like a textbook-type work
@LittleChild share the doc & drop a link in Root Access
You're listing facts
@Sathya I did. Maybe you werent here :)
@JourneymanGeek it is supposed to be a research paper
not Head First CLoud Computing
I mean cmon!
prolly missed out
16:06
@LittleChild: well, everyone is writing like that I'd guess ;p
But more specific examples would be good
@JourneymanGeek whaaaaat ze foook
A technical definition is "a computing capability grammar there strikes me as a little off
example
you could give a scenaio where a cloud computing environment would work in DR
and a company that uses it
and how that's better than the traditional approach, or how it suppliments it
@JourneymanGeek AFAIK, I was supposed to give a brief overview. If selected, explain it to oldies from TCS
ok so -1 for the grammar , -1 for rote style of writing
what else ?
16:10
@LittleChild: well, its useful to understand why
EVERYONE will be rote writing
rate it out of 10. be brutal
Skimmed it, I'm not sure what your paper's trying to say - or is it just me?
maybe 2-3
;p
honestly though, I don't blame you
16:12
ok so it was bad
it was boring
so are all research papers
ugh, lets see If I have one of mine to tear apart
@Sathya I tried to keep it as coherent as possible
with focus on architecture and how enterprises can use it :/
Has anybody else noticed this with windows 7, with internet explorer it counts all the tabs as actual instances of the browser being opened
16:15
same with Chrome I guess. For every tab you open, there will be chrome.exe in Task manager
@Tanner done ? :/
@LittleChild Nah got a support call
No havent seen that in chrome or ff
just IE
@user88311: chrome does that too
@user88311 chrome does that too
16:16
Ok yes I know what you mean, in task manager, but with IE in the task bar it's actually showing as seperate windows
@user88311 yes IE does that.
I think FF has an option to enable that style
A pain if I do say so myself
@user88311 Office does that with separate documents, don't remember when it changed, I guess from 2003 to 2007, I didnt like it
@user88311 yes, get it. it shows multiple count for each tab
@Sathya if you are not busy, do U mind if I ask you a few questions about the mindset of the recruiters in IT companies in India ?
shoot
16:19
boom boom boom reload boom boom boom
fwiw I have a blog post I did rather recently about my experience as a tech interviewer
`Is cloud computing same as grid computing or cluster
computing?` Bonus points for the formatting there. Were you supposed to adhere to a standard or was it pretty much anything goes? I see you say it's a research paper but there's no citations. What level of education was this for?
1. Does favoritism come into play ? external influences ?
@Tanner: yeah, I was curious about that
@Tanner high school level I would say cause
in my country a Diploma equals High School Grad somehow :/
16:21
well, there's a set of references, but my lecturers would have me skinned if I didn't use in text citations
ahh
so judge it by that standard
@LittleChild What country?
then not too bad. Assumed uni level ;p
@Tanner: india
Ah
Wow.
@JourneymanGeek Vancouver style of referencing ?
16:21
@LittleChild generally no
@JourneymanGeek Exactly. I was surprised in the break of typical rules.
I know it is a strange notion but yeah thats how it rolls here
@LittleChild: harvard or chicargo
but its something they hit you with when you go to uni
I know...
Yeah. MLA formatting and whatnot... At least in the USA.
16:22
@Tanner: they also kept making us write essays in highschool
/took English 101 four times ^_^
@Tanner: I think the business side of my school SOMETIMES likes MLA
I mostly ran in to MLA and APA.
I just let word handle that ;p
Well, if it was APA I was failing the paper so... I actually never passed a research paper. =S
16:23
lol
I write at least one a term
and keep trying to teach people to cheat at referencing ;p
(use MS word + google books + don't read the whole book)
@Sathya well, mostly I see teachers recommending students even for campus interviews.
@JourneymanGeek rotfl
@LittleChild: well, obviously you need to make a good impression
brb
even tho my grades arn't great, I try to give an impression I know what I'm doing
@JourneymanGeek when was the last time you were here. you told me you are a PIO
16:24
@LittleChild That's how I got my job :P
last month, brother got married ;p
@JourneymanGeekcmy my grades need to get high but I know what I am talking
@JourneymanGeek I had a 2.0 (C) for my AA, and a 4.0 for my ATS...
@Tanner: been getting credits and passes
so GPA is just over 2 I think
@JourneymanGeek have you studied here ?
16:25
nope
cousins have
so.. you dont know the dynamics :/ I guess
Indian system is so.. grindy
@Tanner I believe in making my own success, no affiliations, no recommendations
also my folk are in tamil nadu, and they're bramin, so.. god it sucks.
@LittleChild Stop believing that now.
16:26
hates affirmative action when it helps no one
@Tanner please tell me why? :)
@Tanner: technically making good contacts is part of that
@LittleChild: In general, you are going to need to be a bit of a political animal IRL
unless you're EXTREMELY gifted.
@JourneymanGeek for whom was that intended?
It's all about affiliations and recommendations. Technical knowledge is easy. Getting someone to vouch for you is hard. At least in my experience...
5
hates affirmative action when it helps no one
16:27
I'd say make use of EVERY chance you got
@LittleChild: in general
Every thing I do, I aim to get at least one awesome reference out of someone there. So far it has served me very well.
I mean, if my dad was like 'friend of mine needs a computer guy'
I'd go for it
then learn the hell out of what there is to learn, and find a better job on my own
@JourneymanGeek that is not the picture I had in my head about recommendations
16:29
(pity that's not the case. In which case... ;p)
@LittleChild: worst case scenario ;p
oh those guys
My amount of shock was decreasing while reading the article :P
they make a pretty neat TFA product
oh wait ;p
They do like *here, I am recommending this person because [lot of positive points go here, lot of which are false] *
16:31
Mentioning TFA after I posted a Slashdot article is deeply confusing :D
@OliverSalzburg scary ! o0
lol
@LittleChild: and?
@JourneymanGeek and nobody really questions what is being said
added to that, I am an Introvert
I only blabber with you guys... not in real world :/ ironically
16:32
would you believe I was stuck at home for 2 years cause I couldn't deal being around people? ;p
I got better
Can't let introvertedness get in the way of, well, awesome.
@JourneymanGeek I can believe that, nothing far-fetched
solitude helps you get better
finding a reason to not be stuck at home got me better.
that and here
cause I ended up getting slightly more confident in my skills
being online not equals being out of home
16:34
@LittleChild The internet is part of the real world :P
I do go out -_- I enjoy in my own way
oh, I realised I was good at computers
went back to school
I mean, I need to get a social life again, but I do alright
@OliverSalzburg Nobody knows if I am a cat
Power of Introverts by Susan Cain
16:35
@JourneymanGeek why ?
@HackToHell: on one side, quota. On the other, pressure to perform
@LittleChild: well, its useful to be able to switch it on and off
@JourneymanGeek quota ?
@LittleChild You will at some point realize that you need to be social, I did and I have changed !
@LittleChild: yeah, for the 'backward classes'
lol
indian educational system is truly f'ed
16:37
@JourneymanGeek that non-sense made it to Britain, too ?
No offence, but if you're smart, it shouldn't matter. If you're poor, you should get a school place without lining someone's pocket
lol, talking about india
@HackToHell YOU DONT SAY ?
You have to mem and vomit shit to get marks :/
sucks
I mean, valluvar said (and this translates badly) No matter where you were born, and who you are, people will welcome the educated.
@HackToHell you are from India too ?
16:38
@HackToHell: trick is really, to use those skills intelligently ;p
ya from tamil nadu ;p
@JourneymanGeek like ? ;p
If you guys can memorise and vomit, AND think, its an advantage over people like me who need to use external memory ;p
@JourneymanGeek I am not against financial incentives for the poor and the backward, I am against quota
@LittleChild: PRECISELY
@LittleChild Of course it did, you insensitive clod!
16:40
I'm too, causes stupid SC corrupting every office
lol
Honestly, I don't blame them either
its the politicans making use of people that's the main issue to me
PRECISELY
India sucks cause of that :( :(
but indian politics is just...
laments about internet speed
16:41
lol
@HackToHell: my dad's finally given up on the reliance ;p
probably will be getting a grey market prepaid card next time we go to india
@JourneymanGeek Reliance telecom ?
"grey market"? :D
lol, reliance the biggest private scammers ;p
@LittleChild: yeah, we have a cdma dongle thats fairly legendary
@allquixotic: yeah, basically pick one up from a shop in singapore who probably got it off some indian worker ;p
sweet mother I think it's going to take me longer to get the psu out of my computer then it took the new one to get here
16:43
@JourneymanGeek Even BSNL is OK compared to them
@user88311 Weird case ?
@HackToHell: apparently airtel is what I need to go for
They have 4g in some cities
No, clibs on the cables refuse to move so I can't get them to release
clips*
16:43
lol
but it's really overpriced
use more force
that would be only on the mobo power and video card power
Trying, hold on
mobo power CAN be a pain
16:44
Use more force, user!
24 pin is driving me up the wall
@LittleChild: which part of india are you from?
Do not break your mobo man
@user88311 can I call you "88"?
16:45
(in case @aarthi turns up and we break into badly transliterated tamil again)
@LittleChild City of Awesomeness
I have a cousin there ;p
I wish I could tell what language my coworkers speak :(
it's either Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati or Hindi
I should probably find a excuse to visit at some point ;p
lol
@allquixotic: oh geeze. it could be the other 18 major languages
16:46
2 hands and I still can't get the 24 pin out
Tamil and malayalam sound similar to the untrained ear
@user88311 gently pull it out, rock it out
@JourneymanGeek is Malayalam spoken a lot in India too?
In a state alone
@allquixotic: probably as much as tamil
16:47
Wash going say, psuh, right
tamil just has the diaspora in its favour
push*
HIndi and English are the major languages here
I know that we have several Indians who can't speak to one another in any language but English, so at least some of them didn't grow up learning Hindi (the multi-cultural language, yea?)
lol
no
I don't speak hindi, nor do a lot of my cousins
16:48
I have learnt Hindi for 5 yrs, can't understand or speak it ;p
one can't read tamil, so we tease him ;p
Stll not working
Going to get gloves to wear, easier on hands
would I be able to learn Tamil through something like Rosetta Stone?
well, maybe ;p
I have no idea, I learnt it the old fashioned way
like 75% of my coworkers speak some unidentified language to one another so if I can learn that one it will help me at least understand what they are saying behind my back lol
I know the one lady from Gujarat and the one guy from Delhi have VERY different accents and mannerisms from the rest
so that pretty much rules out that the rest are speaking Gujarati or whatever's spoken prominently in Delhi
I guess I'll see if Rosetta Stone or something similar has Tamil and just start learning it and see if I can recognize it when they speak it
Bob
Bob
16:53
I'm good with foreign languages
Bob
Bob
English is hard enough to understand :P
If its delihi, chances are its hindi
I know a lot of Spanish, some French, some Japanese, some Russian
I know some french
16:54
@JourneymanGeek okay then nobody here speaks Hindi except the guy from Delhi :P that leaves a lot of options still, though
everybody always speaks to the guy from Delhi in English, yet they very regularly speak to everyone else in <unknown language>
how do they run national news in India O_O in English?
or in 18 separate languages >_>
2 Hands, gloves, knee on the tower, the tower is still moving but the cable isn't
@user88311 do you have a replacement for the cable?
Only the one on the new psu
17:00
@user88311 you could cut into the clip with scissors or a knife to try and force it open
yeah no
@user88311 does the cable that's stuck look like this?
pfffff vicegrip time
and yes
you do realize there's a clip on that plug that you have to push on to get it to release a lever so that you can pull it out, right?
17:04
never had one of those get stuck before
The main problem is holding it and pulling at same time I.E. why im getting vicegrips
pliers sound like they would work well
The main problem is holding it and pulling at same time I.E. why im getting vicegrips
And now that I have them, let's see if this works
@allquixotic National newspapers are in English while there are a lot of regional papers
got it
got to be kidding me
Just discovered the psu in my system is 20 pin with 4 pin aux
fits none the less
I'f i'd know this I could have saved a week and 20 bucks shipping
SHE LIVES!
or not
@Hennes just in time, new psu in, no inte volt in fan, starts up fine, you would think, but Normally I'd get a beep followed by the screen turning on, no beep, no screen
17:20
20+4 is the same as 24. I think I said that weeks ago
And I can't power off, and when turn power bar off then back on, starts up by self
Yeah I know
one sec. Not read much yet. Powered on the PC and went to feed the cat
But I thought the one in my system was just a 24 not 20+4, so yeah that ones on me
ah
My previous 24 pins connector was a 20+4 where I could 'break' the 4 from the 20 if needed
funny thing
This one is a 24 with a 4 aux
Exact same model though
None the less everything works fine, with the exception of no start up
17:28
The motherboard has a power_good line. * ponder *
I has a shopping question. :P
@Tanner OUT! :D
hahaha
@LittleChild campus placement is generally like random draw, if you ask me
Does a consumer grade voip solution exist? Trying to get a phone line over wifi for a fax machine =S
17:29
Fax? Like the ancient Egyptians used when they build the pyramids?
has power good yes
@Hennes Yes >_<
(So that's how they did it...)
the second gnd on the left side (side of the clip) there is none on both psu's
@Tanner I really have no clue but you'll probably want to look at Asterisk asterisk.org
1) Really no idea. Sorry.
2) Fax modem / faxing per email/software is how it is maintained these days
17:30
@Hennes
Even though I use VoIP at home, and I've set it all up, I don't have a clue...
It's like computering in general, you have a socket and a plug, if they match, it's probably right
Think I could fix that up in to a legit question or is that too much shopping?
Anybody got any ideas on this, new psu, plug it in, turn power bar on, start it up, everything clicks in fine, doesn't finish getting to boot and no screen, power button wont work, power bar off, wait 10 seconds, power bar on, system autos on
How can we measure is power good is triggered?
@Tanner Just don't ask it like a shopping question :P Ask "How do you get a fax line from A to B wirelessly?"
17:33
If it is not that would explain why the motherboard does not start
@OliverSalzburg Alrighty lol thanks
@Tanner And make sure to stay on-topic ;D
Hmmm... yeah
I'll write it and ping you :P
Voice and fax have different qualities though. I am not sure a solution meant for voice will work with the fax protocol. It might be lossy (like JPEG)
17:34
Ohhhh
So the fax part is going to be important. Crap...
Aye.
Incoming efax solutions
I do not say it is not going to work, but I do say pay attention to it
Gotcha
If all fails: Fax modem and a long serial line
17:36
@Hennes How to tell if power good is triggered
Or real fax -> computer -> serial line -> fax_modem. (kludge)
real fax -> computer can be replaced with 'scanner'
@user8831: Not sure , that is why I was reading specs
oh, k
Stuck a live disc in cd drive see uf it reads, seems to be, no audi or visual still
dvd drive*
if*
I hate this netbook
audio*
I guess that the PSU is supplying power. But the motherboard will wait until the PSU not only is providing power, but also until it guarantees that the power is good.
@user88311 You can edit your messages
But information on that is confusing
17:40
Yeah oliver I know, attempting to with the netbook and touch bad usually ends up worse
Left picture: 'PWK_OK' and 'Not connected'
Right picture: `Power_Good` and `-5 volts`
old one, power ok, new one, power good
I am going to leave you hanging for a bit while I make some food
Right I'll type during that
> I have a fax machine in a location that is accessible only through nearby WiFi. I'm in an unusual situation where it must be an ancient fax machine and not a nifty eFax solution (much to my chagrin.) Is there any way I can get an analog phone line over WiFi to this machine?
@OliverSalzburg Kind of short but... passable?
mmm
that last bit doesn't really work
17:46
@Hennes on the new one it has no connection next to PWR_GOOD unlike the diagram
Is there any way I can get a phone line over WiFi to this machine?

The last step in this solution would have to result in an analog phone line to the fax machine. This is where I'm stuck. Does a consumer grade solution for this problem exist?
screw you too markdown...
/vomits after tagging a question with
@Hennes Left the power bar off for a few mins, now it wont even power on
@Tanner A small paragraph a la "I have tried to get it to work using XYZ, but no dice!" is always nice ;P
Ah, thanks
How does one duplicate a tab in Firefox?
I see, Ctrl+Drag
Designing a multiple choice test about browse usage when the user can chose answers that apply to almost any browser is fun!
