12:00 AM
I got a mini light, layed it in the bottom of the tower and layed down next to it

lol
@user88311: the cpu power plug?
everyone has done that before.

please tell me you're not joking
SHE LIVES

3 hours ago, by Oliver Salzburg
@user88311 Also, if everything turns on, but you don't get an image on your screen, make sure you plugged in all of the power connectors for your graphics card ;D
Just sayin'!

Well thanks guys I'm about to have a eat your heart out moment with my computer
I was working till 2 in the morning, got up at 7
I have a actual excuse for not seeing this

lol
@user88311: I have done it (twice!) @sathya has done it.....

12:06 AM
Thanks Hennes, oliver, tanner, if any of you want to go post a "try plugging everything in on" superuser.com/questions/557850/… Free rep
just hit me up in chat when you do answer it

Well, congrats anyway :)
Great news and all that :D

answered ;p

There you go more rep
Now you wont hear from me till morning, or lunch, maybe

@JourneymanGeek Not everyone.
Some of use never had CPUs which used that much power.
Or a modern setup.
(read: some of us skipped tge P-4 CPU's)

improving my answer
lol

12:13 AM
though the tyan mptherboard with dual socket MP2200+ 's had a 4 pins connector.

@Hennes Hey if your setup gets worse ever, at least you know it's the psu you need to replace

Assuming it is the same problem (which I suspect it is)

@allquixotic Your question made the newsletter :D

Think later on I'll dissemble the old psu and see if there is any visible issues with it
See what it is that's actually causing the problem
Watch it's just something as solder on a connection has eroded over time
as simple as*
I do feel slightly stupid as it took me only what, 4-5 hours to figure out the gpu plug wasn't in
now the question, how do I get the old psu out of the machine

added lots of pictures ;p
wait, what? ;p
you probably should have gotten it out first ;p

12:19 AM
@user88311 Still... you can edit your messages, please make use of that feature. It's not fun trying to puzzle messages together :)
Just hit that Up Arrow

Sorry oliver, once I get off this netbook you wont have to worry
Oh

@Tanner No spaces should be in the name, or brackets

That, well, ok I'm going to bed once this psu is in

@user88311: I have a system that wouldn't boot cause of a bum keyboard

12:20 AM
Seen that before

I think it was....
oh wait
I think I have the exact same problem as @ivo , just worse ;p

But yeah the psu was sitting next to the machine on a plastic stand as I couldn't figur out how to get the psu out then, or now
no visible screws, just 1 spring

o0
its a standard PSU right?

yep
atx standard

tried googling for a service manual?
(not a user manual)

12:24 AM
Doing so as you said that

@OliverSalzburg Newsletter?

@allquixotic Server Fault newsletter

@SimonSheehan if your carrier or device manufacturer doesn't provide an official OTA update to the next Android version, I'd say you probably shouldn't attempt it

Every StackExchange site has a newsletter in case that wasn't clear :)

got it
Screw doubled as case screw for holding the top/right side of case on

12:28 AM
@OliverSalzburg OH.. I somehow stumbled upon subbing to the AU one but never knew they all had one

holy moly
they may be the same model but comparing these 2 psu's side by side, they are completely different
ah damn it
there is a screw in the side of the new one that the old one doesn't have that's keeping it from fitting in

Uhm, interesting.
/me mutters about standard formats and ways that manufacturere F- them up

Also new one, from UK, mine, canada/us
To be completely honest it looks out of place to but seems to be holding something in place

12:44 AM
dosen't matter. the screw holes are supposed to be standard

Yeah I took the screw out, wasn't holding anything infact, it only had 3 rivets, just enough to hold it in place, seems like somebody drilled customer holes into it to make it fit somewheres it shouldn't have

o0
(and this is why I will never ever buy a prebuilt desktop)

This is why I wanted to buy the psu new, the insides are different and has customer screw holes in it
And it's slightly louder but still not louder than a 1800 rpm processor fan
I'll just put more cash in my paypal and buy a new one when I can now that I know it was the problem I've got no problem using it for now until I get one that's new

Sweet mother I'm not ready yet I just got this desktop back online

12:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek Agreed on the desktop part.
For laptops and servers it is different though.
1U servers: Always pre-build.
2U servers or tower servers: I will build those myself
laptops: Sadly I will have to accept pre-build. :(

@OliverSalzburg do you speak German?

@allquixotic Yes

Hetzner's system tells the tech KEIN WUNSCHTERMIN!
what does this mean

@allquixotic In response to what?

@OliverSalzburg it's being sent by an autogenerated email system to the Hetzner tech to tell them about what I just ordered

12:56 AM
Or in what context

stupid intuition tells me it probably means something like "ASAP"

Well "Wunschtermin" is the desired appointment

kein = without?

So it either means you can't pick the date, or he doesn't like the date you picked :D

I didn't pick a date, there was a date picker thing

12:58 AM
@Hennes servers are a slightly different game.

so it just means I didn't pick a date

@allquixotic Was it disabled?

also I know very little about them for now ;p

@OliverSalzburg no, it was enabled, but you were only supposed to enter a value if you wanted it in the future
if you wanted it as soon as possible then you just don't pick anything

Because then it could mean, you simply can't pick a date, as they will pick it

1:00 AM
well... they will ultimately be picking a date, because I have no control over when the product is available

@allquixotic Oh. In that case it might simply mean "You didn't pick a desired date"
With such a short statement, context changes the whole meaning of everything :D

what I definitely didn't want to happen is for them to make the product available then let it sit in a warehouse for days waiting for it to be ready to hand over to me
so I assume now they'll find it available and install it as soon as they can
WHOA
it's already available O_O that was quick!
not used to fast service, my old server is in a DC that only works from like 9am - 5pm local time
this one is staffed 24/7

Holy cow... IE10 is sporting CSS gradients
The web looks like... it looks like the web
2

Woah, there's a CSS animation
Enough with this

1:11 AM
I figured out why the dent was in the psu and where it was for a reason
Due to the other screw that shouldn't be there, it gets jammed half way in and needs to be almost pried out
and now I'm stuck with a psu almost all the way in the machine

Any reccomendations

@user88311 Almost only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and PC building

thank you all

1:22 AM
None the less, anyideas on how to get it out

gentle persuation?

I can't shift it up, down, left, right, forward or back

use a drill
if that doesn't work, use a bigger drill

yet there are only 3 pieces of metal coming in contact with it in such a way there shouldn't be any presure
top, top right, and bottom left

it has to be stuck somewhere
just go with it
try to feel where its being stuck

1:24 AM
I'm about 50 attempts away from taking the case off th tower
that's just the thing
Let me post a pic of mymachine
well not mine, but another from the same angle

@JourneymanGeek there are 1800 registered dialects of various languages. 18 languages that are recognized as major languages in the country

suddenly searching acer am1100-e1401b on google renders me reed cabbage, interesting
but none the less, there is no wiggle room

@user88311 custom building a computer ?

No, attempting to replace the psu
with one off ebay, that had 2 custom holes in it with 2 small screws to fill the holes
which inturn, jammed the psu about half a inch from fitting into place

Why is it so hard to get the psu out ? it should be fairly straightforward

1:31 AM
wrong picture

Is @Tanner around?

That's it

Acer Aspire?

No it's putting the new one in
the old one came out with a simple pull
New one because of a screw I missed under a label, is jammed half a inch from where it should be\

Can you use a bigger hammer?
Oh wait, that is the DevOps solution.

1:34 AM
Hennes, really now
found the problem
the 2 bubble pieces of the sheet metal that normally allow for the psu to sit snugly but not stuck, are instead of beside it, below it
meaning I'm going to be another hour if I don't want to damage the tower
The solution, just took the enitre case off

1:55 AM
@user88311 is it ok to spray WD40 ?

If I was working on a car, or you, yes

Aye. In other place WD 40 is slow acting glue
Read: It works. The it gathers dust and dirt and ages. And next you know its workings have reversed

I know

@FasihKhatib I was trying not to scare @allquixotic too much. 22 major languages, I think, I just removed the 2-3 he thought might be it ;p

I wouldn't use a flamable substance any where's near a computer anyways

2:05 AM
@Hennes: hammer's not devops. Hammer is oldskool engineer.

ok, how abot VisualHammer?

jsHammer
;p

Q: Regarding some doubts about the storage of power

ArunAm looking forward to get a clear answer. I don't know whether it is practical or not. Let's come to the point! I Am thinking about a project to develop electricity using our public transportation service. (only considering the factors in India ) We are going to face the shortage of electricit...

@Luke kind of. Stuck on my phone tonight.

@Tanner I just left work... What was the issue with my solution? YOu said there was something else?

2:18 AM
Only the UNC path resolution. The printer name is default so it won't resolve right. Will have to change it in the morning.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again SHE LIVES after I took a pair of vice grips and used them to straighten out the dent in the psu and remove the custom screws

BRB

Interesting usage of 'She'.
I tend to use 'He' for servers and 'she' for desktops. No idea why

2:33 AM
Usually I use it, but I'm in a bit more of a good mood so I used she
But I always use it for consoles I repair
None the less my room is a hardware disaster area, so going to do a ton of updates and clean while I do that

@JourneymanGeek now I'm scared :(

Well we have one good thing to know at least @Hennes if your psu quits, it will be hell of lot easier to find one you want, but not cheaper most likely

If it quits I will take my computer to the computer club. Test it with another PSU. Then look around for a new one. I guess I could buy it locally within 30 minutes, but I tend to research hardware which goes into my computers before I buy it

.
Understandable
Which is why I went for a exact same part, as I knew what it was and the specs, assuming you do the same

3:00 AM
@Hennes what was ta=hat command for the beep after dd finishes
that*

echo ^G
or any trick to echo ASCII code 7
usually I do that with Control-V control-G

thank you
I must say it's so nice to be able to just sit back and lookat my computer screen an

not worry about it crashing

Q: how to translate this ms spreadsheet formula in pseudo code?

sasorii have this excel spread sheet formula in the column cell of the document, can someone explain or translate this in pseudo code ? '-PMT(B4/12,B5,B3) and what does that '-PMT means ?

@IvoFlipse: my desktop will not even boot up with that keyboard plugged in

@JourneymanGeek Oh I updated the keyboard's firmware
I think I got a message from that somewhere

@IvoFlipse: different keyboard ;p
my bad
my old logitech is failing wierdly

Yeah, but got a firmware update from the Razer one
Deleting :P

7:43 AM
@Sathya doesn't that first quote mean it's a string? :S

@Bob yep

Bob
8:04 AM
@Sathya then..ok, NARQ it is :P
unless the 'pseudocode' he wants is print <string> or something.. :S
oh god
We have a site that is not yet fully IE10 compatible and are blocking IE10 users. In the meantime, we have to support IE9 behavior, but if we're on Win8, we'll have to set compatibility mode every time. — GaTechThomas Nov 7 '12 at 20:27
...haven't we passed the stage of 'this site is so dependent on IE quirks that it breaks everywhere else, even newer IE versions'?
he's got bigger problems than IE10 compatibility... like, say, FF/GC/O/S compatibility.
also..
We're blocking users by detecting their browser and deciding whether to let them login or tell them that their browser is unsupported. — GaTechThomas Nov 7 '12 at 20:33

..why the heck do I have a WMC update scheduled to wake my computer at 12:28 am every day? :S

11:33 AM
@Sathya It also fixed the Ctrl+V bug \o/
Which was, you had to Ctrl+V twice to paste something in the image upload box

ah

Man, paste from clipboard is intense. We need that on chat! :D
Ahahaha

@OliverSalzburg: evil ;p
wouldn't that count as the OP asking for the answer to be deleted? ;p
(should I flag it?)

@JourneymanGeek Meh, I removed that bit

Am I allowed to ask for hardware suggestions here in the chat?

yes ;p

Well, I'm sort of a hobbyist electronics guy, so I was looking for something where I could install OpenWRT and use some GPIO ports as well.
Then I found the WRT 54G
But it seems kinda old, so I'm not sure.
Ehh, a router is what I'm looking for. :P
With wireless access of course.

Q: What is the point of FireFTP?

ValI wanted to download a directory. It is possible only in file-by-file manner in Web browsers. Yet, Firefox allows for extensions. I installed the FireFTP plugin, open the ftp:// url and web browser component opens it again. FireFTP was not called to handle the ftp:// protocol. What is the point o...

the what?

Very relevant to superuser for sure. :P

@William'MindWorX'Mariager: there's always the raspberry po
*pi
I don't remember if the WRTs have GPIO pins
its a great router tho

12:13 PM
Well, WRT54G supposedly does from the OpenWRT wiki.

also, try to get a GL
more space on it

Bob
you might want to find something more modern
the WRT54s were good, but they might not cope too well with higher workloads...
@OliverSalzburg ʜᴏᴡ ᴀʙᴏᴜᴛ sᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘs?

@Bob Those are fine :D
Brilliant title :P

12:34 PM
@Bob Well, currently it's 2 Desktops, 3-6 laptops and a NAS server. It seems too much for my current router which will just randomly shutdown at times.

Bob
@William'MindWorX'Mariager also depends on how many connections you open

Here's a quick one, when setting up multiple APs (same SSID) for the same LAN, do you want them to be on the same channel or on another channel?

@Bob: up to 5 desktops, 3 phones, including torrent, and mine holds up fine ;p

Bob
my old router would crash when opening/closing torrenting applications, refreshing game server lists and even opening reddit/subreddit pages... the sheer number of connections at one time killed it :P

@OliverSalzburg: there's a question on that on SU ;p

Bob
12:35 PM
but it was worse than a WRT54G, so.. bleh.

@Bob: stock firmware?

@JourneymanGeek Awesome!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek no choice - unsupported

Well, this one seems to crap out when it has to handle too many devices. The more people connected the worse it gets.

12:36 PM
@Bob: yeah, I'm actually annoyed my old WRT54GL is that reliable cause I was looking for an excuse to replace it

Look who answered it... :D

@OliverSalzburg: gee, how else do you think I remember it ;p

:D
I had it upvoted already. That's a bit concerning

Bob
@William'MindWorX'Mariager What's your price range?

oh, thats not the one I was thinking of too ;p

Bob
12:37 PM
@OliverSalzburg holy mother of -

@Bob Not really an issue. Don't feel like dealing with problems. Needs to be a home solution though. I'm not interested in setting up my own Rack servers. :P

Bob
eh. I picked up a TP-LINK router for ~$100
works perfectly. spec wise, it's pretty nice
but dd-wrt's support for atheros chipsets is... imperfect

I got a WNDR3700v1 with DD-WRT. It's my favorite :P

Bob
also, see if you need higher speed wifi (802.11n), gigabit ethernet, etc
I don't think the WRT54GL had those

Well, gigabit would be nice. Desktop, Mediacenter and NAS all support it.

12:41 PM
The WRT54GL did not provide 100Mbit throughput on the WAN side :(

@OliverSalzburg Looks pretty good and well within my pricerange.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg only the WNDR3700v3/4s were available when I was looking :(
and apparently those two only moved into 'supported' as of 20130222
damn. should've waited another month

@Bob I got mine on Amazon back then

I have no idea which version I'm looking at.
Ohh, it has a USB port. Interesting.

I always try to keep a spare WRT54GL around. And the one I have right now, will be used up next week already
I only had this spare for like 2 months
They are simply extremely versatile
I only got the WNDR for high-speed internet

Bob
12:45 PM
@William'MindWorX'Mariager see if you can find specs on the memory

And it also runs DD-WRT, you just get more options than you're used to from the WRT54

Bob
v1 was 64 RAM, 8 flash
v2 had 16 flash
v3 is 64/8, but with broadcom instead of atheros

64 MB RAM, 8 MB Flash.

Bob
v4 went back to atheros with 128/128
@William'MindWorX'Mariager so either v1 or v3
see if you can find the clock rate of the CPU

12:48 PM
Is it printed on the device? I could ask the seller.
0 - 1.9 Ghz
680 MHz
Whatever that means.

Bob
v1 was an Atheros clocked at 680 MHz, v3 a Broadcom at 480 MHz
ok, that's a v1

the version is generally printed with the serial number

Bob
(probably)
@JourneymanGeek yea, if you're asking the seller, just ask for the version number

12:49 PM
Weee :D

Bob
but the ram/cpu specs tend to be more readily available than the version number on product pages on Amazon/Ebay
which is weird

oh right for a moment I thought that was a windows system properties screen ;p

Bob
lol

So, v1 is the version I want? Or should I look for a different one?

12:51 PM
@William'MindWorX'Mariager I just know that I recommended the WNDR3700 to a co-worker once, he got a couple v2. DD-WRT would not work on those
To my understanding DD-WRT now runs on the v2

Bob
@William'MindWorX'Mariager if you want the same as @OliverSalzburg, then yes

But I've never seen it

Bob
@OliverSalzburg as of early 2011

I'll just go with the v1 since @Oliver recommends and it is known to work.

I really wish they'd have a IPV6 tunnel broker on ddwrt as a varient
<random>

Bob
12:53 PM
cool, I can view the current NAT table
@JourneymanGeek you mean use dd-wrt as a tunnel broker?
or connect to one?

connect to one

Bob
well, if you don't mind the ocmmand line: dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/…

for example, have my router connect to HE, and give out IPV6 address instead of IPV4

I've set up IPv4->v6 tunnel on my DD-WRT

(or both!)

12:55 PM
Was quite a pain (and useless)

hmm
@OliverSalzburg: used to have freenet on some systems

@Bob I followed that guide actually
Back when I did the HE IPv6 test
Which you should all do. As it's awesome
Sadly, I never gut any IPv6 Glue >:(
So I never got my IPv6 shirt :(

Bob
I spent three hours a couple of days ago getting Teredo working
it was painful
then I reverted it :P

The HE tunnel was a joke. It works but that's it

Bob
yep. slow, I guess?

12:58 PM
You sit there with your 100Mbit line connecting through a tiny pinhole of internet

@OliverSalzburg Huh... what is the HE test?

It's laughable, really :P

Bob
@OliverSalzburg 100Mbit line? What 100Mbit line?
:(
For me, it's more from a tiny pinhole through a very very long pipe to another tinier pinhole XD

@Paul ipv6.he.net/certification Highly recommended! Lots of fun!
@Bob :D

Bob
hm.. my VPS has 16 IPv6 addresses last I checked..
I wonder if I can do some IPv4 to IPv6 through OpenVPN
