6:02 PM
@OliverSalzburg Why do you need such test?

@RudáAlmeida It's for a training session for a client
"We want to train our personnel in using teh webs!" "Okay, which browser do you use at your company?" "Firefox, IE and Chrome!"

Morning all

I already have my favorite answer picked, would love to put it under every question "None of the listed options applies"

@OliverSalzburg The goal of every browser is to just let the user browse. Click on links, bookmark stuff, display a site. If one's not a webdev, why worry with which browser the user is using?

@RudáAlmeida We're talking about explaining to people which part of the UI to put the address into

6:06 PM
Oh....

@OliverSalzburg This kind of user doesn't need training materials. They need a teacher who literally grabs their hand, puts on the mouse and drags the hand and the mouse thru the right actions.
Also, Chrome and Firefox address bar behaves as a search bar also, so it makes no difference where you paste the address, or perform a search.
A huge poster stating "DON'T PASTE ADDRESSES ON GOOGLE" should sufice

@RudáAlmeida The sessions does not focus exclusively on the address bar

@OliverSalzburg OK, I'll shutup, I actually know nothing about your specific scenario and I'm acting as if I kew better. My bad... :-x

And there's different levels of knowledge among the employees. Some of them have desk jobs and will laugh at the material. Others don't even own a computer. The goal is to raise the bar only so slightly above freezing level ;D
@RudáAlmeida I'm not in charge of deciding what makes sense and what doesn't ;D

@OliverSalzburg Although in my personal, debatable opinioin, printed training material is of substantially less help than actual live training sessions. Specially when training on interacting with a UI

6:12 PM
@RudáAlmeida Oh there's live sessions
This is just a follow-up test to finish it all up

While hennes makes lunch, anybody else got any ideas on the whole psu issue

@user88311 I don't. I'd probably break it

@OliverSalzburg Oh, I see. And I suppose you didn't write the test, you have to evaluate it, but can't change it in any way?

@RudáAlmeida Oh no, I'm supposed to design the test based on the goals set for the training sessions
I have a sheet stating "During this part, the user is supposed to learn Ctrl+Alt+Del", then I go to my test and write a question like "What's the first step to logging on to your computer?"
It's all very exciting work :P

Lunch? I am about to peel potatoes for dinner.

6:22 PM
@Hennes I need food to, I'll be back in 20 mins-half a hour

I already got some meat, some rocket (salad) and some beer.

Ah woops, time zones forgot
2PM here, late lunch but BBQ sounds good

I stayed up late. Got up at 9, got nauseous, want back to bed and got up at 5 PM.

I'll be back in a bit

I am making breakfast/lunch and dinner.

3 votes to migrate to webapps... superuser.com/questions/557733/…

@Tanner, Jacob's server that he sold me apparently came with a switch that said "I only support half-duplex 100 Mbps! :D"
took us several days to figure out the problem and get them to fix it
the colo provider's fault

hahah wow... that's an oops

@Luke Yeesh. Let's scare that one off...

I don't vote lightly on answers, but I downvoted that one
I usually only vote on questions, to get that one gold badge :D

zomg you has no gold either!

I got gold :D

I've been downvoting lots of crap lately... Rep is suffering :(
By lots though, I mean about 10

7:12 PM
you should get a gold badge for spending 1000 rep downvoting crap

\well that was good @hennes hows your food going

Hmmm... Post is gone, my -1 rep is still there...

@allquixotic It's free if the answer is deleted

Wow. @Luke @allquixotic Both of you guys have downvoted twice as much as me.
And I thought I was mean xD

@Tanner I hate crap

effit I'm leaving now :P

Damn

@Hennes I like how you dine, plate in front of keyboard :D

You missed the beer next to it. As well as the cat which seemed interested

7:43 PM
Right. Finished dinner.

7:56 PM
@Hennes You're evil... I don't take my lunch for another 2 hours!

I shift the blame to people asking me about dinner. ;-)

Right well I finsihed about a hour or so ago now
Anyways any ideas on the psu issue now
@Hennes

Not really. Usually I would move it to another PC and test it there.
But if I recall correctly you only had one PC and a netbook.
/me ponders.

Have another pc, but don't think the psu will work

Wrong power levels ?

8:03 PM
the pc is from eaither late 1990's or early 2000
so most likely

hmm, AMD athlon time

I have 2 in that condition actually, both just sitting in another room in case of dire circumstances

Drat. If I had known that. Their PSU probably are 200-ish Watt, 20 pins

Checked
Pretty sure they weren't

more powerful ?

8:05 PM
I mean 256MB ram 1.7ghz 40 and 80 gig HDD
the psu wont be any better

But if it boots (with the currently installed hardware) then you can test that the new PSU is working fine

I might try, just need to grab one of the towers and few cables

First test if it boots with the old hardware

Well at least we deduced it was indeed the psu
Yeah hold on, other room is more of a store room
holy crap
Old pc is twice the size of mine and 3 times the weight
Just need to grab the monitor cable
115volt in it, yeah ok let's see if right pins
My, long time since I saw ribbon cables

8:25 PM
40 pins, 80 pins or 50 pins ?

20
that one is not a option
and the other one is the same

Ponder. What uses 20 pin ribbon cables? FDD is 34, IDE 40, SCSI 50 or 68, ADMUX IDE 80, ...
Two rows of 20 ?

Oh not
no*
the psu in the old machine is 20 pin
the ribbon cables I didn't check
Just stated the machine had ribbon cables in it
I'm hitting up the front page see if anybody has any ideas
any ideas in the mean time on the problem, I figured Id' just start it up let it run for a while, 20 mins now and still just fan running, hard drive running, no screen or audio

I am stuck at the idea that the motherboard does not get the signal to start.
Which means double checking the power connector and the cables
But I assume you already did that

indeed
I'm about to plug the old psu in just to see if it comes to the same issue or the old one
Here's the question if any of you have any good ideas or know anybody with a few

Q: New PSU New Issue, Fan, Hard drive, Disc Drive Start, Nothing Else

user88311I've been in the chat for the past while and found nothing so I figured I'd come to the front page. For about 6-8 months I've had issues with my computer not starting when it was cold and even then when I plugged to many USB devices or a ethernet cable, it crashed, we eventually deduced the Powe...

@Tanner I saw your answer on that add blocker question

8:51 PM
xD
the mommy looking to block teh pr0ns?

Try be less of a dick, had to flag it just for that, I know it was rather weak for super user but still

Wasn't being mean. I was being dead serious.
You can't rely on any sort of blocker to babysit your kids on the Internet. That's insanity.

True

I made such a nice CSS addition to the site today

Q: Can we have additional padding on nested lists?

Oliver SalzburgThe padding in nested lists when using blank lines for spacing has always driven me crazy. I understand that this is because the contents of the list item are simply wrapped in <p> and that's why it has to look like this: One Nest Two Nester Three Nestest Even though the Markd...

We need it merged into the site \o/

9:12 PM
Also, improvements on the selector are very welcome!
As it also applies to GFM

What you know, a 1 rep account with a copy/pasted answer on my question, wonder what will happen if I put a bounty on it
plugged the old psu in, same issue as it always had, at least the monitor almost turns on with it

@user88311 What is your problem anyway?
I understand a PSU is part of it, correct?

From what me and hennes have discerned over the past month or so, it's the main problem
Feel free to read about the new psu, I'll type about the old one

A: New PSU New Issue, Fan, Hard drive, Disc Drive Start, Nothing Else

DevinConsidering your power supply is brand new, the problem is most likely with your motherboard. The way to test this is to remove all addon cards, hard drives, peripherals etc and try and boot your computer with just a CPU, ram and graphics card (if you don't have built in video on your motherboard...

Actually I'm to tired to right now give me 10 mins I need to get something to drink

Sure thing
@user88311 I'm by no means a hardware guy, but if you replaced the PSU and the problem remains, it's probably the component the PSU connects to - the mainboard.
Or, let's say, it's the next think I would check
@user88311 Also, if everything turns on, but you don't get an image on your screen, make sure you plugged in all of the power connectors for your graphics card ;D

9:41 PM
ok bacj
back*
Ok me and Hennes have the same issue so I figured I'd do the testing, when our PSUs are cold the computer wont start, just tries, if we warm them up such as cranking the heat or using a hair drier to blow into the side vent for a min
, they start up, with the exception of if you plug in to many USB devices it crashes and if plug anything into the ethernet port it crashes (just mine) and the problem gradually got worse, so we deduced the psu was on its way out
, since the USB ports draw about 1/6 of the power the ethernet adapter uses, we deduced the psu may not be able to put out enough watts for the system to run correctly, that and or there is a bad connection in the psu causing part of the problem (the whole warm/cold bit) @OliverSalzburg

Now with the newer psu off ebay, those issues seem to be gone, as I can plug all usb devices, ethernet cable, etc in and seems to start up, no fan seemingly dieing and starting up again non stop eithrt

So, does this behavior in regards to temperature remain with the new PSU?

either*
no it doesn't

Oh, I see

9:53 PM
Which is why I know it's not a issue with the system
Now everything but the audio and screen seem to work

Could just as well be multiple problems and replacing the PSU was just step 1

check out my system, it's all onboard, psu was only thing I could replace aside from the gpu and ram
I can't even test this psu in another system because it's a 24+4 apparently, not a 20+4 as it should be
@Hennes still there

Just back.
Playing shogun-2 and occasionally checking the tabs in FF

Great, made some updates, feel free to put a bit of input in

lol I must have pissed somebody off today. my top two answers were downvoted.

@Tanner hahahaha... Ramhound?

Nah he downvoted those a long time ago :P
(At least my top answer I know he did ^__^)

@Tanner Have some rep :P

ohhh ty =D
In my mysterious downvoter's defense, I have been rather snarky lately.

10:40 PM
Hey tanner
go review your comment on my question I posted, the question was updated
on my question I posted, that was a bit redundent
@Tanner
@Hennes I don't remember if I mentioned this earlier, it's been a long day but in the diagram you posted, i.sstatic.net/5qpgb.png,on the 24 pin where it's pwr good and 5v, it's no connection instead of 5v on mine

I do remember. I even commented on the difference

Alright, just making sure I mentioned it
I'm going to prep supper, I'll be back later

Anyone know anything about safely updating my android powered phone? I want Android 4.1.2, currently on 4.0.4 or something... Its an international Galaxy S2. GT-i9100

Drop by the cyan mod forums, best place for android help

thanks

10:52 PM
Not trying to push you out of chat (I'm sure there's people that frequent RA who would be interested and helpful) but I think there's an android stack exchange around here somewhere

@Tanner Oh I'm fully aware - its just not a very active chat, and I'm sure users here have android phones

I'm talking to you on one now actually. :) @allquixotic might know something

Maybe some. I have a 3 year old winCD phone and I wish it was a nokia-1100 (or similar 'just dial without problems and have proper reception everywhere` phone instead.

I forget sometimes you can even talk on these things
I mostly watch Netflix on mine
Grawr one of my pet peeves is when people decide they have to check their email when I'm working on their PC remotely. I just walked away this time... wonder if they've figured it out

I am a bit disappointed with my answer here: superuser.com/a/557846/89018

11:00 PM
Windows 7-8 phones, such a problem it's not funny

It is one of those things I can visualise easily, but find difficult to explain succinctly
Without starting from scratch
Does anyone have any suggestions how I can clarify?

Have at it we can discern whatever it is
Well the rest can I'm going back to making supper

@Paul Not really. Well, unless you start a 4 page answer....
In the beginning, G-d created the datagram, and behold, there was ...

@Hennes Heh, yeah exactly

omg she's still just working...

11:04 PM
Ok, maybe a bit less than that. :)

@Paul I camped that question waiting for an answer. I thought I knew what was going on but wasn't sure. I thought you nailed it. Upvoted your answer within 10 seconds.

@Tanner Yes, I mean, the answer is correct, I just don't think it is that useful to someone who would ask that type of question.
Other than saying "Go and read and understand ISO network layers" I am not sure if there is a clearer way to say it :)

Maybe a diagram of your typical home network + NAT setup vs. what's going on there?

Shudders at Onboard Graphics Card with External GPU
So many close terms
Onboard == on_CPU.
External GPU means internal used GPU on a PCIe card.

@Hennes Where was that written?!

Q: Onboard Graphics Card with External GPU

Benjamin Kevin HardingI have a AMD Radeon 7750 GPU. I recently upgraded my motherboard and CPU. The new motherboard has an AMD Radeon 3000 on it. I am not sure whether the AMD 7750 card it taking priority over the AMD 3000, but when I play games on my computer now I seem to have a lot less FPS than I did before I up...

Wait, that is the edited version

@Hennes Aaah, but I get it now

Thinking about putting a bounty on this...

Q: How can I share a printer on Windows 7 x64 with Windows XP x86?

TannerI'm trying to share a printer that's on Windows 7 64-bit with Windows XP 32-bit. When I try to add the printer on the XP machine, it contacts the Windows 7 machine for drivers, fails to find suitable drivers, then asks if I want to add drivers manually. When I attempt to add the Windows XP 32-bi...

How much should I throw down?
Kind of thinking 200. It's bugging the hell out of me.

@Tanner Seems reasonable
@Tanner Though the real answer is to get a network printer and chuck that one away :)

/looks at cable making kit It, um, it's a network printer... I just don't want to drive over there, make a cable, and have them pester me for two hours with silly questions about whether or not they should update Java (because a dialog came up for it and they just left it up all week because they weren't sure what to do @_@)
That and it's just bugging me. I could fix it. Or even ignore it. But... grawr why doesn't that work?

@Tanner Well... will they treat you like a hero after you fixed it?

11:26 PM
@OliverSalzburg This is the most important point

Pfffft no.
It's my fault for upgrading their eight year old computers in the first place. :P

@Tanner In that case, send everyone a memo about going paperless. Send it on paper for maximum irony.

My experience with solving the printer problem is:
1) install the manufacturers drivers. Ignore the new printer.
2) manually add a new printer entry on the print server.
3) Add extra drivers to that one.
4) Test, if it works go to step 5.
5) discard the printer from step 1
and use a g-d damn sensible name. Location-print-01-PCL5 should not be PS or PCL6
Last is a rant to some other people. Grah!

haha
The threat of going paperless would cause mass panic. I think the place might burn down...
Bah I'm going to bounty it because it will haunt me forever if I don't get an answer.

11:29 PM
I used to have access to the intranet pages. Add a 'how to install a printer'.
Click on the location (open link to `\\locationsPrintserver`)
Click on printer.
---Profit--- Done!
Hmm, no strike-out ?

@Hennes Yeah, weird
I was just about to ask how you escaped it :D
This is a test!

test test3

Then spent a lot of time explaning that 'I need to print this and than ship it to the other location could be implemented as 'phone. Ask which orinter is next them. Add printer. print'

markdown sucks

Well, it's magic!
---No it's not---

11:32 PM
I think strikedown works on single line entries. test
Now trying two line.
---test2---

Aaaah

Check. It only works with one line at a time

I
---see---

undocumented feature

11:33 PM
Nice!

I seemed to have erred though. The Radeon 3000 is not a on CPU die one. It is a very old one.

Can you ping people from other chats if they've only been in the other chat? I want to pull some help from the Comms Room but don't want to embarrass myself there. :P
Oh screw you Clippy.

@Tanner If they have ever been in this room, you can ping them
As far as I remember

The H-bar just did a @ tanner: test chat room ping

Ah, nothin'

11:48 PM
@Tanner Answered your question

Yeah reading it now. Thanks.
@Luke Network path was not found. >_<
Although the network path did happen to be \\ETC-TERI\HP LaserJet P4014/P4015 PCL6 (Copy 1)
it probably didn't like that =D
I'll hop on the other PC when nobody is around and change it...

@Tanner @Hennes I feel like a idiot, I thought it was a 24+4, didn't notice the other 4 pin connecting to the board on the other side of the gpu
Let's see what happens

hahaha

it's positioned right below the psu so from the slightly upwards angle I was looking at it from I couldn't see it
