The worst problem here (ignoring even the last 3 questions by the same user) seems to be that people just are filling the site with about any questions without checking for dupes (done this myself, by accident) and basically ignoring whether the question fits on our site.
But it's nice someone set a feed up here in the chat room so we surely won't miss these...
Microsoft states your computer will need the following specifications. Do note that Metro apps won't work on a screen resolution below 1,024x768 pixels.
Windows 8 Release Preview works great on the same hardware that powers Windows 7:
Processor: 1GHz or faster.
RAM: 1GB (32-bit) or 2GB (64-bi...
Windows 8 still supports the command line feature to shut it down. You can just press the Win+R button to open the run dialog box and type the command
shutdown /s /f /t 0
/s for shut it down
/f for forcefully close any application and shut it down immediately
/t for time...
I absolutely knew that offering huge prizes would cause people to spam the site with low quality questions (and answers, and votes). I'm not surprised in the slightest. It kind of discourages me from even..... trying to participate.
Oh something else if anyone can weigh in... logging out of xwindows in openSUSE 11.3 or 12.1 resulted in a screen full of character gibberish on two machines (no readable text)
building a ROM is hard, especially if you're new at it. there are various "guides" but chances are you're going to hit a few road bumps which you'll have to work out on your own
@allquixotic Its a direct login and starting an xsession. We have multiple desktops which are exactly identical in hardware and only these two machines give us this gibberish.
@allquixotic or is it "starting xorg..."? I really don't know much about this stuff if that isn't obvious :-\
There's a nifty new tab in the 'Task Manager' called 'Starup' where I can manage the program that run at startup.
BUT... It doesn't show all of the application that run at startup:
Some of the hidden culprits are:
Steam
Skype
Google Drive
Dropbox
Cisco VPN
Java Update
"What about the re...
@LordStryker KDE comes with a desktop manager called kdm which automatically manages login sessions and Xorg instances; if you aren't using it (it sounds like you aren't from having to run startx) you should use it
@allquixotic There are apparently a LOT of things we should be doing... anyone want to volunteer to come in here and give a good lecture to the boss about it? :P
@LordStryker sure; or even hire me :P I once got a company drooling to hire me by talking with them on the phone for 2 hours and showing them what I could do over ssh
you'd be hard-pressed to pay me less than what I'm making now... unless you're in a third-world country
up to date is less important than doing things the right way... it sounds like you've got an environment that is fairly suboptimal even for the existing technology platform
@LordStryker doesn't mean no other FS can be up and stable for that long. also, how many of those FS errors have existed for those 600 some odd days and caused random errors and silent data corruption in programs?
@LordStryker XFS is pretty darn solid and regularly deals with data much larger than it sounds like you're using (single hard drive, right) -- XFS works with volumes in petabytes in production systems
@Sathya: stoned is fun. There's NOTHING like waking up one morning to find there's a hippo under your bed you hit the rep limit and you don't remember answering any of those questions.
welding? check. lockpicking? check. hacking into electronically-locked doors, optical readers, badge readers, etc? check. flashlight? check. camera? check. x-ray? check. infrared? check. tazer? check. now that's a cool phone!
someone oughta make a game like that where you go around in a 2040s town with your multitool as your only weapon, and you upgrade it over time to do more things
I'm running the Windows 8 Developer Preview, and I would like to make IE10's DEFAULT browser mode to be Internet Explorer 9. I can change it with F12, but it always goes back to IE10 browser mode when I restart the browser. Is there any way to make IE10 start up running with Internet Explorer 9 b...

Unfortunately there is no way yet for this. You have to live with curse of MS. I think they don't want to let the user easily launch their favorite browser's with this limitations.
While there are many lack of feature in IE-10 and one of the big are that the modern UI/Metro version of IE-10 do...
And I answered the OP :P
@r.tanner.f I don't know about other's but its my turn for sure, @Sathya mercy ;)
@r.tanner.f btw, I've left my external hard disk at home in Bangalore, and won't be having access to it till next week. So no playing with VMs for now -.-
that means you can go ahead and mention the mounting-ISO-from-Windows-works answer
@Sathya Haha yeah that overly complicated answer actually rep capped me xD (for the first time) I already changed it. Funny thing, not getting as much rep from it anymore, lol.
Mount and run the installer!
If you mount the iso as a virtual drive, all you have to do is run the installer! I had mistakenly thought that using WAIK was necessary, but Sathya pointed out that the installation can be run after simply mounting the iso. The rest of the installation files will be...
Wasn't worried about you answering, just don't like linking something I'm in the middle of working on.
I am having a slight problem with the internet on my PC.
I have a Dell Precision 670 which is running Windows XP and Ubuntu as a dual-boot configuration and is connected to the router via Ethernet.
The problem initially started a few months back with web pages taking a very long time to load, a...
maybe someone should reply with the comment: "Can you please upgrade your other PC with Windows 7 to Windows-8 so we can pay more attention to your question. thx"
