12:02 AM
lol

Bob
Ok, screw it! I'm going to go try that VirtualPC/VHD idea :P
If it works, I'll have a different method to blog about? :P

So, I was on a boat in a storm and I thought... If anything bad happens with my laptop, I need to be able to port my Windows 8 with me, so... Why not put it in a portable VHD file such that I can drag it onto my USB stick? Let's do this!

@KronoS i'd like to chat about a blog post soon, actually.
but i'm presently going to the store

Bob
12:23 AM
Why... why does MS need a Java applet for a rather normal file download?!

@Bob: cause ms is ms.

Bob
Bleh. Downloading at 1.9MB/s. This is going to take a while :\

tho, I managed to download it with wget

Bob
lol

12:54 AM
boo
someone just downvoted one of my answers (which is correct IMO) without giving me the courtesy of telling me just why I am wrong.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Which answer? :P

It is not 'non standard video out for certain' since it is not video out at all. Might want to edit that. — Hennes 3 mins ago

Bob
D:
Virtual PC doesn't support 64-bit OSes... damn!

lol
thats mentioned in the link I linked earlier
the technet one

Bob
...should've read it :P
Backup plan: use VirtualBox to create a VHD file/install Win8

Bob
1:11 AM
Ok. I give up.
Next time, I'm reading existing guides first :\

Bob
I did not realise (forgot? I think I read this before) that Win7 Pro won't boot from VHD.
Maybe if I installed the Win8 bootloader... nah. Too much trouble :P
I'll skip this challenge

1:53 AM
@Bob That might help you ;) I was in the same plight

Bob
@r.tanner.f My intention was to boot from a VHD, not mess around with another partition :P

aww, so lazy :P

Bob
Thanks, though, I'll keep that in mind for when I get another HDD

@JourneymanGeek boo

You might be able to use Parted Magic to make another partition, but I have run in to some wonky behavior in the past because of it...

1:55 AM
votes are slow to come by on SU. unfortunately

Bob
@r.tanner.f I need to use this computer, right now (middle of exam block) is not the time to mess it up xD

ah-haha yeah don't touch it xD

2:42 AM
@KronoS A lot of these [windows-8] posts are craptastic IMO... Really wouldn't hurt to add a few links to posts about good and bad questions in the contest info. =\ I might be handing out some liberal downvotes for the next three weeks. I don't see it getting any better after Oct. 26th.
also I suck at markdown xD

2:56 AM
@studiohack good thing there's a voting component in the contest!
@r.tanner.f I agree. Downvote/flag/vote to close the bad ones. Upvote the good ones. We're working on an official announcement post which will include some info on how not to suck.
Originally, there was going to be a requirement that you earn the Analytical badge (read the FAQ) to be eligible for any prizes. Not sure if that ended up getting in the final thing.

Bob
@r.tanner.f [tag:windows-8] [meta-tag:windows-8-contest]

@Bob thanks =D

Bob
It's not markdown, it's just a SE shortcut - works outside of chat too :P
@nhinkle Now I want to know what that said :P

@Bob I misunderstood something

3:22 AM
@Bob LOL
@nhinkle you've already acheieved level 2. congratz!

@studiohack can you check out my message in the TL?
and thanks!

@nhinkle sure, moving over there

thx
@r.tanner.f just completed the first level - good job!

3:58 AM
@nhinkle Thanks =D What kind of things would you want to see about WAIK? I'm not entirely sure about it's Windows 8 compatibility, but I'll definitely play around with it and find out.

@r.tanner.f whatever you think might be interesting. Network deployment might be cool. Maybe using WAIK to make an integrated installer for Windows 7 and Windows 8 (i have a blog post and SU post about something similar that might be useful)
anything you're interested in, be it simple or complicated :P
@KronoS if you're around could you ping me?

@nhinkle Alrighty. I happened to do a somewhat lengthy project on WDS during college... I'll dig up some of that info and see if I can work it in to more of a Super User scope. Sounds fun.

4:24 AM
sounds awesome
we use SCCM to deploy images at work (also a university). we won't be rolling out windows 8 for a while though

lo people
eep, I missed a 'how do I pick parts' question :/

@nhinkle I'm here... but prolly not for long
what's up?

@KronoS can I borrow you in root kit for a sec? want to get feedback/ideas for the contest announce blog post

facepalms
I told my dad to get a data plan, he decided not to. Now I get calls so I can use google maps when My parents get lost ;p

4:40 AM
Finally after 11 freakin hours... this had better work

lol
what are you doing?

Finally I won

avirkI searched it a while and found some articles regarding Xperia Mini X10 also on XDA but I couldn't understand them easily. So I want help from you geeks who can give me the lighted way with simple steps to root my phone. I want a step by step guide about to root this model. I'm a not much fami...

@JourneymanGeek stupid @nhinkle has got me all on this his quest for win to go for win8 pro
wasted my whole day on it :P
(not really, but quite a bit of time)

@KronoS: lol
Thats my fault too ;p
gonna try working through the VHD install and documenting it for blog/post

what really has surprised me is the imaging has taken like 11 hours to complete. I'm wondering if it's becuase I'm running the slow USB 2.0
but still
@JourneymanGeek oh good!

4:45 AM
that sounds too long
I did it pretty quicky using the instructions from ars technica

@Bob I wrote that rule so that people didn't just copy pasta other people work

@KronoS I want to try out the Win 8 but I heard that there are no free trial activation any more?

@avirk: there's an enterprice ed trial

@avirk I have a license key from MSDN (well actually dreamspark)
@JourneymanGeek so you got it to work?

@JourneymanGeek link please

4:49 AM
@KronoS: on the CP
haven't bohered since then

Weird Chrome doesn't show Win 8 contest :(

@avirk: adblock

@JourneymanGeek good catch

also, google for the evaluation, I for one have no clue where exactly I got it from

@JourneymanGeek hmmm now I have to hard search for this one :P
@JourneymanGeek ping me.

4:54 AM
@avirk: why?

@JourneymanGeek want to check out something, just before I didn't get the notification tone and now I got it. Also they have change the notification design
@Bob thanks
@Bob I got the rooted phone now :)

Bob
@avirk Congrats! How did you end up doing it?
Ah.. :P

@Bob I asked it when I was on GB but there was only link referred which was not helpful me but now I'm with ICS so it was hard to get it, but finally succeed :)
@Bob after your suggestion for rootable kernel I searched for it and got the ST18i kernel for this and it done :)

5:26 AM
fish, WAIK is needed

5:36 AM
Anybody having the Bada SDK installed here?

@AmithKK still not, but why doesn't you Google for it?
@Bob are you there?

@avirk I can't really download 1.03GB now
I need to compile this

@AmithKK So what do you think if anyone refer you link then it would be less than original :P
@AmithKK Ok that's make sense, but unfortunately I don't think that anyone here has that :/

:/

@KronoS who you callin' stupid? :P

5:44 AM
@nhinkle he himself :D

windows 8 vhd install done
was SLIGHTLY harder than I'd have liked
needed the WAIK download too
which isn't done yet

@JourneymanGeek are you trying this superuser.com/a/490477/86550

IITS ALIVE
@avirk: similar but not quite
doing it off a VHD

@JourneymanGeek off a VHD?

@r.tanner.f: ping
@avirk: yes
I'm gonna answer this superuser.com/questions/490233/… and my answer is substantially similar to your self answered one. Just to note I'm not copying you or anything

6:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek you have asked it 18 hours before him but answering after him :P

I'll reference your answer if I do the blog post tho
@avirk: his question is very similar

@nhinkle it will over when I'll start to use Win 8 :P

@JourneymanGeek lol

@avirk: just cause there's a competition on does not mean that we can't behave like gentlemen

6:05 AM
needed SE Imgur upload for blog

@JourneymanGeek when I said you are rude to me :P

@avirk it's being released in less than a week, and you can get a preview now
in the blog post i'm writing:
> #But wait! I don’t have Windows 8 yet…
That’s OK! If you want to get started now, you can still:

- Download the release preview (beware that it expires January, and has some differences from the final release)
- Install a 90 day evaluation copy of Windows 8 Enterprise (this cannot be directly upgraded to Windows 8 standard or Pro, so consider installing in a VM or a machine you can reinstall later)
- Preorder Windows 8 Pro
- Wait until October 26th, at which point you can upgrade from Windows XP, Vista, or 7 to Windows 8 Pro for $40 through the built-in upgrade system

@nhinkle I think it will take a time to download for me, I'll ask to download a copy of that to my friend who has broadband, let's see if he would :/
I wonder even I can ignore a moderator :P

@avirk probably

@nhinkle there is :P
@Sathya are you around here? I want to know what I can do with my rooted device :P

6:22 AM
@avirk flash a rom

@AmithKK sometime you can't untill you don't unlock the bootaloader (at least for Sony phones) :)

@avirk install titanium backup.

@Sathya is Go backup is not like that/
I'm Googling for it and now I got one thing which is helpful for me is Clockwork Mod Recovery

@avirk nowhere close.

@Sathya Oo
I asked you as you are a rooted user from a long time :P

6:32 AM
@Sathya do you have blog access? could you take a look at the draft post i have for announcing the contest?

@nhinkle checking
wait blog doesn't have def WP auth anymore?
> We're having a party, and you're invited
can remove the comma after party

@Sathya ok

@nhinkle looks good otherwise

@Sathya it's integrated now :)

@nhinkle nice.

6:38 AM
@Sathya is any battery saver app really works ever for you?

Bob
I really need a UPS :\

o.O

yay, epic self answer done

Q: How would I do a VHD install of Windows 8 from windows 7

Journeyman GeekI'm currently waiting on my shiny new system to run windows 8 on. I have an older system that has windows 7 installed now on which I'd like to try windows 8 on in the meanwhile. I intend to use the enterprise edition evaluation in order to try it, and then uninstall it when I get my new system. ...

I think I SLIGHTLY overdid it on the screenshots

Bob
@JourneymanGeek MOAR SCREENSHOTS

what did I miss?

Bob
6:45 AM
I was kidding :P
Also, bcdboot comes with Windows 7.
I think.
Unless I have WAIK installed and didn't realise.
C:\Users\Bob>where bcdboot
C:\Windows\System32\bcdboot.exe

oh
edited
no more edits tho, I will cry if that answer gets CWed ;p

Hey guys where is @Oliver? Have not seen for a while here?

Q: How can I install Windows 8 on my HDD without the use of a USB or DVD?

r.tanner.fI decided to install Windows 8 on my home machine this weekend. I've already downloaded the Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation iso, however we just got done moving and somewhere in the chaos I've misplaced all my USB drives along with my DVD drive. On top of that, my home PC is the primary source of...

Bob
o.O
The BCD has a {badmemory} object... ...

do you really need all that stuff?
with Win 7 I used to mount an ISO using Magic disc & proceeded with the install

6:51 AM
and yay, I broke it
@Sathya: if you want to do it to a BCD, or discless, I'd guess so
ooh fun, I brokeded it

no need for BCD etc, the install would add the relevant bootloader entries
@avirk don't believe in them. All useless

@Sathya: the situation does feel slightly contrived

@Sathya hmmm thank you for confirmation :)

but it can happen ;p

need to try it out

6:54 AM
@Sathya is it possible to move app2sd which doesn't support this feature?

no clue.
I don't use apps for SD

@Sathya how much memory of your phone?
I've 512mb and can use 300+

memory or storage space?

hmm, the vhd might not always stay mounted
boo

@Sathya oh storage space :D

6:58 AM
@avirk 16GB

@Sathya that's why you don't use app2sd I've only 512mb so I have to :P

oh ffs
my wireless adaptor dosen't work in windows 8

Bob
@avirk ICS should have that option built in in the application manager
@Sathya The install would replace the bootloader, wouldn't it?

@Bob I have not seen it there? any clue about that how can I use it?

@Bob afair - nope

Bob
7:05 AM

@Bob as you see that it can't be move because it is disable the button, I'm asking can we move those apps too which not support app2sd function

Bob
My phone has 16 GB internally, but it's partitioned into about 2 GB for 'internal phone' memory and 14 GB as '/sdcard'. And then there's `/sdcard/external_sd' for an actual SD card..

yeah, same here

@Sathya I think both have same model?

Bob
@avirk Generally, it's better not to force them :P
There's a greater risk of the app breaking. That's about it.

7:07 AM
@Bob :P
Ok can I increase in call ringtone volume? Its too slow for me :(

@bob I meant to thank you for your networking help yesterday
in retrospect your idea of "reset to defaults, then try again" would have worked, since it would have erased all the VLAN variables
so yes, that is always good advice :)

heh

Bob
@JeffAtwood I wasn't the first to suggest that, I think :P
yesterday, by slhck
stupid question, but does that switch have a "reset" button?

VLAN is not quite as simple as I thought it was, the whole "you want physical segmentation? buy two different damn switches" starts to make some sense as a simpler choice :)
not that it's complicated it is just Another Thing to Think About in a world already quite full of things to think about

Who do we have as a guest today?

7:22 AM
ugh
network topology from hell
needs to figure out how to get his desktop temporarily online

For a while I was running a router behind a router so double-NAT-ed (for testing some of this stuff.. not any more)
I wonder how many levels of NAT you can run before things start to get crazy
I guess it only matters for peer-to-peer stuff where you need to accept incoming connections on a computer

I have a laptop with wireless connected to my network. I have a windows 8 desktop that is far away from the nearest wired lan point, and not worth lugging over just so windows can snarf some drivers
I got bot of them connected to each other...
hmm

i think you'd start to get annoyed by the latency before you'd get to the point of "oh my god how many 192.168's can there be on this path to the internet"
@JourneymanGeek connected w/ network cable?

ya.
wait, I can probably pull up a picture

bridge the connection, then the laptop acts like a router for the desktop

7:25 AM
I dunno, modern routers are really nice hardware. 128mb+ RAM.. decently fast CPUs. The current one (which is awesome) pulls 10w from the wall, twice as much as the Asus N16 it replaced.

alternatively, if you're just downloading some drivers, download the packages manually to the laptop, then just use a network share to copy them to the desktop

@nhinkle: I have no clue what drivers I need

@JourneymanGeek oh. Trying to do it windows update style?

hmm how do i bridge in windows 7?

Bob
7:26 AM
@JeffAtwood Heh, I have NAT on top of NAT on top of NAT beside NAT. Yay.

(other system is windows 8, but saying it is is just gratuitous contestwhoring)

Bob
I'm going to need to bridge them properly some time, but it promises to be a painful job :\

@JourneymanGeek i haven't done it in a while. i think you go into the network connections list, just select 2, right click, and say "bridge"

yeah @JourneymanGeek you don't need a gateway on that local connection, because you don't care if traffic ever leaves it

ok, let me try that and pray it dosen't blow up

7:26 AM
in other words, if you never plan to leave the house, whether you have a front door or not does not matter

yep that's right. go to control panel > network and internet > network connections
then ctrl+click to select two connections, and it's there in right-click. good luck...
if you go offline we'll know what happened :P
alternatively you might be able to figure out which drivers you need manually. the general technique here might work:
31
A: Where should I find drivers for my laptop if it didn't come with a driver disk?

nhinkleMost manufacturers let you download drivers from their website by entering your computer's model number or serial number. Here are links for a few of the most popular laptop manufacturers. You can usually find manufacturers' driver sites by googling manufacturer name drivers. Toshiba Drivers D...

this should totally work @JourneymanGeek because you have two private subnets, one wired, one wireless. So long as one is say 192.168.x.x and the other is 10.x.x.x or 172.16.x.x

@Bob NATCEPTION

o0 that worked

@JourneymanGeek bridging?

7:30 AM
ya

we need a high-five emoticon

Placed my right hand. Can't see anything now.

7:32 AM
also you must have a very very tiny hand
like a child's hand

@JeffAtwood Ctrl+ Ctrl+ Ctrl+ Ctrl+ Ctrl+.... there we go!

A: Is there an equivalent to Windows To Go for personal use?

KronoSBefore you begin: There are a few things that you need to take into consideration when doing something like this. The first and foremost being what medium and connection are you planning on using to create and run this portable OS. My recommendation is to use AT LEAST USB 3.0 or eSATA. The us...

@Sathya dammit i just punched my monitor...
@KronoS ohhh boy. You pulled a Nathan and went full-detail with it.

@nhinkle I finally got it working I think ^^

reading it now. do i get feedback on the blog post now? :P

7:33 AM
you guys should do a blog post on setting up OpenVPN

@nhinkle lol yes

@JeffAtwood been wanting to do that... but no time...

it's really useful, particularly if you have tomato on your router

@JeffAtwood hm. That might be interesting. I'll put it on my list of things to try to do during my short winter break when I don't have school :P

7:34 AM
two contest.. last semester at school... working part time... wife taking 26 credits hours... I'm crazy busy

but the setup is intimidating
the main rationale is, so you can be on public wifi somewhere, VPN in to your router, and be secure in your web browsing. For free!
the anti-firesheep

Bob
@JeffAtwood Huh.. intimidating?
Oh, with Tomato

@JeffAtwood yeah but then you have to add ComcastLatencyProPlusXfinity(tm) to your connection

@nhinkle looks good to me... when do you want to post it?

anyways just wanted to say thanks for the assistance yesterday and also the calls for "reset to defaults and try again" were kinda right in retrospect

7:36 AM
@JeffAtwood: I think I did it on linux ages ago.

Bob
I actually followed this one, which uses a full Linux server as opposed to Tomato: wiki.frantech.ca/doku.php/vpn:openvpn
Was easy enough :\

@JeffAtwood why tomato and not dd-wrt?

yeah, you don't need a full linux server.. modern routers are crazy fast, have lots of mem, etc
the one I use has 256mb!

@KronoS I'm thinking Monday morning

Bob
Heh. Modern mid-high end routers.
There's no way my routers would handle this.

7:36 AM
the rt-16n has 128mb and is $80 on Amazon

Heh. I still have just an ol' WRT54GL

Bob
o.O

although my housemate's got a linksys e2000 so i get to use that right now

Bob
Ok, I need a new router.

I'm sure SE community/chaos teams could hook you guys up with router hardware as necessary
asking is how you get things

7:37 AM
@KronoS: along the same lines want me to punch this up as a blog post? superuser.com/questions/490233/…

> k so next time linksys releases a new router, EVERYTHING WILL BE BLUE AND ROUTERY! :P

not asking is how you don't get nothing for nobody nohow :)

- me from a different room i can't link to

anyways, peaceout for now. Enjoy your Windows8-ing. Can't wait to get my preordered surface rt. And a Chromebook! Why not?
COMPUTERS ARE AWESOME
7

@JeffAtwood success!

7:40 AM
lol

they are ;p

words of wisdom, folks
3 mins ago, by Jeff Atwood
I'm sure SE community/chaos teams could hook you guys up with router hardware as necessary
ASK. ALL THE HARWARE!

@Sathya: I must do less bitching and more asking I guess ;p

I can attest to this. I have personally received... a surprising amount of hardware just from asking nicely.

7:41 AM
@nhinkle: being in the US is an advantage tho

except of course when you're outside US, in which case a big F U!

@Sathya Ivo's in the netherlands and he received a... like... $3k grant explicitly for the purposes of "making things awesome". Never say never!
@Sathya you better fix that capitalization mistake in the grace period before i do it for you :P superuser.com/questions/490529/…

@nhinkle what mistake :P
@nhinkle well, that was different.

@nhinkle ok I'll schedule it for the time slot that I normally do the QOTW

@KronoS I'm betting we could get Kingston to send us a couple of these:
> Kingston Technology 32GB Data Traveller Ultimate USB Flash Drive Mfr # KW-U4132-1FA
i should write my review of their mSATA drive before we ask them for anything more though

7:45 AM
enjoy lads

@JourneymanGeek ya go ahead!

I'm off for a bit

@nhinkle ya I would like that... they haven't talked to me recently though... maybe I should shoot them an email instead of tweeting...

@KronoS let's wait 'til i finish up with the thing they just sent me, then i can give you the Actual Person's Name Email i got contact from recently

7:46 AM
@nhinkle post is scheduled and ready to go.

@KronoS thx

right, running windows updates on windows 8. better bloody work ;p

I'm off to bed.
@nhinkle ya that sounds good
Level 1 completed... alright

@KronoS now on to level 2!

7:48 AM
@nhinkle ya not so sure about that... I have apptivate.ms to work on

so far @studiohack's the only one who's caught up to me (congrats by the way)

anyways I really do need to go to bed.

@KronoS true. And that's looking like it's going to be awesome.
surface, you will be mine!
