hmm. "Unknown user completed this challenge 22 hours ago"
Are we seeing people get booted for fraud in the challenge?

@OliverSalzburg have you downloaded them or not yet?
I have one in last 5 hours :P
@JourneymanGeek which one?

oh, naw, its glitching ;p
BUG REPORT!

@JourneymanGeek on meta?

duh
posted

1:11 AM
while they seems diff for you.
@JourneymanGeek for me last two unknowns are windows8fanatic and r.tanner.f
@JourneymanGeek I have a post with 5 votes but still I'm not in the second level?

@avirk: takes a while to update
could you comment on the meta post to that effect?

@JourneymanGeek my profile says I have completed the 2nd level 15% :P
@JourneymanGeek sure.

@JourneymanGeek: Look in Level 1, we have unknown users competing at the end. :D

@TomWijsman Yeah I noticed that lol

@r.tanner.f is one of them. ;O

1:16 AM
@TomWijsman: thats what I said ;p
@avirk: do you have enough 3 point answers?

/lastlog unknown

ah-haha I'm an unknown user xD SHHHHHH don't tell anyone ¬_¬

5 mins ago, by avirk
@JourneymanGeek for me last two unknowns are windows8fanatic and r.tanner.f
I see...
Sorry for not reading the conversation!

@TomWijsman: definately a bug

@JourneymanGeek ummmm I think I have only 1 answer with 3 votes :)

1:17 AM
runs

@avirk: read the criteria carefully ;p

@JourneymanGeek: But not the first bug. ^^

Is it possible do a Find or Run somehow to launch an app from [Windows-8] classic desktop? I keep switching to Modern to open stuff. I haven't asked this as a question because I have a feeling it is a stupid one :)

@Paul: pin it to the taskbar?
or do the toolbar trick

@JourneymanGeek so I should have 5 postwith 3 vots?

1:18 AM
create a folder with shortcuts and add a toolbar with it

@JourneymanGeek I mean in the first instance. So I am in classic, and I want to open something I haven't pinned or have a shortcut to

@avirk: correct. The number of 3 vote questions increases with level

@JourneymanGeek I thought I have to complete one task between 2 :P

@Paul: ahh. not as far as I've seen. superuser.com/a/491063/10165 this is the closest I've gotten
OH
one moment

@JourneymanGeek Yeah I really don't want a menu to trawl through, I kinda want a run dialog that supports search. Oh and the moon on a stick please.

1:21 AM
ya, there's nothing that does it without a 3rd party application
launchy might be a good fit here launchy.net

None of this will be an issue once everything is metro-ed (metroid?)

donno, I find myself almost entirely in deskto

It puzzles me how much of native windows is still classic-y that could work just as well in metro

except when looking up answers for metro related questions

I mean - why isn't the full control panel a metro app?

1:23 AM
the explorer file manager? ;p
cause metro is a little half baked ;p

On a related note, will MS ever stop us using the term "metro"?

prolly not
and honestly, 'modern ui' is a stupid name ;p

Yeah metro is half baked, but I reckon something like Control panel you could create a tool that just created a metro app out of it.

While I appreciate his enthusiasm, I am so tempted to remind this chap to select an answer superuser.com/users/166551/harish-shivaraman

Unless of course that the presentation and function of Control Panel are hideously intertwined and just skinning it metro isn't realistic

1:27 AM
which is bad design ;p
"I hate having to do this, and I really do appreciate your enthusiasm in asking questions but superuser is more than asking questions. You can answer them too, and of course, select some of the answers that have worked for you as the right answer, so others will know too. Its neat to see new people here with so much enthusiasm, and using the site as its designed to be used means both you, and others get the most out of it. There's more to SU than just the contest ;)"
sounds ok for a new poster who does nothing but windows 8 questions?

Can i upgrade to Enterprise directly from Windows 7 Pro or do i need to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro first?

Q: Upgrading to Windows 8 Enterprise edition

JayJust came across this page for Windows 8 Enterprise Edition I am particularly keen on Direct access without VPN as well as Windows to go. Can i upgrade to Enterprise directly from Windows 7 Pro or do i need to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro first?

lol, low hanging fruit there.

1:46 AM

A: Is it possible to use the IE10 App without making Internet Explorer the default browser?

avirkUnfortunately there is no way yet for this. You have to live with curse of MS. I think they don't want to let the user easily launch their favorite browser's with this limitations. While there are many lack of feature in IE-10 and one of the big are that the modern UI/Metro version of IE-10 do...

Someone voted me :P

@avirk: eheh. thats something I was trying to hack into working earlier.
/me just needs to get a 15 upvote question and he's on level 4 now :)

@JourneymanGeek still no hack for that, spent my last night for that :P

@avirk: trick would be to see how the program is called.
If FF metro worked, then we'd know its 'simply' a command switch
it doesn't of course ;p

@JourneymanGeek depended

what? ;p

1:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek yes I've image of enterprise now and let you know after installing, My friend downloaded but he don't know that from where's he download it :P

hmm, maybe process explorer or dependancy walker. Though, I'd need to work out the wierdish metro-desktop docking thing, and hope that I can dock IE10M

time to unlock the bootloader of my phone :P

@OliverSalzburg: minor bug in the theme, which also affects the blog. text is grey on grey on SU blog

@JourneymanGeek: Yeah, the +8's and +15's are tricky and just come with time I guess...
Or a lucky question or answer.

@TomWijsman: ya. I have two that are close ;p
(11,10)
questions seem to be drying up too

1:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek: Do you know if a +8 also counts as a +5? Or are separate questions needed?
ping ping ping :P

@TomWijsman: I think they do
I have 17 windows 8 'posts' total
ya, a 8 counts as a 5 and a 3

That's cool.

so you'd in theory 'just' need 15 questions to get level 4
one 15, 4 5s and 10 3s

Yeah, and getting a lucky upvoted post fills in all the votes.

2:00 AM
Now the only thing left to do is getting such post... :D

dude, there's a lot of tactics here ;p

Including memes in post, hmm...

precisely
If I had a red freehand circle I'd be RAKING in the rep ;p

Get Jeff to tweet a post, hmm!

that would help with the views/referral tiles too

2:02 AM
Or just self-answer all day and statistically one of the posts would hit +15.

whoever gets those has a pretty good chance of getting a keyboard
Some folk are trying that
none of them has gotten past level 1

superuser.com/users/166551/harish-shivaraman this is the only non regular user I've seen

Currently have 4 tiles, I'm normally getting a bounty given as well so it'll be 5 tiles, I'll surely write a blog post so that'll be 6 tiles.

his tactic is lots of questions, no answers.
(i've commented about this to him ;p)

2:03 AM
Only hard thing left to do is getting 50 referals and 1000 views to my own question.

dosen't need to be your own question

@JourneymanGeek Yes, it does.
> Ask a [windows-8] question that gets 1000 views

But yes, the 50 referals is any question.

for that, I donno, reddit?

2:05 AM
Is a referral just a view from an external source?

50 referals you'll have to link a pretty good question, else it might be tricky to get upvoted onto the reddit itself.

referral needs you to use the 'share' link
ya, quality is a big thing. ;p

So well, in the end I think I'll manage to get all but one tile.
@JourneymanGeek Or just link all questions on Reddit and let them choose quality. >_<

lol
see, this is why my sense of fair play is annoying ;p

Yeah, if it were just me I'd let 50 random IPs visit it. >_<

2:07 AM
lol

But that wouldn't be fair.

or post it on $socialnetwork site and get your friends to.

Or include an iframe on some website.

but but

Well, it's mostly going to be a combination of posting a link in various sources.

2:08 AM
that's cheating ;p
well thats fair

Yeah, I'll off course play fair.

I honestly think they should inspect what the users that get referred do.

Having a competitive streak and a overactive concience is a pain in the rear ._.

Could also attempt to ask a silly but on-topic question and attempt to get 1000 people to read it for fun. :D
@JourneymanGeek: We should have contests all year round, it actually makes me answer a lot of things on a daily basis.
Search for podcast on that. Pro spammer and no life... :D

2:29 AM
@TomWijsman: on the other hand, I do note there's a bit of a lack of quality with some answers ;p
but it also gets some people who seem promising active
superuser.com/users/138343/karan this guy seems alright for example.

3:30 AM
superuser.com/questions/491406/… is it just me, or is windows 8 being mentioned here an afterthought?

@JourneymanGeek If I were to give the benefit of the doubt....
Actually no.
I was going to say the OP might be thinking there are additional tools in W8 that help identify traffic sources - but it is the other guys machine that is causing the problem. So this does look like w8 tag for the sake of it

4:35 AM
commented to that effect. I really can't be arsed to edit out the tag
ahh history

It also featured an innovative pusher design, in which two aircraft engines powered a single constant-speed three- or four-bladed propeller at the rear of the aircraft. A purpose-built gearbox allowed either or both Pratt & Whitney of Canada PT6B free-shaft turbines to supply power via two driveshafts. The intent of the design was to provide the safety of multi-engine reliability, combined with single-engine handling in case of failure of one of the engines. A...

howdy @JourneymanGeek

how goes?

Working on installing a new Win 2012 Server

nice
physical, or VM?

Physical... idea is to port over my VM's to there

4:45 AM
ahh

ya... but the machine only has 4 gb's of ram... we'll see how this works...
though it's running core instead of GUI
kinda brings me back to the linux server days
(not that they were that long ago :P)

@KronoS I think people misunderstand your meta post on blog contest
perhaps edit it with some examples of good blog posts?
@KronoS o_O why? RAM is (relatively) cheap...

@nhinkle I'm poor :P

@KronoS whose server is it?

@nhinkle which blog posts would you recommend using?
(Most of them are mine so I'm kinda biased :P)

4:56 AM
maybe look at the stats and see which ones are popular?

@nhinkle the one that Jeff gave me

ohhh. i thought this was at work or something
very well then, carry on :P

@nhinkle oh no no no... a real place adopting a new server? ya right

still need 1 vote for level 2 :/

@nhinkle updated.

5:11 AM
@sathya not any more

@JourneymanGeek woohoo! Thanks!

@kronos: hope the one I submitted off my first win 8 qn didn't muck up. I seem to have bad luck with the blog

@JourneymanGeek didn't you do the build a nas one?
no that was sblair
which one did you do @JourneymanGeek?
OH You did the keyboards one... no that one was great @JourneymanGeek
and gosh dang! almost level 4!!!!

Q: How do I simulate Windows 8 RT in VS 2012?

KronoSVisual Studio 2012 has a wonderful simulator built in for creating Windows 8 apps. However, it appears that when I run it, it's running another light instance of my own PC (including start up programs). Windows 8 RT is a different experience without the desktop. Is it possible, and if so...

anybody know how to do this? ^^

the RT has the desktop, so what am I missing?
@JourneymanGeek you can blame me for that

@Sathya no the RT doesn't have the desktop
I want to simulate the RT expereince

5:21 AM

Lol. Getting a 15 pt answer is hard. Best I have is 11

@JourneymanGeek I have a 44 post :P but it's too early
@Sathya wait... RT has a desktop? if so MIND == BLOWN!!!!

@KronoS yes it does :P

> Windows RT will have a Desktop mode, but it will be restricted to pre-installed, Microsoft-produced software. This will include touch-optimized versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote as the new Microsoft Office
Ah ok... well this is still the case... The simulator is running a full version of Win 8 because it was third part desktop apps installed
I.E. Python, cisco vpn, etc,.
I'm wanting to simulate the actual WinRT expereince... if possible.
GO AWAY CLIPPY! I DON'T NEED YOUR HELP

lol
@Sathya lol. He needs to ask more, and select answers. ;p
@KronoS: I had a blog post based on my 'vhd install' post done up and submitted. Then somehow my keyboard tag script got in there somehow. Then I dropped it and did it again ;p

5:40 AM
@KronoS I don't see why the difference should make any difference? — Sathya 14 secs ago
will difference make any difference?

@Sathya I'm not sure... I'm beginning to think that this was a botched question...
In fact may be a dupe of the "What's the dif between RT and Pro" question
@JourneymanGeek well you can do that as well...
sorry it got dropped by the wayside

Q: What is the best keyboard for typing speed (not layouts)

GaptonSo I am a programmer, and I like playing typing speed games. My typing speed is, for common English words, 85 to 90 wpm, max 95. I type on various devices, my laptop, desktop, office pc.... they all have slightly different keyboards. Being a curious programmer, I wonder what types of keyboard i...

Google AdSense is a program run by Google Inc. that allows publishers in the Google Network of content sites to serve automatic text, image, video, and rich media adverts that are targeted to site content and audience. These adverts are administered, sorted, and maintained by Google, and they can generate revenue on either a per-click or per-impression basis. Google beta-tested a cost-per-action service, but discontinued it in October 2008 in favor of a DoubleClick offering (also owned by Google). In Q1 2011, Google earned US$2.43 billion ($9.71 billion annualized), or 28% of total revenu...

@slhck "Got warts? Get a free wart remover sampler" WUT?
Also, I swear a lot of indian bloggers are on the same (flawed) SEO playbook that suggests they must have lots of links on sites with lots of traffic.

@JourneymanGeek Nice, always wanted that..

(and I know this from... one of the people I flagged)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek We should put a big banner up: This site uses noref, links from here won't help you with search engines

noooo
where else would i... oh wait, I don't actually care about flags any more ;p

9:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, any effect on the blog is not intended :\
@avirk Didn't I send you the link? hartwig-at.de/~oliver/FXP141_cm-10-20121007-UNOFFICIAL-smultron.zip
I guess I didn't :\
@slhck "To make the whites of your eyes look brighter, use a light blue pencil under the eyes. Blue eye shadow lightly applied under the eyes works just as well." Sweet!

@OliverSalzburg: same site? ;p

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Pencil? My first thought was the writing implement. I don't want one anywhere near my eyes.

@Bob: but WHITER BRIGHTER EYES!
I was using bleach all along

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hm.. you might be on to something!
I'm going to go try that now!

@JourneymanGeek Well, I didn't want the style to apply to subdomains. As a CSS adjustment could never fit for main/meta/blog
@Bob "The pencil" being the marker next to your message that gives away that you edited it ;)

@JourneymanGeek This drives me crazy about the theme:

@JourneymanGeek You're trying to find the .exe with Wireshark? :D

yup
since its a html file being run by something else

Why not run Process Monitor or something?

well, cause i suspect this will be 'easier'
and I want an excuse to play with netshark

I didn't even know Wireshark knew anything about files

... you have a point

11:05 AM
That's somewhat comforting :D

what I really need is something like lsof
like.. process explorer

@JourneymanGeek Process Monitor logs socket open operations and similar

@OliverSalzburg: that I actually make mistakes?

@JourneymanGeek That there isn't a major functionality in WS I had no clue about ;)
