@Seth No, but the manufacturer of your motherboard will have one. As will sites like PC Part Picker or whatever it's called.

12:32 AM
Mainboard manufactures often publish lists of certified modules for their board
Those are often not the cheapest options that are available, but if you're going for a guaranteed compatibility, they're a good choice
And, if you buy off Amazon, and you get the wrong modules, just send them back and order other ones
It's not like you'll lose any money by making a mistake like that
It'll cost time, sure
But, if you make a mistake, you'll also learn something :)
And I'm really not a fan of Amazon, but their platform is very convenient in certain ways
But, really, with any online retailer, you can always return what you bought
Try to find the best component for your setup, then check where you can buy it for a fair price and buy it
And, seriously, finding the right RAM modules to buy for a machine is very easy. Especially when you have chat rooms like this one available to you

@Seth: there's a question specifically on that on SU ;p

Q: How does Motherboard and CPU affect RAM choice?

Håvard GeithusI am seeking advice on which memory to use with my motherboard and CPU. Below are my components and some relevant information extracted from their official websites. NOTE: Although this is a very specific case, a general answer is equally good for me — and also alot more useful for everyone els...

Thank guys, that was helpful :)
Turns out this machine probably won't play well with more than the 2GB it has anyway, which is pretty sad.
Although it is old.

@snipe: I seem to recall that's an anti piracy measure.

@JourneymanGeek Wasn't that where it put the build info in the corner?

Just spent an hour trying to figure out why this users CD writing software wouldn't load...
Uninstall, reinstalled. Restarted.
Still nothing...
Then "You do have your exemptions up to date, right?"
"Oooh, I saw a message the other day about that..."
/facepalm

Bob
3:46 AM
...exemptions?

exemptions?

By policy all access to CD/DVD/USB drives is disabled.
Part of a data loss prevention system.

ah, exemption from the access control policy

how long does it take to reinstate it in your org?

3:51 AM
@AaronHall I'm not sure. There's a form they fill out that goes off to a different team.
Probably a couple days to a week?

4:17 AM
Heh. We have that too. And cd roms in every machine. I've been occationally been tempted to try to use the eject command on an artist machine for kicks ;p
(I actually LIKE my job so no)

None of the laptops we used have disc drives anymore.

We use a ton of workstations that come with them standard. Our clients don't want us being able to use USB or cd drives or internet or...

@Psycogeek I have hearing aid batteries, type 312 like these: http://www.microbattery.com/Duracell-Activair-312-Hearing-Aid-Battery?sc=2&category=692

What I don't understand is why power meter shows 0.50v - 0.55v but battery is described being 1.4v?

The battery is from hearing aid manufacturer and has 2018 sticker on the package.

5:53 AM
Zinc-Air is a 1.4v nominal, slightly lower voltage than an New alkaline would be, while it has good longevity it does not have great current output. Zinc-Air Requires oxygen from the air, and would usually be sealed somewhere. After removing the seal, battery will activate. It takes a minute at most. If they were not properly sealed, they would be dead. If you tried to use a lot of power at once it may not even put out as much power as a Alakline. Different chemistry for different jobs.
Example a small zinc-air battery might not be a good choice for the 3X tiny batts in a tiny led flashlight or money checker , or small laser toys.
It will run it, and run it for days, but not at the levels that might be desired. Then if the batts go into a sealed tube, they will not have air, and will slow down and stop. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you desired. Once unsealed they will work for long times, but will die without any actual Load.
So the start and stop mechanism for zinc-air is the air, once the innards are exposed to air, it should then be used, and it will be "working" as long as the air is there, so it will die even if you do not use it.

@Psycogeek: nuked one, someone else got the other ;)

If you spend 40 million dollers to make a movie and it purposfully looks like a YouTube, you failed . failed to recognise that 99.8% of youtubes would not get even 0.5 stars on IMDB. failed because that means a 14 year old with an iphone could replace your whole crew. Failed because youtube is fully free, and some people still wouldn't pop popcorn for it :-)

lol. Making things look properly crappy is hard work ;p

Queasy cam, was the best way i have heard it descibed. My issue with it is, my eyes do not ever see things that way. If i walk or run or talk to people, My eyes use optical image stablisation, along with Deshaker brain processing :-)
So to attempt to recreate a psudo reality visual in front of the same eyes, they need to make some effort to Hold The Damn Camera Still!

7:24 AM
@Psycogeek: Making shakycam from proper footage is hard. I should know!
(But cheaper, wierdly, than taking shakycam to start with and adding stuff to it)

that and doing it in a 3D rendered video clips for games. Soo much work to make it bad :-)
Directors who do that have Eyeballs on thier toes, and drink too much .
yeash , dats zactly whats it woulds looks like, now pours me another scotch.

Arugh subqueries and alias' in oracle
why on earth is this value named...... value \o;

Better than value \o/ ?

hehe
no, just value
'value'

I think the \ is a escape symbol.

select value from value where value
select count, realvalue
from
(select count(*) as count, (select e.value from ENTITYCUSTOMPROPERTY e where e.propertyid = 850) as realvalue from ENTITYCUSTOMPROPERTY)
group by realvalue;
i'm stuck trying to do something, except now I've forgotten what I was trying to do ;)

that is why your supposed to put that inert documentation into the code, so 2 months later when your trying to change it , you know WTF that was, whoever wrote it.
AKA who wrote this shi| into my code, it couldnt have been me.

7:53 AM
hehe
well even the dba incharge of it is like 'i hate this db'
but the annoying thing is I can't do a group by on the alias.

How the hell did Adobe get it's ass into HTMML5

10:00 AM
The same way macrovision has protection things in various places , they started up the protection methods used widely?
The real question as seen in the comments "How will this work w/FARMVILLE?" :-)

@HackToHell: Designed by comittee, and adobe does a bunch of stuff people who do video and DTP use ;p

10:16 AM
(and heh, I need to install their crap on a VM so I can de-drm my google play books books)

11:04 AM
" the default behavior in Windows is to connect to Ethernet first then any wireless networks already" I do not get that here ever. I wonder if it is observed this way when the person has not created an actual wireless connection using the wireless device?

hhi hi
can i pick brains about php?
@HackToHell meh, if it's a service which sells the viewing of the content on a 'one off' basis im fine with it
what I don't want is to have to authenicate the fact I brought a DVD through my web browser...

When they have not yet logged onto a working connection , that is then tested by winders for "internet" .

@Psycogeek Windows assigns different 'costs' per interface. IIRC based on interface speed.

So does Linux...
it's called the metric
and listed in teh routing tables...

So a 11Mbit wireless and a 100mbit wired will usually default to using the 100mbit is available.
Yup.
I am not sure what windows does when presented with wireless-N (e.g. 300mbit) or the presumed faster 100mbit wired.

11:08 AM
hmmmm interesting...

Using the default whatever metric they have there, any slow ass wirless connections , will start using that, and ignore my very fast ethernet. In both Xp and both win7 Desktop systems.

My win7 laptop uses wired whenever that is connected.
I do not remember changing that.
Stressing: remember.
I might have toyed with it since it was installed in 2010

It would make as much sence for a laptop (and driver setups) to prefer an ethernet internet connect as it would for a desktop. Do most lappies also have a quick switching method for turning wifi off ?

@Ramhound I wonder if it counts as 'installing windows' if I cat/copy/ghost/whatever tool an image from a working installation to a second disk, and then consider seconds disk to have an installled windows.
Most have a switch to turn wireless off.
Not all though
And some of those are not proper hardware switches but requires some OS or ACPI intervention

ohhh

11:16 AM
The default setup is probably sensible for most people.
Though I am one of those people who want to be able toi use wired and wireless at the same time.(and connected to different networks)
Windows 'helpfully' got in the way when I wanted to do that.

it worked here
the problem was the 'networks' both using the same ip space D:

It could be other restrictions i have applied to the ethernet , like limited protocols, no sharing, and manuel dns and static ip and all that other stuff i mess with, changed winders opinion of that connection :-)

11:31 AM
So php
can I call array_merge($toBeMerged);
?

0
A: PHP array_merge: argument not an array?

Otanaught You are trying to merge an object ($arr) with an array ($temp). PHP should complain that $arr is not an array. See the example code below: php > $obj = new StdClass(); php > $obj->property = "value"; php > $arr = []; php > array_merge($arr, $obj); Warning: array_merge(): Argument #2 is not an ...

sorry, let me rephrase
can I call array_merge($toBeMerged[]);

says as long as it was initlised as an array?

:D
hey dawg, I heard you like arrays...

oh well now you go making all complicated

11:38 AM
Right, to be begining
I have 4 db results, in arrays
wait, that's dumb.
pg_fetch_all returns an array, so I don't need to proactively merge them, I can drop the results all into the same array.

wow.

12:18 PM
$clean_array = array_unique($result);
Causes $result to change? :/

12:48 PM
Ugh, I have a REALLY annoying bug with my Office installation.
well, not exactly a bug
My Office 2013 install on my laptop is set to what I believe is Turkish
And I have no idea how to fix it
My instinct is to download an LIP, but there aren't any for Dutch

Bob
Try English first.
Start menu search for office language. IIRC there was a config program, but I've never used 2013

I'll try English, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the language pack to activate
Oh great, because my Office is set to Turkish, all the Start Menu searches are in Turkish as well...

Bob
o.O
Look for the Office program group then
(go All Programs)

12:57 PM
I managed to get to that screen, but I don't know what to do there
I've never had to change my office language before, so I can't even rely on prior location memory
Also, if it's not Turkish, I don't care, I just want it fixed back to Dutch or English
Think it's worth making a question for?

superuser.com/a/510269/98855 this answer seems to suggest that you may find something in Add/Remove , program install stuff ? I was thinking it might be a DISM item (packages).

Bob
Well, I don't even have Office on this machine... gimme a sec

Okay, I'm one step closer.
It's not Turkish, it's Latvian

Bob
@NateKerkhofs In the dropdown, select English and click the button to its right.

Still doesn't explain how to remove it

Bob
1:02 PM
Wait, that adds the editing language
display language is the bottom left box
You sure your system language is set correctly?

How do I check that?

Bob
@NateKerkhofs Region and language settings via control panel
Or maybe not
shrug I don't know

@Bob looks like you now have a translation table for part of it :-) (where the default buttons are)

My system language is set to Dutch

Bob
I wonder what would happen if you set the system language to English

1:06 PM
I'm going to try that now
Okay, so changing my system languagee to English didn't help, the options in the start menu are STILL Latvian

Bob
Reinstall Office?
:S
How did you install this one anyway?

It's a trial that came by default with the laptop
laptop is an MSI GT70 from early December with a recovery partition

Bob
o.O

the disk with software that was included is on my attic, so finding it would take me a while

Bob
Well, there's Dutch, English, etc. language packs => microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/…
And the interface pack is free for English => support.office.microsoft.com/en-au/article/…

1:11 PM
IMPORTANT If you are looking for languages like English, French, Japanese, Russian, and Turkish, you need to buy a language pack

Bob
Wait, no :P
whoops

Free? really?
And Dutch isn't in there
It's one that needs to be bought
A language pack costs 20 EUR. Really? they want me to pay 20 EUR just so I can actually use Office?
I'd try recovering my laptop from the image, but I'm not sure if it'd fix the issue

Jesus fucking christ! I'm trying to download a printer/scanner management software from HP. So, first of all you need an HP Passport account to even get started, which requires like 10 fields to be filled
Then you get sent to a page that says you'll get a confirmation code by email, which you can use to download the software. I'm not getting any email

how else will they spam your e-mail for the next 20 years? (and believe me they do, but mostly nicely)

Now I understand why Office is pirated that ofen

1:16 PM
After some back and forth, I get sent to a survey, where you have to fill out all kinds of shit until you actually get to the download page

Bob
@NateKerkhofs Question is how you ended up with Turkish in the first place.
Never seen that before.
Maybe if you purchased your laptop there?

And then the download isn't actually the file, it's the fucking HP Download Manager O____o

I have no idea. and it's not Turkish, it's Latvian

I'm gonna kill someone

no, I bought it on a stor

Bob
1:17 PM
@OliverSalzburg Which one are you trying to download?

store in Belgium
it's the first time I've opened Office on my laptop since my last reimage

@Bob HP Web Jetadmin
And, of course, the download manager download has to be initialized through a popup

Bob
> To download the HP Web Jetadmin software or any of the packages listed, click Select on this page. You will be directed to a short survey after which you will receive a download confirmation plus confirmation number (for example, 4100XXXXX) both in your browser and through an email with subject text: HP Order Fulfillment Electronic Delivery Confirmation. Your confirmation will remain active for 120 days and can be used for subsequent downloads. If you already have a confirmation number, use the Electronic Download item on this page (left-hand navigation area).
o.O

My desktop computer is still in storage while I'm refurbishing my bedroom, otherwise I'd take my laptop back to the store

Ah, there's a dropdown to get "standard downloads". Why is that not the default?

@Bob Yeah, that's where you get started

Bob
wait, no, that redirects to the main page
fail
send them an email

open office has a dutch language pack, and it is free :-) openoffice.org/download/index.html

Open office doesnt have the ribbon last time I checked, which is what makes MS office so good

Bob
there's an unpopular opinion if I've ever heard one :P

1:21 PM
@Bob Thank you very much for contacting HP customer support. We're sorry for the inconvenience. To download HP Web Jetadmin, please go to h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=13039 and follow the instructions.

the ribbon? oh i hate that

@Psycogeek Why, exactly?

And I even downloaded the software earlier from a mirror. The installer then told me "OH MY, you have a reboot pending. Please reboot before install. kthxbye"
So I reboot and restart the installer
It then tells me that it's 32bit and my OS is 64bit and that it won't work
And now I have the 64bit version and it tells me the same shit! O_______o
This document scanner better be worth all this crap!

@NateKerkhofs All these things they keep closing up the working spaces. another bar, another menu, bigger status bottoms, some day there will be room for 1 paragraph and unnessisary crap everywhere.

Bob
"Your computer is 128bit. Please download the 128bit version"

1:24 PM
What they really need is Multi_Select menus :-)

Are you using the same ribbon I'm using?
I never had issues with ribbons opening other bars or menus
most of it is right there on the main ribbon, and the rest are just extra windows that you can close when you're done

@NateKerkhofs I doubt it, i am using word 97 sr2 , no net connect, no activations, fully portable, does everything any of this other stuff does. tables, pictures, even will write a letter :-)
cept it wont open a docX Auuuuggg
looks like wordpad will do that though. even though open office did it fine.

which is exactly what I NEED, since every company uses them these days in their job description pages.
Fortunately, there is such a thing as free Office Online.
I just need to make sure that any documents I wish to edit are in my Dropbox
But sometimes, you don't have internet but need a text processor

Why would i give the internet my letters?
those people are crasy

Dropbox isn't exactly "the internet"
And besides, I don't keep any really important data in my dropbox folder. my résumé, my WoW config files,...

1:45 PM
That's what you have to go through to download a piece of software to run their device
Seems like that Jetadmin isn't what I needed
2

@OliverSalzburg And why exactly did you need that piece of software? And why didn't it ship on a disk with your machine?

@NateKerkhofs The device is used, off Ebay

I see.

And I need it to configure the document scanner. At least, I think I do, because the menu on the device isn't getting me anywhere
The documentation says it uses DHCP, but he displayed IP address is not from within our DHCP range
And there is no network configuration item in the menu
The service manual has 267 pages wtf
Oh, to change the IP address, you have to use the internal web server. How fucking convenient!

Bob
@OliverSalzburg You can set up a VLAN, right? :P
@OliverSalzburg Is there a reset option anywhere?

2:01 PM
@Bob Factory reset was one of the first things I did. Has no effect on IP configuration :P
But I already assigned myself an address in the same network and have now switched the scanner to DHCP

hmmm

Now I have to configure an SMTP gateway

i wonderh ow large a csv I can stick into this script without blowing up :<

2:36 PM
urgh, not sure what method is best for simply 'grepping' a csv in php
I just need a yes/no on some identifiers being found.

2:50 PM
@djsmiley2k preg_match

Wanna hear a funny story?
So yesterday I went to my friend's bookstore.
They have wi-fi on the shop.
The password is taped to an open area wall
Not that bad, as I figured he want to give free wifi to customers while keeping neighbours away.
So far, so good
However, I scanned the network with an android app (basically, a very simple, barebones, poorman's nmap) and found three PCs with network shares
One is the store's PC
with guest access enabled on the C: root folder

Isnt that for the Security geek discount :-)

Nice way to handle UAC prompts :P

3:06 PM
Quick electrical question.
My office has a hotel-style compact refrigerator which has no fans.
Needless to say, the compressor gets very hot.
Would putting a fan behind the fridge to cool the compressor increase efficiency?

@DragonLord It should have a large heatsink
I mean a network of pipes
That increase the cooling surface area

The condenser has a heatsink on it, but it's of cheap construction
It's just a series of metal tubes, no copper cooling fins like on higher-quality models.

1 min ago, by HackToHell
I mean a network of pipes
Now @DragonLord tells his boss this, and next morning he finds a network port on his fridge.
"It's just a series of tubes, right"?

No, it's my home office.

!! s/boss/wife/

3:10 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Now @DragonLord tells his wife this, and next morning he finds a network port on his fridge. (source)

...and I'm not talking about the condenser pipes proper.
I'm looking at cooling the compressor itself.

@DragonLord any movement of air across fins and coils and all vastly improves the thermal transfer over passive only, but that huge hunk with oils in the freon thing isnt going to cool much. You could cool it some through the coils, as the oil in the freon passes through it all. They are not designed for that need, but it works.

@Psycogeek Very interesting and informative. If I remove seal once (it was sticker) and put it back on, do you think a fraction of air will still get there and cause unused batts to work under their efficient working level? I removed one to check and put sticker back on so time will tell anyway.

@Boris_yo Are we talking about zinc-air hearing aid batteries?

@Boris_yo yes. there is even a zinc-air flashlight (tiny thing) that works on that principal, of turning on and off (slowly) by control of the air.

3:18 PM
@Psycogeek Did you see those funny prank clips on YouTube? Specifically there was one where chicks agreed to have sex just because guy who offered it had luxury car. Not sure if staged or not but I felt sorry for younger brainwashed generation selling their soul over materialistic things. Zero human values!

Ha. I get 45 upvotes for an answer that took me around ten seconds to type. superuser.com/a/913471/8972

@DragonLord Yes.

@DragonLord My fridge is huge and doesn't have fans either
And the compressor gets hot as well. I doubt spending more energy on a fan will increase overall efficiency
...unless you overclock it ;)

@Boris_yo Yup got my Farrari on order, gonna get me a gold digger :-) or just any woman that recognises wealth as security , in a world where money buys anything (including well you know:-)

@Psycogeek That chicky trend totally goes against my values and principles.

3:23 PM
@paradroid Been there: P

@ThatBrazilianGuy Yeah, not the first for me either.
Just a nice surprise to see when you come back to the site.

@Boris_yo On the other hand, enough tries with the Bold walk up to stranger and Ask (confidence) , and there were women that were ok with going off in a strangers car , to some fun activity. Sooo "It does not hurt to ask".
(and lets not say anything about ted bundy, because that aint what i am talking about :-)

3:38 PM
@paradroid Yeah, but makes me wonder how many high-rep users might not be that knowledgeable
I've seen a few of them. Specially from older questions / answers that wouldn't stand in current standards.

Is like this @DragonLord ?

@ThatBrazilianGuy Bounty hunters?

Kinda—it's passively cooled.
@paradroid @harrymc will look at it.

@Psycogeek Parts of a fridge?
heh

That is experiment 4768 , how to get the hot part outside , because in california we dont need the heat inside.

3:41 PM
@Psycogeek How did you dismantle a fridge without damaging the tubing?

And does the element still contain the original coolant?

@DragonLord all the framing stuff dies a horrible death of sawzalls and dremmels and hammers
yes it still works, it is used through a window, to dehumidify and cool a media storage room.
And i guess the SSD go in there now too huh :-P See Yikes stars ---->

@Psycogeek I get strange noise from laptop's bottom where SSD is placed. Reminds a little bit of HDD head clicking but noise is softer... Strange.

The clunk that happens in a SSD is from "clenching" to keep all the data in :-)

3:53 PM
@terdon Hello, I am here now.

@AntonTodorov Hi
So, what errors do you get with glenn's answer?
OK, let's move to a different room (sorry to do this again) so we don't spam the main room with this discussion. I created a new one here: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/23738/…

What Not to do Question of the week superuser.com/questions/914255/… deny permission for the entire disk. (ok dont need to try that at home)

Profound question which I didn't realize I knew the answer to until I thought about it for a moment: Why do they ship potato chips, pita chips, etc. in opaque bags with images printed on them of the product, instead of just making the bags transparent?
Obvious answer: They don't want people rifling around through all the bags to find the one with the least number of crushed up chips.

Bob
4:07 PM
@allquixotic Because branding is important. Because they use foil (supposedly better seal), and foil is not transparent.
Probably more reasons than that.
Crushed chips are a relative non-issue.
hm
Metalized films (or metallised films) are polymer films coated with a thin layer of metal, usually aluminium. They offer the glossy metallic appearance of an aluminium foil at a reduced weight and cost. Metalized films are widely used for decorative purposes and food packaging, and also for specialty applications including insulation and electronics. == Manufacture == Metalization is performed using a physical vapor deposition process. Aluminium is the most common metal used for deposition, but other metals such as nickel or chromium are also used. The metal is heated and evaporated under vacuum...
looking at the table under properties, you have 2.5% moisture and 0.25% oxygen permeation with metalised PET vs just a thin PET film

It is amasing how fast air (and helium) passes through a latex baloon , leavin it limp and lifeless, vrses a mylar one.

I used to use mylar to cover the walls and ceiling in my weed growing days.

@Psycogeek Shouldn't be to hard to fix though.

They make vaccume sealing bags that come in both metalic and clear. and metalic with window. so it must be possible to keep air passage out via at least some style of FDA approved clear bags.

4:22 PM
Assuming the disk is not encrypted: Boot from USB pendrive. Replace sethc.exe with cmd.exe. Reboot. press shift five times. Run icals

@Hennes I thought that fixing the permission swipe would be able to be fixed also, but then i remembered that there are "different" permission in different areas, sooo I am not sure anymore.

You would have access. And then you need to compare the permissions with an old backup. Same way as in the many "Halp! I chmod -R something / and now my Linux will not boot" posts

Bob
4:45 PM
@Psycogeek IIRC the clear vacuum sealed bags are usually relatively thick.
@Hennes I've always done that with Narrator.exe :P
You can also fix it by booting into the recovery environment (or from DVD) and accessing the command prompt from there.

Yup. Just posted that

Bob
But you wouldn't really be fixing a recursive action like that. Best you could do is access your data, but you've probably wrecked some default settings along the way.
Best course of action is to restore the OS from backup, or reinstall.
Which you've mentioned, I see :P

@Hennes I would like to see this superuser.com/a/914314/98855 answer start with the Positive "it can be done" (without reinstall , without system restore) answer first. to counter all the "thats impossibles"

The sad paert is: I probably could not do it. Or not without google.
I have no idea what the windows equivalent for find is. (etc etc)
