Q: Script - Lenovo Battery Recall

semtex41Problem: Lenovo has expanded its voluntary recall of notebook batteries. They request the industry to run their utility, LenovoBattery.exe, and submit the generated .csv to their respective Lenovo Sales Rep. Their documentation states the example is not compatible with .bat files. Scope: SCCM ...

Uhm a quick question regarding good coding practices
Is this considered ok?
convo =x.html().toString().substring(0, x.html().toString().indexOf('<'));
or should it be that x.html().toString() be pushed to variable and then I do the indexOf operation on it ?

Bob
Eh, so-so.
Latter is better. Makes it clearer.
Also potentially more efficient.
Even better, you can make a takeUntil (or other name?) function that does this for you.
It all depend on what you'r edoing, though.
Quick stuff? I wouldn't bother. Anything long-term? Yea, proper naming helps.

Okay thanks, I suppose a function makes more sense

@MichaelFrank not spam, jsut badly written

@MichaelFrank Does that mean today is your birthday ?

that car so fugly. :D
ok two lists, huge one and short one
i'm right in thinking I should parse the short one looking for matches in the huge one rather than the other way around?
It's too early and my brain isn't turned on yet...

Would it be a perfect match or a partial one?

6:51 AM
It's not a substring match if that's what you mean?
Basically I have a list of 'broken' customers.
I also have a list of 'customer id's to ignore because of known issues'.
If x is in y then I can flag it to be ignored.
Does that make sense? :/

7:20 AM
meh i'll get to that problem later :D
IS ze the problem right now,
i don't see any unexpected } ":D
Ah found it ffs

Hm, my UEFI boot menu no longer shows "Windows Boot Manager", even though it was there yesterday.. how can that happen? :( Hard disk drive failure potentially?

D:
bad update?

Don't think so. I made no changes. But from one day to another I can't boot any operating system. Neither Linux nor Windows. Whatever boot option I choose I just get a black screen with the blinking cursor..

@ThatBrazilianGuy It's a holiday in Germany today, maybe it other countries as well. Some Christian thing I believe

!!wiki Feast of the Ascension

The Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, also known as Ascension Thursday, Holy Thursday, or Ascension Day, commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into heaven. It is one of the ecumenical feasts (i.e., universally celebrated) of Christian churches, ranking with the feasts of the Passion, of Easter, and Pentecost. Ascension Day is traditionally celebrated on a Thursday, the fortieth day of Easter (following the count given in Acts 1:3), although some Christian denominations have moved the observance to the following Sunday. == History == The observance of this feast is...

Well, 70% of our calendar is holidays, but no holidays today
Turns out people are discussing / organizing this semester's strike
It figures. I was wondering the other day, I think we had only one strike so far
Or am I confusing it with the weeks near Carnaval?
What saddens me when the departments go on strike isn't the expected reduced amount of work, closed offices, unanswered emails and phones
Over here we call it "Wednesday"
What really saddens me during a strike is the snack bars are closed too :(

This is a bit of an odd/maybe obvious one. I have a desktop computer (with wake-on-lan enabled) and a windows (x86) tablet. When my desktop computer is off and I start up and login to my tablet, my desktop starts booting up. Why is this happening?

@njallam Something is sending the magic packet. You'd need a network monitor between the desktop and the closest switch/router/link and to investigate where the signal is coming from. Otherwise, we can't say for sure

Well, I have narrowed it down to being something that happens when my tablet logs in
so it must be a program

Does it do it when you start up the tablet in safe mode?

ooh that's a plan
I'll test that
Well, turns out it's a little strange booting safe mode with Bitlocker enabled

7:46 PM
Really? Why?

@OliverSalzburg As a Christian.. I've never heard of this feast. o.O

@CanadianLuke I need to enter the recovery key to change the boot up settings to allow safe mode

@MichaelFrank My Google Calendar marks it as "Ascension Day"

Anyway, still happens in Safe Mode
(w/ networking)

In German, it's "Christi Himmelfahrt"

7:50 PM
Nothing on my Google Cal. Weird.
Must be a regional thing

I logged in and as soon as I clicked my SSID (touch drivers not enabled) it made my desktop boot up

And if you do Safe Mode? What about Safe Mode with Command Prompt?

well there would be no network access?
so nothing?
It only sent the wake packet when I connected to the WiFi network from Safe Mode w/Networking

I need to get better about asking questions rather than simply posting them in chat. So...

Q: Headphones detected by Windows when plugged in but doesn't detect the unplugged event

Ben RichardsI replaced the front panel PCB on my desktop computer when I pulled on the headphone jack and broke it. I got a new one and installed it. I double-checked that everything is hooked up correctly and that I attached the grounding wires precisely how they were on the original PCB. However, with the ...

@OliverSalzburg Surprised that it's an official holiday. It is a holy day on the liturgical calendar. It's the Feast of the Ascension (of Jesus into heaven after his resurrection from the cross). I went to the vigil Mass for it last night.
It's not an official holiday in the US.

@BenRichards We have several Christian holidays in Germany that are only official holidays in the really hardcore Christian states (like Bavaria). But this one is all-over, if I'm not mistaken. But, yeah, it varies
But I like holidays that aren't holidays in other countries. It usually means someone takes care of the bug reports I file! :D

@OliverSalzburg Hah! :)

That looks like something from HL: The Lost Coast?

@MichaelFrank Thief, actually.

@BenRichards Ahh.. I was going to pick that up. But after watching a gameplay it looked super on-rails and sorta put me off.

@MichaelFrank It actually is not on rails at all. There's specific missions you have to do, but it's open ended in a more Far Cry or Crysis kind of manner.
And there's side missions and everything as well.

Ahh okay. I was under the impression that there was really only one path to complete each mission.

9:05 PM
@MichaelFrank Well you have options of how to complete them. They rate your play style according to three categories. I seem to play as predator all the time. Probably because I'm not good enough at stealth in this game which leads me to being spotted a lot. :)
Between missions you also have free roam over the whole city (or at least the parts that are unlocked and aren't reserved for specific missions). There's lots of hidden stuff everywhere. It's pretty cool.

@BenRichards Haha, I play stealth games that way. "Oh, I've been spotted? Better just kill everything instead."
2

@MichaelFrank Yeah, but sometimes I will restart if I'm not too far ahead from my last save, and try again. Also, some missions will autofail if you're discovered.

Speaking of stealth games, have you played Styx?

I have not

9:20 PM
@BenRichards Assassin's Creed is like this, too, especially in newer installments.

@DragonLord Ah. I like that challenge, actually. I find it more fun if I can finish it without being detected vs having to kill everything. I actually haven't played Assassin's Creed though. At this point, I'm not going to bother. There's too many other games out there that I can enjoy before I can spend the time in yet another game franchise.

@BenRichards Honestly, the first two are the best.
Then they pretty much completely drop the whole premise of the original game's story in favour of pushing out games ASAP.

I do have the first AC on disc, just haven't really played it.
Ah

9:48 PM
The third game (AC:III) is pretty cool because it's set in the Americas.
lol one of Karan's answers got caught in the low quality review queue.

So... we have these network/power ports under the table in these little covers in all of our meeting rooms here.
They have a label "Replace cover after use." on the underside of each lid.
For the longest time I was confused at why you would need to get a new lid every time you opened the hatch.
And it just clicked with me today that they mean 'put it back after you're done'.
