4:00 PM
what good is a tool that skews the results that much? >_>

Bob
or, sometimes it alternates - one ping <1, next >2000, next <1, next >2000
probably just some driver weirdness

@Bob it might not be able to scan for networks at the same time as talking to your router
weak sauce.

Bob
@allquixotic that's kinda what I was thinking, but that's seriously shitty
I was hoping it wasn't just me

@Bob realtek? :D

4:02 PM
@Bob even worse :D I recall in Windows XP, Ralink's early drivers would hang your entire system (holding some kind of central lock in a critical section in the kernel) for 2-3 seconds each time it probes for networks
now they probably just split off into a kernel thread or async or something, but the hardware limitation of "we can't do anything while we probe" might still be there on Ralink hw

Bob
@allquixotic WHAT

@Bob yep. mouse cursor, sound, video, everything stops and waits for them to probe... that was in their older Windows XP driver
it was synchronous DMA, apparently

Bob
...too bad I can't get an Intel chip that's dual band, has bluetooth and is compatible with HP's fucking whitelist at the same time
@allquixotic ...which retard thought that was acceptable?

context switch, get the big kernel lock, enter critical section, send a request to wifi chip that takes 2 seconds to get a response from

Bob
how does that kind of product get released?

4:03 PM
basically a rookie mistake

Bob
I mean, did it go through ANY testing?
and Ralink's drivers are broken on 8.1 for me

@Bob likely not, because the Windows driver certification program (WHQL) was very limited back then, and you got no warnings whatsoever from Windows if you installed a non-WHQL driver

Bob
not to mention no reply to my email/support request
yet another company that won't fucking reply
those really piss me off

the thing that makes modern drivers slightly less terrible is that non-WHQL drivers simply refuse to install on 64-bit Vista-and-later
the amazing thing to me is that Ralink has WHQL certified drivers that are as broken as you say they are

Bob
@allquixotic but didn't it go through any in-house testing at all?

4:05 PM
they make fine hardware, but they must employ the lowest-IQ driver programmers in the world

Bob
@allquixotic common theme amongst hardware manufacturers :(

funny thing is, Ralink's hardware runs decently well on open source, community-hacked drivers in the Linux kernel

@allquixotic This is a special class of "neener neener, here's your hardware good luck and thanks for all the fish!"

a rare example where Linux's builtin drivers for hardware run better than the Windows equiv
we need the opposite of ndiswrapper
for poor Windows users XD
OH!

Bob
@allquixotic I wonder if I can passthrough it to a VM and bridge the networks :P

4:07 PM
here's a terrible idea Bob... and I mean terrible
omg... you thought of it at the same time

Bob
xD

that sounds absolutely dreadful. DO IT

Bob
@allquixotic if only I could

o rite, VM stuff is borked on your box too

Bob
huh?

4:08 PM
didn't you say something to the effect of VMW doesn't work on your box?
or is my brain's swapfile corrupted

Bob
@allquixotic it's a PCIe card

ohhhhh

Bob
I don't think I can do that in VMware Workstation

...PCI-E passthrough! :D
do you have VT-D? :D

Bob
> When running on Linux hosts, with a recent enough kernel (at least version 2.6.31) experimental host PCI devices passthrough is available.
kinda defeats the purpose :P

4:11 PM
drat.

Bob
o.O
my laptop CPU does have VT-d

nice :)

Bob
why on earth would they have that on a mobile CPU? no clue.

now to find a hypervisor that does PCI passthrough on Windows hosts

Bob
@allquixotic I'd install Hyper-V, but that's broken on this machine :\

4:13 PM
looks like Hyper-V doesn't support generic PCI-e passthrough, anyway.
drat. :(

Bob
> Graphics Output eDP/DP/HDMI/SDVO/CRT
what on earth is a CRT output? o.O

@Bob I think they mean VGA :) probably :)
hmm... now there's a thought... of course I definitely lack the knowledge to implement it myself...

Bob
> Intel® My WiFi Technology Yes
4G WiMAX Wireless Technology Yes
???
why are those on a CPU feature list?
does my CPU have a built-in WiFi radio? o.O

ralink drivers on Linux are open source and work.... Windows DDK can be installed for free (AFAIK).... smart programmer implements Windows/NDIS driver for ralink cards based on Linux sources :D
!!tell 12698271 no

4:15 PM
(need one more for "probably not")

Bob
@allquixotic well, of course - but I'd still like to know why they're listed :P

built-in WiFi radio on the CPU die is the kind of thing a mobile SoC would do
that answer is absolutely useless from a technical perspective -_-
O_O so your wifi card can connect to a downstream AP and operate as an access point... and push Intel WiDi... all at once? what could possibly go wrong?
I seriously don't understand how all these standards based on 2.4 GHz WiFi have cropped up, flying in the face of the wide recognition that, even before all this extra junk, 2.4 GHz was ridiculously cluttered... I guess the decision-makers only ever test this stuff in hermetically sealed clean rooms surrounded by a Faraday cage
it's almost an accepted consumer expectation these days that if you try something wireless, it just won't work, and you'll have no clue why or how to begin troubleshooting

Bob
@allquixotic but... why is that listed as a CPU feature?

@Bob because of the Centrino 2 blah blah, which is probably a feature of the chipset moreso than the CPU, but they can throw more marketing terms into the product sheet for the CPU because why not

Bob
@allquixotic it sounds like it's a feature of the wifi adapter

4:24 PM
@Bob yeah, but your CPU supports it :D meaning, it can run the x86 software drivers you install that enable the My WiFi functionality :D
don't you see? it's required to list on a CPU product sheet, every single piece of software that CPU can execute :D
new Intel Core i7 4770A CPUs execute **A**dobe products! :D

Bob

!!tell 12698536 yes

I think have the same one :D

Bob
Shipping to Australia: $37.80
ffs

4:27 PM
@Bob at least it's cheaper than sending 1 GiB of SMS in Australia

Bob
Oh wait, doesn't ship here
whythefuckdoyouletmeadditAmazon

rage comic: AMAZON // Y U NO SHIP TO AUSTRALIA???

Bob
@allquixotic this isn't shipped by them

!!ragecomic

@allquixotic That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

4:28 PM
!!memegenerator

Bob
but they seriously need a 'ships to X' filter

@Bob How far would you need to drive to get one locally?
is there anywhere in Oceania that would actually carry them?

Bob
and only $8.38 :D
@allquixotic not that I know of :\

4:30 PM
wow

Bob
see, it's perfectly possible to ship here in two weeks for <$10
come on, this is a card smaller than the palm of my hand
fucking companies gouging on shipping price

Bob
you could chuck it in an envelope and send it by standard post...

and yet Amazon is talking about sending out delivery UFOs drones in the US, so if I paid $20 extra I could get it delivered within half hour
(not any time soon, but maybe this decade)

Bob
sounds promising :D
or not :\
> This device doesn't work on a HP Pavilion DV6 and a HP Pavilion DV7.

Bob
XD
exact same card? :D

@Bob why would it not work on those specific models?

Bob
I might get the 6300, actually

@Bob yeppers

Bob
@allquixotic not sure
I think it has something to do with the BIOS version
I think that's where they store their whitelist
but there's no official word
because fuck HP

4:36 PM
@Bob wait, whitelist? they only let you use specific wifi adapters with their laptops?

Bob
:
@allquixotic yes
...
> Check the BIOS mod websites. You may be able to get a modified BIOS that suports the WIFIO module if you are willing to forgo your notebook's warranty to try to use the WIFI module.

that would make me request a refund on my laptop

Bob
you know something is fucked up when you need to install a custom BIOS just to use a different wifi card

they are probably worried about regulatory compliance
honestly

Bob
@allquixotic IIRC Lenovo does it too

4:38 PM
@Bob but Lenovo lets you do Intel chips at least
Ralink is just ugh

Bob
@allquixotic HP has support for SOME Intel chips

5:28 PM
Aye my oldie one and first decent console...

Ash
5:40 PM
@Psycogeek you changed your gravatar.Why ??The other one was way too cool.

@ash Obviously, so you wouldn't recognize him ;)

now he's Stealtygeek ;-)
@Hennes how is job with Philips?

5:56 PM
I finally started my first production product conversion.
Which took some pushing from my side.

@allquixotic Hi there. Not sure I like the chat format, but I'll give it a go. What is your recommendation for a cheap linux based box with SSD, wifi, and HDMI. Say in the $100 to $200 range? Thanks.

Meh, not enough information to make any sane choice.
Cheap linux gaming? Office work? Storing movies? ... ?

@Hennes: there is more info on superuser.com/q/689704/201847, but I was told it's off-topic there and redirected here.

Product recommendation on the main site is indeed off topic.
And I just got home and logged in here, so I missed the previous parts

6:00 PM
@PierreD Intel NUC is what I'd recommend
!!wiki "Next Unit of Computing"

Introduction and concept Next Unit of Computing (NUC) is a small form factor PC designed by Intel. Its first generation is based on the Sandy Bridge Celeron CPU. Its second generation CPU is based on the Ivy Bridge Core i3 and Core i5 processors. Its third generation is based on the Haswell architecture. Its motherboard measures 4 x 4 inches (10.16 Ɨ 10.16 cm). The kits consist of the board, in a case with a fan, an external power supply and VESA mounting plate. Models These tables show some of the key differences between the models of the Intel NUC. First generation (Sandy Br...

Cool, thanks guys.

NUC refers to a general form factor of product released by Intel which contains a laptop-grade processor, integrated graphics (which are quite good these days!), a mini-PCIE WiFi card (sold separately), and either a 2.5" SSD or an mSATA SSD, depending on the model
the latest gen ones sell for around $300 not including RAM, SSD and WiFi (which will add about another $100), which is a little past your budget, but you can get a Sandy Bridge era one for closer to your price point

@allquixotic Android TV small box computer is stronger?

@Boris_yo I don't... think.. so...

6:03 PM
I was looking at some of the examples on raymii.org/s/articles/Small_Linux_PCs.html A bit dated now, but they seem quite reasonable, no?

@PierreD a lot of those are much more cut-down than a NUC -- a NUC is basically a general purpose computer, like a desktop, just in a very small box and consuming very low power -- but the performance level is comparable to what most people have sitting on their desk today, except the graphics performance is a bit weaker for say 3d gaming
a NUC is in a completely different category of hardware than a Raspberri Pi
RPi will take some time to render a webpage; a NUC will render it just as fast as your high-end desktop you quoted in your question

Got it. Ok, thanks. Now I'm off as I have work to do. Thanks again.

I own a NUC and a Cotton Candy so I can speak from a little bit of personal experience as to the degree to which a NUC flat-out destroys those other small "PCs" in that list in your link
HD flash video? streaming music? multitasking? NUC can handle it all, but there will be lag and there will be dropouts and there will be stuttering on something much lower grade

Bob
@allquixotic you're getting a lot of opportunities to push that, lately

@Bob hey, he asked for hardware recommendations D:
honestly when I was reading his question, NUC didn't even come to mind until he mentioned the need to boot fast
my NUC boots Fedora 19 as fast as my Surface Pro boots Windows 8.1
which is to say, just a few seconds longer than it takes to hit the power button to bring my smartphone out of sleep
might have to change my review to 2 stars on the Amazon product page for the NUC :P
I have it up and running and it's pretty nice
I dug in my heels a little about keeping it at 1 star for a while because people were being absolute imbeciles in the comments to my review
fortunately, I seem to have won the internet, because they stopped replying
!!xkcd wrong

@allquixotic I'm confused, you seem to praise the NUC but gave it a 1-star review? Where can I find a link to the review?

@allquixotic any luck with netflix or hulu last night?

@DarthAndroid well, here's the thing. once you get it assembled and overcome the initial confusion (which is fairly likely, IMHO), it's a really nice thing. but if you buy the barebones, you have to trawl forums to get answers to basic questions like "Does this support 2.5" SSDs?"
since no other reviews mentioned that it doesn't support them, I wanted mine to stand out as the only 1 star review and mention these kinds of things
@JimmyHoffa No :( I was too busy and got home too late to try it. and I was asked to do yet more work (for work-work) after I got home :D
the rest of this week is shaping up to be absolutely ludicrous for me in terms of work
and I don't say that lightly

Bob
"Welcome to the new Gmail inbox" ended up in spam :P

@allquixotic AAAhhhh

6:18 PM
@DarthAndroid honestly, if Intel (or someone else) would be willing to assemble you a NUC at a minimal charge (to preserve the good value of the base unit) and sell it to you with zero assembly required, it'd be a 5 star unit
but I'm a technologist, software engineer, security tester, enthusiast, and have assembled many desktops in the past, and I got horribly confused by the product literature on this thing

@allquixotic start acting crazy and they'll slow down while being too scared to take actions (for HR reasons it's best not to take actions against the possibly disabled guy). Every 20 minutes go flip the light switches twice in your cube area, and when people ask just shrug one shoulder and stutter something about the lights were all wrong they're always all wrong!!

I don't want to know what other people with less experience would think
@JimmyHoffa better yet, start scrawling hand-drawn "ZALGO HE COMES" type messages
in blood

@allquixotic Could have asked about the NUCs

D: hehe if they keep trying to overwork you after that they deserve what zalgo brings!

Need the mini-PCIe SSD (and optionally Wifi card), and you need the trilobe (or Mickey Mouse) Laptop power cord, needs SODIMM DDR3 memory

6:21 PM
@CanadianLuke yep, got all of that, but I bought a 2.5" SSD at first and have to return it

@allquixotic hope you're getting some pittance for all the extra work.. though being that you're QA I suspect that's not the case..

I sold a few, that's why I know the caveats! Lol

@JimmyHoffa actually, the extra work is completely unrelated in any way to my day job; it's for another component of the same parent company that I have sort of indirect relation to, and they want me to help with a different skill that I happen to possess
to give you the concept: we have absolute eeeediots in a department that does finance-y stuff, and they've built this huge sprawling model of finance data in Excel in many workbooks and worksheets, and they want to consolidate and cross-check it all to make sure it is all working, so I wrote a program in C# to do it, and I've been running the program, analyzing the results, and sending them lists of things to fix
there is COTS software out there that quite honestly does a wonderful job of what they're trying to do, but they just use Excel only
it's depressing really
I'm very good with finance as well so I have the right mix of talent to help them and understand the meaning of their data
basically I'm doing automated functional testing on their finance model, which is only tangentially related to my day job, in that it's some type of validation/testing

how are apps stored on Android/
what if i want to backup apps?
there is a dircetory where i can find them all, right?
so i only need to copy them to my pc

Bob

6:25 PM
and then copy them back to my Android device...
?
from PC

@CanadianLuke well, just in case you weren't aware of this, Intel is coming out with (supposedly "this year", but 2013 is almost over) new models of the Haswell NUCs that have a model number ending in "H", which are just big enough to contain a 2.5" SSD, and a mounting bay for it

Woohoo!
Still not buying one though :P

the new chassis has the same length and width as the current ones, but the height is bigger

Any company who can't give a freakin' power cord with their product doesn't deserve my business

@CanadianLuke :D

6:27 PM
It's true!
Even all my Android phones included universal power cables

their excuse is that they didn't want to include a cord that would be useless in countries that don't have that wall socket type
poor Intel, they have to support umpteen different countries with different wall socket connectors :(
so instead of bearing the burden of cost of a universal adapter / cord, they give you... NONE! hahahahahaha!

@allquixotic That's all good stuff though, great for your resume and could be opportunistically taken advantage of in the future if you really wanted

@JimmyHoffa yeah :)

@Bob Interesting crazy reading.

I'm hoping for some kind of compensation, but I'm not hopeful... more like wishful :P

6:43 PM
@allquixotic Beware of chlorine trifluoride
> It is also hypergolic with such things as cloth, wood, and test engineers, not to mention asbestos, sand, and water-with which it reacts explosively.

@allquixotic But every other computer I've bought came with the cord for the right country

@JimmyHoffa lol wat

@allquixotic HP doesn't give you the darn usb cable for their printers/scanners... I wonder why

@Braiam to lower their expenses, and because it's a commodity you can find anywhere

@Braiam Because they hate you, I heard them snickering about it out back, they send the rest of us a couple extra USB cables just in case we need them along with our printers and scanners, but they just can't get enough of screwing with you @Braiam.

6:55 PM
@allquixotic somehow I believe @JimmyHoffa

Great, now chlorine trifluoride is in my web history.

@allquixotic BTW, they give us the power cord :P

And you forgot the second gem in that quote:
> If, however, this coat is melted or scrubbed off, and has no chance to reform, the operator is confronted with the problem of coping with a metal-fluorine fire. For dealing with this situation, I have always recommended a good pair of running shoes.

7:16 PM
in which directory can i find apps that are installed in my android device?
is it possible to donwload them to my PC
fromat android device
install new android OS
and then just copy the apps from PC to andoroid
?
and it will work?
i assume that apps are in file format .apk
right?

Paul's family has a long, proud tradition of working in IT. His father ran support for a Stanford computer lab, and his grandfather ā€” a greengrocer ā€” claimed to have seen a UNIVAC one time.

Q: How do I return to the main site from Meta?

gronostajThe redesigned all-new top bar has a Help dropdown menu. There's a Meta item in there. That's a great thing, because now you can access Meta easily. On Meta SuperUser it's changing into What's Meta: How do I return to the main site from Meta (without typing the URL manually)? I can visit m...

guys, at work we got a recent HP500 with ATI that is almost the same than a more ancient HP500 with nVidia that we have, the latter is working perfectly with 3 samsung screens, the 3 via DVI (HP500's have 3 DVI +1HDMI), (1/2)
but with this new ATI one we are struggling since days, to get the 3 screens detected

@NaN "struggling" isn't specific enough to be able to offer anything really except "I'm sorry you're having that problem" -- if you're able to give any sort of detail about what you've tried, maybe we can figure out what's going on.

NaN
only 1DVI and 1 HDMI seems working, so with a DVI-HDMI adapter we get to 2 screen detected, the lower 2 DVI just don't work
(note, we purchased 3 new HP 500 with ATI, and the same thing occur with the 3, so this can't be a hardware defect)

ok so the ATI model is the one that you have now?

NaN
yes

I know what's wrong
you're plugging stuff variously into the motherboard and into the discrete GPU. that won't work.

NaN
8:58 PM
note2: the nVidia's PC have a magic special configuration in BIOS

@allquixotic That should work just fine if he turns on IGP in the bios o.0

NaN
well is there an order to plug them?, the lower 2 DVI ports just don't respond, as if dead..

No, you need to turn on the IGP

@DarthAndroid actually, no.

8:59 PM
from the product link:
> *Integrated video is not available if a graphics card or an Intel processor ending with ā€œPā€ is installed.
and it has a 3350P processor
