3:00 PM
actually, amusingly, I have the same issue

Bob
@Sathya that network is vastly more powerful than yours => it interferes with/'drowns out' your signal to an extent

but it shouldn't matter if they're on distinct channels

Bob
remember, this is a logarithmic scale

oh

only one fairly weak signal is on channel 11

Bob
3:00 PM
that's something like 40 times more powerful, unless I'm reading it wrong o.O

that n/w isn't available now..

Bob
@allquixotic ya, but at the moment it's overlapping
hence "try putting it on channel 11"

@Sathya it might be popping in and out

@allquixotic ok

which might explain your intermittent problems

3:01 PM
@allquixotic suppose it can be replaced. need to check.

Bob
seriously, there's something very wrong with that network :S
@Sathya how far away are you form your router in that screenshot? is it through walls?

@Sathya 5 GHz is much less likely to be interfered with, because things like microwaves, vacuum cleaners, bluetooth, Logitech Unifying, etc. all use 2.4 GHz and not 5 GHz

Bob
could we get a comparison right next to the router? i'm curious :P

@Sathya: I had the very same issue

oh and Miracast

3:03 PM
(though, the AP is unsecured, I could EASILY just turn down their TX power)

basically everyone and their mother is broadcasting signal and noise of varying protocols on 2.4
5 GHz is pretty much just WiFi at this point

Bob
@allquixotic look at that crazy spike in the graph on the right of the screenshot...

@Bob yes, throw 2, 1ft walls. Router is approx 20ft away

@allquixotic: annoyingly most if my n gear dosen't do 5 ghz
even my laptop

Bob
@allquixotic also, far more available channels

3:04 PM
@JourneymanGeek fortunately, the Surface Pro, the Droid Maxx, and my NUC are all dual band :D

Bob
@allquixotic the dual-band chip in my laptop is preventing Win8.1 :(

(my router is dualband however)

Bob
@Sathya look at that graph on the right - what's with all those massive spikes on your network? :(

@Bob: interference
@Sathya: the android version of inssider is MUCH more useful for this sort of thing

Bob
3:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek ya, but from other wifi routers somehow broadcasting dozens of times stronger signals
presumably from further away, too

@JourneymanGeek ah okay
well, moved to Ch 11

(wevo is the korean router I was bitching about the other day)

Bob
also, that new version of inssider looks fancy :P

Bob
I'm still on 2.1.6.1395
> The application is up to date
like hell it is

3:10 PM
@Bob just downloaded yesterday

@Bob kinda like my Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet (Android slate) saying it was up to date when running Gingerbread, despite ICS being available by OTA
had to manually flash it

Bob
eh, it's a whole major version ahead
so much for up to date
they even changed the logo!
it's fairly quiet here

I was gonna say, -25 dBm in sathya's original screenshot seemed highly irregular

like, to get -25 dBm in normal circumstances, you'd have to be physically touching the antenna of the router to the antenna of the wifi chip

Bob
3:17 PM
I operate all three networks at the top of that list... and they're overlapping -_-

@Bob brilliant! :D

lol
I'd spread them out myself

Bob
@allquixotic well, the build of dd-wrt I was running previously was broken in a weird way
so when I finally got 40MHz to work i just stuck with it

(I operate two networks, but they're on either side of... The Dead Zone)

Bob
I'll probably twiddle the channels some other time

3:18 PM
@Bob lol @ network called Marathi

Hi guys, can someone help me with a PSU installation question, or am I in the wrong place?

40 MHz width always turns out badly for me
@Sathya why is that funny?
@ProgrammerGirl you're in the right place, but we're a little busy... as they say in hearthstone, "Busy night! Pull up a chair!"

Bob
@Sathya I have no idea who that is.

dunno, just found it funny to named after a language /scratches head

It's just a quick question about a cable that goes into the GPU, if someone has a quick sec. =)

3:19 PM
@Sathya oh, it's a language? interesting

@ProgrammerGirl: ahh
there's two types of those

@ProgrammerGirl go ahead and ask

also, wrong in reply to

IIRC 6 and 8

@Sathya Information on interacting with me can be found at this page

lolll
don't meta the new person. :-)

:12696849 lol ;) wiki actually

8 pin is usually needed. If it needs more power then plug in the 6 pin @ProgrammerGirl

@ChatBotJohnCavil that;s a lot of commands bub

Bob
@JourneymanGeek uhh... my graphics card only takes the 6 pin ones :P

basically your PSU needs to have the plugs that the video card has holes for

Bob
so-called PCIe power connector

i believe 8-pins are for PCI-E 1.0 cards and 6-pins are for the newer revs

or did I get them confused

3:21 PM
fewer pins, more punch... somehow

Bob
@allquixotic you can get molex => pcie adaptors, I think

@Bob yeah but isn't that a voltage conversion from 5V to 12V? :/
or is it 5V anyway

Bob
@allquixotic molex has both a +12V and +5V
and sometimes a +3.3V

ohh TIL

3:22 PM
@ProgrammerGirl: what was your actual question? ;p

we go off on tangents sometimes

Bob
@allquixotic You do end up drawing more power from a single wire, though

soon we'll be debating electron flow

Great, thx. My GPU has 2 x 6-pin going into it. My PSU has either 2 separate 8-pin-to-6pin, or 1 8-pin-to-2-6-pin...do I use the 2 separate ones, or the single one that has to 6-pins on the end? How can 1 single one handle the same juice as 2 separate ones if the head connecting to the PSU's are the same on both? :(

Bob
so higher losses, inefficient, possible damage to the wire

3:23 PM
ahh.

@ProgrammerGirl the two separate 8-to-6 should work fine

Bob
but in most cases it just works

@ProgrammerGirl: they're connected to the same rail at the PSU
so don't worry about it

So I should use the 2 separate ones then?

Bob
@ProgrammerGirl what's a 8-to-6? o.O
@JourneymanGeek not always

3:23 PM
i've never seen a single 8-pin connector that splits out into two 6-pins

Bob
some PSUs have multiple +12V rails

@Bob it's an 8 with 2 pins that split off :P

Bob
@allquixotic oh, those things
be careful
they might not be a PCIe one

yeah, could be for the mobo :P

My PSU is a Seasonic 860W Platinum (if it helps)

3:24 PM
fully modular, nice
80+, niiiiice

The 2-in-1 cable says "PSU" on one head, and "PCI-E" on the two other heads.

quality brick there

Bob
@ProgrammerGirl that would probably work
though it's normally recommended to get them from different cables
that way you draw less current from a single wire

special features -- "high +12 V output"

Bob
3:25 PM
lower losses, less heating

the 8 pins is at the PSU ?
its not a splitter really, then

seriously unless you're running like dual GTX TITANs, I wouldn't worry about the rail configuration on that high-end PSU

so yeah, I still think its not an issue

just pick one of the two plugs and plug it into your GPU :)
it will work

Bob
@allquixotic again, be careful

3:26 PM
that is a seriously great PSU

Yes, the PSU head has 8 pins (if I look inside, only 7 have metal in them). I'm talking about the 2-in-1 cable.

Bob
there are connectors with the same number of pins with different pinouts
brb searching for a diagram

On the single cables, the 8-pin PSU head only has 6 holes with metal in them...

@Bob the one that goes into the mobo is 8 pins, and both her GPU plugs are 6-pin, so they wouldn't be physically compatible

The GPU head of the cables are all also 8-pin, but I say 6-pin because that's what my GPU needs.

3:27 PM
i think her modular PSU just gave her two different ways to produce 8- or 6-pin PCIE plugs

makes sense tho

makes good sense

Bob
you might have the "6+2 Pin PCI Express (PCIe) Power Cable Connector", a little over halfway down the page

3:27 PM
that PSU can probably support two high-end GPUs in SLI/CF

nearly everything breaks out from the 4 pin connectors on my m12

Bob
confirm by matching up the wire colours and locations...

@Bob meh. if the cable has "PCIE" printed on it as she says it does, no need

All my cables are "black". ALL OF THEM. Doesn't help... :(

Bob
3:28 PM
@ProgrammerGirl O_O

@Bob: thats normal

normal for modular :)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek black heatshrink bundles, sure
but black wires is weird

So basically, the only difference btw the individual cables and the 2-in-1, is that the PSU end of the 2-in-1 has 7 metal holes, and the individual ones have 6. How can just 1 extra metal hole provide twice the juice?

@Bob here's why I don't think she has any possibility of error. the 8-pin motherboard connector is this, and that's the only potential physically compatible connector that would fit in a GPU external power socket... BUT... hers are all 6-pin, so it wouldn't fit at all.
if her GPU had 8-pin PCIE connectors she'd have to "be careful"
as it stands there's basically no way she can go wrong
unless she tries to jam an 8-pin connector (with no 2-pin split-off) onto a 6-pin socket o_O

Bob
3:31 PM
@ProgrammerGirl you split off wires in parallel, which are at the same voltage

@ProgrammerGirl if the individual cables connect separately to the PSU, they could also in theory be using different +12V rails

OK, so should I just use the 2-in-1 to minimize clutter?

Bob
but it's normally recommended to plug the GPU into two separate cables all the way to the PSU to minimise losses in the cable (higher current => higher losses)
personally, I just used two on the same cable

the 2-in-1 could be using the same rail, depending on the layout of the rails as they map to the holes in the modular supply interface

Bob
@allquixotic almost definitely if there's only one extra pin on the PSU side

3:33 PM
the risk being that overloading one rail when you have more than one rail could potentially put undue current through that rail

Both the individual cables and the 2-in-1 have the same 8-pin PSU head, with the difference being an extra pin with metal in the 2-in-1.

so you would need to use a lot more holes in the modular interface for the two separate connectors than the 2-in-1
that's certainly a downside, if you have lots of stuff

Bob
@ProgrammerGirl without tracing wires, it's impossible to be certain what that does

what GPU out of curiosity?

@allquixotic: correct, that's why I'm not sure what to do.
I don't want to fry my GPU or PC, but I also don't want extra cables if I don't need them...
GPU is a Radeon 7950

3:35 PM
I really wouldn't worry about it -- unless you are overclocking and stress testing that in worst case conditions, you aren't going to come near TDP in most cases, and the wires should be built to withstand even that worst case scenario
the 2-in-1 should be fine (*)

Bob
@allquixotic could stress test it and feel the cable
if the cable doesn't feel hot, you're probably fine

I mean, this is a very, very good PSU -- there has to be a lot of margin in that stuff
if this were a cheapie I'd hesitate

Bob
heh
I wuoldn't worry about the PSU side
it's the cable itself I'd be a little more concerned about

@Bob if the cable is manufactured by Seasonic (it'd have to be, to fit in the modular PSU), it's probably just as good as the PSU itself :P
which from the looks of it, is top notch
@ProgrammerGirl I think the verdict is, if you have enough spare holes in the modular interface on the PSU to use the individual cables, it's safer in theory to use the separate cables, but on the other hand, if you need the holes for peripherals, fans, etc, then I see no reasonable reason to be concerned about safety or reliability by using the 2-in-1
they wouldn't have given you a 2-in-1 cable labeled PCIE if they didn't expect you to use it with a gaming graphics card

OK, sounds fair. I have spare holes, so I'll go with the safer bet then.

3:39 PM
and Seasonic doesn't seem like the kind of company to do something really stupid and inadvisable like give the consumer a plug that would catch on fire

If I end up crossfiring in the future and need more holes, I'll use the 2-in-1's...

yeah
btw

@ProgrammerGirl Welcome to the Root Access chat for Super Users! Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help.

:p
our bot likes to welcome people, but he doesn't get to do that very often anymore

It just really threw me off that the ONLY diff btw the 2 was an extra metal connector. Anyway, thanks for all your help, guys. You're awesome! =)

3:43 PM
until today I'd never even heard of Seasonic
that's very odd considering how good the product appears to be
do tell us if you have problems with this PSU; your silence will be interpreted as an implicit endorsement ;-)
usually I expect this type of rugged quality from Corsair, but maybe Seasonic is just as good

I've not used a seasonic, but I've also heard very good things about them

looks like they are a PSU-only shop, but they also happen to sell a gaming keyboard
being a PSU specialist is a pretty nice thing though, shows that they are focused on capturing market share in that area

here's another indicator of quality: here -- $239.99 USD... for a PSU, that's pretty expensive

I like their PSUs myself

3:47 PM
cost != quality always, but it's certainly at least weakly correlated :P
> +12V@83A
never seen a 12V rail that high amperage lol

Bob
@allquixotic some fancy mech-rubberdome hybrid switch :\
that's 1500W...
@allquixotic whatf

@Bob huh? 12*83 = 996

Bob
@allquixotic whoops, must've been a typo somewhere
ok, now I'm on channel 11 + 7
and it actually works

although, if you took all 83 Amps on the 12V rail, that leaves 4 Watts for the rest of the rails :D
that's pretty funny :D I guess it can go a little past 1000W though, wouldn't surprise me

3:52 PM
meow

Bob
video source:

attack cats are the best :D my kitty doesn't attack much of anything anymore
still need to clip out my voice and post-proc the mp3 i recorded on my phone of my cat "meowing" in her unique way like 10 times
hmm, debating whether to waste time at work doing that on a DAW on my phone, or just wait til home
!!should i do work or DAW edit my cat meowing

@allquixotic DAW edit my cat meowing

srsly cavil? i never get the answer i want out of him
anyway. gonna work a bit
lol IE froze... I need xkill for Windows...

Bob
damn it
my longer cat5e cable is dead
@JourneymanGeek Does inSSIDer affect your latency?
whenever I have it open, my latency rises from <1ms to >3000ms

3:59 PM
O.o
