@allquixotic: I think part of the problem is signal transmission over distance
and using ethernet. Its not easy to rip out existing cabling and replacing it with cat 6 or class F

Would Windows Server 2012 be a good choice to build a personal home cloud system?

i just got done telling some guy to make sure he backs up his amiga floppies :-) and they be telling us that XP is obsolete .
how in heck does anyone who writes up a set of rules for thier net that is outlined in 16 pages of stuff amazon.com/gp/help/customer/…, turn around and say text messages are limited to 160 charachters (not words)

sure ATT is all clogged up and it costs them millions of dollers to fix up the mobile, , , but then they turn around and offer up Home services through the same cell towers (so terribly overloaded) to people standing 6 feet from a wire?

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: what is a personal home cloud system?
I'd rather build it on linux unless you have some specific need it meets.

@JourneymanGeek Cloud that is hosted on personal home PC and is used for personal stuff, instead of storing something on public servers like Dropbox or SkyDrive.

3:11 AM
ahh
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: I did it with a raspberry pi and bitorrent sync ;p
but yeah, linux + something like sparkleshare may work well here

if the price of SMS goes any higher it will be called S&Ms

Well what is the difference (in this case) between using WS2012 and Linux?

well, cost in some cases
and a lot of the dropbox replacements work on linux only

define "dropbox replacement"

!!define "dropbox replacement"

3:22 AM
@allquixotic No definition found.

Bob
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute Please stop calling it the 'cloud'.
It's a local file server. Nothing more, nothing less.

Hm

Bob
"Cloud" is a shitty marketing term.

!!define "cloud"

3:30 AM
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute My pocket dictionary just isn't good enough for you.

wut

Then what is cloud?

Cirrus, stratus, what kind we talking here?

@Bob Right, but when you go to Google, "home based cloud" retrieves more results than "home based file server"

Did I answer this completely wrong? I know it's not very detailed. superuser.com/questions/689388/…

3:37 AM
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: you have a client, you have a server. client uploads and downloads files off the server to sync.
bitorrentsync is mostly peer to peer, but effectively works the same way

Bob
I personally prefer SparkleShare

just that anyone can be client or server or both

Bob
SparkleShare works across all three major OSes, and is based on git
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute Have you tried "home based butt"?

3:57 AM
Nope
What I am trying to achieve is using my old PC as a central "server" that all my devices can detect and access and store data on, kind of like "cloud storage" that you see online from Microsoft, Google etc.

@ekaj cripes who knows what he is asking. "it is my device IP" sure and the others are your other devices IPs :-) they all device IPs What device? and if you wanted your IP to be the external IP then have only 1 device? or use a switch instead of a router? or switch the router to not being NAT?
(i am so confused, because it is simple but then its not, but it doesnt have to be, and see now your confused too)

I tried to edit it to what I thought he was asking.. but I kinda guessed. I think he assumes there is a correlation between internal and external IPs?
Some of these questions.. meh

@ekaj or that he thinks there should be a corelation, but then again mabey thier should be :-) but it dont make no differance anyways, because they will sell us one more piece of tech to stuff in there, then sell us something to fix the lag :-)
(comming from a simpleton here)

How do job opportunities for Windows Server compare to those for Linux servers?

Q: lubuntu 13.10 giving error code 10 while installation

BraiamAnyone please help! I downloaded lubuntu 13.10 after waiting for whole night and now on every step its retrning with error code 10!(error code 10 coming after every step) please help what to do. it is saying that installation may fail entirely if i continue!

is that you?

yes
no

why are you asking the question on AskUbuntu as a different SE account?

this account is not mine
its of my sister

okay

i cant chat from my that account
bt m sister can
can you answer my problem?

4:47 AM
@Utkarsh I've never encountered that specific error before, so without knowing exactly which step of the installer you get to, and any other error information it shows, there's really nothing I can do.

no nothing specific but only after the partiton, i get these error
i replace ubuntu 12.04 with lubuntu 13.10

@Utkarsh where? what does it look like? does it pop up in a window? if so, does the window have a title? or does it show up in the console? or does the entire screen turn black and just literally display the message "error code 10" and NOTHING else?

no no, its just warning message
popping up every step after partiton
and also, i press continue anyway option, then i see that a busy cursor is there and it is 0% installed
when i click on "details", i see that it is saying that "no space left" or something like that
@allquixotic can you help now?

@Utkarsh no space left on device... sounds like perhaps you have your partitions wrong

no i just replace 12.04 with 13.10

4:53 AM
if you are trying to replace an Ubuntu 12.04 install with a 13.10, meaning, completely wipe out the 12.04, then you'll need to use the partition editor thing to tell it to delete the old 12.04 partitions
otherwise it might be trying to create your entire system in a tiny little chunk of free space at the end of the drive (a few MBs)

oooh
i forgot that we can also use "something else " option!!
okay i will try
thanks

yes, that option is very useful

and will tell the result

all you really need for a functional system is about 10 - 20 GB for / partition (more if you have a very large hard drive and will be installing lots of programs), a swap partition, and a /home partition
you could optionally have a /boot partition too

i am just 13 and am using linux fpr last 3 months
so i am begineer

4:55 AM
there's no real advantage that I'm aware of to having a separate /boot partition so you could leave that off entirely
it'll put the files in /boot in a directory in / that way

yes
it is also correct
:-)

@Utkarsh: your age is not a concern here ;p

thank god, doggy, you're here... now i can sleep... and you can help him (if you so choose)
night night... meow

Bob
@allquixotic the advantage is having a bootloader independent of the system, if you ever need multiboot

Wish I could speak 2 languages and knew more about Linux at 13..

5:08 AM
lol
I'd rather have a seperate /etc/ and /home/ personally

@JourneymanGeek ...than be able to speak 2 languages and know more about Linux at 13?

no, than keep /boot seperate

also, I've always been bilingual.

wait, separate /etc?!?1

5:10 AM
@allquixotic: yup

this feels wrong... oh, no
no, no, no
that's almost as wrong as having a separate /var.... O_O

thats where all the config files are, its relatively small but if my system goes down, its going to help me get it back up fast

People answer

yes, people also question.

How do job opportunities for Windows Server compare to those for Linux servers?

5:11 AM
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: beats me
I learn stuff cause it interests me

@JourneymanGeek I suppose with GPT it really doesn't matter how many partitions you have, except that there is a certain amount of overhead per filesystem instance... for extremely scalable filesystems like XFS (the default for RHEL7, by the way), you don't need to worry about size, so one filesystem is fine, whereas a bunch of small ones just have more overhead in terms of hash tables etc
ext4 reserves 5% of each filesystem for its data structures -_-

Right, I do too. But at some point, you have to decide which path will lead to a better future.

@allquixotic: you can have as many partitions as you want in an extended file system
and I'm thinking in terms of recovery, not efficiency

@JourneymanGeek I hate extended partitions; that's a hack ;p

I guess in a perfect world I'd have all the things backed up
grumblegrumblewantsanasthatwasnthackedtogetherfromspares

5:13 AM
I don't get into a situation very often where I bork my system so bad that it's unbootable and bork the filesystem so that I can't mount it out of band in a live CD to recover any needed files
not at the same exact instant anyway

lol
I've been getting in that scenario routinely with my raspi

so then having a separate /etc doesn't buy me much

I think its the SD card

oh right, that unreliable thing :P
could also be the card reader

and having a backup of /etc/ would have saved me some time
its the card
I'm probably sticking it in a camera or something

Ahh these things only work in open spaces anyway. what i need is a military grade step-over-shit bot, with rocket vaccume blaster
abcnews.go.com/Technology/… But thats cool, because google just bought the Military robot company. I am sure they will have good intentions, of helping out people . That pay them well, that dont get in the way of the Syndication, and run proper androids
I will make me a real self rolling vaccume, call it singularity, then we shall see something really suck.

Can Windows Server run on a 32-bit machine?

Yes

> Is there a 32bit option for Windows Server 2012?
> There is not. If you need 32-bit, you would need to exercise your downgrade rights via SA to run Windows 2008.

2012 can't though

sigh
So if I want to use Windows Server, I have to use a 5 year old (almost 6 year old) OS?

What do you need server for?
Yeah, but it's still being supported. It's patched and updated frequently.
Think about Windows 7, released about the same time, still updated and patched frequently

6:31 AM
I'm setting up a cloud file server for my home network for my devices. So the one central server that controls all this needs to be capable enough. I was going to install Windows Server 2012 on it, but looks like I can't.
Right, but it's that psychology. If your only option is a 2008 OS, then you might as well go with linux

Windows 7 can handle being a file server

How so?
Other than being just another computer on a home network?

Just share a drive or something, you can map it as a network drive

6:50 AM
hm
this explains a lot ;p
(I've been having issues with this so... its good to know why)

Bleh my dad still uses XP.. need to update him eventually

same here
I hope they fix it tho

Well, he needs a newer computer..

so does mine
but he's averse to upgrading

My dad would like an upgrade, we're getting him a monitor as one of his Christmas gifts.. maybe a tower for his birthday
Small victories =p

6:57 AM
yeah ;p
I'm probably upping his ram, and swapping out his hard disk at some point

I need to buy a new processor myself I think for my mini-itx.. not excited about that

I'd like to get my dad's system imaged
not found anything that fits my needs perfectly yet

What for?

in case the drive goes
I'm a bit concerned about that

Ah, IDE drive?

7:00 AM
naw, sata
if it was IDE, I'd INSIST he upgrade

I could just mail you one =p

Q: Windows encrypted files is readable

Johnny BrobergWhen i encrypt a file and send it trough the network to others computer it is not readable just like it should be. Same if i share it with a memory stick it keeps unreadable for other computers. When i send it to a friend trough Facebook they can read it and the file is no longer green. Why doe...

I... what?

@Bob There is 4G here. The problem is not a lack of offer. It is the outrageous price. You either pay about USD 50 (almost 15% of mimimum wage) for 5GB / month of 3G speed, or there are mobile data plans obviusly aimed at lower class citizens: pay 50 cents per day and use 100 MB per month (or 10MB per day in other carrriers). After that, dial-up speeds ;_____;
On the other hand, there are a couple new (non-mobile) ISP competitors that offer decent speeds for decent prices (50 mbps / 50 USD) but my extreme luck places me outside their reach, despite living in a very central area.

Q: LG W3000H Native Resolution

William 'MindWorX' MariagerI just bought an LG W3000H because of the listed 2560x1600 resolution, however, upon hooking it up, I see it only has a 1280x800 native resolution. The specs for the monitor doesn't mention a lower native resolution. Is this simply a marketing scheme, that they don't even list the native resoluti...

Yet, the guy who answered it with a well written and detailed answer, still only have one upvote from me. :P

@Bob In absolute price, in percentage of minimum wage, or in percentage of population earning minimum wage?
And mobile voice calls are damn expensive, almost a dollar per minute. (we don't earn in dollars, mind you). So most times people get plans that gets you lots of minutes for only a certain carrier. So some people have multiple SIM cards for multiple carriers. That's a reason dual-SIM phones are successful here.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager 1000 eyes 0-0 votes.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager 1000 thighs 0-0 votes.

@Psycogeek Indeed. :P

What's wrong with John's eyes ?

1:46 PM
What's wrong with John's thighs ?

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy absolute, ya. but then I have no idea what the median income there is anyway

thighs are the problem.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager so how does the winders sytem handle the high res? Like before everytime i would increase resolution of the monitor, without increasing size of the monitor, eveything got smaller, which is not a lot of help? How do you set DPI? how did windows parts and pieces scale?

@Bob A 2010 census says half of the population earned USD 161 / month while the national minimum wage was USD 219.
Also a correction: it looks like the national minimum wage nows is USD 291 and not USD 343 as I've been saying.
Makes me feel a tiny bit less worse when I look at my paycheck .____.

Bob
I don't really understand how monthly minimum wage works :\

1:56 PM
@Bob The same as weekly, but measured in months...?

Bob
(and median is more representative anyway)

I don't really know how people in other countries get paid / measured

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy ya, well, we do hourly because you can actually consistently and easily count that
weekly might work as well, but could be more problematic for casual workers, etc..
monthly? you have different numbers of days, and weekdays/weekends...

Here we get a single paycheck at the beginning of the month (usually 5th) with a fixed value, accounting for the month before.

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy again - the concept of a minimum per month is weird to me because you wouldn't work the same amount of time every month
also, hourly minimums help for people working multiple jobs
what defines a "month"?
how is overtime considered?
