Huh. Instead of going proprietary, Nintendo Switch uses USB Type-C for connectivity, with USB Power Delivery for charging. That's rather refreshing.

welp that's good

It's not often that you see Nintendo using modern, standardized technologies of this sort, but the facts speak for themselves.

can you imagine if nintendo released a game that wasn't a remake of one of their 3 games

Bob
@bwDraco It also uses Ultra-Scratchable(TM) screen covers and Cheapo-LCD-What's-A-Dead-Pixel?(R) panels :P

10:19 AM
Having trouble already? :\

Bob
@bwDraco Not me, but apparently there's some QC issues, and the dock scratches the screen easily :S
Oh, and a Nintendo statement that dead pixels are expected and not covered by warranty. Which may or may not be 'industry standard' but it certainly hasn't made people happy.

Something I should worry about?

Apparently, it needs 15V 3A for full charging speed under load.

Bob
@bwDraco Standard 45W charging then
@Boris_yo Eww. If it's switchable graphics... you might as well turn off that Nvidia GPU.
It's about as good as the Intel GPU anyway
Waste of power.
Unless you specifically need it for workstation-ish stuff.
CAD, etc.
Even then... bleh.
GT 520M equivalent. Eww.

@Bob You equate nVidia to built-in Intel? Seriously?

Bob
10:25 AM
@Boris_yo When it's effectively a GT520M? Yes.
There's no universal "Nvidia > Intel"

In a laptop, 'everything' is built in

Bob
The lowest-end (GTx10, GTx20) is barely capable of running a Windows desktop. It's on par with some iGPUs, and worse than others.

@Bob I enabled it purposely. Original motherboard had Intel enabled and it burned out. I could not see anything because there was no fallback way to make nVidia main display card. After shelling $800 on motherboard I was determined to never have Intel as main display card.

Bob
... ... ... ... ... you do realise you have just as much chance of the CPU, or, heck, any random mobo component, randomly failing as you do the iGPU?

Actually I don't remember how much I shelled out but it was 2-3 times cheaper than handing it to incompetent DELL's authorized repair center.

Bob
10:29 AM
Also. Yea. Uh. That laptop class costs under $1k for a brand spanking new one.

@Bob ...yes but less than heated built-in graphic chip. It works harder than other components.

Bob
It's almost never worth attempting a mobo repair or replacement on a laptop.
That dGPU is probably horribly power-inefficient. If anything, it's dumping far more heat into the case than the iGPU probably did.
But then none of the components there are good for any graphics work above light web browsing.

In a laptop, 'everything' is built in
maybe i should say 'intergrated'

@Bob Maybe. I did not replace thermal paste for 2 years too...
@Bob Browsing, watching YouTube, working with Paint.NET is what I mainly do.
Dreaming of Mac Pro though...

It's a Fermi GF119, which is slow as molasses (48 CUDA cores in 1 SM @ 810 MHz). It's not worth the power consumption.

Bob
10:33 AM
@Boris_yo m8. you can forget the Mac Pro (desktop?!) and just grab any off-the-shelf $800 laptop and it'll be worlds ahead...
That's a 6 year old laptop there, with mid-grade parts, and conveniently right at the start of the huge push for power efficiency from the last half decade.

@Boris_yo Bleh, that crappy old PC from 2013?

@Bob No. Laptop. MacBook Pro I think...
@Rahul2001 Tell me how you know?

Bob
@Boris_yo Eh. MBP, any other modern laptop... same-same.

Oct 11 '14 at 18:14, by DragonLord
The third digit indicates the relative size and power of the die: smaller numbers indicate larger, more powerful GPUs. Flagship parts are designated with a 0, performance parts 4, mainstream parts 6, and entry-level parts 7 or higher.
9, as in GF119, is as cheap as it gets.

Bob
If you're going to compare to a 6 year old laptop, anything's better.
My tablet is more powerful.
... my phone might be more powerful

10:35 AM
my watch

@Bob MacBook's OS is faster, browsing is slick and smooth. Less headache than Window's based laptop.

Bob
@bwDraco Yea, either a GT510 or GT520 would be the lowest. This is a GT520(M)

That's why productivity-pressed people and generally business people love it. And warranty... No 3rd party incompetent lab.

Bob
@Boris_yo You'll find, interestingly enough, that if you pay the same amount for a Windows laptop that a MBP costs, they're more or less the same.

@Boris_yo I thought you were talking about the Mac Pro desktop. That was last updated 4 years ago.

Bob
10:36 AM
If you buy bargain basement Windows laptops, of course they'll suck. It's not the OS at fault there.
Heck. You even get NBD on-site service (1-3yr) with Dell's premium ranges.

@Bob How do you distinguish between basement bargains and quality dependable machines?

Bob
@Boris_yo Generally? Anything with a 1366x768 display is right out. Other than that? You look at the range it's in, and you can usually see the build quality.

I have lenovo G560 and back in its days it was strong hardware-wise but crap quality and aesthetics-wise.

Bob
Though in your case that might actually be a cheaper business-class machine. (Vostro?) Which is an interesting case.

@Boris_yo dependable machines usually have an i5 or higher, 8 gigs of ram or higher, and an SSD.
@Bob Better, usually

Bob
10:38 AM
@Rahul2001 Nope.
I've found absolute BS with an i7 and 8GB of RAM for $800
Build quality is shit, display is shit, battery life is shit.

@Bob I guess buying from online is not a good idea when trying to get a taste of quality...

Bob
@Boris_yo Eh, it goes both ways. There's stuff that looks good on the surface (in-store) but isn't so great in reality.

I personally hate buying laptops :/

@Bob Hm, that's what we go by here in India anyway. That, or price. Don't have a lot of choice here
My dream thinkpad isn't available here :(

Bob
Rule of thumb is if it costs $2k+ it's probably decent.
If it costs under $1k it's probably shit.
If it's in between... case-by-case.

10:40 AM
That works, I guess. Keep in mind that prices vary by country though.

Bob
The main good thing about MBP, unless you're tied to Apple, is that it's fairly consistent. In that they (Apple) don't really make the terrible cheap ranges other manufacturers do.

I got my y50 significantly cheaper than you would get it for in the US because, well, India.

Bob
@Boris_yo Generally you can see the different ranges... with Dell, XPS is good and Inspiron bad. With HP, nothing Envy is good and Pavilion bad. etc.
But there's good and bad specific models in each range.
Reviews help. Videos help.

Latitude here.

@Rahul2001 i5 with 8GBs RAM and SSD here.

Never used a latitude. YouTube is your friend

10:48 AM
Jul 25 '16 at 1:16, by cat
Heck I wonder if a software renderer would be faster on a modern CPU
GF119 vs llvmpipe?

@Bob Indeed, it's not just powerful hardware. Mine is quality from components and materials perspective. Hmm now if I could buy new CPU, new MB and upgrade my Latitude... Stupid but I would love the experience.
@djsmiley2k Must be some kind of laptop-buyfobia?
@Rahul2001 I think it should be the other way. You should look for Latitude on YouTube.

Bob
@Boris_yo Yea, usually the business class is better than home in build quality. But not all Latitudes are made alike.

32
A: How do I show my wounds to Robbie?

Swagmaster420boiiiiTake your clothes off, my dude.

Bob
@Boris_yo Maybe your biggest problem is the CPU? It's about on par with a m3-6Y30, which is rather low-power.

I have an even slower card, a GT 220 (Tesla GT216, 48 CUDA core).

Bob
10:54 AM
It is 6 years old :P

I have an even slower card, a GT 220 (Tesla GT216, 48 CUDA cores). That's outright ancient; any recent IGP will outperform it.

Bob
Could also be cause you have a lot of junk installed on such an old system.
@bwDraco ...I have a 9xxx here somewhere :P
Can't even remember which one

Back when I had Intel GPU chip burned...

lol. Spam on Super User is deleted in in < 20s. Thanks Smokey! ;p

@Bob You might have a point with nVidia increased heat secretion. I noticed it works harder since I connected external monitor. Laptop's screen and external monitor put some burden on it.

10:58 AM
...well, maybe not. Intel HD Graphics 510 is a tiny bit slower.

Bob
@bwDraco ? that should be HD 3000
510 is ULV SKylake
@Boris_yo IMO, using the iGPU shouldn't be a problem at all. I've never heard of that 'burning' a CPU before. But YMMV.

I'm talking about recent IGPs.

Bob
It will definitely use less power and should produce less heat overall.
@bwDraco Ah. WE CROSSED THE STREAMS!!! :(

@JourneymanGeek Heard about Bluedio T2S? To me its some unfamiliar brand on AliExpress.

@Boris_yo er. No?
I go for the better known obscure brands.

11:05 AM
@Bob No you do. If there was external lever to fallback or between between GPUs I would not need to replace MB. Here I can't even see BIOS while running DELL's proprietary extended test.
@JourneymanGeek How can obscure brand be better known?
Obscure is very specific...

@Boris_yo Obscure is rather obscure.
By definition

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Hi. I was looking for you. There is this question in which I feel the OP is providing misinformation. superuser.com/questions/1186478/…. What do you think?

is there an upgrade path from VS2015CE to VS2017?

Bob
@Burgi VS versions have always installed side by side

@FleetCommand eh, best place to correct misinformation is in an answer.

user226528
11:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek Obviously. The question is "What are we missing?"

and that belongs in carefully written comments

user226528
And I have been told the best place to ask "What are we missing?" is the chat room.

@FleetCommand There are other ways of running as admin without right clicking, no?

@FleetCommand you can see a exe path in the OPs screenshot, can you not rightclick on that and choose "run as administrator"?

user226528
For Windows Store apps? I doubt it.

11:14 AM
@FleetCommand the OP's problem is not always what he thinks he is
also, why does an app need to run as admin?

user226528
Again, for Windows Apps, no reason. It doesn't.

user226528
I already runs sandboxed. Can't be admin.

Are store apps in the path? Can you run them from a cmd shell?

user226528
No. Impossible.

And that would be a more constructive comment than "is this question fake?"
AH!
" It works really well for everything accept applications running as administrators."
Which makes sense

user226528
11:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek To me, it does not. Clipboard is the one and only globally accessible unrestricted resource.

@FleetCommand if you have ditto, trying to replicate the problem would be a first step

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Did. Failed.

user226528
Doesn't reproduce.

@Bob ugh! thanks!
@FleetCommand you seem extremely grumpy about this question...

user226528
11:24 AM
@Burgi I "seem" grumpy? As in you can see me? ;)

i can see everyone
and you should stop doing that... ;)

user226528
@Burgi Anyway, I am intrigued. Not grumpy. Intrigued.

fair enough

user226528
I mean someone comes here asking for help and lies to us about his problem. Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

user226528
So, that makes me ask myself (and Journeyman Geek): What are we missing?

11:27 AM
Very hard to judge sound quality when there are almost 1700 feedbacks from majority of non-audiophilles touting headphones...
@Burgi I see you... (Avatar)

@FleetCommand I don't assume he lies to start with.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Hmmm... Interesting. What do you assume then?

That people see different parts of a problem

They don't lie, they just don't tell the whole truth
@Boris_yo Actually i just hate spending money :D

11:55 AM
I would rather listen to Dragon Lord talk endlessly about rysen, than to watch a youtube of how to draw your eyebrows on your forehead :-)
choices choices

@Psycogeek cringe

that looks like a guy

You know

@tereško i thought that but didn't say anything, you might want to reconsider the statement...

you could watch something else

12:05 PM
xD

@Burgi it's hard to tell these days
on a completely unrelated topic:

user226528
That made up error message is full of grammatical errors... ;)

user226528
???

is that faux carbon fibre?

user226528
12:14 PM
Unrelated to this: I think we should make commenting with downvotes mandatory. Or at least display the name of the people who downvote, so that we can go ask them.

@FleetCommand You can propose it on meta.se if you like. I guarantee the proposal will be shot down in flames.

@FleetCommand voting is anonymous, and most would like it to remain that way. Imagine having to give a justification everytime you voted, man, I would not like that.

user226528
@Rahul2001 Okay. How do you like this: You spend two hours research and then writing an answer and then BAM! Someone downvotes you.

Q: Encouraging people to explain downvotes

ChrisFI used to get "upset" (though that is too strong a term) when I got downvoted without comment. If my answer isn't good enough then I'd like to know why. Not only does it improve the answer for the OP but it improves my knowledge too. Where the down-vote has been explained I've found it useful & ...

@FleetCommand Eh, if you really write a good answer, usually there a helluva lot more upvotes than downvotes. One or two doesn't matter.

user226528
12:19 PM
@Rahul2001 When the first vote you get is a downvote, you never get upvotes.

@FleetCommand Can you give an example?

user226528
@DavidPostill An example of what?

@FleetCommand Experience tells me otherwise.

@FleetCommand One of your answers where you have 1 downvote and 0 upvotes.

Q: Driving in the UK for the the first time - rules & to-dos that are different to India

Satej SI'm planning on renting a car in the UK for my trip through London, York, Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland. Having driven in Mumbai, India, I understand there must be things I should keep in mind, while driving in the UK. I just read about an autonomous car being "accused" of incorrectly ov...

Oh god.
I've... seen videos... of traffic in India. I've also experienced traffic in China. If the UK is anything like AU... this smells like far too much for just a SE question.

@Bob Traffic in India has improved greatly recently

Bob
@Rahul2001 How so? Last I checked it was a completely different driving style. Some of those answers seem to match what I remember.
How you'd expect other drivers to act and react makes a big difference in this case :\

@Rahul2001 "India" is a big country.
We use horns pretty liberally.

user226528
@DavidPostill Are you tracking down the perpetrator with a drone?

user226528
;)

12:27 PM
@jokerdino Fair enough
Eh, conditions have improved in Delhi anyway. People used to drive really crappily

@Bob replacement delivered

@JourneymanGeek ...to?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Nice. Now, the real question: does it work? :P

@Bob seems to
@Rahul2001 wrong question I suspect

No one follows the lanes in highways :/

12:29 PM
@jokerdino True

Bob
^ That's a major difference already...

@Bob Not saying that there aren't many differences, just saying that traffic conditions have improved recently (from a cyclist's point of view)

@Bob battery seems flat

Bob
@Rahul2001 The problem here is that if you drive in the UK like you would in India, you're gonna end up in (causing) a lot of accidents. The reverse is true too.

@FleetCommand It doesn't help that you are answering a bad question. It is not clear exactly what the OPs problem is. For what it's worth I have no problem setting the date backwards and writing to a file.

12:31 PM
But I would say it's harder to drive in India because no one follows the rules :D

Bob
About the only similarities are you're (probably) in a car, and driving on the left side.

@Bob Yes

Bob
e.g. use the horn here and you'll probably either scare someone or piss them off

We are only vaguely driving in the left side. If there is no separator and left side is jammed, we probably will use the right side.
3

Bob
I swear in China the horn is used more than the brakes... videos of India suggest the horn is used even more often

user226528
12:32 PM
@DavidPostill Me neither. At least not on this computer. Storage devices with no much backlog and adequate speed shouldn't have this problem.

Bob
@jokerdino lol

@jokerdino lmao

@Bob if I can work out how to protect the screen....
@Bob in india the horn is a sign of endearment

The horn is a means of communication... for everything.

"Please brother GET THE **** OFF MY ROAD! DO THE NEEDFUL ALREADY! YOU *******"

12:34 PM
And also flashing lights.

XD

Bob
I remember watching a coach (while on the coach) squeeze between two lanes of traffic. Out of six lanes. On a three lane road.
Still no idea how that worked...

o.O
Sounds like bulldozer.

hm
Why the hell does a smartwatch need a FTP server?

@Bob In IN or AU?

Bob
12:38 PM
@DavidPostill CH
Never been to IN
@JourneymanGeek Firmware updates, maybe

@Bob its an app, in the app store

Bob
uhm.
@JourneymanGeek "My First Program"? I guess
Someone wanted a way to get music onto their watch?

@Bob well, they do have a pretty interesting developer program
@Bob I think you can do that over BT

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I last used BT file transfer in 2012. There's a reason I haven't tried it since :P

(Yes, the ticwatch has its own app store)

12:47 PM
I've driven in the UK, Spain and Greece

Bob
@JourneymanGeek "over the internet" "on the same network" well, I guess technically...

Greece had the worst traffic and general disregard for everyones safety. traffic lights are there just to change colour

I've driven in the UK, NL, GR, FR, CH, DE, NZ, US and probably a bunch of others I can't remember, but not IN

Spain was good, the only issue there was the confused brits driving on the wrong side of the road

@jokerdino 40 Tonne coach, bulldozer, there isn't much difference tbh

12:50 PM
DE was the worst for me. Seeing idiots driving at racing track speeds when it wasn't appropriate. And bodies from an accident lying on the motorway ...

lovely

@DavidPostill teamleader once saw someone's arm in a bush on the way in here

@Bob I feel mixed on it

just their arm

Its a lovely piece of kit

@DavidPostill faireynuff

Question is very unclear though - at least I don't understand exactly what he is asking.

Bob
12:59 PM
@DavidPostill I do understand it :P

@Bob Bows to @Bob's superior understanding :)
@Bob His example link doesn't redirect anywhere for me. It stays on the home page.

Bob
@DavidPostill Ya. I mentioned that in my comment.
one sec
If you're not tied to the idea of a browser, this is pretty easy to do in typical scripting languages, assuming it's a 3xx redirect. curl once, store the redirect target from the response, and then curl in a loop until the response doesn't match the stored one. Then launch the link in a browser. However, I currently do not see any redirects from your example link. — Bob 1 min ago
I was halfway through writing a powershell answer before I noticed :P

Ah. Thanks for the clarification.

Bob
@DavidPostill I think he's thinking of the "reload every X secs" extensions but they only reload the current page - he wants to reload the pre-redirect page.

@Bob i licked the link clicked and got just the normal 'homepage'

this is a fact.
@Bob it maybe really bad site design

While I wish this was a troll, I'm pretty sure it's not. Sadly I feel that this sort of question (with the answers pretty much all saying "education") shows a need for parents to educate themselves first. Fortunately the fact that it's a question asking on here makes it appear that the self-education might actually be happening. To paraphrase Terry Pratchett - "You can't give a sword to a child!" "IT'S EDUCATIONAL." "But they might cut themselves!" "THEN THAT WOULD BE A VERY IMPORTANT LESSON." — Rycochet 22 hours ago

too damned true.
I learnt a healthy respect from getting shocked, and looking like a make up brush for a bit. My poor dignity.

yup
my hands are covered in scars from doing things I shouldn't have
I didn't die tho.
my daughter (she's 3) has a little tool kit for kids, really nice actually, big wooden bolts, screws, etc
the hammer is solid wood and hurts if you hit your thumb tho

lots of adults use mallets

Bob
I think I've done more damage to my fingers with a rubber mallet than any metal hammer

we did woodwork at school

Bob
it's great for percussive maintenance though
@Burgi ditto
high school woodwork and metalwork classes... compulsory for a few years then specialised electives
lots of useful knowledge (and mildly dangerous tools)

i can't imagine not teaching my child how to bang nails into bits of wood

Bob
1:40 PM
the blunt lathe bits might've been the most dangerous

yah me too

we weren't allowed to use the lathes without a teacher present

we had bits of metal flying accross the room at subsonic speeds
wooo

Bob
butcher band saws were teacher-only :P

@Burgi using a lathe's on my bucket list.
We did some woodworking, but I've done much dumber things past my teens ;p

Bob
1:42 PM
lathes are fine with a good grip and sharp bits
blunt tools are always the most dangerous

we built treehouses all the time
i remember my sister trying to take the dog into the treehouse

Bob
the oxy torch taught me quite a bit about how bricks retain heat
and by that I mean OW half an hour later...

Bob
@Burgi how does one build a treehouse anyway?
I don't think any trees here can support one properly
well, not without going a dozen metres up

we had mature beech and old willows in our garden
it was about 3 metres up

Bob
1:46 PM
do you find branches, or just attach them to the trunk?

it was branches

ah
yea that's not gonna work with a giant eucalyptus :P

@Bob you could just pile up some dropbears...

Bob
@OliverSalzburg not enough blood and viscera

you basically find a fork close to the primary trunk, build a sort of square frame thing between the main trunk and the forked branches then nail planks to the frame

@Burgi They way you do git is weird

Bob
lol

1:52 PM

Bob
@Burgi yea uh...primary trunk?
these trees basically split off into a bunch of small branches :P

hey not my fault australia has weird trees

Bob
or grow mostly upwards

i can't solve all the problems

1:57 PM
@Bob In that case you find 3/4 trees close together and build a platform between them. There are special tabs to anchor to the trees.

@DavidPostill that's what they use on that TV show that makes treehouses...

treehouse masters?
or one of the other ones?

Exactly. I like that program

@djsmiley2k Grand Designs

Alas, in england, other than as a kid, the weather isn't good enough generally to spend much time in a treehouse.
