Oh, and a Nintendo statement that dead pixels are expected and not covered by warranty. Which may or may not be 'industry standard' but it certainly hasn't made people happy.

The lowest-end (GTx10, GTx20) is barely capable of running a Windows desktop. It's on par with some iGPUs, and worse than others.

@Bob I enabled it purposely. Original motherboard had Intel enabled and it burned out. I could not see anything because there was no fallback way to make nVidia main display card. After shelling $800 on motherboard I was determined to never have Intel as main display card.

... ... ... ... ... you do realise you have just as much chance of the CPU, or, heck, any random mobo component, randomly failing as you do the iGPU?

Actually I don't remember how much I shelled out but it was 2-3 times cheaper than handing it to incompetent DELL's authorized repair center.

It's almost never worth attempting a mobo repair or replacement on a laptop.

That dGPU is probably horribly power-inefficient. If anything, it's dumping far more heat into the case than the iGPU probably did.

But then none of the components there are good for any graphics work above light web browsing.

It's a Fermi GF119, which is slow as molasses (48 CUDA cores in 1 SM @ 810 MHz). It's not worth the power consumption.

That's a 6 year old laptop there, with mid-grade parts, and conveniently right at the start of the huge push for power efficiency from the last half decade.

The third digit indicates the relative size and power of the die: smaller numbers indicate larger, more powerful GPUs. Flagship parts are designated with a 0, performance parts 4, mainstream parts 6, and entry-level parts 7 or higher.

9, as in GF119, is as cheap as it gets.

If you're going to compare to a 6 year old laptop, anything's better.

My tablet is more powerful.

If you buy bargain basement Windows laptops, of course they'll suck. It's not the OS at fault there.

Heck. You even get NBD on-site service (1-3yr) with Dell's premium ranges.

@Boris_yo Generally? Anything with a 1366x768 display is right out. Other than that? You look at the range it's in, and you can usually see the build quality.

I have lenovo G560 and back in its days it was strong hardware-wise but crap quality and aesthetics-wise.

Though in your case that might actually be a cheaper business-class machine. (Vostro?) Which is an interesting case.

@Boris_yo dependable machines usually have an i5 or higher, 8 gigs of ram or higher, and an SSD.

That works, I guess. Keep in mind that prices vary by country though.

The main good thing about MBP, unless you're tied to Apple, is that it's fairly consistent. In that they (Apple) don't really make the terrible cheap ranges other manufacturers do.

I got my y50 significantly cheaper than you would get it for in the US because, well, India.

@Boris_yo Generally you can see the different ranges... with Dell, XPS is good and Inspiron bad. With HP, ~~nothing~~ Envy is good and Pavilion bad. etc.

But there's good and bad specific models in each range.

Reviews help. Videos help.

If you're not tied to the idea of a browser, this is pretty easy to do in typical scripting languages, assuming it's a 3xx redirect. curl once, store the redirect target from the response, and then curl in a loop until the response doesn't match the stored one. Then launch the link in a browser. However, I currently do not see any redirects from your example link. — Bob 1 min ago
