I generally have Java and Flash installed but ask-to-enable on Firefox.

Does https://example.com:80 work? Or will it cause problems. The specific combination of https and port 80...

Bob
@bwDraco Which means you're using 32-bit Firefox.

@Bob what do you mean

Oh, bizzare question. Changing correct UK spelling to american spelling is frowned upon

Bob
12:07 AM
Because 64-bit has only allowed Flash and no other NPAPI plugins for ... since it was officially released.

is changing the continental comma decimal to the standard decimal point the same?

@Bob ...or that's what I used to do.

Bob
@MichaelFrank It's technically valid, but rather weird. It'll just attempt a TLS negotiation on port 80.

@JourneymanGeek Like changing 12.345,67 to 12,345.67?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek To the metas!

12:08 AM
yup

Hmm. My first thought is that decimal-as-thousands-separator looks way weirder to me than the non-US spellings of words, but I'd have to think more before making a judgment

Bob

A: Should the network use thousands separators in numbers?

ArjanYes, commas please. The primary disadvantage is that it makes them harder to read for folks who use different languages or locales, where commas are actually decimals [...] I don't see how getting people understand such formatting can do any harm, as surely such formatting is not unique to ...

Might need an ambiguity rule. 1,200... is it one thousand, two hundred or one point two?

I didn't realise people used the 'decimal' point that way

Hmm, do any English-speaking people groups use the comma as a decimal point?

12:15 AM
Not as far as I know.

The sites (except the localized/language ones) are English, so we wouldn't allow Spanish text, and numbers in Chinese characters should be Arabic-ified, so maybe that's a reason to comma-as-separator-ify numbers
(my Internet is currently dropping packets and generally being slow, so apologies if I duplicate messages)

@Bob I have a user that is having trouble getting to part of a site, and that's the way the URL is laid out in the HTML. For myself, and any other user it's just https://example.com. So I'm trying to work out why her computer is showing her :80

Bob
@MichaelFrank firewall? filter? antivirus?
browser addon?

Compromise? Convert all numbers to unary
Separators for none!

Bob
!! s/n//

12:22 AM
@Bob Separators for one! (source)

@Bob Ohoho, I see what you did there

@Bob Yea, perhaps. It is happening in IE and Firefox. Although they should be using the standard suite of those things.

Holy crap Telstra has an insane amount of spectrum

Bob
@TOWMN Hm? Ya. Insane how? :P

@Bob well only a single network in the UK has more than one contiguous 20Mhz block of spectrum. Telstra had more than all of them put together.

Bob
12:31 AM
@TOWMN Get any good speeds? :P

@Bob about 40-80mbps on one band. Ran out data before I could test multiband CA

@Bob Figured it out. if you hit the site with www. in the URL, it serves you the :80 links.

Bob
@TOWMN Yea, speed tests eat data :(
@MichaelFrank fail.

Yea
But that's a much easier problem to communicate to the devs that whatever else it could've been.

12:52 AM
what is the point of the new 3310?
no 3G so you can't even do picture messages

@Burgi Nothing but the existance of a 3310.
Its like the new WRTs, only lamer

Bob
@Burgi no 3G, so you can't even do network
(Telstra turned off 2G/GSM. Optus and Vodafone will have it off by the end of 2017. No more 2G in AU!)

i think the UK still has 2G
@TOWMN will be able to confirm probably

@Burgi yup, all networks still have full 2G infrastructure. Some have just upgrade it to brand new stuff. Except 3 who never had 2G to begin with

right bed
nn all

1:20 AM
20,000 messages moved to Trash

@ThatBrazilianGuy By Shor, what's going on?

@bwDraco Pretty sure it's a ruse.

In other news, what happens to your VPN software when the VPN software tries to update itself while you're connected to the VPN...?

1:22 AM
@TOWMN AT&T has already shut down 2G service here. If I set my phone to 2G only mode, I get no service at all, not even the ability to make voice calls.

@MichaelFrank Probably a short disconnection, I suppose.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Yea, normally. For this user, it disconnected her from the VPN, uninstalled the old version, and then couldn't install the new VPN software. :|

Some rackmounts approach 80 dBA. Even if you sleep far from the server, expect to get a noise violation ticket if you're running it in an apartment and don't spend some time soundproofing it.

Bob
One does not simply run a rackmount in an apartment

This kinda came up. Can a rackmount server actually be loud enough to risk a noise complaint?

1:34 AM
I am under the impression that some are really loud, though I have never been in the same room as them for longer than a few minutes

Bob
well, you see, most people would knock on your door and ask you what's going on/to turn it down. most wouldn't jump straight to 'noise complaint'...

eh, One rack, could be
but its going to affect you more than the neighbours
and your housemates will likely smother you in your sleep, then turn off everything

Let's say I'm running it in a separate, closed room which won't bother me or others. However, I kinda feel the noise will still leak into neighboring units...

@bwDraco depends a lot on insulation -- we have a bunch of ridiculously noisy 2U and 3U servers at work in a miniature datacenter (it's the size that a typical bathroom + shower would be, plus maybe 20% longer on two sides of the rectangle) and you can't hear a single thing when you're outside the room with the door closed
the higher pitched the sound, though, the less mass it takes to absorb the sound... by contrast, very low frequency vibrations will go right through the wall

@bwDraco I think we're missing the elephant in the room
why do you need an entire server rack with proper servers in an apartment?

Bob
1:39 AM
@allquixotic have you ever used CDO? :P

@Bob ?

and you'd need to maintain temperatures (so good insulation and excellent cooling)...

Bob
@allquixotic old (c. 2004 last release) MS COM API for sending emails. Used from VB6, maybe VBScript, VBA...
Just curious if you've ever used it
> The CDO Library requires installation of MAPI and of an automation controller. An automation controller is an application that supports Automation, such as the following Microsoft applications:

Microsoft® Visual Basic® 3.0 or later
Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications
Microsoft® Access version 2.0 or later
Microsoft® Excel version 5.0 or later
Microsoft® Project version 4.0 or later
Microsoft Visual C++ version 1.5 or later

4:52 AM
Hey @Bob, do you know anywhere that I could buy a bottle of isopropyl alcohol or acetone on the high street? Like a electronics or hobby chain?

mew
@TOWMN what cha need it for? :P

roar
Is LinkedIn Premium Career ($300/yr) worth it?
(I must pay this cost out of pocket; it will not be reimbursed by my parents. The funds are there, but I kinda feel there are better ways to invest $300.)

@allquixotic repairing a phone screen

5:08 AM
...well maybe not. I have not yet fully utilized what it has to offer even at the Basic level.
There is much for me to learn, and I am still rather at a loss here.
I don't feel like I can do things like this independently. I'll probably discuss this in more detail at my next counselor session.

Bob
@TOWMN Look for a Jaycar
@TOWMN You're still in melb right?

@bwDraco that's a lot of money.
@TOWMN again?

Bob
@TOWMN Bunnings and Officeworks will have it too officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/…
Actually Bunnings might be the cheaper and easier to find choice :P
Or you can go to a Chemist Warehouse and get ethanol wipes. they tend to work well enough for screen cleaning
(removed)

5:26 AM
lol

Bob
on a phone it actually looks the same too!

Yup. Not greyed out on mobile.

@Bob oh sweet, thanks. There's one just round the corner

(remooed)

Bob
5:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek You hoof to stop doing this.

cud I?

Bob
o.O

I wonder if @TOWMN still blocks me...

@Bob there's an office works nearer my hostel so that be my next choice

Bob
5:47 AM
@TOWMN Jaycar will almost definitely have it. Some OWs might not, though they should at least have a screen/CD cleaning kit...
Oh, Daiso is another possibility, but good luck finding anything in there :P
If you've never been to a Daiso before, go take a look around one sometime
I believe @JourneymanGeek would agree :P

One does not go to daiso to find specific things.
One goes to daiso to find daiso.

@Bob you are a legend I love you
They had everything I needed and the cable I spent days hunting for in Thailand and I wasn't even looking for it

@TOWMN we know know where you are. *Prepares drone*
@Bob VS installs iTunes?

Bob
@TOWMN ohshit I actually forgot to check Jaycar when looking at DP cables
how much was it?

Just walked past a Harry Norman computers and electrical.

Bob
6:01 AM
lol

Probably shouldn't go in there if I don't want my credit card canceled

Bob
6:13 AM
so, it's been like that for 5 mins
I haven't even installed any updates... urk

morning folks

8:54 AM
@Psycogeek Why would someone remove eyebrows just to draw new ones? Somebody has a lot of time on their hands...
@djsmiley2k Hoarding money is not good. Money is energy and energy likes to flow. In and out.

Bob

morning
@Bob i had an old boss that was as disorganised as that

9:13 AM
@Bob GM of the company I work for has a desktop like that.
I swear it's an upper management thing...

It's also a time thing
It's easier to just buy a new laptop every other month than to sort all that shit :P

The guys in accounting also just can't understand how you can live without sorting all your emails from your inbox into the proper folders
But they also don't receive 300 emails every day :P

i have automatic filters :O

Yea, I automate a bunch of generated emails that come in.

9:20 AM
@djsmiley2k So do I :P
There's only so much you can automate and you actually have to read these emails anyway

yah true

Not that I get that many emails, but I understand the mindset of those people

9:33 AM
is a "Sophos SG 210" a firewall?

hmmm...

Ugh, I hate dealing with our legacy product so. much. O___o Now there is some weird issue and I need to set up an entire test environment which I hadn't planned for today :P
And it's all because of an issue we worked really hard to not have in the new product. So this is additionally frustrating :P

9:53 AM
@OliverSalzburg ... read?

@JourneymanGeek And no cheating by only reading the subject!

It's also fascinating how the quality of the email client decreases the more import email gets
Like, I was wielding dozens of account back in the day. All perfectly fine in Thunderbird
If you only make Outlook so much as look at a mailbox, it shits its pants
And that godforsaken IBM shit?
Whatsitcalled?
Lotus!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek mech keyboard & 2004 P4 guy picked up a c2d out of a dumpster lol

@Bob Hey! I'm supposed to be the only one stealing content from reddit and posting it here! :P

10:02 AM
@Bob ._.
as a primary system?

Bob
@Rahul2001 my job now!
@JourneymanGeek no, he literally picked it up today

ah
fun fun
why?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek apparently it looked interesting :P

good reason
c2ds are barely worth picking up, since they're "modern enough" that baseline modern tech exists ;p

is the SG210 better, worse or just totally different to a Cisco RV325?
OMG! brilliant! :D
my minion had ultra hot wings last night called "cry for help"
he's been to the loo about 3 times already and just told us he can't sit down

10:23 AM
hahaha
we went to this place called Monsoon Poon. They do All You Can Eat Firecracker Chicken, first Monday of each month.
We went for a team lunch. Team productivity dropped to near 0% that afternoon.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek think it's a E7600

eh, newer than mine ;)

@Burgi Flagged: Too broad and Primarily Opinion Based :)

10:36 AM
@DavidPostill its beyond my ken :(

11:05 AM
Make sure you aren't highlighting it and then dragging it, you have to highlight it and directly hover over a link, it's all in one stroke.

Wow, that's almost as easy as pressing F12

11:29 AM
@Burgi rofl

12:00 PM
yey
got a hp laptop here which the touchpad seems to not 'exist' D:

12:36 PM
speaking of HP

Q: My 2 months old hp laptop ( hp 15-ay106ne) is suddenly shuts down

eswardevI'm from India. I bought a Hp 15-ay106ne laptop through my uncle from Abu Dubai on 01-01-2017. After a week I noticed that it didn't charge 100%. After 15 days I noticed that it suddenly shuts down when it's charging reaches 15% without any notification about plug-in. After few days it shuts down...

That seems all sorts of dodgy

very

yeah, what kind of an edit is that?

a terrible one

At least the one paragraph original text is better than this oneliner :|

ffs this laptop
it's like they forgot to connect the touchpad back up after the diagnostics
:/

12:59 PM
@Burgi Tried to fix it.

@JourneymanGeek yehas, i mean i've had some good hp laptops in the past, this is deffo not one :D
It feels like someone went 'what's thin? Paper? Yes! lets make it from paper!'
Also windows, wtf.... I reboot, it comes back up 'Windows must reboot'
I didn't even do anything yet!

@djsmiley2k Installing updates?

maybe but it's offline :D
Kinda clever if it is! :P

@jokerdino i just assumed you had more than 2K here, approved and tweaked a little more

@djsmiley2k Sometime a restart is required to finish installing an update because critical files were in use.

1:04 PM
> Further spelling and grammer fixes
O.o

oops
IT NEVER HAPPENED

@DavidPostill yeah, cept I've already rebooted 3 times..

Almost there now!

ah well, we'll never know.
:D

Somebody didn't fix "Abu Dubai" :)

1:08 PM
It'd just be nice if it told you what was requested to reboot.

@DavidPostill Oh wow. Totally read it as Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dahbi and Dubai are cities of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

UAE yeah.

Part of the UAE.
> The constituent emirates are Abu Dhabi (which serves as the capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain.

er
No actually
Abu Dhabi and Dubai are two states that make up the UAE

1:11 PM
Like USA?

Which is a odd, slightly loose federation of small feudal states
who have very amusing rivalries!
Dubai "I will build the world's tallest tower!"

@JourneymanGeek Oops. Correct.

.... Abu Dhabi then buys it and names it after their emir's dear old dad.

@DavidPostill i thought that was wrong but i wasn't sure
still getting weird CDN issues

@Burgi What is actually correct is Abu Dahbi and Dubai are capital cities in different UAEs

1:17 PM
i've lost interest ;)

hmmm
synaptics driver says a newer version is already installed
control panel disagrees :/

@DavidPostill er. You mean "Abu Dhabi and Dubai are capitals of different constituent emirates of the UAE"

Another audit fail. How can this audit question superuser.com/review/close/632716 not be too broad and/or opinion based?
@JourneymanGeek That's what I said, but not as eloquently as you did :)

vtc as piracy and too broad
5 questions in one question basically

1:29 PM
@djsmiley2k Yeah. I VTC too broad and DV. I don't know if that's enough to remove it as an audit.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It's a E7500 with 2 GB of DDR3...

lol. Now I'm getting an audit every couple of reviews :)

Bob
> Module Manufacturing Date: Year: 2011, Week: 23
They were making/selling c2ds in 2011?!

I think that a 2009 processor

i missed a hyphen (word had changed it to a long dash) and the customer is going mental

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, it is.
In 2011 Sandy Bridge was a thing...

welp that's it, i give up on this touchpad

@Bob consumer or business model?

Bob
1:38 PM
@JourneymanGeek consumer, pretty sure
> Acer Veriton X275

> Hi Unnecessarily Grumpy Customer

It was an error in the character encoding, the symbol used was an “em dash” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dash) which doesn’t display properly in HTML without the correct character encoding. I have replaced it with a Hyphen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyphen) which doesn’t need any special encoding. The problem occurred because I had copied the text from a Word document which auto-corrects hyphens to dashes and at first glance the two characters look identical (see the attached image).

guys i'm having a seminar tomorrow on kademlia distributed hash table..there is a thing i didn't understand in it that who are "DHT nodes"?

Bob
@Burgi Uh. wtf are you serving your HTML pages as?
you don't need to encode em dashes if you're serving utf-8
if you're serving anything other than utf-8, well... that's bad
@JourneymanGeek :
> USD780.51 - ‎In stock
that's hilarious
they want $95 for a used one here reboot-it.com.au/…
wow

A: Simple basic explanation of a Distributed Hash Table (DHT)

HenryROk, they're fundamentally a pretty simple idea. A DHT gives you a dictionary-like interface, but the nodes are distributed across the network. The trick with DHTs is that the node that gets to store a particular key is found by hashing that key, so in effect your hash-table buckets are now indepe...

Bob
> Upgrade to Kaspersky Internet Security 2013
what year is it?!

1:42 PM
2017
March even.

Bob
> Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic license
uh. 2009 CPU, 2011 machine, 2007 OS?

@Bob recycling btw

Bob
@djsmiley2k ?

they were coming out as "But don't worry – we won't"

Bob
@Burgi your page encoding is fucked

1:47 PM
its not our server
its shared hosting

how do i stop windows 7 installing the wrong driver, before i can install the right one

it was the only oversight in a flawless deployment

when removing the device requires a restart...

@DavidPostill thank you david for the help..i'll add that answer in my seminar..but there is one thing i'm trying to find out..are DHT nodes the one who shares data among peers let's say in torrent?

What bob said. you should be overriding the encoding if it is wrong.

1:48 PM
@Bob I totally think that's a business machine

stop serving as sw-ES or whatever encoding that is xD

and they just turned out a bunch for companies that insisted on standardising on one model, with no clue at all.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Maybe? shrug

from this article ehow.com/about_4688262_what-dht-nodes.html i was able to find out that DHT node helps only to find where the data is and they don't act as seeds

@Bob using whatever is left over to make something 'new' :d

Bob
1:49 PM
@Burgi That has nothing to do with it.

Whatr kind of business would buy a acer though?

Bob
The encoding is determined by your pages... I've never seen shared hosting force a specific encoding.

I support some that do @JourneymanGeek :(

swapped it to a hyphen, problem solved

I don't support that decision, I do end up supporting the hardware :D

Bob
@Burgi s/solved/shoved under a rug/

@Burgi but but.... that's not a fix

Bob
This is how you end up with funny encoding issues a couple months later and having to "fix" it again

1:51 PM
^^
when someone types é and means É

That small form factor PSU

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hey. At least it has expansion slots.

this content is hardcoded

@Burgi You should use the correct symbol. They are different because they have different meanings and usage.

Bob
Remember that HP machine? The one without any PCIe slots? And just a single VGA out?

1:52 PM
@Bob typically my criteria for dumpster dives is at least core 2 and ATX PSU
;p

Bob
@Burgi So? Slap a <meta charset="utf-8"> up the top, save the file as UTF-8, and make sure you aren't sending funky headers. Problem solved. Properly.

The motherboard dosen't quite look standard to me
0_0
There's a teardown by a guy who looks/sounds like a russian hitman

last try
removed mouse, deleted the driver, installed synaptics driver

@Bob dosen't actually look all that bad otherwise

rebooting, if this doesn't work HP can figure it out

1:54 PM
plastic hard drive caddy, full sized optical drive...
that PSU though

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Its performance is slightly above x5 Atom, somewhat below Core m3 :P

Though I really think the driver is borked, as it identifies as a synamtics device, but the newest drivers don't work for it.

Bob
@djsmiley2k Have you tried original HP drivers?
newest drivers for laptops don't always work

yup

1:55 PM
well, i've tried the drivers from the hp site

there's also a upgrade video by the same guy

which 'install' and tell me they've updated the device driver
every time...
which is why I think windows is then going 'oh hey I have a newer driver for that...'
and breaking the device.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Interesting fit on the fan w/ side vent

@DavidPostill thank you..this is what i was looking for..DHT nodes are actually the seeds which offer full file downloads..a DHT consists of these nodes and these nodes contain peers which are downloading the file

1:56 PM
What fan?
Only one I see is the CPU one

@djsmiley2k You're sure you deleted the driver instead of just uninstalling the device? There's a checkbox for that in the uninstall confirmation dialog

yup @BenN did that

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's a nice caddy

ticked the box, it even told me it was deleting the driver

@djsmiley2k errrr. did this system ship with windows 8?

Bob
1:57 PM
@JourneymanGeek I meant the CPU one :P

on reboot it comes up with the 'must reboot message'
so we reboot again.....

Ah. Is there anything enlightening in the Events tab of the device?

@JourneymanGeek maybe, but it was working before HP 'repaired' the screen
devices have an events tab?

@djsmiley2k aj. with the stream, only the older windows 8 driver worked
the windows 10 driver wouldn't

Uh, let me check the name. It has some tab that lists some info on the drivers and the time they were installed

1:58 PM
@JourneymanGeek I downloaded the win7 driver, from HP

@BenN ah hardware -> details

ah that's fine then
0_0
@Bob in the other video he says its ddr3

and hardware -> driver

I'm sure c2d is DDR2

1:59 PM
ok, so now I've rolled back the driver, to the 2006 version of a ps2 mosue driver.
