sigh AMD's recent GPU code name series (Sea Islands, Volcanic Islands) and GCN versions don't match up
I'm trying to compile information about the GPUs and have had trouble sorting the parts out

ahh
@DragonLord: IIRC, they relabelled some of the older series
I suspect @allquixotic might have an idea about it

This is what I have so far:
> GCN 1.0 Southern Islands & Sea Islands: CUs of 64 stream processors
> Oland: 384 in 6 CUs
> Cape Verde: 640 in 10 CUs
> Pitcairn: 1280 in 20 CUs
> Curaçao: 1280 in 20 CUs (revised Pitcairn)
> Tahiti: 2048 in 32 CUs (full-speed double-precision)
> GCN 1.1 Sea Islands & Volcanic Islands: CUs of 64 stream processors
> Bonaire: 896 in 14 CUs
> Hawaii: 2816 in 44 CUs
> GCN 1.2 Volcanic Islands: CUs of 64 stream processors
> Tonga: 2048 in 32 CUs (no more than 1792 in 28 enabled)
> *Iceland: unknown
> *Maui: unknown
> *GCN Pirate Islands: CUs of 64 stream processors
> *Treasure Island: 1536 in 24 CUs
> *Fiji: 3072 in 48 CUs
> *Bermuda: 4224 in 66 CUs

> *Rumored parts, may be incorrect
I suspect the Iceland and Maui parts don't even exist, and the Tonga GPU sits between Treasure Island and Fiji...
Ping me if anyone has ideas or questions regarding the above.
(Pirate Islands data from wccftech.com/…, CU counts derived from SP counts given)
In AMD GPU nomenclature, a codename by itself or with the Pro suffix refers to a part that is not fully enabled (one or more CUs are disabled). The XT suffix indicates a fully-enabled GPU. XTX and similar also designate a fully-enabled GPU, but with higher clock rates (often due to manufacturing process improvements).

Man, giant attacks are a pain
I ended up losing my horse (again. :( ), after the silly beast attacked the giant. I died a few times, and eventually ended up using my companion as a decoy (since the giant loses interest when she's injured) and strafed the big oaf with arrows.
Thankfully, while I normally don't use arrows much in skyrim, the giant is an impossible target to miss, even at range.

@allquixotic ever do massive reasearch on raid cards? my rocketraid 640 POS is dying. the cool thing about it was it was not a real raid card with processor. Raid0 only doesnt really need massive processing efforts, not parity etc. So this RR thing was just 2 seperate sata controllers and a microprocessor style. I get like 500mb/s (used to).
it did have a bios, so it assembled drives prior to any OS, and so is avilable everywhere. one advantage over a simple sata controller and software assembly
My dream raid card would be an Intel ICH stuffed on a card :-) because the onboard is always wonderfull . intel raid cards seem to use the LSI setup, with intel software, which sounds interesting.
Complaints about the LSI are it almost needs its own fan.
most of the raid cards are "real" really expencive, really have a processor on-board, and really unnessisary for simple raid0

There's always a reason to come back to old Red Alert 2 :)

7:32 AM
weird, why does a raid card costs more than a motherboard an intel cpu , and ddr3 :-)

7:45 AM
@allquixotic NumLock off
Tho, that's probably a laptop

how about this thing here? For 4x green hard drives (idle changed) in a pci-e 3.0 8x slot? newegg.com/Product/…
as far as i can tell its the "newer" stuff, i am afraid to end up with a PCI-e 3.0 compatable (or just called that) because the video card is a real 3.0 and i would like to cinfigure the whole bus to be in and stay in 3.0 not knock back to 2.0 like the other one did.

10:29 AM
most of this stuff is "server" but i donna want a server :-( , list of features is 27 long, with 3 that i want, 24 i wish were not even there.

@Psycogeek: won't happen

i want moran mode 4 sata port raid thing. why do they all gotta be sas even?
for the same (or less) money, there are numbers of external boxes like Nas and USB3 and all. I really like internal for speed and all in one box (mo more GD fans) but i can see why most people would be going with the external boxes.

11:10 AM
hi guys, how to ensure that a software in other languages than those of western Europe will be showing national letters properly? i mean for example software from Turkey, Denmark ... I have to install some national encodings to windows 7 right?

you mean like language pack? the system has all the letters of all the languages without any changes, especially windows 7 which has (almost) every language in every font item.

@JANORTS: unicode

and where do i set it up?
i remember it was maybe in the same place where is set up my PATH directories ?

Basically, as long as the software is written properly, and localised properly it shouldn't be an issue.

it happens from time to time ... last time i had to solve this problem was like 4 years ago
so i don't remember where i set it up
that time it was wih Enterprise Architect ... when i wanted to create UML diagrams and give them names in other language than English... Enterprise Architect was not able to keep the names in national language after I closed it and open it again...
it's maybe regional settings in windows?
no,no it's called LOCALE !!!!!!!!
;-)))
another problem
when i plug in my headphones, winodws is still playing sound from the loudspeakers... how can i fix it?

11:29 AM
un plug em :-)

gets the garlic.

they give me this button on my machine, but all this stuff is different on different machines.

Anyone wants a copy of spacechem? I suspect you may need a humble bundle account, but otherwise no strings attached.

I would rather just turn off the switch on my speakers, than deal with , never knowing what is going to happen and having to go 4 layers down to figure it out again.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I think I have it a dozen times over from all the bundles :P
Dammit, I know that charger is around here somewhere...

11:36 AM
i googled the problem and the answer was that i have to reinstall the driver for headphones

are they USB headphones?

when i plug in the heaphones i dont even see them recognized by windows
no, normal classic jack

then in all practical wording there is no "driver for headphones" just for the general audio chip.

also, what tool should i use to create a bootable USB stick?
i know... i meant driver for audio chip of course

@JANORTS to boot to what?

11:42 AM
i want to create a new partition so i downloaded gparted and now i want to boot from it
from a USB stick instead of burning gparted on a CD and boot from a CD

is the partioning for a windows system?

I have one partition that i am not using now
it is NTFS
I want to delete it

IMO if you are using only a windows system, then there are "ok" windows paritioning softwares out there, that will also work off-line when nessisary.
So you get to see a full GUI and know what is going to happen, then push the button, and it re-boots and wipes out your parition tables :-) or something lke that .
Meaning with any use of flucking with paritions, it is good to also have a full backup of the data.

my dog had fleas, so i sprayed him with some enviromentally friendly spray, and they all jump off. . . now i have fleas.

@Psycogeek - Spray yourself :-)
This is the reason treating the carpet is the best way to deal with fleas
My family treated our house and our dogs over a period of 20 years didn't have fleas. 2 seperate dogs too.

hello

hello

how ya doin?

@Ramhound yea i suspect i will have to treat the carpet and maybe the lawn too.

12:51 PM
My experience if you treat the carpet the lawn having fleas isn't a big deal
but it depends on how attrative your dog is to fleas and how much they bother him/her
and honeslty how much time they spend out doors
my dogs were in florida so they did their business and camein
they were spoiled :-)
they are spoiled ac dogs

dont suppose any of you are heavily familiar with EFI?

Whats your question?

I am under the impression that booting via EFI is going to improve IO access
and that it is beneficial for Virtualization
That said: I have no idea why i think that

Alright, so whats the question?
virtualization features of your hardware won't be effected by booting with or without EFI drivers.

If I plan on optimizing virtual machines; does it matteR?
in bios vs efi

12:55 PM
I am not aware of any virtual machines that actually implement UEFI virtualiation

then what is one common application that needs EFI/?

there isn't one

application meaning use, not program

...
ok
alright.

For the sake of comprehension

12:57 PM
At least with Windows your able to boot to GPT partitions allowing larger disk partitions

so required in windows to boot large GPT?

Yes; anything larger than 3TB boot drive would require GPT parttions
Linux doesn't have the same boot drive size limitations

But linux will boot bios from GPT with flagged initial FAT partition

But as I said I am not aware of any of the virtual machine software packages that have even implement a UEFI based virtualized system
Yes, Windows will too
I am saying Linux can boot to a disk larger then 3TB even with MBR/BIOS

ok.
I am in the process of setting my machines back up
somehow I broke windows
Or it broke itself

1:00 PM
Most people if they are implemented 3TB VM are not using Virtualbox, Hyper-V and VM Ware

Actually, I think virtual box has that s an option

They are using server based VM solutions

Well I know VM containers (VMware/Vbox/KVM) can fake an EFI
but thats internal, nothing to do with the machine

Right; I guess I was mistaken;

I know some things, but I have massive gaps in my IT
Networking for example.

1:02 PM
My statement was based on 4 VM all child of a Windows XP that didn't support EFI, so..

I am trying to figure out PCI passthrough
08528

1:21 PM
@TardisGuy none of those are container based VMS. LXC and Solaris jails are container based. Container based vms share a kernel with the host

Bob
1:50 PM
@Ramhound Hyper-V is intended for use on a server
It's actually a type-1

Speaking of Windows 8 version more than the Windows Server version

Bob
@Ramhound Hm. While it's not intended for server use, I believe it's still a type-1 hypervisor.

2:11 PM
@Bob back in the old days, trying to run certain low-level junk (AMD Catalyst, for example) on top of Hyper-V caused no end of problems :P
they weren't really designed for it

@bob , @allquixotic , @JourneymanGeek :
I was trying to register for GATE examination and since the registration is closing in a few days , I think , there is a heavy traffic to their servers. So , when I try to go to GATE login page from google : appsgate.iitk.ac.in/login.html browser shows loading icon for sometimes and finally gives up and displays https://appsgate.iitk.ac.in/login.html is not available
This happened everytime I checked . Sometimes , the web pages from their server was avialable , but then the service was crappy , I couldn't do a thing.
Half a day passed by and then I used host command to lookup their ip
`[joshua@arch ~]$ host appsgate.iitk.ac.in`
`appsgate.iitk.ac.in has address 180.179.227.56`
And then I used : 180.179.227.56/login.html and everything worked perfect ? Why ?
Shall I post it as a question ?

5:28 PM
@Ash http vs https I think

Ash
5:46 PM
@HackToHell that makes perfect sense.TY :)

6:01 PM
@allquixotic Well, what's confusing me is that the GPU codenames and GCN versions don't match up. For example, Tahiti is a Southern Islands part, but Curaçao is Sea Islands despite both being GCN 1.0. In fact, Curaçao appears to be little more than a process-revised Pitcairn.

6:12 PM
With NVIDIA, GPU model number and architecture always match up. GM2xx means a second-generation Maxwell GPU.
The first digit indicates major revsions of a particular architecture.
The second digit represents any intermediate revisions (as in GF117 for a revised Fermi chip).
The third digit indicates the relative size and power of the die: smaller numbers indicate larger, more powerful GPUs. Flagship parts are designated with a 0, performance parts 4, mainstream parts 6, and entry-level parts 7 or higher.

@ThatBrazilianGuy CONGRATULATIONS!

Right now, the only GM2xx part currently available is GM204, but I suspect a GM206 (and perhaps GM207) will come out next with GM200/GM210 coming later in 2015

@nhinkle You just deleted 2 of this guy's posts... And now he's asked a question, which, to me, doesn't sound genuine.

Q: My Computer Wont Turn On, The only thing I did was delete System32

Senior ToolboxI deleted system32 after someone suggested it to me after I got a large virus from certain downloads. Is there anyway to fix this?

GM204 is currently used in at least four video cards. GTX 980 is the only (consumer) card with a fully enabled Maxwell GPU (2048 CUDA cores in 16 of 16 SMMs). GTX 970 has 1664 in 13 of 16 SMMs.

What do you think?

6:25 PM
On mobile, GTX 980M has 1536 in 12 of 16, while GTX 970M has 1280 in 10 of 16.
@ṧнʊß Flagged as very low quality.

@DragonLord OK, but what do you think? Genuine or not?
Can you see his deleted posts? being a 10k+ user?

I think that user should simply be deleted altogether. This looks like deliberate abuse, a concerted attempt to disrupt Super User.

Exactly
I thought he would be banned
@nhinkle what do you think...?
@DragonLord he's unregistered, I think that's why he can't be deleted...?

6:36 PM
@ṧнʊß Should still be possible. I've seen it happen with spammers.

oh, ok. I've flagged a custom flag, so we'll see what happens.

6:49 PM
Back to the GPU talk: Maxwell has insane performance per watt. GM204 has 90-105% the performance of GK110 but does it with 33% less power!
... and it's still on a 28nm process!

@ṧнʊß @DragonLord I could delete him but the post ban will kick in anyhow. It's not worth suspending an unregistered user.

$10 says he's gonna post another question

7:21 PM
@DragonLord in my experience, paying attention to the GPU generation codenames only confuses things -- they don't slot any particular ASIC design into the generation codenames anymore -- you really just have to look at the codename of the individual ASICs
hell, they could call the Tahiti (full-scale GCN 1.0) "Isle of Sexy Amazonian Women" in the next release if they want to keep selling off stockpiled parts at low prices (which they probably will, as long as people are buying 'em and DX11 is still the latest API)
and it might be the R9-370X in the next launch. who knows.
personally, I have two GCN 1.0 Tahitis under the hood of my main desktop and I love it -- one of them I bought less than 30 days after Tahiti first hit the market, over two years ago; the second one I bought just about 2 months ago. for games that support CrossFireX (and for bitcoin mining and general OpenCL work) it's awesome

@allquixotic Well, Tahiti has the rather unique ability to do full-speed double precision
With Nvidia, you would need an expensive Titan card to do that

@DragonLord heh. wish I could use that gainfully somehow :P bitcoin is fixed point IIRC

AMD cards also have tended to performed better in integer arithmetic.

I have a reference design Radeon HD7970 and a brand spanking new XFX Radeon R9 280X; the chipsets are fully compatible and the CFX cable connects them just fine; the only difference is their default factory clock rate and the cooling solution used
the former uses a weird, small, extremely noisy (think jet engine) condenser fan; the latter uses two enormous traditional fans (they look like case fans, honestly)
and IIRC my total # of GFLOPS is greater than a single R9 290X, so I'm still better than GCN 1.1 when CrossFireX is fully employed
it's my first dual card configuration ever, but I couldn't pass up the offer of an extremely low price for what's still a pretty high-end card, and when combined with another one of its own, is extremely potent
had already invested way more than MSRP in the original card due to high demand when it launched, so I'm not giving up on that old one quite yet

7:40 PM
@allquixotic Actually, consumer Tahiti isn't even full speed. It's half-speed FP64. Full-speed FP64 on GCN is actually 1/2 of FP32—the Hawaii-based FirePro cards run at this speed.
It is comforting, however, that AMD is willing to give us consumers more double-precision performance than Nvidia does at this price point
The worst from GCN is 1/16 of FP32 (1/8 of full speed) but that's better than Kepler's 1/24 of FP32 and Maxwell's 1/32 of FP32.
Granted, GPU FP64 is not something 95+% of consumers use, so it's not really an issue.
