@bwDraco ok. about what?
I've never heard of "528-byte" sectors; there's only 512-byte and 4096-byte that I'm aware of

cat
!!caat

@allquixotic hmm. Alright, then, thought you knew something about fat sectors.

cat
@allquixotic They exist. They're an enterprise-only phenomenon

never heard of the number 528 used in reference to sector sizes, ever

5:05 PM
@cat did you use the real UV machine? the sun itself which can UV about anything into oblivion? Could it be that the edges have already mixed with other elements like skin oils and moisture , and that is cutting into the chemical perfection that is UV curing? Interested in the LED part i was told that weasily little UV LED lights are not best for the job of curing uv glues, many of them are not the correct range either, being blacklight not short range uv (or something like that)

cat
@Psycogeek Did you see the three times I said that doesn't exist here?

@cat oh yea i remember you mentioning that now. 500W halogen light with quartz bulb?

cat
Meh. If it's still liquid when in three weeks I'll be in Lanzarote so that'll do

@bwDraco for my part I have four HDDs that do 512e (4kn under the hood, hidden by 512 emulation in the firmware) and three SSDs that do 512n

Go to a tanning salon, and take a friend :-)

cat
5:07 PM
If they let me take it on the plane with "liquids" that is

@cat You could take your phone into a tanning salon - bonus you get a sun tan.

...

cat
@djsmiley2k Did you baby?

those floro tubes people put in this PC's in the 2000's?
not yet -_-
stopped again, but if they start again like that, wife is certain she will go in
because she'll wanna get the gas and air XD

cat
Have you tried inducing birth using drugs?

5:08 PM
@cat you should've asked him if he fork()ed

cat
That's how I arrived

which drugs?

So we're planning to build a new budget PC for Father. This will likely be the first time I'm building a machine from scratch. Opinions?

Labor induction is artificially stimulating childbirth. == Medical uses == Commonly accepted medical reasons for induction include: Postterm pregnancy, i.e. if the pregnancy has gone past the end of the 41st week. Intrauterine fetal growth restriction (IUGR). There are health risks to the woman in continuing the pregnancy (e.g. she has pre-eclampsia). Premature rupture of the membranes (PROM); this is when the membranes have ruptured, but labor does not start within a specific amount of time. Premature termination of the pregnancy (abortion). Fetal death in utero and previous history of stillbirth...

5:09 PM
@djsmiley2k :)

Linus Torvalds, Bryan Cantrill, Dennis Ritchie, Steve Wozniak, etc. (the "UNIX hands") all fork()ed when they had kids. Steve Ballmer, Bill Gates and Satya Nadella CreateProcess()ed. Richard Stallman doesn't have a multitasking operating system so he doesn't have kids.

Apparently prostaglandins work, but hey, if it were up to me I'd just get bored and ask for cesarean

@DavidPostill :D that's a knowing smile that one :P
i'm self employed so her being outta action for 2 weeks isn't ideal

@bwDraco Hmm....

cat
You're self emploed but she isn't?

5:11 PM
@djsmiley2k I know all about Oxytocin ;)

cat
Or does she work for you too

13 hours ago, by bwDraco
At the low end, you lose out on a custom build by paying a lot more for the OS and for the less expensive parts like the motherboard, memory, and case.

@cat she works part time

Isn't there compulsory maternity leave for two weeks after birth anyway?

i.e i pay the mortgage
yup

CPU: Good starting point, and that'll continue to be useful far afield of web/email tasks (light to moderate non-simulator gaming, word processing, photoshop, etc.)
Motherboard: You don't need Z170M for a non-gaming i3, so I agree with the B150M choice (though if you only need one disk you might even consider going Mini ITX and get an "I" like B150I if that exists)
Memory: 16 GB is great, even for web and video and email you need that to have a great experience imo ;p
Storage: if you can tolerate the potential risk of data loss after long periods of powered off that comes with the EVO, go f

@allquixotic I'm not sure data retention is an issue with the 850 EVO...

cat
lol me 2

5:16 PM
The 840 EVO had issues but that's planar TLC. The 850 EVO is 3D TLC.
Also, mATX seems to be the least expensive of the form factors to build on.

honestly you can probably get a base model i3 NUC (the one that's tall enough to support a SATA 2.5" disk) and build a similar system for cheaper or same price but very tiny and portable

cat
@Tyyppi_77 lmao

         product: Samsung SSD 850
phew

cat
Hmm?

@allquixotic Father's existing system is ATX mid-tower with an mATX board.
The hard drive cage is badly designed, though, and takes up much more space than it should.

5:19 PM
@bwDraco that still doesn't answer the question of why you would buy a chassis bigger than is necessary for the components you're buying
unless you plan to someday upgrade this to a serious gaming rig or add many more storage devices over time or add optical drives

One optical drive will be installed. It will be taken from the old machine; the ODD was already replaced because the stock one was failing. Hence, no optical drive is listed in the above build.

okay; but there are micro ATX cases that will slot an optical drive
still doesn't explain why you're going with a mid-tower

ewww optical drives

cat
Eww optical drives
ew optical drives

I have a USD one -- if I ever need an optical drive I can exchange some money for an optical drive
@cat edit this to say "optical drives"

you missed ' optical drives'

every chat line is trimmed of whitespace before being posted so that won't work

@allquixotic but you don't have a USD onr!

5:25 PM
@djsmiley2k true, I'm not even sure how I'd order an ONR

I don't think there's a huge advantage to going with a smaller case. This is a cost-sensitive build.

The system may get a mid-level dGPU at some point in the future, but it won't initially be built with one.

@djsmiley2k I'd rather order one from the US

5:27 PM
@djsmiley2k thanks

that site wins 'best image used on a miltary site'

I'll see if the navy will sell me any

The smaller case is likely to actually cost more.
hmm. I'll look at the Corsair 88R.

oh lord who star'd it?

@bwDraco hmm

5:31 PM
Okay. Swapping out the 200R for the 88R.

way I see it, if you can go smaller, you should
easier to haul if you have to rearrange a room or move the computer to get new carpet or something

...but PCPartPicker is giving me a compatibility error!
(PSU too large!)
> The EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply length of 165mm exceeds Corsair Carbide Series 88R MicroATX Mid Tower Case maximum of 160mm.

interesting
there are SFF PSUs though
I mean, laptop charger bricks basically are SFF PSUs :P

SuperNOVA 550 GS.
Not as good as the 550 G2, but will fit in the case.
(Father's old Dell came with a 300W PSU.)
Picking a motherboard wasn't hard. I knew Z170 was not necessary and that mATX would be sufficient (no plans to scale beyond one dGPU).
It's the first time I'm building a new PC from scratch, though.

cat
"NVidia installer failed"

Thanks. Very helpful and descriptive

5:44 PM
Is it appreciably harder to build into an mATX case than it is to build into a mid-tower?
(Bear in mind that we've never had a desktop that's smaller than a mid-tower. The existing Dell has an mATX motherboard in a mid-tower chassis.)
mATX case will limit choice of video card. Is this going to be an issue?
I'll still stick with 550W.
Case includes a single rear exhaust fan. This is more than adequate as Father's old desktop had nothing more than a single rear exhaust fan.
I'm not going to add any case fans to the machine.
...for a basic desktop which is unlikely to see anything more than basic gaming, mid-tower is overkill.

@cat :( Something happened
@bwDraco No. Not in my experience. If anything, it was easier, because my case has a split down the middle which aids greatly in cable management

The end goal is an efficient, low-cost, and easily maintainable system.

on one side is the PSU and your storage; on the other side is the PCIe cards, motherboard, RAM and such

I want to build a desktop that lasts at least 5-7 years with proper maintenance. Father's old desktop is about 8-1/2 years old and is starting to show some performance issues.

6:00 PM
@bwDraco for that long of a time frame, your father may have to do fairly frequent disk cleanups to keep within storage limitations of a 250GB disk
just saying... windows updates can be big and leave around gigs of wasted space
might need to set up an automated ccleaner run

@allquixotic His current hard drive has 200 GB of 320 GB in use.

hmm ok

@bwDraco I'd still aim for leeway, files are only going to get larger...

Some cleanup can bring that down to about 150 GB, and a fresh install with basic apps will probably take up about 50-60 GB.
@Mokubai The build is very cost-sensitive.
It's intended to provide optimal performance for day-to-day productivity use.
Prebuilt systems tend to go with SSD+HDD at this price level.
I suspect Father will continue to use his existing external hard drive. He's stated that he doesn't need more than 250 GB, and I don't see reason to believe that storage capacity is going to be an issue.
We'll see. If anything, a hard drive for bulk data isn't exactly expensive these days.
Also, can I delete the WinRE (recovery) partition after installation and just use the Windows 10 installation media for recovery?

6:24 PM
@bwDraco possibly, but due to the differences in "build number", you may not be able to perform a repair from an older-build windows installation media onto an updated OS
in the past, with older versions of Windows it has been that way
you can't perform a repair of say, Vista SP1 from a Vista RTM DVD

@allquixotic I know. Every major Windows update is considered a different Windows version. Window 10 v1511 cannot be repaired using Windows 10 RTM media.
As far as the system is concerned, they are different versions of Windows.

but they keep the recovery environment partition updated per the installed windows build version :)
so I'd keep it, personally

Jan 11 at 19:40, by bwDraco
(You wouldn't be able to repair-install Windows 10 v1511 with a Windows 10 RTM disc, anyway, as they are technically different releases of Windows.)

7:15 PM
...wait for Zen?
Given the timeline for the build, this may make more sense.

7:35 PM
!!/should

@bwDraco That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

!!should

@bwDraco I'm not so sure anymore. It can go either way

Maven is stupid. :( They say omit the version and it'll use the parent version, but the parent version (has to be) hardcoded in the child's POM! I want to have a series of modules that are all set to the exact same version, WITHOUT having to copy and paste the same version number across umpteen poms. Is it really this unusual of a use case to need that? Why wouldn't Maven architect a really simple way to do this? Cripes... — allquixotic 37 secs ago

Still busy doing performance tuning on Father's desktop. Flushed out and reduced the maximum space for restore points using vssadmin, deleted lots of old data (with Father's consent, of course), removed a few unused apps, and installed CCleaner and Defraggler. I've managed to drop disk space usage to under 100 GB. The machine's currently running a free-space defrag.

10:39 PM
I've gone so far as to delete and recreate the USN journal:
4
A: Dangers of deleting C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J:$DATA

grawityThe USN journal's purpose is to provide a complete list of filesystem changes to various userspace programs like virus scanners or file indexers (e.g. "Everything"). You can safely delete this journal, using fsutil on Windows, or rm on Linux (ntfs-3g): fsutil usn deletejournal C: It's a good ...

Free space defragmentation is still ongoing.
I'm also rebuilding the search index.
This is by far the most aggressive performance tune-up I've ever performed on any computer, and I sure hope this will restore most of the performance that was lost over time.
Then again, this machine is nearly nine years old and it sure can use a tune-up...
(Machine records indicate that initial install was on October 15, 2007.)

cat
11:00 PM
Fuck. Feelings. They're happening again.

Pulling every trick in the book to tune up the machine. Oy vey...

@bwDraco Why are you bothering since you are planning on buying a replacement?

The machine will remain in service for several more months.
I'm trying to make the most out of existing hardware.
At the same time, it's going to be replaced too soon to warrant getting an SSD.

cat
11:52 PM
Bought a big box of batteries because I keep losing them => Lose 3 before the day is out.

@bwDraco pity. Imo a SSD is the best upgrade you can make on older, compatible hardware.

Huh, at 4 days from release I can't find GTX 1060 reviews. Don't the journalists get it in advance like for games?

yup. but there's often an embargo

Embargo?

basically a condition of getting 'free' hardware to test is, you can't talk about it until ddmmyyyy
