@Bob: "Anchorage bought Dick Smith from Woolworths for $20 million and made $500 million after floating it on the stock exchange nine months later."
I guess we know where all the money went...

Bob
@MichaelFrank lol, yea, they were all talking about that during the whole administration process

That's a bloody good flip though.
PUNS
I'm curious about this Honestly company. ;) — Michael Frank 14 secs ago

hm
I'm trying to figure out if something belongs here, or Android ;p
I hate it when I don't know if a question is on topic on my own site
ahh. I think it would be
might be two questions augh

Bob
1:20 AM
@JourneymanGeek what's the question?

@Bob working out when/how a usb c cable is safe
measuring resistance seems trivial
IF I could find my multimeter
picking up one of these >_> dx.com/p/…
I'll be double checking it with ampere once I get it
and yes, that's a very wierd USB type A connector

still trying to find a sealed drive, for reasonable price, and noticed the WD RED nas of the 8T variety is a 5400 (green) drive, but looks sealed like the helium. But i am not finding anywhere if it is helium. WD also sells the gold datacenter and it definately is, and high priced too.

also, apparently there's an app for the two new nexuses that would check cables for you ._.

they are so thrilled with thier Nas software , that most people would be tossing out :-) that they left out the hardware info.

JMK
1:36 AM
morning/afternoon/evening all
does anybody know if the intel NUC takes laptop RAM?

@JMK all NUC class machines do

JMK
@JourneymanGeek cool

I don't own an 'intel' nuc, but my gigabyte brix, asrock beebox and thinkpad x220 use the same DDR3 laptop ram. Newer nucs might be DDR4

JMK
I have a laptop with an Hewlett-Packard 18A5 (U3E1) mobo

also, you can't fit desktop ram into a NUC formfactor

JMK
1:39 AM
could I buy an intel NUC and transplant the ram and ssd into it?
the SSD is a standard 2.5" drive

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I would've recommended Blitzwolf as a more trustworthy brand: banggood.com/…

@Bob yeah, tacked it on as a aftertthought on another order
@JMK assuming its a NUC that takes a 2.5" drive
there's some that are msata/m.2 only

JMK
@JourneymanGeek ah do some not?

@JMK that is correct

JMK
gotcha, thanks
do the units which don't take 2.5" drives take msata drives instead?

1:45 AM
yes,
er
something smells funny about that ram
how old is that system?

JMK
it's not new
2012~ish
but still really fast
I'm not a gamer, just a coder
fast for Visual Studio, maybe slow for anything else
would the ram still work in a NUC?
hm just reading the link I sent across
I have 16GB ram
it says max 2GB
took the mobo reading from speccy...
@JourneymanGeek

er
that's totally not the system you linked XD

JMK
maybe Speccy is a bit hungover
lol

or you are. You linked an AMD based desktop ;p
something else worth considering
many NUCs only have one ram slot
you'd need a core iX model or a beebox, depending on your needs

JMK
ok I'm an idiot
haha
apologies

1:54 AM
and it wouldn't be a big upgrade over this in either case I suspect

JMK
I'm asking because I use the laptop basically as a PC
don't even use the screen
seems like it would make more sense to have an actual PC
and the NUC's seem cool, especially because it seems as though I could transplant the ram/ssd, and also hook up a 4k monitor
worth it @JourneymanGeek or waste of money?

@JMK I use mine as a low power, always on, semi headless system
4k monitors are going to be hard to drive 'right' (4k60)

JMK
even if just coding?

I don't think there would be measurable, substancial improvement unless you went for the higher end of stuff
ya

JMK
right ok
thanks for the advice!
much appreciated!
@JourneymanGeek
would my best bet just to be build an up to date pc?

2:04 AM
IMO, yeah

JMK
cool
been sort of wanting to do that anyway

tho your recycling prospects would be limited
you can reuse the drive... and that's about it

JMK
gotcha

IIRC skylake would do 4k

JMK
right ok cool
is the cpu important with 4k?
or just the gpu?

2:06 AM
er. Not particularly

JMK
but it helps

but skylake's onboard gpu does 4k60

JMK
?
ok so I could i3/i5 with decent gpu?

you wouldn't need a seperate GPU for non gaming purposes

JMK
again I'm not gaming
right ok
but it would help
lol cool

2:07 AM
errrr
I'd basically build the rest of my box

JMK
gotcha

then buy a video card if performance annoyed me ;p

JMK
makes sense :)
thanks!
long term I want to go the Jeff Atwood route and have three 4k
lol
but....baby steps

oh, THEN you need a beefy video card
I'm dual 4k ;)

JMK
nice one
a colleague of mine has 1 4K and a couple of other screens
the 4k works so well with Visual Studio
definitely the future

2:13 AM
IMO its about 4-5 years from being common
but the key building blocks are there in the midrange

JMK
yes totally
very cool!

(some may disagree. you have a 60hz refresh range at best - and some folks here find that inadequate)
@Bob You need to watch this on your new monitor youtube.com/watch?v=5ndU8XuUaOI

JMK
ha I use a Plugable usb dongle for my secondary screens

JMK
not sure about the fps but still usable
still want to get a decent graphics card on the go, though

2:24 AM
I think that would drive a lot of the people here crazy

JMK
haha
probably
thankyou for the advice, will definitely action
@JourneymanGeek

lol
no need to ping me if you know I'm here XD

JMK
appreciated!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek You'll have to remind me in about 6 hours...
@JourneymanGeek Oh yea, CS:GO runs surprisingly well on 4k - at least until you run into smoke or explosion effects. Sudden massive FPS dip :(
I was targeting 100, but might have to push it up to 150 normal. Cause even at 100 normal explosions drop it to 40-ish.
Or maybe upgrade my 760 :P
hmmmmmmmm ~$500-$600 for a 1070

hm. double fail
I cut my old sim card the wrong way
then trimmed off the corner again
and it works
now I lost the sim card removal tool

Bob
2:37 AM
wtf
ok
so I'm tunneling through my server in Canada (OVH)
Microsoft thinks it's in Brazil
Amazon thinks it's in India
?!?!
geoip says it's in Montreal, Canada

Hey guys, I've heard a ton of youtubers complaining that random people have been able to social engineer their cellular provider into programming a new SIM card with the victim's account, and giving it to them to put in the attacker's phone. From there they can often use a combination of SMS, call history, and various things you get "for free" just by holding a phone that identifies as a certain number, to hack other accounts from there. And so on.
I know organizations like the Social Security Administration have specific mechanisms in place to alert them that you might have reason to expec
(should mention that calling from the number registered on the account also acts as a huge social engineering lever, too, even if you aren't able to directly access the credential you need)

Bob
@allquixotic O_O

Bob
I suspect your current audience in this room won't know much about US telcos :P

2:41 AM
@allquixotic sounds plausible
the social engineering bit

Bob
Sounds weird, really.
Not only would it have to be rather targeted, how do you convince the telco to ship a SIM out to a new address?

but if someone 'stole' your sim card, your current sim card would go inactive

Bob
Though, I suppose if you say you're traveling... hm. Even then rather dodgy.

@Bob might be possible to do it in store

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Without showing ID of some sort?
Guess it depends how lax their policies and employees are.

2:43 AM
@Bob US dosen't have a 'universal' id of any sort

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Neither do we :P
Driver's licence or photo ID card (optional, often if no licence) are typical.

@allquixotic the DMZ is kinda dead. They did a SF

Bob
@JourneymanGeek They did? o.O

Not to the same level, but its a lot less active
people do pop in, but response time may be slow

@JourneymanGeek ahh :P
slack then?
wow, my new monitor actually has enough pixels to render Bob's entire room list
3
that's a new one

Bob
2:52 AM
lol
brb joining more rooms :D
@allquixotic how's the 1080?
I'm trying to figure out which one I want :P

@Bob ship? you walk into a store, here.

Bob
Founder's edition... Asus Strix... MSI has half a dozen...

@allquixotic just curious
does the US let you do burner phones?

I could bring in a phone, know my name, address and a few other minor details, to a Verizon retail store or even a reseller, and with a little bit of work (and luck!), I could get a SIM card that I don't have now, and activate it on my phone
@JourneymanGeek what do you mean, burner phones?
@Bob works well for me. it's good

2:54 AM
(basically walk into a store and buy a phone and sim with no ID)

I don't really need much more than the 1080 and won't for years. wish they'd optimize the drivers a bit more for the ultra high-end games though :P Vulkan and DX12 and such
@JourneymanGeek or even not even buying a phone :P
just bringing in an existing phone.

yeah ;p
singapore has ID + no more than 3 active sims at a time ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek a few years back here they introduced registration at POS. then they made it registration at activation cause taking details in a supermarket took forever

what I'd like to see is them using the digital chip in our drivers license card or passport to digitally verify that the person in the store is who they say they are
and the picture in case they steal your wallet lol

2:57 AM
@allquixotic but civil rights!
(cause apparently knowing who you are is one step away from rounding up undesirables...)

Bob
@allquixotic You're using founder's edition, yea? How noisy is it?
Idle & under load

@JourneymanGeek make it an opt-in security upgrade to your account, then

yeah
(We actually have a standard ubiquitious ID system and it works well)

@Bob the central A/C in my room is so piss poor that I find myself constantly using loud air circulation fans; comparing the sound of the founder's edition card which is under my desk to a fan that you can clearly hear on my mic in TS is just no comparison

my business account (vrses personal) requires that anyone using the debit card , is IDed , it happens about 1-10 times.

2:59 AM
I'd have to swelter in hot heat and max out my GPU to even have a chance to hear the GPU
basically my room has a steady noise baseload that drowns out the computer entirely

Bob
@allquixotic I don't even have A/C -_-
Just a lil box fan.

I have even processed credit card requests through the debit card (it works both ways) 3 times with no signature on the back of the card :-) some of it probably has to do with the town i live in, they will check that stuff when anybody cares. and here i was saying the 4 digit pin numbers arent secure. I can get $70 in gas by just knowing my zip code and running it as credit, no sig required.

Bob
> Other included software allows for control of your card via your smart phone
O_O

secure is just the word they put on things , for people with belief systems.

Bob
3:25 AM
> The first of our new titles is the extremely strenuous Ashes of Singularity benchmark. A game that doesn't care what CPU you've brought to the party, it's having it for lunch.
:D

I'm playing a hackery game and there is a server with port 5060 open. I've found that 5060 is used for SIP, but do you guys know of a way I can connect to that and listen on it? One of the clues keeps saying "follow the music" so I'm hoping there might be some sort of music coming out of that or something.

Bob
@duzzy Find yourself a SIP client?
This list of SIP software documents notable software applications which use Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as a voice over IP (VoIP) protocol. == Servers == === Free and open-source license === Asterisk Cipango SipServlets 1.1 application server Elastix FreeSWITCH FreePBX GNU SIP Witch Kamailio, formerly OpenSER Mobicents Platform (JSLEE[2] 1.0 compliant and SIP Servlets 1.1 compliant application server) Mysipswitch OpenSIPS, fork of OpenSER SailFin SIP Express Router (SER) Enterprise Communications System sipXecs Yate YXA, based on Erlang === Proprietary license === 3Com VCX IP te...

I tried downloading a couple, but I didn't find one that could just connect to an ip address.

Bob
@duzzy What game is this?

3:30 AM
It's at a conference called OpenWest

Bob
ah
@duzzy Sorry, I've not dealt with SIP before :\

I haven't dealt with it much either. Thank you, though.

Bob
@duzzy I see some references to gateways... maybe you shouldn't be trying to connect to the IP as a remote client, but rather configuring it as your gateway?

Ah, hm... that's an interesting view. I'll take a look at that. Thank you for the link.
Couldn't hurt to mess around with it and see what happens.

Bob
O_O
@JourneymanGeek 4k miiiiiight have been a mistake :P overclock3d.net/reviews/gpu_displays/…
GTX 1080 => 22 FPS in 4k?!
wtf, Metro?
(most games only manage 60-or-so too...)

3:37 AM
0_0
60 sounds about right

Bob
@JourneymanGeek A lot dip down to 40-50

@DavidPostill That answer was significantly edited after I made that comment
Also, hi everyone, I'm not dead; I'm on vacation!

Bob
@BenN Where to?

California

Bob
Ah, nice. (I have no idea where you're from :P)

3:40 AM
I'm from Illinois, so I don't usually get to see mountains
So today I spent several hours driving on a road that winds around numerous mountains

3:52 AM
lol

store.wdc.com/store/wdus/en_US/pd/ThemeID.40718400/… shows i can buy the WD red right from the company, with free shipping and 30 day return privelages for only ~$15 more than the average online pricing. why wouldnt i do that?
it worked out before buying direct i forget what it was, and the item had the latest firmware, and was better packed.
which just leaves only 1 question. youtu.be/y4_QCjvkWeI?t=288 does it have the 7 platters like the HGST (or data crammed). because it is confirmed that it is helium type.

Bob
> If these results were any closer we'd be booking them a hotel room and a photoshoot with TMZ.

these guys analised much of it without cracking it open, and it is much the same as the HGST . the 7200 is not that much extra power worth discussing even. the writes on the 7200 can be better (which is par). other than that it doesnt choke being a 5400, like all these high density things.
I am thinking a pair of WD reds on the external (backup) and a pair of HGST $$$$ or Red "pro" (both 7200) inside for speed.

4:10 AM
an 8T RED Pro or HGST (both 7200) jumps ~$100-130 more in price over the 5400rpm as of today. With this stuff still being new, and like those video cards that are new the prices are jacked up some.
sort of funny because this red drive is actually a green drive :-) at 5400 and people are saying that reds (general) can be set for rediculously low idle times. But WD now has better easier software for changing the idle time now (vrses WDidle and dos)

4:32 AM
ooh
mr robot started again

4:46 AM
superuser.com/questions/1100668/… <--- about to be dead spam

5:13 AM
season 2?

yes

@djsmiley2k yeah

5:32 AM
cool
wife still labouring

5:53 AM
aw

hello!
@JourneymanGeek I kinda stopped liking it at the end of season one...

@Rahul2001 cause of the fight club reverse?

@JourneymanGeek I can't really point out a single moment, I just gradually started to lose interest...

ah ok
I know the feeling
happened with a few shows for me

It became to weird and messed up for my liking...
I think I'll watch it again when I'm a bit more mature... :P

5:59 AM
;p
I need to watch the last three episodes of Wynonna Earp at some point
SPOILERS!
also, I'm more interested in dark matter and killjoys

@JourneymanGeek What's that show about?

@Rahul2001 urban fantasy. Girl shoots demons in the head.

uh... ok

Basically she's a decendant of wyatt erp, and these guys are people Wyatt killed and came back as undead.
so she has to send them back to hell and break the curse

Not really my type, I think

6:03 AM
Problem for me is they spend too much time with the token lesbian, and not enough on the charecters that INTEREST me.
Like Agent Dolls
oh and one of the charecters just annoys me.
;p
(I have nothing against people of any orientation. Just bad writing)
oh
and battlebots. But I doubt people here are that enlightened to the joys of watching robots catch fire.

well we have robot wars over here

yup yup

6:19 AM
but not many fires

oh, the last episode there were two battery fires

Bob
> Lite: 4 hours per day
Basic: 8 hours per day
Rapid: 20 hours per day
Rapid Plus: 40 hours per day
One of these is not like the others.

6:48 AM
@Bob or one of these is not on earth

7:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ooh, might give it a watch!

7:41 AM
morning
you know what is really bad with skype?
you have to sign in in order to prevent it from auto starting with windows

@MichaelFrank it has promise but I wouldn't have watched it if it wasn't a quiet period for other TV shows ;p

Bob
@Burgi ...just disable the startup item?

7:57 AM
@MichaelFrank it has promise, but I wouldn't have watched it if there was anything else I wanted to watch at the time
hm. I can't remember when's the last time I used barcode scanner
(deciding what to move over to the new phone)

@bob, in msconfig?

@JourneymanGeek yety for some reason, without it, you'll find you need it

da. Installed
I do have a LOT of space on this phone ;p

@Burgi have you ever used AutoRuns ?

no?

8:03 AM
well if you want to control microsoft, with one program, that is a good way to do it.

wibble
wifes labour continues

you can shut off any shi (i mean) stuff that runs, including services, and even context menu items , disable drivers and even ruin the booting , ok so a backup might come in handy for those using it the first time.

now i'm sure this is real, I just hope it hurries up a bit

@djsmiley2k You clearly have a smart kid who is reluctant to leave.

how long has she been in labour?

8:07 AM
yst 5:19 PM

@Burgi early labour: 1 week
active labour? since 1:30pm yesterday
@JourneymanGeek that's when i was home and able to chat :D
With our first, it was 22 hours from start of active labour

first kid?
ah

2nd

@Psycogeek i just logged in and disabled it ;)

you dont want to rush labor, if the doc is about to miss his Golfing T-time he will induce labor with horrific side effect drugs , and pull the kid out through small holes in the guts and all. nothing good can come of it.

8:08 AM
my friend was only in labour for 3hrs on her first (only?)

Bob
@Burgi task manager can do it in 8 and 10

haha

@Bob running 7 at the mo

@Psycogeek everything here is midwife led

i might upgrade to 10 this weekend

Bob
8:09 AM
Ah. Then, yea, msconfig

they are anti-unneeded drugs

i didn't think of that to be honest

@djsmiley2k thats good, so you keep her laboring, and she can drop one in the cabbage patch :-)

hhehe we'll hopefully have a pool

Bob
@cat you have any guesses on how much GTX 1080 prices are likely to drop?
I've pretty much decided on the card (MSI Gaming X) but I'm trying to figure out if I should use the credit card with the price protection :P

8:16 AM
that card is worth $600 USD and as soon as the hype is over and the manufacturing has them in quantity on all the shelves, i think we will see it go down to there.

Bob
@Psycogeek That's Nvidia msrp but not necessarily what the flagships will drop to :/
Think it'll drop much in the next 6 months? :P

thats MSRP, we are being Robbed
Price gouging is a pejorative term referring to when a seller spikes the prices of goods, services or commodities to a level much higher than is considered reasonable or fair, and is considered exploitative, potentially to an unethical extent. Usually this event occurs after a demand or supply shock: common examples include price increases of basic necessities after hurricanes or other natural disasters. In precise, legal usage, it is the name of a crime that applies in some jurisdictions of the United States during civil emergencies. In less precise usage, it can refer either to prices obtained...
it is actually been made illegal to sell a gallon of water for $5 when someone is dying of thirst , now how is that any different with people dying of video with 4K monitors :-)

:D
5 mins apart but only 35~ sec atm

do we get an update on the CM of dialation too ?

sure :P
be careful what you wish for :P

Bob
8:34 AM
Does she know you're telling us? :P

it is ok, he will have 18 years of restitution for anything he says now :-)

@djsmiley2k do you know what it is?

no but I can make an educated guess @Burgi :D

a pokemon?
they seem to be everywhere these days

@Bob she knows i'm telling you timings

8:39 AM
is there an App For that?

cat

cat
@Burgi Lmao troll
I don't even see the point of posting crap like that...
Like, who what why? What would make someone do such a thing?
Eh, I only have to scale to 80% on a regular 1080p monitor to render Bob's entire room list. My old 1920x1200 ones might be able to do it at 100%, though I've never tried

boris is the new foreign secretary.
it puts him in charge of MI6 and GCHQ

cat
@Psycogeek And gone
> Google Play allows you to set up a family sharing group
The group members will be able to access all the same paid-for apps, movies and TV shows, games, books and magazines. However, Google Play Music cannot be shared.
there's only one way to set up a family group right now. Those interested must install the Play Music app on an Android device, go to the app hamburger menu and touch Subscribe > Family > Set up family > Get started > Continue.
^^ Well done google, makes sense
The only way to set up sharing? Play Music. The only thing you can't share? Play Music.
!!headdesk

@cat you should archive something like this in a lead box burried 18 feet under the ground, with a huge marker , like the empire state building. so when these 2 idiots blow each other up , a future nuclear winter generation can learn from our misteaks .

@cat makes perfect sense. Not.
More seriously, sounds like an awesome GPM feature that most record companies will hate
