oh. maybe.
though, I'm likely not available this weekend (saturday was a maybe, depending on what the electrician who's coming does) and I want t ofinish that soase game first too :P

ah. Yeah

MrZ
Hello, can someone help me here? I've a problem when waking my computer from sleep mode (Windows 10) -- superuser.com/questions/1101003/…

@MrZ Yep, just grab a number from the machine.
(We don't really do on request answers here.) But hang tight and someone that can answer will eventually take a look.

@MichaelFrank I'm still debating adding that to the room description

@JourneymanGeek heh
Hmm... Guess there's gonna be a lot more people on Facebook with French filters on their profiles tomorrow.

Bob
12:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'm refreshing tracking every other hour -_-

12:58 AM
@Bob if only there were an app for that ;p

If you search for "Where's my package?" in Google, it'll give you results for packages it finds in your gmail account.

Looks like the OP3 drops down to 500mA on a USB 2.0 socket on my PC (which is good)
tries to draw 1.5A on a 1.0A xiomi charger (which could be bad?) - both with the 'special' dash charging cable

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I think there is an aliexpress app
not gonna touch that one with a ten foot pole
I don't even have a ten foot pole

@Bob the charging cable?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek the app

1:07 AM
ah
I'd rather use aftership or 17track
oh
damnit ampere needs better docs

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I don't even have tracking numbers yet.
Aliexpress was "up to 8 days before shipping out"
MSY will ship out in "1-3 business days"

ooh, dash charging is funky
the max usb current ampere detects changes with the source I use
but I don't see excessive power drain anywhere so meh
the stock cable will not blow up my desktop

@cat the other alternative won't work on my phone
I suppose I can get a inline usb ammeter/voltmeter

Quick question: Does defragmenting a hard drive from another computer risk any issues?

in theory? No

I'm trying to fix poor performance on my father's old PC and I've put it in my hard drive dock on this laptop.

1:35 AM
Clippy, go away!
SMART comes up clean.

@bwDraco should be safe, I think
but that's not what I'd do

The FS is badly fragmented, says Defraggler...

considering some defraggers have a preboot defrag option
@bwDraco jkdefrag (the old old one) would work in the worst situations with noticable performance improvements

I really don't want to install a different defragmentation program, and my PC has far more compute power.

you did back it all up first right?

1:37 AM
Also, for some reason, the hard drive wouldn't show up in CrystalDiskInfo on his system.
Might be a chipset issue...
nForce 520, really old.

Spinrite it.

or the disk's really old

The disk isn't broken.

@MichaelFrank spinrite isn't designed for modern drives
even if it did work

It works on everything.

1:38 AM
(Defragmentation can be surprisingly compute-intensive...)
Also, Windows doesn't defragment larger files. The system's running Vista, which does not help, either.
It's a 320GB Samsung drive.

@bwDraco I've found that to an extent 'healthy' drives slow down with age too

In an attempt to diagnose issues, I've detached the drive from Father's desktop and put it in my dock.
Feb 23 at 3:34, by bwDraco
@JourneymanGeek My father's old Dell Inspiron 531 is eight years old and it is still fully operational.
The service life of the system is coming to an end as Vista approaches EOL...
April 11, 2017 is the critical day.

Wow, I was gonna say put Win7 on it... but they Dell don't supply drivers for 7.

The drive's contents are a mess, though. I can probably defrag it much better than his system can.

@MichaelFrank would stull run windows 7 fine
or 10

1:44 AM
Yea, it probably would.

I have a pair of even older laptops that run 10.

We don't have any licenses for Windows 10. I'm not about to spend $140 to upgrade a very old machine.

upgraded them to (a cheap ) ssd

A clean install would also be required.

@bwDraco which isn't a bad thing

1:46 AM
SSD's the best solution, but I really don't want to upgrade such an old machine.
I'm more interested in building him a new PC.
Father wants to buy a new laptop, though...

depending on your dad's needs the latter might make sense
if he's mostly pottering around on the web and doing office style stuff

Including Windows license cost ($140), how high a budget would I need to break even on building a system compared to buying one?
$500? $600? more?
Assume an SSD is part of the system cost.
The system is planned to be built or purchased in late 2016/early 2017.
Everyone busy?

2:04 AM
you dont build your own system to break even. you build your own system to:
1) have descent parts instead of junk
2)arrange your own upgrade path and possibility
3) know how it was built you know how to upgrade and fix it
4) you can spend hours longer being more meticulous about everything, than exists on the usual assembly line where stuff is often missed.
most of my builds will cost more, but live much longer without any problems ever.

Bob
@MichaelFrank Spinrite is stupid in all situations except possibly last-ditch data recovery, and that's after a ddrescue and immediately before chucking the drive in a bin.

As unlikely as this is, I think the DIMM memory on my crappy 2004 server is starting to give out
"Finally!"
Including Linux license cost ($0), how high a budget would I need to break even on building a home server compared to buying one?

@Bob Really? I always hear about it being used for slow drives.

@Bob Spinrite is just steve the salesman selling you snake oil again
"It's hand-optimized ASM, so it's the best hard drive optimization tool ever invented! Our clients have experienced a life boost of up to 2 more years!"
Actually it would be libelous for me to say something like that, since he never actually said that.

Bob
@MichaelFrank Cargo cult...

2:16 AM
Hey anyone got some sticks of 266MHz DDR SDRAM laying around
I almost got my hands on some, but some kid threw them away thinking it was junk when I wasn't looking

@oldmud0 Maybe if you asked like... years ago! :P

They are going for $20 online, but I'm sure somebody out there has big dinosaurs in their attic like me
Yeah, can I pay you in years?
I don't have money :/

Bob
@oldmud0 Funnily enough, I probably do. Shipping cost is another matter entirely.

oh, you live in the uk don't you

Bob
@oldmud0 Wrong hemisphere.

2:19 AM
the us?
aussie?

Bob
Third guess lucky? :P

well hemisphere is ambiguous, it could be divided into north-south or east-west
better "quartersphere"

Bob
@oldmud0 Even if you go east-west, uk and us are on the same

> Memory Device on Connector: DIMM_1B

> Failures: Single bit warning error rate exceeded
> Size: [removed due to offensive nature]
The fans on the server can go from 1,600 rpm to 20,000 rpm. There are 5 fans.

@oldmud0 eh. Run memtest on it. Then reseat and try again.

2:24 AM
Right now they are reading at about 3500 rpm each.
@JourneymanGeek they're cumulative errors across the life of the RAM. It's non-critical.
opening the cover on this big heavy pile of junk takes so much work since you have to drop the server on its side (crashing all the drives at once) and then removing the cover which covers three different faces
not to mention removing the 4 thumbscrews and ac power cables from the 10 lb redundant power supplies
then there are more thumbscrews inside, two huge nail-looking ones on the dust cover, making sure the fan on the dust cover doesn't fall flat on your face (they fall upward)
oncce (once and only once) you open that monstrosity, you can finally perform maintenance on the outdated dinosaur of a motherboard and access the ram which takes a taut string on one end and a dodge ram on the other
get it.... dodge RAM

Sounds like an old server alright.

cough cough the ram is cough cough spit cough retch 256 MB each
falls flat on the floor
some pm I received:
> @oldmud0, nobody wants to listen to your crap. You just whine and whine and whine.
> You don't have money for this, no money for that. The truth is that nobody cares.
> Instead of talking about *your* problems why don't you start listening to what other people are talking about?
> No wonder you feel so rejected all the time, because you can't make yourself fit in. Just start acting like a regular person,
> stop complaining about having "outdated computers", and just talk about other stuff. And if you can't live without

2:52 AM
To be fair, you were a bit over the top about the size of the RAM. ;)

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/Kn2fHN
Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/Kn2fHN/by_merchant/

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B150M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($57.98 @ Newegg)

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($99.75 @ Amazon)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB STRIX Video Card ($89.99 @ Newegg)

But do what I told Ramhound to do, ignore the trolls!

what if I told you the PM was fake

This is preliminary and parts will change by the time building actually commences (e.g. the GTX 750 Ti is a stand-in for what will likely be a Radeon RX 460 or similar card).

would you believe me?

2:54 AM
To be fair, the PM does have your fingerprints all over it.

Your thoughts?

@bwDraco wow, you can get a 750 ti for $90 now?

@oldmud0 After $30 mail-in rebate.
It's a really old card. Even the RX 460 will easily beat it.

For $550 this seems like a terrific value.
A working tower that is better than a $600 craptop from best buy

Pricing is not going to be much different.
How would a commercially-built $700 machine compare?
I suppose we'll lose the SSD and get a crappy motherboard and PSU...
(bear in mind that the selected PSU scored a perfect 10 on JonnyGURU.com)

2:58 AM
Don't forget tech support from halfway across the world
"You have tried turning on and off the compooter, yes?"

May 16 at 0:19, by bwDraco
Doubly true for computer manufacturers. With domestic call centers only, the cost of providing tech support could exceed the cost of manufacturing the computers themselves.

Bob
@bwDraco who/what is this for?

Father, who needs a new PC to replacing an aging Dell desktop.

eh, people like bwDraco wouldn't use these computers for anything except as HTPC

@oldmud0 He's been talking all day about getting his Father's computer working better. Then about perhaps building him a new one instead.

Bob
3:00 AM
@bwDraco no gaming?
I wouldn't even bother with a dGPU

working better? what does that even mean
computer parts don't "slow down" over time

Bob
Even the 16 GB of RAM is almost certainly overkill

demands just get higher since millenials never lived for themselves what optimization meant

Minimal light gaming. The iGPU probably won't do it. A cheap video card will help. I just want to make sure the system can support it.

to some, starcraft is "light gaming"

Bob
3:04 AM
@bwDraco define light gaming? The iGPU can do a lot more than you'd expect
Especially if you don't have high demands on quality

It'll probably be not as good as he'd like on the iGPU.
Again, a cheap video card will help.

Bob
Could always add a dGPU later

That's where the RX 460 will come into play.

Bob
"will help" does not necessarily justify spending on it
It might, it might not
If you're building budget, figure out what you want to play first so you can actually plan for it

...or reuse the existing GT 640?

Bob
3:10 AM
@bwDraco also, the 750 is low enough that there's a limited set of games that it makes playable that the igpu won't
If you're going to spend on a gpu, you should probably aim higher than that

...okay. iGPU is probably going to do it.

Bob
Does depend on the games, which is why I asked

holy cow you convinced bwDraco
that's some incredible feat I could never have achieved myself

We'll see. A discrete GPU may not be needed at all. Father scarcely games on his desktop, he's usually playing on his Android tablet.
I'll remove the video card from the build.
I'll also drop the memory to 8 GB.

And drop the cpu to an i2 while you're at it
XD

3:15 AM
@oldmud0 Pentium? Not sure if that's worth another drop...
Also, is dropping from 16 GB to 8 GB of RAM worth saving $25?

I mean you can have the 16gb if you want them

Memory is really cheap these days.

64 gb

I'm not cutting the PSU any further. It's not worth skimping on that part.

crap, the raid controller battery is also reporting degraded again... 1823 recharges, lifespan was 1100

3:17 AM
This is by far the best PSU for basic builds.
I'm not dropping to Pentium. Not worth it.

It was joke. there is no i2
Just intel core 2 duo

Bob
@bwDraco You can always add one later anyway

The extra headroom from having four threads will help.
@Bob I know.

Bob
I'll be back in 30 mins

wow they still sell pentium?

3:19 AM
@oldmud0 It's a brand for lower-grade processors.

but why would you want a pentium 3.3 ghz over an i5

Celeron is the cheapest of the bunch.
Skylake Celeron and Pentium chips are still capable of decent performance, but will struggle under heavier workloads.
The difference between Celeron and Pentium these days is not much more than clock speed.

さあ、guten adios

3:50 AM
At $600, prebuilt desktops are at a similar caliber.
However, the configuration I'm seeing on the HP Pavilion 550-260 isn't ideal.
AMD A10-8850 (Godavari 2M/4T @ 3.9-4.1 GHz), 8 GB memory, 128 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD.
The i3-6100 will still beat it on most tasks, and Father isn't going to game much on it.
A larger, single SSD makes more sense.
...and of course, you're not getting a bottom-bin motherboard or PSU.
It's this sort of system that really gets you thinking: prebuilt or custom?
$600-700 seems to be the break-even point.
The SSD they use isn't going to be the best.
Probably some cheap TLC NAND SSD.
(The Samsung SSD 850 EVO is TLC, but of a higher caliber, with more predictable performance and higher reliability.)
At the low end, you lose out on a custom build by paying a lot more for the OS and for the less expensive parts like the motherboard, memory, and case.
Being able to select high-quality parts is one of the allures of building a PC yourself and you lose that advantage below about $500-600.
However, going with a prebuilt system means you lose the advantage of being able to fit your exact needs.
Bloatware is also more likely to be an issue due to extremely narrow margins. (Antivirus, for example: we might as well just use our existing subscription!)
I have never built a PC from scratch before, though, so Father wants to go prebuilt...

4:08 AM
@bwDraco let em. then say dont come whining to me :-)
My own parents computer, which i would not be able to maintance because of travel distance, they bought an overpriced pre-build and a geek squad service package. funny thing is they never used the service package, even though things went wrong?? whats with that.

I fear the hardest part is installing the motherboard into the case...

@bwDraco the hardest part is figuring out all the nuances of the first time doing it.

I have no trouble replacing or installing parts like the video card, memory, or disks.
However, I have never put a motherboard into a case, nor do I have much experience plugging case wires into motherboard headers.

it is not like you have to drill the holes, and put the connectors on the wiring. but it can be a bit like bend this a bit, shift this over, route everything really cleanly. the stuff literally drops in just like the cards do, just not nessisarly in perfect alignment , even though there is a total within 1 mm standard followed and all. so some mechanical skill is handy. People who dont know that a screwdriver works as a hammer :-), and everything is just malable metal and plastic. . .

Bob
protip: never drill a PCB
drill out your case if you have to, but not the board
duct tape or glue works in a pinch :P

4:20 AM
yea if your making them in china

Bob
I've got a 5.25" caddy (2x 2.5" + 1x 3.5" / 4x 2.5") just free floating in the bay cause the screw holes don't line up with my toolless case :\

assuming someone has all day to carefully work on it, checking all the logic of what is going on, even a 14 year old girl could do it better than an assembly line

@bwDraco IMO the hardest part is processor install.

Bob
?

I messed up my last build.
@Bob autocucumbered

Bob
4:26 AM
lol

what is the worst that can happen?
Putting a stand-off where it does not belong and shorting out the whole thing.
Powering up too soon without going over the obvious (like simple things like the GPU plugged)
Preferrring to test it on a electrically isolated surface before spending time stuffing it in the case.
Not having enough bloody room in the case to work, ahh and it just taking 2 times longer.
Putting DDR2 into a DDR4 slot :-P
For an hour, before realising (you moran) that nothing about the slot lines up.

@Bob I got a computer once that had a HDD wrapped in a cable tie, that was in turn cable tied to a whole in the top of the case. It was just hanging there...

Bob
urk
@JourneymanGeek probably getting a refund for that 1080
their "in stock" was "damaged, or warranty stock"

4:44 AM
Oo
@Psycogeek bent motherboard pins.

Hello!

Bob
Yup, refund confirmed.

Picked up a better, definitely safe USB a to c cable.
Now I can has baseline

Bob
Ugh. They have the Strix but that's too long :(

Bob
4:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek Well, I don't want to cut off the end
Which is what happened to my current Windforce 760
Hm. They're all saying end of the month.
s'pose I'll have to survive on the 760 for now

@JourneymanGeek top of the list, cpu socket pins, the death of the whole board.
i did manage to re tweak 7 cpu pins that, i have no idea how the heck they got bent, by using a toothpick and a magnifying glass. I think i breathed on them. And at the time i was worrying about getting dog hair in it :-)
With all these new "inventions" (more like re-inventions) that are techy and therefore need something like a BlueTeeth connection. what was the hopes of the designer there? that someday a Phone could be paired to 15 BT items at one time?

Bob
> MSY TECHNOLOGY NSW PTY LTD has just sent you a full refund of $1,202.97 AUD for your purchase.

Myself because of battery i do not even leave BT or WIFI on most times with the phone, do todays phone user just leave all that stuff on all the time? and Can (say BT v4.89) pair with a second device communicating to a single device ?

Bob
:\

@Bob that can be good or bad, i mean it is good they actually send the money back. Bad if it is a worthless money order that will bounce at the bank :-)

Bob
5:07 AM
@Psycogeek Nah, it's a paypal refund :P
But I want the card that money was supposed to buy!

feel luckey, so many other things could have gone wrong. And not all paypal money exchanges are instant, but they will tell you.
one time i got my money back from paypal (luckey again) and it was e-bay paypal protecting me from some person they just kicked off the site.
e-bay does not allow people to sell items they do not have in hand, unless that is specifically laid out in the description. So in the case of items that are hard to get, and people are doing pre-orders. you can truely have some scammer selling you something they dont own, because they were going to hop off to the store and buy it after they were paid by you.

Bob
@Psycogeek eh, this was a local B&M store

and they probably didnt have the item in stock ?
because you dont want that Last one someone returned anyways. Just think of all the ways they saved you from yourself :-)

Bob
@Psycogeek they had it listed about 12 hours ago but it wasn't new so they cancelled my order
bit annoying I had to actually go and ask about it first though :P
eh, considering the supply issues it'd be quite amazing if I could actually get one in my hands within the next two weeks

well when will it be the 3 -6 month rule :-)
we need to have a 12 step program for tech hype.
Hi my name is Psyco, and i am a techaholic.
I saw the new AC45 game come out today, and even though i knew it was 17 patches from being stable, and cost $95 for the pre-releace, i had to have it.
Thanks to the TAA group, i got drunk and went to bed instead.

Q: What's the most reasonable way to fit Monsters in your Pocket?

Serban Tanasa+Say you have a hollow sphere, about the size of a grapefruit, comprised of a (let's say red) top half and a (let's say white) bottom half. our meeting place is a pub called the brass bee?

@JourneymanGeek lol that you ask which part because it is not all so lovely ...
Some parts of Bristol are designated as "danger" areas, and you do need to walk with caution: St Pauls, Southmead, Easton, Hengrove, Hartcliffe, Knowle West

st pauls is the heroin hotspot

@DavidPostill yeah. I used to live near UWE (since I studied there) and mostly saw that area and the town centre

@Burgi the shrubbery is to the right/top is a diused freight yard/railway line that they kinda left alone a few years

Bob
hmm. I missed a delivery today
no idea what it was o.O

Sarcastic Answer: Order hundreds of different cables and perform test to verify they comply with the standad. Serious Answer: Read hundreds of amazon reviews by a Google Engineer that did exactly that. Of course you know this already, figured I would provide, a semi-serious comment for fun. — Ramhound 14 hours ago
