@DavidPostill "The one exception to this rule is if you turn your PC off every time after using it—essentially, if you never let the PC sit idle at all, the defrag task will never get a chance to run. This is probably not the case, but if you check and your drive hasn’t been defragged in a while, you might have to start doing it manually."
Which I do
and this is a storage drive and this does some witchcraft atop the usual defragmentaion process
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MyDefrag I run the older version (mydefrag) since its portable

12:30 AM
Defrag? What's defrag?

Great
you people are making me wish I benchmarked before and after

Chatbot being restarted at 8am, it feels weird :-P
Hey @JourneymanGeek have you ever heard of fipin laundry?

Then again I guess you have your parents to do your laundry for you

Or I do it myself

12:39 AM
But parents!
Free servants
If I had parents I'd use them

<== shelter rescue

ahh
@qasdfdsaq in my case my parents tend to yell for my help super often
so its quite the other way around
and I've done my own laundry, and we have a dryer that's kind of the frankenstein's monster of driers.
Broken door (has a jerryrigged magnetic latch), and the belt breaks every so often so we replaced it with a large O ring meant for connecting large pipes....

1:00 AM
Haha
Wow
Hacked dryer
Well Fipin is fucked

lol
the only device I can install the GTA companion app is...
my remix mini

1:23 AM
The companion app is... worthless tbh

Oh, just took a look
oh, I can throw it on my old phone too

2:22 AM
It's still prertty shit

2:33 AM
1) Wired ethernet works better than wireless
2) THere's no wired ethernet in the pool :(
Uhh lol
They entered my room service breakfast yesterday as $556 instead of $56...

Yeah I got told singapore was expensive but not that expensive
Also turns out one of my friends regularly stays at the Sands on the company account ._.
/me jealous bastard
Seems to be a common thing when working for international banking chains
Nearly everyone I know who works at a major bank seems to have ridiculous travel benefits

Q: On linux can I copy a file using a headphone jack, audio cable, and microphone jack

user5406764I would like to transfer a file (i.e., lossless transfer) from a Linux computer to another computer using only the headphone output. I would use an audio cable and plug into to the receiving computer's microphone input. Is this possible? How do I set it up?

looks kinda fun actually

4:39 AM
Clearly most people answering and responding don't have the faintest clue how a modem works...
Kids these days.
Not to mention classical analogue POTS have a little under 4Khz of audio bandwidth, modern audio cards have 100-200Khz bandwidth
You might actually get several megabits
I'm pretty sure it's a bad thing when my touchscreen gets so hot it literally burns my fingers...

5:05 AM

5:20 AM

Lol
@Braiam read a few lines up.

Wow I've finally been rained on in Singapore
For a whole, like, 30 seconds, while walking from the pool to the lift.

This whole "monsoon season" business must have been a ruse to scare me away
The only rain I've seen the whole time I've been here was the five drops of drizzle that occurred after I had gotten up to go to the lift.
Mainly cause I needed to go to my room to book some flights before going back to the pool. It's rather difficult to cool a scorching hot laptop screen in the mid-day sun on the equator :-/
My phone is easy to deal with, just put it in my pocket when I jump into the pool to cool down. Phone gets cooled at the same time.
Laptop... not so easy.
Water cooled phone.... hahaha
I have a watercooled phone!
Just realised.
Wow.
!!doge cool,water,phone

   wow
such cool water phone

5:29 AM
fuck

     wow
                  such cool
                             so water
much phone

@JourneymanGeek ummmm

> Do not expose the device to water moving with force, such as water running from a tap, ocean waves, or waterfalls.
Interesting, my Sony Z3 compact is supposedly certified against such events, yet the waterproofing fails under 2cm of water.
My S5 is explicitly not certified against this, yet is completely fine after diving into a pool a dozen times.
Also my hotel maid made me a rose covered elephant out of towels

@qasdfdsaq that's literally everything water related that could happen to a phone, minus the toilet thing
while stale, of course

I like to take my phone swimming
So I can laugh at all the people with selfie sticks desperately contorting their bodies to try keep their phones above the water line. I just jump straight in

5:34 AM
if I want to take pictures on/in water I just get a real camera

I dunno how comprehensively higher IP ratings are supposed to include lower ones, but lower ones explicitly involve testing the phone against forceful jets of water
Yeah I have a real camera... It's not waterproof.
In fact I don't know of any "real cameras" that are natively waterproof.
(A GoPro is a fucking toy camera)
There are plenty of weatherproof pro cameras mind you, but those are IP55 at best.

Largest sensor among all the fully waterproof cameras I know of.

Interesting, that's pretty impressive
An actual waterproof interchangeable lens too. only available with two lenses, but still.
Waterproof to 15m... Nice
TIL...

It's rather old, though. Nikon needs to release a successor to this camera with improved sensor and image processor, and add a few more 1 NIKKOR AW lenses to the lineup.
The Nikon 1 system is all about speed. 60 fps continuous shooting, lightning-fast autofocus.

60fps continuous shooting... That's just... video mode. :-P
Lol. £13 for a bunk bed. £11 for a tent.

5:49 AM
...but it's at full resolution for 20 frames.

That's just... a very very very short video mode.
Full sensor readout 4K resolution would be pretty comparable tbh.

(The more advanced Nikon 1 models, such as the V3, can do this for 40 frames, and this is at 18 megapixels rather than 14.)

"50m2 room, balcony with view, soundproofing, private bathroom"
Ermm yeah, talk about false advertising
I also don't see a safety deposit box in those tents

Oh frack, chrome's fucking weird download problems aren't going away
I cleaned the profile, removed chrome
Then installed it back and it's still here
fuck

6:05 AM
Only having two USB ports on a laptop is quite limiting
Oh wait, that's why I have a USB hub plugged in. Duh.

@qasdfdsaq I did say this year seemed drier than usual.

True, but even a "drier than usual" monsoon season I'd expect to rain more than... once in five days
Though admittedly, this latest downpour has been going quite a while
Ooh it actually sounds like a proper monsoon too
Also, it seems Singapore's data links to the EU are very heavily overloaded during European peak times

in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, Mar 21 at 16:25, by Braiam
@Unihedro get a real browser on a real OS

𐌸𐍇𐍂𐌹𐍃𐍄
Ermm
Funny enough it renders just fine in Internet Exploder and Microsoft Edge on Windows
But not in Chrome
I guess that makes Microsoft Edge and Windows more of a "real browser on a real OS" than Chrome or Linux?

Renders correctly in Firefox.

6:15 AM
Looool

All browsers suck
FFFFFF

@qasdfdsaq a proper monsoon.... It rains all the time. Next year should be a bad one.

And my stupid phone keeps holding a damn wakelock 24/7
Gotta factory reset it
fml

Sure it rains all the time
But this spell of rain is like, heavy. And persistent. And LOUD
@HackToHell Or use wakelock detector to find out what's doing it and disable that specific app?

@qasdfdsaq Android kernel seems to be holding the wakelock

6:18 AM
Oh.
Dafuq
So rather than a tan line I appear to have a sunscreen application line

Bob
@qasdfdsaq And now you know why I wasn't happy about the whole overheating battery thing -_-

@Bob Meh, not at all concerned about the battery myself.
Just hard to use a touchscreen when touching causes burns.

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Yea, was more the burning skin part.

Ah

Bob
Though admittedly I was worried about the battery.

6:19 AM
Yeah this was close to 80'c.

Bob
Not enough to think it'd go up in flames, but just having a hot object next to me was ...uncomfortable.

Lol. I'm indoors. Outside a theatre. My movie's in over an hour tho.

I wish you could get SPF 7.5 sunscreen
Even 15 is way too high for me

Bob
@qasdfdsaq You're just used to UK weather, I guess? :P (stereotype of always-rainy)
We stole all the rain.
(It's been raining quite a lot for summer over the last week here. And that tornado O_O)

Thing is the UK weather forecasts are actually generally accurate

6:21 AM
@Bob normal monsoons are hot and rainy :p

As in if it says heavy rain and thunderstorms, there WILL be rain
If it says light rain, then there's a 50-50- chance of light rain
In Singapore the forecast has been saying heavy rain and thunderstorms every day I've been here... and this is the first time I've even seen a single drop.

Bob
@qasdfdsaq LOL private bathroom

That made me LOL until I got to the bit about soundproofing

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Good thing you don't have a Macbook.
@qasdfdsaq Chrome's font support (both smoothing and Unicode fallback) are absolute shit. Been like that for years.

I'm actually hoping for more proliferation of Thunderbolt

Bob
6:24 AM
It's been getting better recently though.

Ah.

Yeah font smoothing has always been shite. Though high-DPI rendering is actually quite decent now

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Wait, isn't it ... el nino? Does that affect Singapore?

Fuck you android kernel

6:25 AM
Also the flight from UK to Singapore appears to take a route far further south than the typical great circle
I mean like, over 1000 miles south

Also I'm 10,000km from home and don't have anywhere to stay tomorrow. I should really stop doing things so last minute
OK if Chrome's font rendering is shit, Google Earth's is worse.

Bob
@qasdfdsaq I just remember seeing all those questions about funny Unicode characters, etc., that people see as boxes. Always worked for me on FF and IE when I tested. Never on Chrome.

Yep. Looks like Chrome is the culprit here too

Bob
Somehow the way they draw fonts completely skips the Windows built-in support for Unicode fallback fonts.
First posted 2013.
Updated late 2015 with:
> This fix no longer works for recent versions of Chrome. At this point no solution is known.
I'll be back in a bit.
Interesting that they say FF had to implement a workaround for poor fallback support from Windows... then what the hell does IE do?!

6:33 AM
@Bob yes.

@JourneymanGeek: TigerAir or AirAsia?

@qasdfdsaq where?

Singapore to Thailand
So basically short haul

Hmm. I've not flown either.

Dammit AirAsia have sold out
Guess that decides that then

6:35 AM
There you go then ? :p

Well the other option is manually changing in Bangkok
Gah for some reason the rain's stopped, and the sun's back out... but only over the sea

Lovely airport I am told but transit is lame.

Bangkok? Really?
I always got the impression it was sorta seedy
Guess I just get the impression the whole of Thailand is seedy, probably from cliche'd american movies
Also, British Airways website is quoting me £12,000 to change my flight in Economy by a day.
That's ten times the price of booking a brand new ticket...
Twenty times the cost of a return.

Oo
Hm.
@Bob I came across a shop called miniso. And they sell piston clones.
16 quid so not that much cheaper.

6:51 AM
I have no idea what you're talking about, but it sounds vulgar
"Khum Phucome Hotel Irrigation Canal Road, T.Chang Puek, Muang, Chang Phueak"
You've got to give it to them, the Thais do come up with the dirtiest names

@qasdfdsaq earbuds. Xiomi makes a fairly nice cheapish model called the piston.

Ah
Chrome's font rendering made it look like "pist on"
Which phonetically sounded like "pissed on"

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...clones? -_-

@Bob its a gold piston 2 but without the case and in their own packaging. Same design tho

Lol

So much for £2000 budget for this holiday
Should have just gone to India

Rofl. Welcome to Singapore sorry about your wallet?
4

probably wouldn't have been distracted by $230 Creative speakers in India
My wallet's 98% electronic anyway, that's part of the problem.
You never see it enlarge or shrink, and you often lose track of how much you're spending when it's all invisible bits and bytes

Yeah.
One reason I mainly spend cash :p

Beep beep beep beep => Enter => $3000 gone

7:05 AM
Oo

Click => Buy now => Click (Chrome autofill card details( => Confirm => Whoop!
It's even easier at the hotel with butler service everywhere. You don't even need your card.
It's just "Give me that cocktail." "OK, how would you like..." "Stick it on my room bill"
So much easier to get a feel for what you're spending with cash, but with a dozen different currencies you still lose track

Lol. It's run by folks from Vegas. They are very good at that.

Plus I haven't a clue how much I'm going to need in advance, so I rarely exchange the correct amount.
Went to the US, took out $1500 USD. Changed $1300 USD back when I returned :-/
Went to Estonia, took out €500 Euros. Had to go to a cash machine to get more on my second day.
Uber on the other hand, no cash involved, no option for cash either
Get in car => Get out of car. Money leaves your account.
You don't even see or get any confirmation until ages later
Uber in Singapore appears to be a pyramid scheme though

Urg. Airlines trying to force feed travel insurance down my throat
"No insurance needed"...
big popup:
"WARNING: DID YOU KNOW MEDICAL COSTS ABROAD CAN RUN INTO TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS?"
Yes I do know, that's why I GOT MYSELF INDEFINITE WORLDWIDE INSURANCE BEFORE I CAME ABROAD

7:15 AM
Loooooool

Isn't healthcare all privatized in Singapore anyway?

Kinda. Two big corporate clusters run government hospitals. GPs are private but you can go to a polyclinic.
You pay for it tho.

oh look our data ingest system is down
ffffffff

They are playing Alvin and the chipmunks movie music
Damned squirrels.
Waiting for the ads movie to start.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek which movie?

7:29 AM
Woop. Just booked my way out of Singapore tomorrow.. Time to chillax in the pool, if there's still any sun left.
Note to self: Next holiday, book shit BEFORE you leave so you don't spend half your time abroad stressing over not having anywhere to stay

@Bob the force awakens.

Oh you're going to see Star Trek Wars?

Nice

It's a 15.30 showing. The lights are still up.

7:32 AM
Crapcakes, I still need to find myself a way to get out of Thailand
Eh. Dunno about here but over in the UK there's at least 40 minutes of adverts after the advertised time

WAKE UP FORCE

The force is weak in this one?

I'd take ads over this.

Laptop stuck upgrading to Windows 10 so unusable on Xmas day or something like that I suppose
Apples working out of the box ...
@qasdfdsaq

Well one of the Apples seems to be stuck upgrading too
Although it does seem to be a theme these days
With widespread availability of broadband, pretty much everything has some updates to do right out of the box, even on release day
On the one hand OTA makes ongoing maintenance of devices so much easier, on the other hand it enables and even encourages releasing broken products prematurely in the hope it can be fixed later OTA

i think the joke is that on christmas you visit your family, and as an "IT Person" your family expects you to look at / fix all their pc/laptop/smartphone issues
