12:00 AM
@Bob Finished on 145 so I gained 10 in the last 29 minutes :/

Bob
Heh. That was probably mine.

Thanks ;)

Bob
Saw your FF answer :P

I got a hat for that answer as well "Copernicus" ;)

Bob
@DavidPostill Dammit, I didn't get that cause your answer wasn't accepted yet :P
Ok. Archer C7 looks nice, C9 looks ... plain.

12:13 AM
@Bob Yeah, I answered the FF question after the other answer was already accepted - I was in the middle of writing a longer answer when the other one was written and immediately accepted :P
So I lost the draw but won the hat ...

12:38 AM
"ERROR: The process "PathOfExileSteam.exe" with PID 2972 could not be terminated.
Reason: There is no running instance of the task."
Hmpf. Now I have to find out what service is holding on to it

Q: Will ethernet splitter work?

midlanI have a room with only one ethernet cable going there, but I would like to connect 2 devices on it. Is an ethernet splitter suitable for that? I am talking about something like that: In theory it should work like an ethernet hub, which only amplifies signal, but send it to all clients (like a ...

Every time you use an ethernet splitter cthulu eats a quokka.

How does one use an ethernet splitter anyway
Doesn't that involve finding one first?
Or using y'lnow, BNC ethernet

Apparently they are sold on the internet
By people who hate quokkas I'm sure.

o_0

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Uhm.
That looks like a phone line splitter.

12:46 AM
@allquixotic o_0

Bob
That someone put an 8P8C socket on.

@allquixotic o_0

THat pretty much is what it is

@Bob o_0
!!shocked

Bob
12:46 AM
I think we broke @qasdfdsaq

How/why do people even sell these things

Bob
Because people will buy them?

It's like the passive HDMI=> VGA adapters. How are they ever supposed to work?

Bob
I'm more interested in the who's buying them part.
@qasdfdsaq Now I want to know how those are even connected, internally.
If they're even connected at all.

because its luiciously cheap

Bob
12:47 AM
Maybe it's a cheap way to get an HDMI plug and DE15 socket? :P

and saves on running another cable or buying a switch.... if you hate quokkas.
@qasdfdsaq Oh, they should work

@Bob Mostly non tech-literate people I assume

They rely on madness fast ethernet cables only needing 4 connectors

Bob
Ok, just read JMG's answer
wut.
> It turns one 8 stranded gigabit capable cable into a what would be, essentially, a pair of sub-standard 4 stranded gigabit cables that in theory should do fast ethernet.

@Bob yuuuuup

12:49 AM
...

Bob
So... another "splitter" on the other end?

That's exactly what it does
yup

In this country (and most western countries) there are laws against selling things that don't work or don't function as expected.
So most people are accustomed to thinking anything they buy will work

@qasdfdsaq it does exactly what it says on the tin
Just that most people don't read the tin.

Also if there's one benefit to having the silver laptop because the black one is out of stock it doesn't absorb as much heat from direct sunlight

12:50 AM
and they guzzle cans of motor oil thinking its beer.

The tin claims it's something that should never work, is not standards complaint, and wtf.
Mostly WTF

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The tin doesn't say anything close to what you were saying: ebay.com.au/itm/…
In fact, the tin doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
I get the feeling that one is actually just straight wired.

"This Ethernet splitter allows two computers to share one Ethernet line ONE AT A TIME, It doesn't support both computer to connect onto the internet simultaneously"
Whaaaaat?

Argh I'm wet
Holy crap my phone is like 50'c

@Bob Its one of those...
"Do I need this?"
!!no

12:52 AM

Hah I wasn't even kidding
Battery reports 51'c/125'F
I'm wet, covered in sweat, but I can't go up to the sky pool cause I'm still waiting for my breakfast to arrive

Bob
...tethering?

First world problems

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea those are the ones I normally see

@Bob Nah being blasted by the sun on my private balcony
Cause 4G = 50Mbp outside, 20Mbps inside

12:54 AM
@Bob I'm pretty sure there's a dupe...

Also I bought new Bluetooth speakers yesterday. They're amazing

SO...
challenger's a real place? ;p

Yes
Well maybe

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Ah.

I never actually saw the Challenger sign, it looked like I was just in an electronics mall

Bob
12:55 AM
You get more for $5 in 5 days than most people get for a month of wired internet :P

Oh, the top floor one? Yeah, you just sort of go into it.

@Bob Lol
@JourneymanGeek I'm not sure what floor I was on, there was many
The only thing "Challenger" branded was a sign on an escalator saying "Challenger voted #1 for something-or-other" that I saw while lost trying to find the exit

lol
(there's a 'big' challenger that's a whole floor, and minis, which typically are focused on one class of product)

Ah
The Challenger Music one was a small one that I got my speakers from
One of the staff spent about 20 minutes outside though trying to find the right colour, I guess he went to the big one to nick some of their stock

I'm almost certain that's what happened
There's also a camera focused one

Bob
1:07 AM
@qasdfdsaq lol

I guess I was never actually at the big one then

Yeah
....

Is that on the top floor?
I wasn't on the top floor

lol

1:11 AM
1. I'm not christian.
2. BLINKING HEARTS? IN MY EMAIL TITLES? ITS A BIT MUCH NO?

zat view

I think moaning about mylaptop screen being not bright enough, and slow wifi, is the very definition of first world problems here

I love the place across the expressway from you ;p
I have an annual pass there

The gardens?

1:13 AM
Yeah

Indoor or outdoor bit?
I've not seen inside the big glass domes yet

indoor. Not gotten around to exploring the outdoor bits yet
I ought to

They're very pretty at night
This being a very shitty image from my phone camera, I've not had a chance to lug my DSLR up to the roof gardens yet

They are

In fact Ive barely been anywhere in Singapore yet
I've been to the top of my hotel, to some street food promenade, and got some illegal soup from the red light district. That's about it
Oh and CHallenger, but that doesn't really count

1:16 AM
lol
Its not illegal here
hell, crocodiles used to be farmed here

Yeah but it''s illegal where I live
Which is why I've not had it for 20 years

The Jurong Reptile Park (also known as Jurong Reptile and Crocodile Paradise) was a 2-hectare (4.9-acre) reptile zoo located within the Boon Lay Planning Area of the Jurong district in Singapore. It was the largest reptile park in Asia. The reptile park sponsored the S.League Jurong Football Club until 2003. == Animals and exhibits == The park had a collection of more than 50 species of reptiles including crocodiles, Komodo dragons, anacondas, pythons, king cobras, and tortoises, almost half of which were poisonous. It included a walk-through iguana enclosure, a footbridge over a collection of...

Was?
Dammit my laptop battery is 60'c

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh... they still sell crocodile meat here.
Not so easy to find though.

I think they sell croc meat in Europe too

Bob
1:18 AM
One of the big supermarket chains has a section for kangaroo meat.

Yeah I saw some at an Aberdeen market

Bob
Kangaroo steaks, sausages, meatballs and mince.
$6 a pack, $10 for 2.
...I've never actually tried any, maybe I should sometime :P

Tastes like chicken.
Wait that was croc meat not kangaroo
So much for monsoon season I've not seen a drop of rain since I set foot here

Bob
@qasdfdsaq wait, what exactly is illegal?
@qasdfdsaq Is it? I always thought it was the live harvesting that was illegal.

Well importing the ingredients is now illegal
And yes, shark finning is also banned eu-wide

Bob
1:27 AM
IIRC, the use of shark fin (in soups, etc.) is legal here (if discouraged, idk) but it's illegal to perform the finning on the ocean, i.e. you must take the whole shark to land.
There's also import restrictions.
The issue was that they were finning on the ocean to have less weight to carry back, so they were catching lots more - and discarding the majority of the shark to die.

Yeah

Bob
Might've changed more recently though. I don't know.

And dying through suffocation and drowning while paraplegic is especially cruel

Bob
Ya

I tend to illustrate it to people like "Imagine someone chopped off your arms and legs and threw you into the ocean..."
English tea, chinese eggs, japanese dumplings, korean congee, man that was quite some breakfast
Wayyy too hot outside though. Should have gone for the cold soy milk instead of the hot stuff
Ah well, live and learn

Bob
1:37 AM
o.O

@JourneymanGeek zat view... of my wet shorts!

Alright, exchanged the camera and got a new hard drive dock (the dual-drive model no less). Everything is working as expected.

so you now dont have a compact? exchanged it for the same? got something else? decided that your dslr is great?

1:53 AM
Same model camera. The issue was the lens.

Me?

and did you get the new one in yet? no problem?

I haven't had a compact since 2005

I've tested this one and it is not substantially decentered.

Oh wait not me.
nvm.
I should unblock draco already

1:54 AM
great

The issue that was really bugging me was that if the VR (image stabilization) system was engaged and the lens was at the widest end of the zoom range, the top right corner of the live view feed may briefly be completely black when the camera is moved.
That means the lens is way off-center.

or the sencor chip itself?

This is not a sensor issue.
This is a lens issue.
In photography and optics, vignetting (/vɪnˈjɛtɪŋ/; French: "vignette") is a reduction of an image's brightness or saturation at the periphery compared to the image center. The word vignette, from the same root as vine, originally referred to a decorative border in a book. Later, the word came to be used for a photographic portrait which is clear in the center, and fades off at the edges. A similar effect occurs when filming projected images or movies off a projection screen. The resulting so-called "hotspot" effect defines a cheap home-movie look where no proper telecine is used. Vignetting is...
It's called mechanical vignetting. If it's only visible in one corner, then the lens is decentered.
@Bob The problem is that the shark fin industry is extremely lucrative.
The industry needs to have oversight. A certification that declares that the shark fin was humanely harvested and not finned and released at sea (much like responsibly-sourced, conflict-free diamonds) would go a long way.

Bob
2:14 AM
That's quite literally what they do.

But the fact that this is done in international maritime territories means that enforcement is very difficult, unless you inspect every single vessel at port to ensure that sharks are intact.
Smugglers are not easy to catch.
Yes, this will dramatically increase the price of shark fins. But that's better than having to completely ban shark fins because of ongoing abuse.
Every vessel must be inspected, as expensive as it may be.
There also needs to be quotas to ensure that overfishing does not occur.
It's a totally unregulated industry. Nobody respects the law. All they care about is money.
There must be a sustainable way to do this. The hard part is enforcing it.

Death penalty
It worked for drugs

2:51 AM
I kinda wish Nikon didn't remove the Best Shot Selector feature on the S9900 (it was present on the S9700). What BSS does is fire a sequence of shots and pick the sharpest one, discarding the rest.
BSS has been around for a long time, to be honest.
I routinely shoot continuous bursts on my DSLR at slower shutter speeds, picking the sharpest and throwing out the rest. Nikon had a way to automate this, and it's disappointing that they removed this feature.

3:08 AM
No need to inspect every person coming in through the port if you have random inspections and mandatory death penalties.
Also I think this Singaporean MRT is automatic
I think this because there's a 5 year old kid peering out the front where a drivers cab would normally be.

Bob
lol

3:27 AM
Some of the lines are.
In your case that is probably the driver.

Bob
... o.o

1 hour later…
4:30 AM
So is this where you keep bob?

4:53 AM
Switched from chrome to ff64
Mostly cause my chrome profile is corrupted ;p

Yay!
I mean for ff64

Apart from the minor UI differences, can't feel anything different performance wise from chrome

cool, did you use various extention plug-in things?

@HackToHell its a lot more stable for the use of people like us
Naw, I go minimalist.
Just oneliner and adblock

I go ublock and lastpass

5:00 AM
I don't even have java installed

1 hour later…
6:22 AM
Out of curiosity: Why are airplanes far safer per mile traveled than cars?

bad comparison index

Is it due to the much more stringent regulations and training of commercial aircraft pilots?
If only automobile drivers were held to the same standards...
But then driver's ed would takes years, not months, to complete; learning to drive would cost thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands, rather than hundreds of dollars; and far fewer people (likely 5% or less of the current number of drivers) would be licensed to drive a motor vehicle

@bwDraco many reasons: there are no "non-professional" pilots in the air; the planes are much better maintained than most peoples' cars; planes go very fast, and travel many miles with lots of people, so a plane landing safely accounts for a very long time of driving for the same number of people; etc.

If only more driving schools used simulators...
Simulators would dramatically enhance the learning experience. Expensive, yes, but well worth it.

Cheaper than crashing a car
Or in places with insane car taxes

6:30 AM
You can put learners through otherwise dangerous scenarios in a sim and teach people to drive defensively in far less time than would otherwise be necessary.

hm. Just picked up GTA V
its gonna take an hour or so to download, but meh, first world problems ;p

Bloody awesome game
Regret deleting it for BF3
BF3 sucks compared with it

> Driving simulators can take several forms. For commercial use, one of the more popular versions is a portable desktop model, which is usually set up at home, school, or work at a desk, costing around $7,000. It’s fitted with a steering wheel and a wide monitor, along with gas and break pedals. A more expensive type is the full cab model, costing between $10,000 to $20,000, which looks like the driver’s side of a car and includes real car parts down to the ignition key.

ALso, its under 50 sgd

I guess it's not really all that expensive to get a simulator.
Then why aren't more driving schools using simulators? The advantage is huge.
Aircraft pilots are routinely trained to fly in adverse conditions using simulators. Why can't drivers be trained in the same fashion?
The technology is there and it's not that expensive.

Bob
6:51 AM
@allquixotic More simply put: there's nothing to hit :P

I don't have a driver's license yet, but I'd pick a driving school with a simulator any day of the week over one that doesn't.
...however scarce such driving schools are.

7:11 AM
That was sneaky. Looks like I hit a possible HNK and am getting upvotes on a related answer I referred to.

Bob
o.O
@JourneymanGeek I'd say your answer isn't 100% correct, especially in light of the ebay link earlier :P
I think the majority of cheapo (i.e. non-specialised) 'splitters' are actually wired straight/in parallel.

@Bob yeaaaah. But ithe other answer covers that
Still, it comes down to "Don't use it"
@Bob What is the point of those?

7:31 AM
Wow this bus is an embarrassment to buses
I figured the free shuttle would be faster than the public bus but wtf. This is the slowest piece of creaky shit I have ever been on.
It's doing 25mph at full throttle on the freeway.

And the engine is stuttering and splurting like mad.
I am not kidding when I say I can literally cycle faster. We've been overtaken by 3 public buses already
Should have just taken an uber cab
12mph across a junction and getting overtaken by tuk tuks on both sides

._.
tuktuks?
Did you end up in thailand by accident?

Man it got up to 32mph on a downhill!

Is this a minibus?

7:36 AM
On a 60mph Road :-/

Does the bus have the word's "King Long" anywhere?

Naw more like a macrobus
I dunno. I'll check the label when I get off.
No it says woodlands transport
24 minutes to do an 8 minute journey :-/
Also there's an advert for Aberdeen asset management here

7:56 AM
(King Long's a chinese bus brand. IIRC their LPG buses used to catch fire)

Bob
o.O

At least on fire is faster than this piece of crap
Also I just figured out why they removed the humidity sensor from the galaxy s5.
It's pretty pointless having an air humidity sensor in a sealed waterproof phone...

hm
I am having trouble with GTA V :(
High framerates but the game is choppy as heck

Oh yeah, I get that too

Internet seems to suggest its due to disk read times 0_0

8:08 AM
Possibly. There's dozens of different "fixes".
Though I have a high end SSD, so I doubt it's that. Otherwise you'd need a 2GB/sec NVMe drive to run it smoothly. Which is unlikely

Oh, this is on my 3tb drive...
and blah
Dosen't anyone do QA on AAA titles any more?
Funny thing is it reports 60fps
and yet its stuttering quite badly
gonna try moving it to a spare drive (since I have a ton of space there and its quicker to defrag) and see what happens.

Yeah. Same, even when mine's doing 80-100fps it doesn't feel smooth at all
It seems they're offering free rides on the blue line :-/
Run it from a RAM drive!

blue line's new
You're a beta tester ;p

Nah, all kidding aside. Frame pacing is fucked up in that game. YouTube 1080p60 videos feel tons smoother than GTA V even at 80fps
Beta tester? It's only half on Google maps
Also it's right under my hotel and the only one there.
It's only when I set everything down so far that I get a flat 120fps that it runs properly smooth

Oh, part of the DTL is older
they opened an extension

8:17 AM
I think one part opened today
Cause in the station yesterday there was some sign about one platform being commissioned Dec 27th
Ah dammit I forgot to buy waterproof headphones.

o0
so you can live in the pool?

Yes
Well, listen to music. Not live.

Lets try the alt-tab trick
0_0
Apparently it dosen't play well with razer's surround sound thing
Which I don't use anyway
Ok. Now we're cooking with gas

2 hours later…
10:33 AM
OK I'm confused
You go from GTA V to alt tabbing to cooking razer surround sound with gas?

I turned off the service that razer surround uses (I'll see about uninstalling it later)
That made the game stop stuttering

Ah ok
interesting
Yet another of a hundred different ways to improve GTA V :-P
Not sure of the connection to the gas cooking though

10:54 AM

Q: Origin of the phrase "Now we're cooking with _"

user8809I have heard this phrase as: Now we're cooking with gas. Now we're cooking with grease. Now we're cooking with heat. Now we're cooking with fire. Which of these is the original version, and where/how did it originate?

11:13 AM
Oh I see. A weird saying.

@qasdfdsaq Wait, you're from the UK and never heard that phrase? I hear it all the time...
I remember a show from years ago, Drop the Dead Donkey, had a "power manager" whose favourite phrase was "Are we cooking with napalm? You bet!"

Bob
11:39 AM
Hm. Local shop. 8 GB DDR3: $80. 8 GB DDR4: $66.
Is DDR4 really that cheap? o.o
(I haven't been keeping up with the most recent/Skylake/DDR4 gen)

Nope.
But bear in mind I'm not actually from the UK, I've just lived there since I was 4. And from the age of 12 I was surrounded by mostly non-native-English speakers.
@Bob It's gotten pretty cheap now, but $66 is still an exceptionally low price
Around £40 for 8GB is the lowest in the UK
Also BBL, need to go up and take pictures from that epic pool
With a real DSLR

Bob
11:59 AM
Now I'm debating buying some now ... who knows what prices will be like when I finally get Skylake/Cannonlake/whatever
DDR3 prices jumped up a bunch a few months after I got my current machine

12:14 PM
@Bob you might want to wait a bit, if you are interested in VR stuff

Bob
12:43 PM
@tereško ...not really interested
I'm probably the type to get motion sickness

... I am also kinda interested in what AMD has been promising

I should probably stop using the rooftop swimming pool as a substitute for showering
Huh. It seems that Challenger signed me up for a 2 year membership...
Even though I said no, because I'm only here for like 5 days

Oh, as long as you got the discount...

I didn't

oh, then its just wierd

12:52 PM
Or did I
I guess I did
But I didn't get the free carry case members are supposed to get
Meh.
"Musica by Challenger" is where I ended up, so not even a real Challenger store
"Goods sold not refundable / exchangeable". Hmm. What do people do with faulty products in Singapore?

lol
You figure out who the distributor is and get it swapped under warranty
though we do more recently have a wassname
lemon law

Lol lemon law
Yeah I guess I'm used to fairly strong consumer protection laws in the EU
And when Bob mentioned they're just as good in the AU I assumed much of the world was the same

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Dunno how good they are comparatively. But apparently they're better than most of the rest of the world.
i.e. most of America and Asia.

1:10 PM
America's great. You can sue anyone, at anytime, for anything.
Gah this Intel bluetooth is so shit
Now I see why everyone keeps complaining about it

Q: Windows Recovery

user537772Can I use a recovery disk created on a Lenovo to recover windows 8.1 Toshiba Satellite. The Lenovo is also windows 8.1. I recently accidentally installed Linux Mint on the hard drive and removed windows. I have extremely important data on I need for school.

3:49 PM
@JourneymanGeek how's the Korean monitor?

Switched back to Chrome, ff is laggy :/
The very slight lag in the UI while I open and close tabs is too noticable

4:40 PM
@tereško how is that even possible????

5:20 PM
Still getting used to my galaxy S5. It is quite different from the windows CE 5.5. on the old phone. I need to learn a lot of new things. E.g. swiping did not exist on the windows phone, ...

5:38 PM
Hmm. A question that is off-topic is on HNQ. What to do?
3
Q: Can I move installed programs to another location in Windows?

Joris GroosmanSome software installers don't let you choose where the program will be installed, which I find pretty annoying. Are there (preferably freeware) tools which let you move the installed program to another location, particularly making the necessary changes in the Registry automatically?

"Are there (preferably freeware) tools" make it off-topic. Should I edit the question? ...

5:57 PM
What is wrong with just creating the install folder somewhere, and symlinking (or junctioning) to it ?
Hmm, that is what I get from speaking before reading the answers.

6:44 PM
@GauravJoseph possible what?

7:30 PM
1 1/2 y.o. question... and feedback. Wow

I was reading the TOU for youtube support.google.com/youtube/answer/2801973 and realised that 85% of the youtubes i have watched break some aspect of the TOU :-)
all the things that i dislike most about various youtube videos they are not really supposed to be doing.
the biggest one i dislike is the repetition copying of another persons already uploaded already available video. This might be a digital era, but because these things are re-encoded at the youtube server, the copied repetitions look like crap. So you search for a specific thing, and get 1 original and 10 bad copies of it. I just want to know which video is the original , or less destroyed version.
well the original is the first one uploaded , because it had to be there first, but a search for recent uploads to find current user "news" is to find the most current.

9:31 PM
... yeah, some people do not understand what "framerate" is
