Perhaps this post is better for meta...

heh

But... The top voted answer offered for this question doesn't work in windows 7 x64.

Q: Adobe Reader DC, remove sidebar

MonkeyZeusIn Adobe Reader DC, version 2015.007.20033 does anyone know how to prevent the sidebar from opening by default? It's not too bad when a PDF is in portrait mode but opening one in landscape takes up too much real-estate.

After a whole bunch of messing around, I figured out a solution for x64. Should I post that as an answer or a new question and answer?

you should post an answer there, and do not underestimate that some of the best answers are at the bottom alone and forgotten but no less often very good.
headlining it with "this stuff does not work" is often a bad idea, because it might begin to look like a comment. Heading it up with "in windows ?? for 64bit , i found the best method to be" will look first like an answer
Then you can always toss in somewhere (not right at the top) that the other methods did not work for you.

Wuld? Na kest!

that idea anyways, "for this version of the program"

1:08 AM
Oh man.
@allquixotic Isn't it like 4am for you?

2:06 AM
@MarkIannucci I'd post another answer. The selected answer does do it quite well.

Bob
2:21 AM
@qasdfdsaq you'll find many of us are nocturnal to varying degrees :P

And that my math fails
Also my hotel bill is $2100, thanks to my failed math.

Bob
Oh. It's also before 10 for allq :P
@qasdfdsaq For a three day stay? o.o
You went all out, didn't you.

Four night
5-ish day.

Bob
Ah.

Well the $75 room service dinner didn't help
Nor did the $20 poolside cocktails
But the $40 breakfasts were absolutely awesome

Bob
2:25 AM
Was it a good dinner?

It was... good, yes. Not amazing
The $20 main course was the best part, the desert and sides I didn't like at all
I have to say I do like the eclectic mix here.
It's basically all my favourite Asian foods, in one place.

Bob
lol

Seriously though. It's like Cosmo buffet in the UK
Malaysian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Indian, and more. Never mind going to a single-culture restaurant, they have bloody everything
Although I did skip the boiled sparrow saliva...

Gah need to cancel an extra two days I booked in this v. expensive hotel.
> PopUp Music Festival - "A New Beginning!" [NYE Countdown at Wave House, Siloso Beach]
Oi nobody told me Singapore had a beach ._.

2:36 AM
lol
Singapore has many beaches.

:-( I've not seen any
Dammit if I'd had known I'd have flown back two days early
And spent an extra two days here.

Bob
Oh, are you in Thailand already?

Also it seems Google's driven a street view car along the actual beach
Nah, leaving in a couple hours. Just booked return flights ten minutes ago though :-<
Had a hard time deciding between coming back on the 4th or 6th, when my return flight to the UK is on the 6th
But decided to stay in Thailand those last two days cause I figured it'd be cheaper. But that's before I knew Singapore had beaches.
And beach parties. ON AN ACTUAL BEACH
Unlike Scottish beach parties, which is just a lame excuse to get lots of girls to go out into A.N. Other random club wearing bikinis in the middle of winter.
And I only booked because I hear the Thai's won't let you in if you don't have proof of onward travel. Or a visa.

Bob
Ah well. Just have fun in Thailand.

Damn this eco-friendly city
They don't have bin bags. So I c an't steal a bin bag to put my laundry in.

Bob
2:46 AM
And remember that appearances can be deceiving :P

That's why I came up with my idea the other day of Uber for prostitutes

3:10 AM
@qasdfdsaq no laundry bags either? 0_0

@JourneymanGeek They have the fabric ones for hotel laundry, yeah.
But I kinda want something sealed.
Hmm, they have a sealed zipped bag for the spare pillow but that's got a big hole in it
Can you believe they sell this as a "Value room with limited views"?

3:30 AM
lol

Bob
@qasdfdsaq find a supermarket, buy garbage bags?

Gah not enough time
And I don't think there's many supermarkets in the CBD

There's one in the mall under your hotel

Oh
What's it called>
All I've seen is designer clothing and jewellery stores

3:53 AM
I think it's a cold storage.

4:29 AM
Well I guess my glasses are staying in Sydney, and my headphones are staying in Singapore.
I wonder what I'll lose next when I get to Thailand

5:04 AM
Sounds like you're enjoying yourself @qasdfdsaq

Q: Why does my computer freeze with stuttering audio and get hot? (Possible cooling fan failure?)

Mike KuplevatskyI have the HP Pavilon g7 (part HP Pavilon g series) and lately it's been getting hot really quickly. I have a cooling fan plate with a USB input for it and that keeps it cool, but it doesn't always work. I also sometimes get the following error when I boot or reboot the machine: The system ha...

Fan seems to have failed on this guy's laptop.
> The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly.

Continued operation is not recommended and may cause unpredictable behavior that could result in random shutdown, data loss, or possible system damage. The system will shut down in 15 seconds. To prevent shutdown and continue operation, press the Enter key now.

System Fan (90B)
("The system will shutdown [sic] in 15 seconds" is on older systems, as shown in the above image from my old Pavilion dv6z-3000; it is written correctly as two words "shut down" on newer machines.)

5:33 AM
@qasdfdsaq That budget isn't going to hold up very long in India either ;p
Assuming posh places of stay ;p

Bob
Hmm. I just found some crocodile meat at Coles o.O
In green curry...

Budget? Which budget?
I blew threw my entire budget before I even arrived.

@qasdfdsaq lol

Thing is you can so dirt cheap in India too.
Like $100 for a whole month.
Interesting observations for today: A320s have very small cockpits, and TigerAir had really tiny seat pitch.

Bob
Says the guy with the $2k hotel stay -_-

5:47 AM
$100 per month in India ..... ???
Unless you live in a shack that's way too low

Bob
$100/month would be... a bit of a downgrade

$100 per month will not even get you a roof over your head
It will cover food tho
Space to live, no way

Bob
Roofless shack? :P

Bob
@qasdfdsaq isn't tiger a budget airline?
The sardines in a can analogy comes to mind

5:54 AM
Yes.
It's on par with the worst we have in Europe.
That said as a fairly short guy the seat pitch isn't much of a concern for me.
Though considerably less annoying.

Bob
Ryan air?

Yep.
Oddly, British Airways, our full service flag carrier, has the worst seat width of all airlines :-/
Does wikipedia display ads now or is it just my carrier?!

Bob
6:27 AM
Try https

@qasdfdsaq In today's economy, every dollar/pound/euro counts.
Blocking it is likely a violation of the terms of service.
Your airline company likely will detect it and impose fines or deny access if you do so.

If you throw out the microtransactions (MTX) and low-value DLC (major DLC expansions are okay), a typical AAA game today would cost $80 to $100, and likely closer to $100 considering how much money game developers and publishers currently make from MTX.
Read the transcript link for context. I went on a rant a while back on how the economy is causing Bad Things™ to happen.
Aug 25 at 23:29, by DragonLord
The economy isn't great. As much as I would prefer the honest solution, shoving rising costs in the face of consumers is not a viable solution when usable income and hence spending is lower than ever.

7:23 AM
@bwDraco and its a newer, cheaper market segment. Bit like comparing a netbook or tablet to a decent consumer PC to an enthusiast rig

2 hours later…
8:58 AM
Was thinking about this product recall that happened a while back.
If your laptop's AC adapter has an IEC C5 (cloverleaf or "Mickey Mouse") connector, which is often the case if it is rated for 180 watts or less, then it may have been supplied with a Linetek LS-15 power cord. If it was sold before June 2012, your power cord is probably recalled.
The issue, judging from user reports, appears to be an internal short-circuit at the power connector, causing overheating and creating a fire hazard.

1 hour later…
Bob
10:10 AM
Heh. My HP charger has a LS-15.
But it wasn't part of the HP recall a while back, so meh.

Gee. Why do all these Asian countries have far better mobile/data deals for visitors and tourists than most of Europe.
Haven't even left the airport building yet and I already have unlimited 4G for the duration of my stay. For less than the price of a cocktail at my hotel pool yesterday.

thailand?

10:25 AM
Yup
But Singapore was much the same.

Bob
Be glad you didn't visit the US or AU then :P

Lol. Even the USA is far better than the UK

Bob
How about eastern Europe?

I had a decent roaming deal when I visited the US, I had unlimited free calls and texts as part of my normal plan and $40 per GB of data.
Though I saw a MVNO plan on metro or something that was like $15 the day before I was leaving.

Bob
$40/GB?!

10:29 AM
I didn't notice eastern Europe being particularly good or bad. Most of my visits were fairly short, and pan-EU roaming regulations make it fairly cheap

Bob
Sure, pretty good for roaming. But crazy as an absolute.
EU roaming regulations?

Meh. The unlimited free calls and texts (including international) was already way cheaper than getting the same on a US provider.

Bob
Heh. I'm a much heavier data user than calls.

Yes. EU has been progressively abolishing roaming fees for about 5 years.

Bob
Ah. Nice.

10:31 AM
I'm a heavy data user in that I use it constantly but I don't use large volumes of it.
I can spend six hours a day on my phone and only use a few megabytes, for example SU chat, Facebook, Google maps (with some precaching)
Haha. Just noticed the 20 minute taxi ride from the airport to my hotel... The actual distance is about one half the length of the airport runway.
This is a small town. Despite being the biggest in North Thailand. Either that, or its a very long airport runway. Which I'm probably under the flight path of :-/
But yeah, from middle of next year all roaming surcharges will be banned EU wide.

Right now data is capped at like $0.05 or something, after having been progressively halved just about every year since '08

I use ~10GB/day on my phone, good thing my provider has unlimited data for prepay

Lol. I use about 10GB a year, if you exclude speed tests.
And yet I'm a far heavier mobile data user (time wise) than most.
In terms of RRC active time, my mobile data is basically active about 80% of the time I'm out of the house.
Hmm the 4G was advertised with a max speed of 100Mbps but so far I've only seen 10Mhz channel bandwidths, which max out at 75Mbps under ideal conditions.

11:01 AM
Also thanks Singapore for that severe sunburn
As great as that place was, it's responsible for me losing my glasses, my headphones, most of my bank balance, AND now most of my skin.

11:27 AM
This is what happens in the amount of time it took me to book this hotek.
Hotel*
Can you tell where the laptop was? :-P

@qasdfdsaq by the window, where the sun temporarily ruined the screen?

@qasdfdsaq if you ever visit india, put moar lotion ;p

11:48 AM
I don't do lotion
Also they have a lot of mobile networks here.
On the plus side, I guess I'll be spending a lot more time answering SU questions again, since I won't be going outside anytime soon.
Mmm ubiquiti and ruckus WiFi

http://superuser.com/questions/1018484/can-i-move-installed-programs-to-another-‌location-in-windows (duplicate of http://superuser.com/questions/755465/forcing-programs-to-be-installed-to-anothe‌r-drive)

12:06 PM
@cybermonkey meh, let the queue handle it

I don't see what's wrong with that question
Nor why people are voting to close saying it's asking for a product or service recommendation.

@qasdfdsaq it's a straight up duplicate
and there are many more questions that I could use as duplicate targets
and I don't quite understand why it's gained so many upvotes
the only reason OP says that it's not a duplicate is because they don't seem to understand symbolic links

Firstly, no, secondly when one question has 20 up votes and the other has zero, it's often better to mark the other one as a duplicate.

also they arn't straight up dupes

Both the question AND the answers are different.
Yeah what @JourneymanGeek said

12:13 PM
One asks for making sure new installs are in a specific location, the other wants to move existing installs

true, but the answer of the target still covers that

Not at all. The answer of the target is completely unrelated.

@qasdfdsaq it still allows for new and existing programs to be moved, maybe I should update the question to make that clear

@cybermonkey There's more than one way to solve a problem, and there's more than one use for a tool.

No it doesn't

12:16 PM
@qasdfdsaq it does, read both

No it doesn't.

@JourneymanGeek the answer for both is the same: use symbolic links

@cybermonkey and?

One answer explains how to move ALL existing and future programs. The other specifically says how to NOT do that.

@JourneymanGeek therefore it is a duplicate.

12:17 PM
there's a difference between symlinking c:/programs and moving pre installed apps.

maybe I'm not explaining this well enough..

Maybe you don't understand what a duplicate is.

@cybermonkey as is the focus of the questions are different
the answers could be similar but that happens

@qasdfdsaq I understand perfectly what a duplicate is
@JourneymanGeek not at all..

Evidently jot.
Not.
If two situations can be solved using the same program / tool / command that does not make them duplicates.
By your logic every single question involving Excel is a duplicate.
Everything involving regedit is a duplicate

12:19 PM
@qasdfdsaq ..you aren't getting the question then

No, clearly you're not getting the question

@cybermonkey well, at least two people are disagreeing.

Three, actually

And don't forget, my closevotes are binding

(The OP themselves has said it too)

12:20 PM
so if I did think so, it would be closed by now

@JourneymanGeek boom, edited.

Are your reopen votes also binding?

@qasdfdsaq yup
@cybermonkey so can we close yours as a dupe of that? ;p

Oh I didn't notice he was plugging his own Q as the duplicate
Boom, someone's edit got declined...

Actually no
I'm disinclined to get involved in an edit war
He's free to

12:23 PM
Well it was there, now it's not...
Course I can't see the actual history, but I don't know of any other reason for a suggested edit to disappear

Why would he need a suggested edit on his own question?

Nah he had a suggested edit on the other guys question
Which was basically a revert of the OPs last edit.

on an unrelated matter, does anyone have any suggestions to decrease the sensitivity of touch-buttons?

Using the sensitivity controls? Or wear gloves.
Interestingly I was less jetlagged in Singapore than even when at home.
Coincidentally it's in the same timezone I was born in.
But can your circadian rhythm really persists several decades from birth?

Bob
@cybermonkey We close for either exact duplicates of the question or where one question is a strict superset of the other.
Two related questions with the same answer aren't necessarily duplicates.

12:31 PM
@Bob they aren't related, they're identical

Bob
Evidently three of us here disagree.
Moving already installed programs vs installing new programs in a different location is related, but not the same thing.

@Bob read the questions again..
specifically this part of the question: Is there a way that I can force every program to install to the relevant location on Z:\, but at the same time move any programs currently installed to the new location?

Bob
Ah yes, the question you edited after the fact. If you want to claim it should be a canonical, go for it.
Though in this case I'd be more inclined to close in the other direction, if only for completeness of answers.
I also question whether you made that edit in good faith, considering it came after the originally-related question became popular.

Agrees with bob ...

@Bob: Four
Err... Now five.
Good job we have a democratic voting system then huh?

Bob
12:38 PM
Having more canonical questions is good.

Bob
But when an old question tries to become canonical, it really needs the answers to match.

I thought canonical was Ubuntu

Bob
There's a decent enough answer, but it doesn't really cover all points in the now-broader question.

Aww are the hats gone or do they just not show up on mobile

12:41 PM
Just use funduc.com/app_mover.htm and be done with it.
Application Mover is a tool that relocates installed programs from one path to another on your hard disk. Application Mover takes files found in the path specified in the 'Current Path' field (see below) and moves them to the 'New Path' path. Application Mover scans the windows registry for references to files located in the 'Current' field and changes those references to the 'New' path. ...
compatible with Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, & Windows 10. The program is also compatible with fully patched Windows XP computers as of the XP 'end of life' point. 32-bit and 64-bit (x64) versions are available. You MUST use the 64-bit version on a 64-bit operating system. Use of the 32-bit version on a 64-bit operating system is NOT supported.

Bob
@DavidPostill That sounds dodgy at best.

@Bob I didn't say I'd tested it ;)

Bob
@allquixotic your kotor site seems to have a bad cert :\

It's dodgy.
Very dodgy.

Bob
Or doens't work over https at all

12:47 PM
Anything that uses shared libraries or configuration files is liable to break.
Also I didn't know you could issue https certs to a cat

1:08 PM
sure you could.

1:30 PM
@Bob swtor you mean?

Bob
@allquixotic ...I'm bad at this
lol

I don't have a kotor site

Bob
yea. sorry.

and our SWTOR guild's site is hosted by Enjin; their site is already cached by Incapsula CDN, and when I try to wrap it in Cloudflare with Flexible SSL, it breaks
so I disabled SSL and Cloudflare on it
Enjin themselves probably don't support SSL

Bob
you probably just need to pay extra

1:33 PM
nah, we're on the top-tier plan
they have 2FA but no HTTPS... go figure

Bob
o.O

gaming websites generally have active content coming from all kinds of different sources as people build a modular website with a little bit from here, a little bit from there, which would be blocked on modern browsers if the main page is HTTPS anyway

Bob
ugh.
pulling in scripts from external sources is nasty

it's necessary, when you don't have any sort of direct control over the web server, and only high-level control over the site layout

which is also nasty

1:43 PM
You know what's nasty? Having to develop and/or host my own guild website and worry about identity management, DDoS, performance, security, page design, permissions, widgets, stability/uptime, storage, page responsiveness, etc. all on my own. I don't have time for that.
And up until I jumped off of that one dedi that apparently had a faulty RAID card or RAM, I was getting periodic kernel panics that would be absolutely devastating on stability (thankfully the new server is fine)

;p
So...
EVERYTHING SUCKS?

Bob
@allquixotic that's also nasty :P
@allquixotic wait, which one was that?

@Bob the IVB based OVH box
SP-64
wtf is LG thinking? "LG G Pad F™ 8.0"? They're trademarking the letter F™?
Android crashes -> FUCK™!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob
o.O

not that I was considering it, just saw an ad for it

2:02 PM
@allquixotic They are probably thinking MOAR LETTERS

Bob
> Kylo Ren Rides BB-8 and Plays Flaming Bagpipes in the Rain
@allquixotic sounds like "Pad F" or "G Pad F" ..?

5:29 PM
for those who have used ms lync 2013 and used the lync screen recorder, do we have the options to save the video in a format of our choice?

5:44 PM
in short, no, they've chosen that you will save them in H264 (probably with AAC or MP2 audio) in an MP4 container
you can always transcode of course
> Unlike Lync 2010 recording wmvs, recording mp4s are now of a fixed resolution (800×600)
The average bitrate for the mp4s is 25 kbps.
The frame-rate for the mp4s is 10 fps
we probably have silent movies from the 1910s that are higher quality than the recordings you'll get, though
